Let's Make A Sapphic Mummy Movie

  • The Mummy (1999) remains one of the most fondly remembered Universal Monster Movies, largely for successfully translating the schlock horror of the 30's into the goofy action films of the 90's. But the reboot in 2017 failed so spectacularly because they forgot what made the Mummy fun.

As someone with an amateur interest in Egyptian mythology and history... I would make Ahmanet's curse be that she was symbolically tied to Apep/Apophis, the sun-devouring serpent horror. The ritual was meant as a kind of supernatural condemnation/excommunication from humanity - "You're so horrible that you deserve to be connected to / be part of this unholy power of destruction".
Which is part of why the Medjay believe that she must never be released. Forget "a walking disease", the idea of an avatar of Apep walking free is one that logically ends with either Ra having to come out of retirement, or a giant primordial darkness-serpent devouring the Sun.
What is ultimately revealed, though, is that while sunlight is now rather uncomfortable for Ahmanet, and she does have a variety of spooky powers (including a kind of immortality where any wound inflicted on her just causes the endless night sky within her to leak out and slowly regenerate the damage), the ritual didn't actually have any effect on her mind/personality.
Maybe the power the Egyptians knew as Apophis wasn't actually malicious. Maybe the ritual, through sheer accident (after all, they wouldn't have performed it often, or had much reason to experiment with it and confirm its precise effect), is actually entirely one that empowers the subject, draining away a little bit of this Lovecraftian force of destruction's power and placing it in human hands (which Ahmanet herself would likely recognize is weirdly concordant with various Levantine religions which existed alongside Egypt, and with some aspects of the Egyptian faith itself.)
Maybe even reveal that the reason why Ahmanet feels uncomfortable in sunlight is that Ra/Horus/Re-Horekhty/etc, the countervailing force which is incarnated as the Sun, was taking notice of this little blood clot of Apophis-energy wandering around and deciding to keep a weather eye on it, just in case. It's the discomfort of having a god lean out the doorway of his palace and watch you as you pass by.
Bonus points if you use the Apophis thing as an excuse to have someone explain that snakes IRL aren't evil at some point. (Possibly with Ahmanet summoning a bunch of snakes to distract the heroes, which then... do normal snake things, looking for a place to nest and going all >:[] if anyone gets too close to them. Cue the heroes then having to somewhat sheepishly inch around the snakes so they can continue the chase, maybe with Kalaa excitedly doing a little on-the-spot herpetology as they pass.)

Thank you! I’ve always thought that the Medjai were idiots for creating such a dangerous threat, so turning them into the villains who purposely wanted to torture someone who didn’t deserve it is genius. Something you could add just to add more tension to the climax is have a few of the medjai stubbornly refuse to believe that the mummy isn’t evil and that they wasted their lives following a corrupt order, and betray the others and try to kill the mummy, only for the other medjai to stop them.

Oh gosh, I loved the Mummy as a kid (pretty compounded by the fact I love history, had an Ancient Egypt phase, and was really Bi for Evie and Rick). Also -- growing up in the Middle East, it was fun to see what they got right about Arab culture and laugh at how foreigners dont read (I'm not Arab was just an American living there). Plus knowing Arabic name me smile when I translated before the subtitles sometimes. (Thx for the excuse to gush, your concept is very fun!)

The biggest thing that really buggs me about he Mummy Reboot is the blatent ignorance of how the Egyptian throne actually passed. To simplify, the title of Pharoah and the throne literally passed along the female line to the eldest born girl in the royal family, this is evident in history of there being many female Pharoh's (a couple of whom are incredibly famous). Which meant that if an ancient Egyptian prince wanted to be Pharoh, he'd literally have to marry his sister, half-sister, cousin, neace etc. to gain the title of Pharoh (seriously, just like at the Ptolomy lineage of Pharoh's to see the damage hundred of years worth of incent can do.)
Anyway, (to avoid a history lecture) all this means is that Amunet was already in line for the title of Pharoh/the Throne and she would have inherited it after the passing of her father, but the writers were alike nah, infantacide an innocent baby boy because evil woman wants to rule the world because "rawr girl power".
Normally this kind of stuff doesn't bother me, after all you can take artistic liberties with fantasy all the time. But this, because it's based in a semi-historical setting against a real culture justpisses me off to no end.
Double anyway, I'd take your cinematic universe reboot over anything WB, Disney or any big Hollywood is churning out these days.

My big thing about the new Mummy (2017) movie is that the main character could have just become Pharoah through right of conquest like all other ancient rulers /hj

A lot of writers would have written Imhotep as just sad and angry. Stephen Sommer's movie made him not only sad and angry but also deliciously evil and hammy.
Edit: For an unperfect script, the "sapphic mummy" still has some very cool elements. A lesbian couple uniting their blood to bring an ancient lesbian couple back together, that's pretty neat.
Last edit: I'm already picturing Kalaa infuriating Dr Frankenstein by refusing to call him "Dr" since Frankenstein dropped out of college after finishing the creature.

