I have about half of the expansions. I dont plan to buy any movie sets, villains base is very hard to get so you can skip it plus one expansions to it. I will probably also skip Venom, Deadpool and Dimensions.
You should definitely skip the movie sets. Deadpool expansion is also kinda stupid and can be skipped. Villains core set and it's expansion aren't really necessary although I'd recommend it after everything else if you find it for a fair price. Core set with Dark City are the main must buys if you're going to get into the game.

I felt shards broke the game a bit. Basically save shards solely for the mastermind. Maybe burning shards will help.
