  • Thanks again to Vangoa! I truly never imagined I'd get a free banjo this early in my banjo-ing career, but here we are! So cool! The link and the discount code will be right below this if anyone happens to be interested in purchasing this banjo.
    Also, sorry about the sub-par audio and video quality; my old phone fell into a toilet, and this new one is just not as good. I'm working on getting better equipment, so bear with me till then!

    Your hat collection never ceases to amaze 😅 great video, the review seems very balanced from a non player perspective, I think you could easily teach people if that interests you! Your rendition of Salt Spring is one of my favourite videos 😊 your dad's face is still cracking me up 😂 thanks for sharing!

    I got one of these on Amazon for about $160. I took off the resonator, put a rag behind the rod and bridge and got it sounding pretty nice. Mine had a buzz too , I had to tighten the head tension... I think I did about 3 or 4 passes, tightening each hook by 1/4 turn and once the head was tighter the buzz went away :D Thank you for helping me discover clawhammer, I just started learning banjo and it's awesome. Cheers!

    That was the most honest and flat our review of any instrument I've seen on TH-cam. Very helpful. I play Ukes, guitars, didgeridoos, harmonicas and jews harps myself. I've tickled around on a few banjos but never bought one. From your review I would absolutely buy a Vangoa as my first banjo. Thank you!!!

    I’ve played a few Vangoa instruments, mostly review samples. Their quality control is all over the place- some arrive playable, some are train wrecks, although they’ve gotten better. I’ve had guitars with frozen truss rods, warped necks, etc. The problem for the beginner is that they don’t know when an instrument is defective unless they have an experienced friend or teacher to check it out for them. In addition, a beginner doesn’t really how to set it up. Heads much be tensioned properly, necks aligned, and as Phoebe points out, bridges set.

    • @raul_jocson_
      @raul_jocson_ 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, this is accurate. I have a few cheap-internet-wonder instruments. Imo, what you get for the price is quite great if - IF - you know how to tinker them into shape. Misaligned fret boards and nuts, sharp/uneven frets, etc. Like all the parts and materials are there, but they're slapped together quickly without much finishing, so you've got to do it.

    Great! Congratulations. Personally I love the sound of your regular banjo that you use for your videos. The new one has a nice ring with the resonator on, but for clawhammer I prefer the woodier sound from your banjo that you've used for your previous videos. You're an awesome banjoist, and I love the sound I hear from your videos.

    I own a vangoa ukulele and violin, and this banjo seems to uphold the same qualities and setbacks. Great price and enough build quality to figure out if you even like the instrument, and gets you started until you figure out and save up for the actual banjo you want to have for the early-mid part of your learning journey. Then once you get your next banjo, the vangoa fits perfectly as a beater or experimental instrument. My vangoa ukulele is not my favorite ukulele at this point, but I still manage to find myself playing on it all the time when around people at parties and get togethers.... My good ukulele is too good for the hazards of environments where I'd find myself playing for people lol
    I got a Pyle banjo to get into banjo, and it is the same as a vangoa basically. Lowest quality necessary to achieve instrument status, so that costs can stay down. I built my good banjo, so I'm not afraid to take it places, I can always build it again or fix it! Half the spectacle of my playing is that I'm playing on a home made banjo

    Good review, but I already have a Deering Goodtime and just wanted to hear you play. Excellent right hand! I learned some basic Scruggs style pickin' a few years ago, but these days I would really like to switch to clawhammer, partly because I prefer to play without picks and I love that old timey sound. Phoebe, can you recommend an online video(s) that would get me started with clawhammer at home? In my town, there is nobody who could give me lessons. I'd also welcome any other players who might chime in on this request.

    I've got a beater banjo that I mainly keep in open D (f#DF#AD), and my "main" banjo that is usually in double-C, but can easily go to the next most common tunings (sawmill, open-G). Still a little bit of a pain to get to even less common tunings 🙂

    Interesting, I didn't know that the resonator is used mostly with Scruggs playing and without for clawhammer. I notice that some known banjoist such as Stringbean Akeman play clawhammer on a resonator, so apparently not a firm rule. I got a resonator banjo from a relative but haven't played much yet (learning the guitar is taking up all my practice time). Have you considered teaching systematic banjo lessons? You'd be a fun teacher to learn from with your bright and quirky personality.