I’m all for writing this out. Also in the original Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde there were not split personalities. Hyde was Jekyll but free of inhibitions because he had a different face on. It leans more into how you act when you are wearing a mask and no one cane recognize you. Also for female Vampires there’s Carmella which predates Dracula.

    • @baydiac
      @baydiac ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes--Hyde isn't a different personality, he's a disguise. The problem arose when Jekyll kept turning into a wanted criminal in public and couldn't transform back so he had to hide from the police.
If Universal were to ditch the DID association entirely and go back to the story's roots it'd be a grand old time but it's 2023 and films are _still_ fucking obsessed with demonizing the mentally ill, especially people with alters.

Hey Lily! I actually have good news about Jekyll and Hyde in your dark universe pitch. While everyone thinks the big twist is that Hyde is basically Jekyll's weird hulk form and is a split personality, he actually isn't a separate personality at all! Jekyll is just changing his physical form and not caring about the consequences of his actions because he thinks nobody can trace them back to him, it's all a choice on him to be a weird little rat bastard :D the point is that he's repressed and essentially doing the victorian equivalent of being a terrible person on the internet because he has anonymity but with more murder.

and the idea of victor (or how ever the doctor would be named this time around) just STEALING the book of the dead, because he is to blind, or just to lazy to figure life out the hard way, is just GENIUS.
i mean even in the original he is just an idiotic selfobsesed (lack of a better word) Lunatic, that want's to prof he is better, smarter then all of the others.

      ok update:
my friend, her girlfriend, and one of my buddys patched a (maybe?) story together . . . . . . .
here are the things we agreed on:
      1. Dr Bastien-Frank von Stein is the main antagonist to basikly everyone. . . . he is that by virtue of not carring how his blind pursiut of "his genius" is just hurting everyone else, and how his discoveries are just . . . stolen
      2. Dracula stays as unapologeticly evil
      3. secondary antagonists will crop up for some protagonists, for example: police
      4. the "monster" that the doctor creates is not based in any orientation or gender . . . . . just trying to "figure out" how that even works
      5. I'm just gonna admit to this now: we will write this as a silly - "buddy-cop" like adventure story. . . . . . inept villain, stupid slapstick (imortality yay), a car chase or three, and none of this "ow the edge"

The insecurity of Universal (and every other studio trying to copy Marvel) honestly hurts me. We could have had fun stories with goofy concepts, characters that are actually likable and charming. But instead they thought, “we need to strip out all the nuance and charm and just make this as overly serious and sequel baity as possible or our audience won’t take US seriously and won’t get excited about the next twelve movies.”
Also: love being reminded that Dragonforce did a song about Castlevania, that chiptune rendition of Symphony of the Night is awesome.

Man I really enjoyed the 90s Mummy and I forgot just how enjoyable and camp it was, I should really set aside some time to rewatch it again when I get spare time inbetween my studies. I loved that pitch you prompted alongside Mikaila’s storyboard visuals as it already sounds infinitely better than the misogynistic mummy reboot. I’d absolutely love to see this realized into a movie.
And you know, with how you hooked me with that pitch for Egyptian sapphics that want to be reunited and revitalized alongside sapphic archaeologists, I thought of a good launching off point for where a Frankenstein reboot could go from that hook you gave at the end that has the book of the dead be apart of what brings Frankenstein’s monster to life. where it’s about the creature rather than the creator, and the corpse just wanting the simple desire to be loved, accepted, and understood on top of finding his own identity which he believes finding love will help him figure that out, and in realizing that there is more than one kind of love than romantic love, that love can also be found in the form of love for friends that you choose as family as he gradually begins to realize that all his creator proves to be is a egocentric dickhead incapable of reciprocating love back to his creation. And he finds that in the form of found family and mutual support with Kaala and Kendra, and it is thanks to them that he starts to really figure out who he is as a person and in his identity, and maybe he decides to travel nomadically and see more of the world, find other monsters he can connect with and make friends. Heck if you want to add more to his arc in a follow up instalment from the first movie, he might get a gay romantic partner introduced in new installments that accompanies him on his journey as he’s on his own, and really gives the creature much to think about in terms of life and identity, and that found family dynamic can expand as more universal monsters are introduced that reinforces that strong bond between the characters and the ones who come back from previous instalments when they all meet up to kick a rich vampire’s groin and pummel his pompous ass into the dirt.

I love this idea, I wish more rewrites were as bold and creative. I have been obsessed with rewriting classic monsters myself rescue toy and your pitch for a sapphic mummy movie that ends with the mummy living happily ever after is both really sweet and really cool.
Also, I love the post credit scene of Victor Frankenstein using the book of the dead to create his monster. It makes sense given his character and ties both of those stories together.

Yay I feel the same way about a few monsters being just misunderstood. Like if I did the dark universe I wouls have the Wolfman and Frankenstein's monster start out as villains, but end up being heroes. Fighting along side not Van Hellsing, but his grandson Leo Hellsing.

