Great reaction of a great band. Their latest album 'Hushed and Grim' is brilliant but for me, their masterpiece is 'Blood Mountain' a must-listen album Nick.

I love when Mastadon do the mid-paced, palm-muted, tremolo picking.

Glad you enjoyed it! Mastodon has three equally good but totally different main vocalists, this song is mostly Brent who also plays the lead guitar and I absolutely love his voice also. Brann (drums) has been more prominent on the last few albums and his voice is more radio-friendly I guess I could say. His voice kind of reminds me of Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age. The third vocalist is Troy (bass) who was the main singer on the first heavier albums. He had more (almost death metal style) growling vocals in the beginning but has proven to be a great melodic singer too.
Mastodon has had so much diversity in their music through their career that they’re my friend’s favourite band ever even if he absolutely hates progressive rock. It’s funny that I’m the opposite and have always loved prog rock but we still both love Mastodon. He just likes the heavier and sludgier stuff and I love this more progressive and melodic side of the band. I always thought they couldn’t top this album but the latest one (Hushed and Grim) totally surprised me and is perhaps my favourite. It’s very proggy, moody and ethereal even though there are glimpses of heaviness here and there. Brent (who sings on The Last Baron) only does two songs on the album and I'd love to hear his voice more but Troy really shines on that one .

Mastodon is such a great band. They actually have three members who provide lead vocals. This song features two of them, and the drummer does so occasionally. I actually think the drummer has the best voice, but I imagine it's hard to sing when doing such incredible drumming!
Looks like Mastodon was in Denver with Opeth this past December, so I don't know how soon they might come around again. I haven't been doing much in the way of concerts recently (except King Crimson last year), so I missed that one.

Nick, stoked to see you checking out Mastodon. A great band and a great choice of a song for a first listen. By the way they've had a tour with Opeth last year (in the US at least). I would much enjoy you checking out more from them. This same album is a gem too, wondering if you could get to Ghost of Karelia, Here in The Last Baron the guitarist is singing most of the parts, but in Ghost the lead vocalist is the bassist. Oh, just FYI - the drummer is singing too:) His voice is great, especially on the 2-3 latest albums.

The Mastodon worm hole has opened! One of my favourite bands ever. So much diversity through songs and albums. One of my favourite songs is The Hunter off the album The Hunter. So many great songs and albums.

Hi Nick, I haven't heard this group but I have heard the name. Love the vocalist. [ I'm an Ozzy fan, Lol ] I really enjoyed that. Definitely worth hearing more from this group. Especially their use of effects.... Hair giving you grief ? Maybe a sweatband ? After all sometimes listening to heavy metal is the equivalent of a workout !!! [ Amazon have an Iron Maiden sweatband ] Lol. I use to have hair like Ozzy ... now it's like Peter Gabriel [ & I got the beard ] Great reaction, thankyou, a band worth checking out. Byee Jim X

saw mastodon with opeth and khemmis in Portland OR earlier this year at the Keller....they crushed it my 3rd time seeing them....better in person and the drummer was voted best metal drummer recently.
    ..and is the nicest guy

nice! they play a lot with opeth. i saw them co-headline the heritage/hunter tour with ghost opening, and another time i drove across pa to see them play a one-off tour date. mastodon was touring with the eagles of death metal and russian circles, while opeth was touring with gojira and devin townsend. they met up at the electric factory in philadelphia on a saturday. the line to get in was completely wrapped around 2 blocks and was so long we missed russian circles and devin townsend (could still hear, just couldn't see). that was the infamous show where brent hinds was completely wasted and calling out his tech guy, "fuck you, aaron!"

crack the skye is one of the best metal albums of all-time, and prob mastodon's most proggy album. all 7 songs are bangers and each song flows right into the next one.

I was 15 when this album came out, I went to their concert in Amsterdam with my friend who introduced me to them. I remember falling during a moshpit and all the big metalheads just paused, picked me up, ask me if i was all right and continue the moshpit.

One of my favourite songs from one of my favourite albums by one of my favourite bands!! So glad to see you checking out some Mastodon Nick!
These guys were one of the first Prog-Metal bands I got into and it started a long amazing journey for me. This album, along with “Leviathan” and “Blood Mountain” are absolutely essential listening for any fan of Progressive Metal in my opinion. A very unique band, just like you said they sound nothing like any other band I’ve ever heard.
    Thanks Nick! 🤘🤘

If I were to recommend three albums of theirs to represent their different eras, those would be the chosen ones. All masterpieces on their own (every Mastodon album is pretty great, but these are standouts for me).

This is such a consistently good album. Divinations is by far one of my favorite songs on the album, and it is criminally under-reacted to on TH-cam. The guitar solo in that song is so intense and driving.

Hi Nick, love your channel. Long time viewer, you and Lex are so great. Greetings from Wales.
Can you react to the band Triptykon, the song is Tree Of Suffocating Souls. Off the Melana Chasmata album. Tom G Warrior, the main man, is a Swiss heavy metal legend. If you haven't heard them already or his old band Celtic Frost you should check them out.
They are beautiful and disgusting in one molten ball of despair and it's so good.

      Man . . . VERY *H E A V Y* - makes Celtic Frost sound like a pop band :p. Well, maybe not that poppy 😉.
I'm just astounded that Tom Warrior "worked" for H.R. Giger.
      Both awesome bands \m/.

@@mvunit3 Yeah, the only Frost stuff that can hold a candle to Triptykon in terms of sheer heaviness is some of “Monotheist”. To me that’s basically the transition to the new band. Triptykon might just be the heaviest band on the planet.

Mastodon is , without doubt, a great band. But their music is not for every day, you have to be in the mood and you have to sit down and listen, otherwise you cannot enjoy. I have some of their albums, but I don't like all songs, depending on who's singing

  • @puppetmaster8551
    @puppetmaster8551 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Mastodon is incredible, best discography in metal, definitely recommend doing more of them, they’re such a unique band and have 3 lead vocalists 1 being their insane drummer. Highly highly recommend checking out their song “roots remain” also if you want to hear their real heavy shit check out something from their debut album like “mother puncher” or “March of the fire ants”. Anyway great reaction
