      You could attach the shelf that holds the records with rare earth magnets. You could put them on both sides so it really could be reversible!

    Great video! I just made a Now Playing stand for my records last week and also used Walnut. It's a walnut base with a maple strip in the middle that transitions into the maple back support. Looks great! Yours is brilliant - would never have thought about that design.

    @bobt2522 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video. It is good to see and hear more of Eric. As for changes, you might consider attaching the grooved block to the thin plywood instead of to the upright. It would act as a stop for the upright. Then (without giving up stability) you could look at attaching the upright differently, possibly a pivot or a vertical slide.

    The little foot to hold the record was just a good idea, but after adding the texture with the v-bit, it's...groovy.

    Great little how can I make my life better project! As for version 2, build a full case for the record player. When the top opens up it has the now playing stand built into the underside of the top. It could even have Rockler brass hinges, handle and lock to keep Eric from touching it. :-)

  • @rml015
    @rml015 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome idea! Definitely want to make a version of this for my turntable. I would probably just use a plunge router and edge guide to make the slot for the smaller board though.

  • @BruceAUlrich
    @BruceAUlrich 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    To improve it, I think I would use a thicker material for the bottom piece. You could use some 3/4 plywood and still put the veneer on there or use the same stock as the vertical piece. It would just give it a little more rigidity. Cool project!

    • @MakeSomething
      @MakeSomething  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Bruce A. Ulrich unfortunately 1/8" is the thickest piece that'll slide under the turntable.

    Love the video! I saw it when it came out, and randomly decided to rewatch it just because I love the idea. My only issue is that you put a design on both sides, but the record holding shelf is only on one. Otherwise, looks great and Eric is amazing at camera work to make the shop look huge.

    Just wondering, what's the story with Toledo being Glass City. I know about 20 years ago, as a truck driver, I picked up a load of glass at an old Libby Owens Ford plant once.

    • @dandavis5832
      @dandavis5832 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fed Rooster around the turn of the century Toledo was a big manufacturer of glass jars and bottles. over time that developed into art glass. Now it's just broken glass everywhere, people pissing on the stairs. They just don't care.

    • @fedrooster

  • @BradleyHerrin
    @BradleyHerrin 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have that same turntable. I love it! Also, great video.
    As to what I would do differently, I would use more substantial wood on the bottom piece for the sake of form only. I think the plywood will function just fine, but it's super thin. I'm thinking a bottom board that is similar or the same in thickness as the back board and put a matching through tenon on it to go through the routed hole.

  • @califas87
    @califas87 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like the styling suggestions about the backboard. A function suggestion would be to cut the bottom board like a T at the top so that it can't slide through all the way. I'm thinking that with vibrations from loud music, the bottom board might slide out and the the back board would fall down behind the cabinet.

    I think I'd go for a mini record cabinet. Small shelf with feet, one shelf on the bottom, with space for a few LPs, and a second shelf above only enclosed on the bottom and sides. Holes for your wires, protrusion on the back with your "now playing" stand.

    How about LEDs that light up the wall behind the stand. Maybe make them sound reactive so they pulse in time with the music. Maybe even add some color sensors so they read the color of the cover and use that to influence the back light color.

    Maybe make the V-groove ledge big enough for about 5 to 10 of you favorite albums. So you have your best ones at the ready for a unexpected uninvited party :p and maybe a dark or light veneer to make a good contrast for the cnc or laser logo.

    could you just build a frame around the existing cover with a "hook" on the back so when you close it there's a place to rest the sleeve.
    or to improve on the current design add a ball joint type of hinge so that you could just flip up the the holder when you need it instead of having to removed it and then put it back together upside down

    with the tools you have, i personally would LOVE to just get an old but working record player pull it apart and just build it up from scratch. Make it more personal add a tiny bit of steampunk feel to it. And maybe integrate the record stand into the lid maybe. But that is just my imagination working overtime...

  • @johnschoolfield9339
