The video got weirdly blurry from around the point when you showed pics of Weenz and Tweek. Might want to look into that. Also it made my face all wet.
Wonderful video and wonderful sentiments as well. Nicely done. Just curious but what is the name on the center back urn? I can read Tweek, Weenz, Sydney, Peanut, and Starr, but not the last one.
@@MakeSomething I lost my fur baby just a year ago and that’s one thing on my to do list is to make my Bella a beautiful tribute to remember her by forever. 🙏🏻❤️
Very nice tribute. We're Min Pin people and adopted seven over the last 20 years and only one is still with us. Started woodworking/scroll sawing almost a year ago and decided to make something of real value, seven scroll saw portraits. These handmade portraits are priceless. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. This couldn't have come at better time to hear. This past Wednesday, we had to say goodbye to my 10 year old dog. As a fellow saw dust maker and dog owner, thank you.
@makesomething I watch your videos because as a new woodworker, your skills are something I hope to pick up someday. Your old videos and new ones matter and mean something to me. I have two 12yr old pyradors that are the world to me, and this video hits on so many levels. Keep doing the amazing work you do. Just know Weeenz has an amazing dad and a beautiful resting place now to surround him in your love.
In the last 3 years I made 2 urns, for my parents. Watching a loved one slip away from cancer gives you such a helpless feeling and being able to go to the workshop with a real purpose helped alleviate the feeling of helplessness. (Also, dimensioning rough lumber by hand is very physically cathartic!)
I cried. Totally cried. We recently lost our beautiful big barky girl, Luna. I love what you're doing here. When I'm confident enough to do it, I'll be making a nice urn for her, too. Sending peace and love from Wales UK 🙏❤️
I've done a few small projects here and there over the years, but a few years ago someone gave me an entire piece of purple heart lumber that I let hang around and around, mainly because I felt I didn't have the skill to make anything that would do the wood justice. Then my mom passed away in Dec 21 of COVID. I knew immediately I was going to make her an urn from the purple heart, that that's why I was given it. I found some plans online for an urn and made it out of that purple heart. It ain't perfect by any means, but it is perfect for her. It is by far the single most meaningful thing I have made.
@critter42. Well done. There is something about some thing we make ourselves that makes it special. Giving our talents no matter our skill level is so personal. I love being able to say “I made this for you”
Your comment at 11:00 about covering mistakes reminded me of what I was told decades ago. "Doing joinery, prepping , finishing, etc. is the result of skill and experience. Hiding mistakes is artistry. This video was especially appropriate as I am currently making my own urn. Some people freak out about this. But, after 50 years of woodworking, I would prefer to be kept an urn I made with my own 2 hands instead an urn made in a factory where I would have been a stranger with a credit card. This format was great. I am subscribed because I just love watching your delivery, message, meaning, passion, etc., etc. Be you, man. God bless.
Well I wasn't expecting to cry during a box making video, but here we are. I've been putting off making an urn for my dog Bruce who passed away 3 years ago. You're right, they deserve better than the boxes their ashes come in. Maybe it's time.
Thanks for this video. My dog just got diagnosed with very aggressive cancer, and is currently struggling with surgery after getting his spleen removed. He has been at my side or my feet while we've watched a lot of your videos. There's nothing more noble than honoring your friends. Thank you for this inspiration. I'm gonna spend my time with my dog, my best friend.
I knew when I saw the thumbnail that this was going to be a tough one to watch. Just laid my best friend of the past 20 years to rest a couple weeks ago, my Miss Kitty. I didn't have her cremated, but the casket I made for her was absolutely the best "box" I've ever made. Not the best as in my favorite, but the one that came out the best and that I put the most care and work into, because she definitely deserved nothing but the best for all of the love and happiness she had given me for the last 20 years. I'm so glad to see that I'm not alone in my grief or in my desire to make my best friend one last special project! Thank you for this video, and to all of the other wonderful people in these comments thank you for sharing your thoughts and stories as well and know that you also are not alone in your grief... I miss you, Miss Kitty 🐈⬛ thank you for 20 wonderful years and countless beautiful memories 🖤
You said there would be no crying in this video, and yet here I am, all misty-eyed in the first five minutes. I look forward to your uploads because I love your content/channel. I am a professional graphic designer/3D modeler and a hobbyist woodworker. Great job on this project! I'm so sorry for your loss!
