      As a political term, Tory was an insult (derived from the Middle Irish word tóraidhe, meaning "outlaw", "robber", since outlaws,! Robbing the poor, for tax cuts for the rich! (Striped military!) Substandard serviced, Post Office? 😮

    while reforms vote share looks impressively close to their national polling, you have to take into consideration that national polls average out across all constituencies. So there will be some places where no one votes reform, some places where lots of people vote reform, and the average ends up around 10%. That means that in leave voting, rural, traditionally conservative, low diversity areas you would expect reform to achieve vote shares well above 10%, in the region of 15%+, just as in diverse remain voting inner cities you'd expect them to get votes in the low single digit percents. So the fact they only got around their national average in by elections in comfortable seats for them doesn't actually suggest they are doing all that well. If in the general election they get 13% of the vote share in all leave voting areas, and they get close to nothing in the other half of the country, their national vote share will not reach 10%

    What's most interesting is the raw voting numbers compared with 2019. It seems Labour didn't actually gain new votes (indeed they had fewer voters), but that many 2019 Tory voters just stayed home rather than vote for anyone. This sort of ebb and flow is really good for everyone. If you enjoy moderate politics, then this is good for you, even if you're conservative. The reason being is that the longer a party is in power, the more extreme their policies start to become, so by losing, the moderates usually win over.

    bristol resident here! kingswood is a really interesting constituency as it’s incredibly suburban and could indicate mood across a lot of outer city suburbs. most of the coverage hasn’t highlighted the fact that kingswood is effectively an outer suburb of bristol. the fact it’s in south glos is very much a technicality of brown belt development, and there’s no dividing line between bristol and south glos (pictures of the border cutting between random streets in bristol are quite comical). lots of the country is made up of people who live in outer suburbs and commuter towns for large urban centres. the urban centres overwhelmingly go labour, but if labour are also catching the outer suburbs (which often are more likely to swing), this is very interesting and indicative of the polling that indicates a tory wipeout.

      I live in the kingswood constituency and voted labour on Thursday. Agree with a lot of this and can also add that it's a very varied place, with half of the consitituency being low income and the other half being the epitome of 'white suburban middle/upper middle class' (in places like Emersons Green where I live for example). It will be interesting to see what happens when this seat no longer exists and we're split in half, the more traditionally higher income neighbourhoods are going into filton and bradley stoke (also currently tory) and I believe kingswood itself is going into a new Bristol East seat???? Writing seems on the wall now for the tories anyway!

    📝 Summary of Key Points:
    📌 The UK held two byelections in Wellingborough and Kingswood, resulting in historic Labour victories, posing challenges for the Tories and Rishi Sunak.
    🧐 Wellingborough's byelection was triggered by a sexual misconduct investigation into former Tory MP Peter Bone, while Kingswood's byelection was caused by Conservative MP Chris Skidmore's resignation over environmental concerns.
    💡 Additional Insights and Observations:
    💬 The significant swings towards Labour in both constituencies, especially in Wellingborough, indicate a shift in voter sentiment.
    📊 The decline in Tory vote share and the rise of Reform UK's support in both byelections highlight challenges for the Conservatives.
    🌐 The impact of these byelections on party unity and the upcoming general election is substantial, with implications for both Labour and the Tories.
    📣 Concluding Remarks:
    The recent byelections in Wellingborough and Kingswood have delivered significant victories for Labour, signaling potential trouble for the Tories and Rishi Sunak. The swings in voter support, coupled with the rise of Reform UK, underscore the shifting political landscape in the UK, setting the stage for a challenging general election ahead.

    Reform should have done better as smaller parties do better in by elections than general elections and they had a candidate in Wellingborough with a degree of name recognition whilst being able to focus more resources in two particular seats. They needed to considerably out perform their polling to make it believable

    At 4:00 you say this represents a 37.6% decline in vote share for the tories
    This is incorrect, it's a 37.6% percentage POINTS decrease, which is different, and in this case represents far, far more than a 37.6% decrease - on the graph it appears to be more like a ~60% decrease
    Maybe get back on those stats courses on skillshare?

    I feel kinda bad for Rishi he's trying to clean up a huge messed caused liz truss who destroyed all trust in Tories and their government in matter of few weeks. But some blame can put on Rishi himself he hasn't turned out the small boats, he hasn't passed any bills that would help the economy and slow down growth and cancelling high speed rail projects is a bad look on him.

    • @pauln6803
      @pauln6803 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Well my own opinion is that it's too soon for both the EU and UK to work on an official treaty.
      From the EU's part they'll want to see support from both main parties, and with Reform (or rather the money behind Reform) still influencing the Tories from the back seat...
      The British political landscape needs more coherence, and that cohesion applies just as much to the general public as much as it does within both European and British political spheres.
      And let's not forget that any one of the EU 27 can veto our entry - even the problem children such as Hungary.
      I've no doubt Starmer will be attempting to gain further agreements with the EU and even Sunak surprised many by ignoring the swivel eyed loonies on Northern Ireland, so the EU aren't entirely inflexible when it comes to dealing with post Brexit arrangements.
      As to what can be gained outside the existing trade and cooperation agreement, I don't know.
      Starmer says he is ruling out both the single market and any customs union during his leadership, but it's not as if Starmer hasn't been known to perform the odd U-turn!
      I'd love to start buying and selling friction free with Europe again, but I think it's going to be a decade before both political and public will drive us together.

      It's worth considering that, even if we aren't interested in the economic side of things, we might need to consider alternative defence co-operation arrangements if Trump wins. NATO was already a very cobbled-together beast before Trump outright said he'd alter the terms of Article 4, and it is increasingly looking like even if he doesn't get into power this year policy in the US is becoming increasingly isolationist, at least on the right, so closer ties to Europe are looking like a gradual inevitability.

    • @jonathanbowers8964
      @jonathanbowers8964 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      To be honest the EU isnt likely to let the UK back in for a at least a decade or two. What Starmer could negotiate is joining the EFTA to get better trade access at the expense of "sovereignty" and whatever demands individual countries want to make of the UK. In regards to EFTA, that would at the very least mean giving huge concessions on fishing and oil rights to Iceland and Norway. It is also likely that key EU states will have specific demands (Ireland might ask for Rockall, Hungary might ask for extortion money, Poland might ask for more tanks). While I think that sacrificing the fishing industry is a small price to pay for EFTA membership, it will be a bit of a tough sell in some marginal ridings.
