Is it better to run the Stock mic on these radios or is power mic work ok? I have heard they don't like power mics. Is that true. I use a d104 with mine and I have not heard any negative about my transmission.
@@BellsCB Thanks. I had a guy in my area help me dial in my Power Mic while we were talking. I was set to low and he got me to a spot that is sounding good. I had to turn the Radio mic setting to 3 and the d104 to about 5.5 and he said it sounded clear and strong. I was worried since I saw videos were people said power mics over modulated on the 980.
I too have this radio and have contacted as far as Georgia from here in Az. (2000 miles) on just about 10 watts on ssb. Not to bad for running barefoot.
We do a tune-up, there's not a lot of adjustments but I do my best. It shows it on the video. Regular power before the tune-up was 3w peaking 12w and 12w SSB PEP.
I just bought this like 8 months ago. I hear ppl far away. But no one hears me, is my mic toast? Or am I doing something wrong? I even hit the talkback button and couldn't hear myself
You can adjust the talkback volume. It may be turned all the way down. How is your SWR? Good ground on the radio and the antenna? How is the radio powered, 12 volt plug or wired to a better source?
These are mud-duck radios out of the box. Get it peaked and tweaked and you'll be much happier. Also there's a small amp that can be put inside the radio, but you lose the speaker, so you need an external.
Not haywire. It goes into SWR mode. You are seeing his SWR change with his output. Notice it starts at 1.75 (which is pretty high since you want it at 1.0:1 but under 2.0/1 is acceptable) in silence and to 4.0 when he hammers the audio out. Almost all CBs do it.
I have a 980 why do they all get hot after running them a few hours bare foot nothing every done to the radio I only get good reports I'm on an a 99 28 ft in the air swrs are 100 around the band
@@leonlove9605 the 980 doesn't have any heat sinc.....the frame of the radio dissipates the heat. It's not adaquite enough to keep the radio cool during long qso's
None of my radios do that.....even running 1k......cb radios nor my hf radios. Check the antenna, coax, connectors, jumpers. My cobra 2000 jumps from 1.1 to 1.3 max at 1k........idk.......

Power mics work fine, as usual on any radio, not set too high,

why is the receive meter scale not working
So yeah I really wanna get a 989ssb but I've heard there horrible to tune.. I was hoping for 25-35 watts and a good rf end...
They tune just fine, I've had mine since 2012 with a 100 watt amp and it kicks ass
980 is a great radio!..lotta people foolishly underestimate it.

He has it on the swr meter. Also his swr is way too high.

You're not putting out enough power to be heard.

I have the same radio. Im in Florida and have heard people in LA, and MI. They definitely cant hear me

I got 20 am on my 25 ssb how no clue got it in a trade guy said snake radio did the work on it
Mine must have some good audio cause I keep getting told the stock mic sounds better then the power mic
