Do you have access to a test bar? I had my tailstock true on centers but my ways were worn closer to the chuck so id get a slight irregular measurement in the middle of the sweep then back to zero at the tailstock.
Maybe a test bar can help isolate where your taper is.

it doesn't matter. make things good where you use them. the rest doesn't matter.