This one hits me hard! Watching it while my bestest Doxie is laying next to me (Trixie - 13yrs.). This is such a special way to memorialize the love we have for our little friends. Thanks for sharing it!
The world is crazy. I literally had to put my french down this morning after he had a massive seizure. They are definitely part of the family. Thanks for the video. P.s your edits are great
All your videos that I have watched have given me inspiration and ideas to do more with my woodworking. You explain everything very well. Thank you for all the great content.
Great video! Good topic. Learned some new techniques. Loved the editing. That degree gauge going to 45… nice! Makes me want to get back in the shop. My pup is still young but I know someday…. Thanks for sharing it with us.
It's always so hard to lose a furbaby. This is such a wonderful tribute to the unconditional love we have for our pets and that our pets have for their humans.
Dave, I have never seen a video of yours that I don't like. Some I like and the rest I love. This to me, which includes the visits with Grandpa Picciuto videos, this is one of my favorites. It brings out the "real" you showing you passion and heart. Your desire to do something for someone else (pet, family, or friend) and how much heart you put into that project. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Because that's what you do in each video. You don't just do a project, you tell us your life along with the project. And, you encourage me to get out to my shop, hit record, and Make Something. Thank you again and God bless.
As usual, great video, honest conten. The pet life span thing, so true. That's why a turtle make so much sense. My kids will inherent Walter. However, fethching takes a bit...
I love the thought and passion that you put into all your builds and even though I haven't had much time lately to watch the quality uploads you produce, I can't wait to binge watch them all.. keep doing what you do buddy and all the best for the future..
Literally started this morning on the second urn for a friend’s dogs. When he asked, I was immediately overwhelmed with the idea that this is the greatest gift of art, to provide someone with comfort and solace in a time of need. It’s such an honor that they trust me to do this for him and his family. What better reason to learn and develop art than this? Thank you so much for sharing Dave! I’ve been a fan for so long, and you continue to touch my heart and life in so many ways!
Thank you, those are beautiful keepsake boxes to hold on to your memories. If I had something like that and people asked what I keep in them, I would just tell them, that is where my heart is.
What a wonderful project - so sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. They are such a wonderful gift to us, but wish they could live longer with us. I love the project and attention to detail.
David your energy and passion has always came through my screen and slapped me in the face! When I'm feeling burned out here comes o'l Dave with a that passion and charges my inner creator. As you say "Stay Passionate and Make Somethin! You look good by the way, lost a little weight looks like.
Excellent video.Your workmanship is fantastic and it really means so much. I made an urn for a loved one of mine and that was one of my favoritest projects. I need to watch you video on making edge banding!
Fellow ween owner!!! They are the best breed. We love our little Cashew. Thank you for this meaningful video and sorry for the losses mentioned in this video. ❤❤
I also have dachshunds and love them. The love of my life died in 2020 and I have a necklace of her to wear to keep her with me. Love these beautiful urns. I don't keep ashes, but I keep lots of photos. You are awesome. As for YT, keep doing what you do. It's why we love you.
Thanks for sharing. It is a very personal task building urns and not easy at times as memories are connected to the urns. Remembering the best times is great.
Love the new style. I heard you talking about it on the podcast and was in total agreement with you. I have just started making videos again, inspired by you and your podcast mates and am finding the editing tough. Got 2 filmed but none finished. Making an urn for a loved one is tough but rewarding. I like knowing that Mum is in a place built with love
Finally, someone making something so worth while. You have me thinking of what I need to do for our dogs that have passed on. I still miss them and think of them often. You’ve succeeded in inspiring people, well me at least. Thank you.
Thank God for doxies... my wife and I love ours. We have had two before our Polly and boy are they a bunch of trouble and fun all wrapped in one package! I agree with you that a hand made gift is a gift from your heart. Keep up the good work and I just love your video's.
Long time viewer here, David. I can relate to your sentiment about how pets steal our hearts. Their presence in our lives is an incredible gift. I enjoy the content you create. Make the content you want to make. You have many gifts (musical, making, and the ability to be real and relatable on camera to name a few). Keep up the good work.