    TW: Addiction and mental health
I know sticking with source details waxes and wanes with the Universal monsters depending on either the script or the aesthetic or anything else w the movies, so yknow grain of salt. But! I think sticking with original concept of Jekyll and Hyde ala the book could work best here; not so much leaning in the implied ableism of Jekyl and Hyde thus making essentially the Monster version of Split (bad movie dont watch) to instead make it more about a talented if wacky scientist who created a false persona thru a special elixir he made losing himself as he falls more and more into his addiction as he has to take harder hits in order to even keep up this other persona. Less DID and more Terrified Professional Person Scared Their Alt Account is Leaked on Main. It's a dicey subject matter but it can be done if handled tenderly. Making this "Monster" character neither good nor bad just ill in need of help and understanding! Youd homage the original novel and add something fresh to the story as a whole!

Was it good, cringy or a damn near insult to the original Dark Shadows series from 1966.

I should watch the Fraser movie because it’s fun, I should avoid the Cruise one because it’s miserable and the only thing I remember people telling me about that film when it came out was that they just stole the ghost concept from An American Werewolf In London.

The Tom Cruise reboot is hilariously the closest to the original mummy.
In Bram Stoker’s Jewel of Seven Stars the Mummy is a woman who needs a dagger and jewel to comeback.
She is vary OP in the books she has all of the powers of the Avatar. And I mean all, the elements, power to her spirit, and reincarnation.
She has 7 fingers on one hand, which others saw as a sign of the Gods.
The reason why she was mummified is because she and her cult were growing so powerful the pharaoh saw her as a threat. So she made a tomb and buried herself till the world forgot her, so when she returned she has no one to oppose her.
Interestingly enough Bram Stocker had different ending to this book, but his wife and friends thought it too depressing so he changed it to a more uplifting end. When you read the book you can see where the original ending could be.
Imagine it, a mummy who is stronger and is considered a deadlier threat, who can exist in three places at the same time, with the power of the 4 elements. And if she dies, she found a spell or reincarnation where she gains a new life, but her mind, personality remains intact.
    Whoa

Lily the saphic concept of the mummy, and the dark universal monster movie, i want to read the story, and pay good money to watch those movies, the idea sound like it would be so much fun.
Why can't movies today be fun instead of edgy? Not everyone wants dark and edgy films that makes everyone go "wow so deep", it's boring, and it would anyone fall asleep. Now if the dcu movies were more fun with comedy, then people would be singing a different tune.
Be seriously lily if you ever write your mummy idea, i would love to read it 😊😁

Having a mummy still be around to be a main character would be a way better setup for shared universe hijinx than Tom Cruise inexplicably gaining Egyptian god powers.
I would definitely want to watch further adventures with these four characters. They could travel around, helping out various monsters. Then, when you want to make your big crossover; they could bring the monsters together to fight Dracula or whoever.

You know this would actually be a great contrast to that Invisible Man movie. With this version of the mummy you have a misunderstood monster who only wants to be reunited with their true love. Then you contrast that with the invisible man a truly evil monster who is driven by abusive obsession and a desire to control a woman rather than actually treat her like a human. So you have a tragic monster first and then one who is tariffing and absolutely irredeemable!

This is what we needed, a story where we get just as invested as the og Brendan Fraser Mummy movies.
Tom Bore Cruise had me wanting to just turn off the TV while on a flight but kept going, bad waste of two hours.
This pitch had me paying attention and wanting to know where it would go, and you brought to the table the same elements from the Fraser movies but with fresh material and, of course, sapphic as fuck. Not to mention having Ardeth Bay (the Medjai) question whether or not other tombs his people are guarding had more people who were wronged in the past, like with Ahmanet.
And that last pitch of the "Dark Universe" Avengers crossover sounded dang cool.

I LOVE THIS IDEA!!!! Also, I really think Jekyll and Hyde could work great as a horror movie if they ditched the demonization of D.I.D., and instead focused on the core of Jekyll and Hyde, which was that Jekyll used the potion as a way to release his inner darkness, which in context means doing things that would have been seen as taboo during the time period. Hell, in the book it is never explicitly stated what exactly Hyde is getting up to during his escapades. For all we know, Jekyll could be a closeted gay man and Hyde could go to gay clubs and not give a fuck. That's my thoughts anyway

  • @Randomixx-xm1ml

What’s interesting about this hypothetical Dark Universe rework is, it doesn’t have to be limited to just the perspectives of the “heroes”. They could center movies around Monsters or other characters that would end up being evil. Like a hypothetical Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde movie could end with Hyde taking over and siding with Dracula, or something. In the scenario where Dracula is the big bad, overarching villain, it would be cool if we’d have had the opportunity to explore the characters that find themselves allied to him just as much as the characters working to oppose him.

They could've just made a romcom about a man escaping his abusive ex and that ex just so happens to be Dracula, but no, we dug a script for Morbius out of the trash at Sony, so we gotta have Renfield morb out.
