In 1995, India was brought to a standstill when a Ganesha idol in New Delhi started drinking milk. Within a few hours, it was reported that Ganesha idols not only up and down the country, but even in foreign countries like the US and UK had started drinking milk. What was causing this strange phenomenon? Experts tried to show that there was a simple scientific explanation behind the miracle, and yet people thronged to temples, skyrocketing the price of milk on that day. The crowds included educated people in urban areas, so how was it that these people believed in the miracle too? Was it orchestrated, or did people actually believe in the miracle of gods drinking milk? Our investigation has shown that it was both, as we'll tell you in this video.

Mohak, about the South Indians having "less" temples which worship Lord Ganesha might be wrong, I am from South India and almost every temple has a Lord Ganesha sculpture and its very well worshipped.
Which state?...
Here in Kerala, most of the temples are dedicated either to Lord Krishna, or to Lord Shiva or to local deities...
In TN there's a Vinayagar temple in almost every 1-2 streets

I live in Telangana and here and in Andhra every single temple has a Ganesha idol which we pray to first and the we pray to the other idols that may be present there

ganesha is also worshiped in shiva temples and karthikeya/subrahmanya/muruga temples as the second deity.
most temples in kerala has a vinayaka shrine too.
Two years ago my parents told this story, so I was very surprised to hear it, then I tried to understand the science and my father also explained it to me.

I have a PhD in Physics from TIFR, and have received an all India rank of 38 in Gate. I have actually enquired a lot of people about this phenomenon. Here is what I found:
1)The truth remains that this drinking thing stopped the very next day. There is absolutely no scienctific explanation behind a phenomenon happening once and stopping abruptly.
2) I am from Maharashtra and almost 99% of Ganesh idols here don't actually have a hole in it. For capillary action to take place, there is a requirement of a proper pipe like hole in the idols.
3) The modern young generation finds it cool to be called as atheist, so that they have a false sense of intellectual superiority over the "backward superstitious religious people". The same people are actually super dumb, and don't have a meaning to their lives. In search of a meaning, they make this rebellious nature as their only motive to live.
In ancient India we used science to do miracles, but in present India we use science to prove miracles...

I remember when a neighborhood aunty asked my mom if our Ganesh ji is drinking milk or not. My mom, before answering, then asked her about it. That aunty said, yes.
My mom said, no, our Ganesh ji isn't drinking any milk, and then that aunty said that even her Ganesh ji isn't drinking milk and she lied about it.

I didn't knew about this phenomenon. But when you suddenly told that the sculpture was drinking milk, the first thing came to my mind is that this is due to some surface property or simply surface tension and Jurine's law. The thing that why this rumour was so much well spread when there were several college Physics majors, professor and even students like me in India (I am currently in 11th) then why a scientist was needed to explain it. This only proves that , everyone can study Physics but only a very few can apply it.....

Also water being curved in the glass is due to the phenomenon where adhesive force is more than the cohesive force. Not mainly capillary. But this is opposite in silverware, where water doesn’t stick to the surface. That is the reason why old people used to advise giving food to kids on silverware to avoid contamination. I have a PhD in Physics from TIFR, and have received an all India rank of 38 in Gate. I have actually enquired a lot of people about this phenomenon. Here is what I found:
1)The truth remains that this drinking thing stopped the very next day. There is absolutely no scienctific explanation behind a phenomenon happening once and stopping abruptly.
2) I am from Maharashtra and almost 99% of Ganesh idols here don't actually have a hole in it. For capillary action to take place, there is a requirement of a proper pipe like hole in the idols.
3) The modern young generation finds it cool to be called as atheist, so that they have a false sense of intellectual superiority over the "backward superstitious religious people". The same people are actually super dumb, and don't have a meaning to their lives. In search of a meaning, they make this rebellious nature as their only motive to live.

I am from Punjab and I remember that incident. It was crazy. People were madly running to temples to feed milk to idols. So long lines outside temples. My mom wanted to go too and my father said don't be mad. It is just some kind of scam.

Just one query..... Capillary action usually lifts the fluid till certain length (even against gravity as is the case in Ganesha statue drinking milk) however in order to create continuous flow we would need syphoning. Syphoning needs to be initiated by an external source.
So if it is suggested that the Ganesha statue was drinking milk due to capillary action, you need to elaborate further.....

I was a really young kid in school when this idol drinking milk incident happened. Everyone was going gaga over this and I was trying to tell everyone that materials absorb liquid through tiny capillaries - just like a newly constructed brick & cement absorbs water. I had observed this also while making a Diwali ghar with my little sister. I never went to temple for this. I think people choose to be dumb.

My home statue only accepted milk for that day only. It didn't accept further and my family members didn't visit temple. I guess capillary action is too opportunistic here. Just FYI,it was old statue and not the new one.

Awesome video Mohak. I had actually experienced this incident as a kid, while returning from school on that very day. People had queued up outside temples with milk in containers and spoons.
The very next day, our Physics professor debunked the whole thing in just 15 minutes and told us that it was due to capillary action which he had taught a couple of months ago.
And, then all of us students were absolutely cool about it and actually made jokes about the whole incident as to how stupid people can be, to believe in miracles.