I really like the new direction, philosophy, photography, dialog, and editing direction that you are going in. These last few videos have been much more enjoyable than in the past. And they display a whole new level of professionalism in what you are doing. You are nailing it!
Four minutes in and this is already my new favorite video of yours. I also did not cry on camera while watching this video. The boxes are beautiful and gave me some new ideas. The story behind them is also beautiful. We love our pets almost as much as they love us. Fwiw, I've really been enjoying the new video style you have been developing lately. I'm just here enjoying the ride. Thanks for all of it.
These boxes are so well thought out. I love the way the “false bottom” removes. Really clever thought. And the contrast of white oak and walnut looks incredible.
I have been REALLY enjoying your new style. I liked the old stuff also, but the refresh was nice. As long as you do what makes you happy, you'll find your audience. You come across as a kind, caring, genuine person. You will always have an audience just being you.
Thank you for all your entertaining , educational and inspirational videos. I have been a fan for over 8 years at least and this video hit me hard. I have lots of special pieces of wood that I have held onto for longer than my wife thinks I should and we lost our amazing Pomeranian (Sir Paddington) over 2 years ago after 11 great years. I need to take one of these special pieces of wood and make something out of it to store Paddington and his keepsakes in. Keep it up! You do make videos that mean something to MANY, MANY people! Much Love, Chris J.
You were one of the first channels that I started to follow in my wood working journey. I really appreciated this video, your passion is what drives you. I am getting tired of seen different channels do the same thing to compete with the algorithm! My beagles mean the world to me and share the time in the shop with me. Keep doing what puts a smile on your face and others will follow!
New style or old style - I love your videos! Regardless of style, it is the content that has always had substance. Your woodworking videos are the most 'saved' channel I have in my youtube library because I constantly go back to them for guidance. For what it's worth, I love the videos you produce that demonstrate how to do something complicated without a specialized tool, such as bowls without a lathe. Thank you for consistently putting thought, effort, and care into your videos. This one is no exception - very touching to hear of the doggies and kitty cat in your life. 😢
I've just finished my second urn for my dad (we split his ashes into 3 for me, my brother and my uncle). I dont have the skill, knowledge or creativity to do something like this but the process of building something meaningful is therapeutic. As my dad was a craftsmanship himself I hope he is proud of what I've built for his final resting place.
Thank you for this, I lost my little buddy in April unexpectedly. I finished an urn for him that sits on our mantle. Keep making videos your way! Thanks again, from Southwest Ohio
I have your poster hanging in my workshop. It’s the best mantra ever. A workshop I run with my best friend and long time collaborator. We met in high school and wanted to make something :) and we are still going strong many years later. Thanks for your inspiring videos and energy!
In my grandparents house, just outside the bathroom they had four framed drawings of some cats and dogs. The dogs are stood on two legs and are peeing up the wall with some cats looking from above. the next one is the cats peeing at the dogs and the next is dogs retaliating and so on! I spent 20 years of visiting in the summers and absolutely loved them, thought they were hilarious and always said I wanted them. A year before my nan died she bagged them up and sent me off with them. They then spent 10 years in that same Argos bag in a cupboard as I always had the plan that one day I would be a good enough woodworker to make a frame for them all to mount in as the pictures and the frames are the piece collectively. This year I finally made that frame and it now hangs just outside my bathroom door. It's an American white oak frame with finger joint corner made with a jig made by you on this channel! That's what woodwork is to me too, meaningful items that are just much more special than a bought item.
Thanks for this video. You brought back some fond memories of woodworking with meaning. A family that were neighbors to us were like family, which never changed after we moved to another state. One of the children in their family became a gifted woodworker as an adult. When his mother passed he made a beautiful urn for her cremains. My mother asked him after the funeral if he would make one for her when she passed. Several years later when my mother died, he called and told us of her request. He was experiencing serious health issues at the time, but he insisted that he honor her wishes. The box he made was a masterpiece, with personalizations that he knew she would have loved. We only had a brief time to appreciate the beauty of the urn before she was interred next to my father, but the love and sentiment is more beautiful than the piece itself. The last gifts he made for his mother and mine are by far the most cherished of all of the wonderful pieces he ever crafted.
I loved this video. The boxes are really showing the amount of love you had for each of these furbabies. While I really enjoy every piece you make for the rental house, this video really touched a different part of my heart.
