Will we survive our Hoenn journey with no items in battle and no hacks?! This is the ultimate Gen 3 Pokemon challenge and one of the hardest pokemon challenges ever. Pokemon Emerald, the definitive version of Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, is a great and challenging game for Pokemon challenge videos. There's even a secret battle against Steven at the end in Meteor Falls - if you can make it that far! Definitely my hardest Pokemon challenge playthrough and hardest challenge run yet. *IMPORTANT NOTES: [1]* As listed in the rules, the no items in battle rule applies starting right before the first gym (you'll see why!). *[2]* I didn't use Pickup Zigzagoons in the party at the start because that's technically against the rules since they are not yet capable of being HM slaves. *[3]* Potions are indeed necessary since there are trainers you need to beat before reaching wild Pokemon that don't attack. After that, it would have been possible to take down Silcoon/Cascoon with Struggle without Potions, but that would have merely taken longer. Both methods are incredibly challenging, but for different reasons: one is challenging, one is merely tedious, and I chose challenging because... well, I'm crazy. Until next challenge! :D

||ALL POKEMON are replaced with Magikarp || Magikarp can only learn 4x40PP moves|| Magikarp has truant ability ||pokecenters are closed ||healing items are GONE || evolution is disabled || VS seeker is gone || trainers only give enough money to afford 1 pokeball per capture location. ||all trainers have 6 pokemon at the level of their highest LV pokemon || you will get a forced PP-heal before every battle ||
The most insane challenge is going as far you can with Magikarp only on Red and Blue.
you know, why not try planting oran berries at the early game while you grind so you have an infinite supply of healing items to use instead of leaving it to chance to get to lvl 15.
edit: p.s. why not hold a berry to cure status effects? I know I sound like a backseat driver at this point, but really want to help you out with future runs.
I actually did plant a few berries, but thankfully never ended up needing them. And I did have Karen hold status-healing berries a couple times in this run :D

Imagine being your characters dad. Youre a famous gym leader and your son sets out to be a trainer only to flail around with a dirty fish, nothing else. What an embarrassment. No wonder he went out to get some more pokeballs and never came back, leaving the child raising to the mom.

Just so you know, struggle is typeless and stronger than tackle, meaning it’s more effective to struggle through the first gym.
Yes, but recoil is an issue, also he didn't realize that cascoon has no attacks, which he could have used to stop using potions

You could have healed at the pokecenters after the forest you just have to use all your PPs on silcoons and castcoons

He would have still had to go through 40 splash PP and he'd be getting very low on hp by time he finishes battling the cascoon/silcoon, since the hits will do less damage each turn, wouldn't really have helped too much, just make it longer to get rid of all the splash PP to then struggle

Maybe the best challenge I have seen. Wearing down all splash pp to activate struggle as your only damaging move + not be able to heal at Pokemon centers is hardcore. No battle items to amp your stats, even took the time to ev train and challenge Steven. You did me proud!

Should’ve grabbed zigzagoon in the beginning to use their pick up ability so grinding would’ve been better

Man gotta respect the grind of re'eving your pokemon just to beat the elite four. A focus band could have activated multiple times and you definitely could have beaten Steven!

Logan Johnson First off, this game is Gen 3. It doesn't even make sense to call me a Genwunner.
2nd, praising the replay value of this game says absolutely nothing about my opinions of any other generation besides the last one which I disliked for several legitimate reasons (such as cutting pokemon, removing staple features, lacking depth and polish, costing 50% more, having the complete experience behind several pay walls i.e. 'Nintendo Switch Online, DLC, Pokemon Home', being full of bugs and glitches, Gamefreak andTPC treatment of the community, etc.)and not something as petty such as newness.
3rd I don't dislike newer games just because they're new. That's just stupid. I dislike them because they lack the charm of older games in important ways. Older games were more difficult, less linear, cutscenes were more rare and less intrusive, dialogue got to the point quicker, and the exploration elements of the game gave you many incentives to do that very thing, whereas newer games just don't. Especially this last game. You'll be hard pressed to find anyone who says the exploration aspect of Sword and Shield was good.
In addition to that, ever since the series went 3D, I felt less like the games were my story/experience and more like me riding along for a character's journey with a predetermined ending. Sure the formula for pokemon has been the same forever. But now it just feels like you're going through the motions instead of truly playing. But that's just MY opinion on the matter. Others might disagree.
Anyway, if you're gonna call me out, get it right. Call me petty for not liking the direction this franchise and the games are heading in. Because I don't. But please stop your weak attempt at discrediting me because you feel differently. If you like the new games, great. Go hug on Wooloo. But I expect more and better from a 30+ year-old company with a 20+ year-old IP that has massed more wealth than other franchise that existed several decades before it.

