20% service charge being billed as separate from an "optional" extra tip and gratuity is a bit absurd in my opinion. Expecting all diners to tip 40% (or more if that second 20% was based on the tipped total) on the subtotal is fucking bonkers and should not be normalized! I'd rather they just bump up the menu price by an extra $60.
@@kt3505 So is the pricing strategy. I ate at Vespertine, and the base menu was $395+20% tip and tax, which comes out a bit over $500, just like Smyth. Had zero qualms paying for the experience at that price. Its not the price, its the way you go about it. A 40% obligatory tack-on is silly and ludicrous.

This experience is as much about prestige and status as it is the food.At least at Subway the tip is optional.