I got into woodworking heavy after my Dad passed away. I didn't want any Mom to have to put his military flag in a cheap made Amazon display. So I made one out of walnut that my Dad had laying around for years. I knew a little bit to get started. After 8 months of watching TH-cam videos like yours I was finally confident in tackling it. Damned if I didn't find talent I didn't know I had. I must naturally get it from my father. He was a woodworker. Btw the flag display turned out amazing. I wish I could share pictures with you. Thanks for all the lessons and inspiration. You're an awesome dude.
Thank you for the wonderful video and the beautiful relationship with your loved ones. I miss my little one so much, been gone 2 years now and am blessed everyday with my little Muffin everyday. The thought that went into these beautiful boxes is amazing and I absolutely love watching you create and show step by step what you are making. Not gonna lie, definitely teared up. Bless you and keep making these wonderful projects and videos!
You are always inspiring, not only as a woodworker but as an honest, caring and giving human being. I don’t think you realize how much you give all of us who watch your wonderful videos. Thank you!
Great work Dave, as always, and a touching tribute to the most loyal friends we'll ever have. The sincerity you show in your videos isn't lost on your audience - we can see that you make the most valuable thing of all, a difference.
I think there’s a real, unmentioned brave compassion that goes into entering a pet relationship that you go into with a sense of committed companionship. We know it’s brief, we know the loss will hurt, and we do it anyway ❤
Such beautiful builds and a wonderful way to commemorate the best friends we get in this life. Give me a dog over a human any day of the week. Still miss our Rusty Dawg, best lab ever.
You have no idea how much I’ve learned from you and your channel over the years. I’ve been a maker now for about 7ish years. You and Drew Fisher have taught me and inspired me. You and James (I think) bourbon moth have inspired me to change up my tool game to Festool. I too have changed up my video editing for my crappy videos. lol. I’m a huge dog lover myself and I’m truly sorry for your loss.
Thank you. This touched my heart and motivated me to make the urns I’ve been putting off. Your sincerity and nature are seen thru this. There’s no love like what we share with our animals. Im convinced they’ll be there waiting on us when we cross.
I don't watch all your videos right when they come out, but whenever I watch one I go on a channel binge because your art is incredible. It's been so cool to watch how your style has progressed over the years. Every single video is a joy to watch from an artistic video sense in addition to the excellent woodworking content. I definitely feel inspired watching your content and am particularly excited about your small shop videos as I start my own woodworking journey. Thank you for sharing your talent with us
I love this genuine side of you David. My wife and I have had two dachshunds, Spunky and Oscar Meyer(yes his middle name was Mayer). Our dogs then and our two dogs now are our children since our children are grown. This new style will make the anticipation so much more meaningful waiting on your next videos. I am getting tired of some of the people I follow, because nothing changes with them. It was fun in the beginning with some of these people, but it’s nothing but repetition from them now. You are doing great with this new style so don’t be to hard on yourself. Waiting to see what is next.
oh man, now I’m crying! my little bluebelle, a louisiana catahoula, passed this past year! I too have been intending to make an urn for her ashes and keep putting it off. perhaps you are giving me inspiration to finally make it. sorry about your loss.
i really love the past few videos you’ve made, they are true to you while being a clear example of trying something new. you also have made great use of changing between voiceovers/tool noise. i know im not the only one who appreciates the hard work you’ve clearly put in :)
What a beautiful tribute. We lost our dog Teddy 2 years ago 2 days before Valentines Day. I am crying again, and it is good to do it over a family member who gave us his unconditional love if only for a few short years (F Cancer). I am still trying to figure out my own way to memorialize him, especially for my wife.
Dave so sorry for you and your wife’s loss sending prayers to you both 🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️ PLEASE PLEASE keep making videos like this that means something to you because we can’t feel your passion that’s why I watch your videos as a new woodworker I’m looking for something to give me inspiration and you Sir being the amazing artist and craftsmen you are gives me that inspiration. Thank you for sharing your story with us all.🙏🏻❤️ And too all the amazing fur babies we have had to say goodbye to ❤️❤️❤️
I'm a weekend woodworker and run a large dog boarding/daycare facility the rest of the time. This hit home. I've known and loved thousands of amazing dogs in my lifetime and wish I could make every one of them an urn like that when their time comes.