Couple tips:
If you wait for one of the trainers who turn to look away from you and then pause your game, when you unpause they will be stuck looking away from you for a while so you can freely walk past thm without risking an encounter.
Struggle deals typeless damage. It would have most certainly worked better than Tackle and Flail against the rock Pokemon in Roxanne's gym. With access to battles against Cascoons and Silcoons you could have gotten your PP to 0 fairly easily and saved yourself a lot of time & pokedollars.
After watching your content for a very long time, I need to say that no matter what type of video you make it's always top quality and just gets better and better. I can't wait to see what you do next. Great video as always and I can't believe you attempted Emerald with a feebas named Karen 😂

That line had no permission to be that raw. It almost sounds like a villain one-liner.
You could have used those pokeballs to catch a bunch of zigzagoons with the pickup ability. Then you would have a limitless supply of items to heal/sell for money.
I played a "Trash Collector" run once, and it got very boring checking my Zigzagoons for items every 2-3 battles.
I made it even more boring by making a spreadsheet to calculate that my Zigs were each earning me an average of $0.15 per battle.

I loved this idea! What a challenge. Fav part was beating the electric gym leader. That sounded like the most satisfying gym battle ever. Like how I imagine beating a gym leader is intended to feel!
My favorite part of this playthrough was watching the psychological breakdown of Silph. You are absolutely mad, lad.

Upon rewatching this I think I noticed something that Silph didnt think about. After being able to encounter ralts he didnt need to be so scared about healing at a poke center because it would've only known growl so he could've used all his splash pp against them and then struggle train after
I love this playtrough, catching one Feebas is a challange itself, but bring it to beat the whole Gym challange & League itself is more than that

Could have caught some Zigzagoons with the starting Pokéballs so that they could scrounge up some potions and sellable items with Pickup...you'll need a HM slave later on anyway as well as a filler Pokémon to fight the Psychic gym leaders, so might as well get them early on.
Could also have healed at the Pokémon Center and used up Splash PP against cocoon Pokémon...
Could have given Feebas the Oran Berries so that she could heal without taking up a turn
Could have built up Double Team against the Spinda

This has truly been the most exciting pokemon video I've ever seen - Despite this being a Feebas only run.
Honestly hats off to you for this incredible nonsensical and difficult challenge. At times like this I ask myself who asked for this and why Would anyone take on such a challenge but this is art

For future attempts: If you run into Metapods/Kakunas/Cascoons/anything that can't actually attack you, then you can hard grind on that type of pokemon freely. Since you can go back to use the Pokemon Center, then come back and spend all your moves on those pokemon before starting to struggle them to death. You weren't in any risk of grinding once you had access to those Cascoons, and wasted tons of potions.
Beating Pokemon with Feebas is easier, than with Magicarp, because Feebas can learn some TM. It's a nice run and sorry me english is awefull...^^" Greetings from germany.

Great Video. I think you could have made it a little easier on yourself once you got access to the route with Silcoon/Cascoon because you could have used the Pokecenter and then safely wasted all Splash PP on them to save some potions. Keep it up!

Imagine professor Birch at the beginning sitting there watching as a kid tells a fish to splash a zigzagoon to death, or him being in the situation of getting jumped and pulls feebas out and is like "whoops I grabbed the wrong Pokemon". That would be a hilarious animated scene and should be a animated short film, like adventure''s of Prof. Birch or something like it and shows Brandon using splash to "save" professor Birch.