It took me 2 years to be able to make an urn for my dog. Every time I started I broke down. Every time I lose one it's a huge part of me gone. Every one of them I've lost is with me, in my nightstand but in all honesty, much as I love them all both my cats and dogs, I can't do it any more it just hurts too much. This must have been one of the hardest videos to make, well done for keeping it together on camera - though I suspect there were a few close calls and retakes. They are just such amazing creatures and our bond with them is something so very special.
I'm not a wood worker, but I am a maker that sometimes uses wood. Watching channels like yours is inspiring and informative and that is not disposable, or boredom content! Thanks for all you share 🙂
Make Something that Means Something. What a great new catchphrase and philosophy. I recently made a simple shadow box for my dad's military career (he's 80 now and eschewed fanfare at the time). But showing and explaining it to him (he struggles to remember things now) and to all the grandkids was a true pleasure. And now I'm thinking with wet eyes about my beagle Violet who we said goodbye to a couple of years ago, after 15+ years of companionship. I know that that little ceramic pawprint they give you is kind of mass-produced, even kitschy, but it means the world to me.
Such an amazing emotional video and an amazing tribute to those that love you through everything and are always there!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for this video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You had me welling up within the first couple of minutes David, and I’m with Mr Vonnegut. Loving the editing and your sincerity and integrity too. Thank you. Had a good reminisce about our own absent friends ❤
Beautiful job on the boxes. Pets are like children to many people, and it's only fitting that they get a proper urn. I liked the detail for adding a small area for tags, collar, etc. Very nice!

David your energy and passion has always came through my screen and slapped me in the face! When I'm feeling burned out here comes o'l Dave with a that passion and charges my inner creator. As you say "Stay Passionate and Make Somethin! You look good by the way, lost a little weight looks like.
Everyone has the goodest dog. We don’t deserve them.
Excellent video.Your workmanship is fantastic and it really means so much. I made an urn for a loved one of mine and that was one of my favoritest projects. I need to watch you video on making edge banding!
Everything about this video was absolutely beautiful, thank you for sharing this precious memory with us ❤ sending love to you and yours.
Awesome man. I appreciate your thoughts and efforts in these builds. ❤ I have enjoyed learning from you for over 7 years now. Thank you
Fellow ween owner!!!
Thank you for making this video. You made me remember all the love and affection I got from my golden retrievers, Cosmo and Titus.
You are memorable; you are inspiring; you do make “make something” that is meaningful…not just your projects…just you being you. Thanks!
Thank you.
I feel like this is your space and channel and you should do exactly what you want to do I really enjoy your videos
I love the new video style. You’re doing great!
Keep doing what you want, how you want!
Thank you!
Thank God for doxies... my wife and I love ours. We have had two before our Polly and boy are they a bunch of trouble and fun all wrapped in one package! I agree with you that a hand made gift is a gift from your heart. Keep up the good work and I just love your video's.
I can relate 100% to what you said about dogs and pets. They give us everything and this tribute is deserved. Thank you for this video.
I was watching this with my dog next to me and had to give him a big hug! They are really so wonderful! Thanks for all, the video and the message.
Just be you. We will follow.
Enjoy the journey, and so will we.
One of my favorite videos. Very heartfelt.
I appreciate your videos. You be you, that's why we love you
I do appreciate ever time you post .
We have 2 weens... Couldn't imagine living without one now. Beautiful way to honor your family members. Well done!
I get something out of every video you put out, and really appreciate everything you do towards helping this community. Thank you
I got into woodworking heavy after my Dad passed away.
My own most meaningful project was an urn for my dad's ashes. So much love and so many tears went into it. Thank you for being so real with us.
Thank you for sharing your talent with us
Loved this one. Dachshund owner here and can't imagine a world without them.
Just simply, well done! Thank you.
I have never been so happy and learnt so while crying, thank you.
Imagine how much harder it would be to say goodbye to our pets if they did live as long as us...or even just another 10 years or so. Great video.
oh man, now I’m crying! my little bluebelle, a louisiana catahoula, passed this past year!
This one has inspired me to do this project. Our pets are an incredible source of love and compassion.
Celebrate and remember that the dogs and kitty had long, happy lives with plenty of love from their owners. Their lives were well lived. ❤
Very nice!
