NFL Films was in its golden age during the 80s and 90s with Facenda and Kalas narrating. The NFL Network has RUINED NFL Films by only making Stupid "Top 100" Countdowns and "A Football Life" Talkumentaries. No more Team Yearbooks, NFL Game of the Weeks, and the Super Bowl Recaps are garbage now with hardly any narration, bland scoring, and ZERO wit or charm in presenting nuggets of interest about the teams and players. I almost couldn't stay awake with the God Awful recap of the Chiefs/ Niners Superbowl LIV. BORING!
I so remember this game. It was my birthday and I was 10. Got Missile Command for my Atari 2600 as a gift. Oh yeah, the Niners winning was my icing! Thanks for the memories!!
I'm not a fan of either the 49ers or Bengals. But out of all the Super Bowl highlight films that I've seen, this is really my favorite. It sets the scene perfectly with the shots of people braving the Arctic temperature to get to the game. It also might be the last Super Bowl highlight film that was narrated by the great John Facenda. He died in 1984. This is pretty much a perfect highlight film and I advise everyone to enjoy it before the TH-cam police or somebody else has it removed.
+James McKeon While this was not the last Super Bowl highlight film narrated by John Facenda, the final work he did for NFL Films ended up being the official highlight film of Super Bowl XVIII a couple years later, though he also narrated most of "Superstars of the Super Bowl", which wasn't released until 1986, two years after his death.
Of all the 49er superbowl teams, this one is the most special to me because of all the struggles the team had all those years before. This team is very underrated when it comes to great teams of the past also
and as a Rams fan this was the most painful....after being one of the most competitive teams in the NFL for 8 consecutive years, and dominating the NFC West and the Niners , we got no Lombardy's to show for it..then you guys come out of nowhere after sucking for almost a decade and do something L.A couldn't...
I remember the next year in the '82 season when the 49ers didn't do well, I heard people say the Niners were just a cinderella team and that they wouldn't amount to anything after the '81 season. Well, they were back in the NFC Championship in '83 and then winning it all in '84!
another interesting and quirky fact...this was the 3rd consecutive super bowl in which a particular state ( California) sent 3 different teams to the super bowl...Rams 1979, Raiders 80, 49ers 81...
As a fan of NFL Films and all they did to present the NFL this way, this was the pinnacle of their Super Bowl highlights. They aren't the same without John Facenda anymore. Add to that the musical selections, this one is hard to beat!
Fascenda & the music is what drew me in. The SB highlights were always my favorite NFL Films videos. The ones from 1977-86 were all great, grew up on those.
I completely agree. The music and narration of this film is SO dramatic! I also enjoy the musi and narration of SB's V and IX. I attended this Super Bowl and sat in the end zone seats where that damned goal line stand occurred. I also attended the Bengals Super Bowl in Miami. Bittersweet. Still glad I got to attend the events. They were big time, world wide amazing spectacles!
You sound like a REAL Bengals fan. Do the Bengals still have that announcer that screams and yells "Oh Yeah!" every time they do something good? Always thought that guy was a joke.
This was the first of 3 consecutive Super Bowls that featured a crucial 4th and 1. All 3 times, the team that won the 4th and 1 (stops in SB 16 and 18, a TD in SB 17) went on to win the game.
The 1981 49ers may be one of the most overlooked Super Bowl champions in Super Bowl history. One thing I just saw was that the 49ers beat all three of their post-season opponents twice, once in the regular season and once in the post-season. Not only did they crush the Cowboys when they met during the season, but late in the season, they beat the Giants and Bengals in back-to-back games, and only the Giants really threatened them. They beat the Cowboys (45-14) and Bengals (21-3), the teams they beat in the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl XVI, respectively, by a combined score of 66-17 in the regular season.
As a Giants fan, I admit the 49ers ran the 1980's! They deserve more rings than they won. Had 1987 been a full season they would've won and if they kept Montana instead of Young, they would've beaten some of those early 90's Bills teams for SuperBowls too.
I'm not sure about that regarding the '87 49ers, because they were the NFL's best team, but ran into Anthony Carter and the Vikings in the playoffs in their 36-24 loss, so that may very well have happened anyway. Carter torched the 49ers' secondary for over 230 yards in that game. And by the way, the 49ers made the right decision to trade Montana and keep Steve Young, because that bought them an extra five or six years at the top. Montana might have beaten the Cowboys in '92, but there's no way he would have beaten them in '93, by which time, the 49ers might have been a team without a quality QB had they let Young go, instead of Montana.
+cjs83172 damn, you know your football and I admit I'm a bit of a Montana fanboy. Come to think about it, he wasn't the same after that NFC Championship in 1990. He didn't start again until late in the 1992 season.
In fact, after that injury, he NEVER started another game for the 49ers. The only time he got into a game was the 1992 regular season MNF finale vs. the Lions, where he led the 49ers to two TD drives after taking over for Steve Young. The next time Montana started a game was in 1993 as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs. A year after that, which would be Montana's last, the 49ers went into Kansas City and Montana dealt his ex-team one of only two losses they would suffer that year (an embarrassing 40-8 home loss to the Eagles would be the other one). And that might have been the one time that 49er fans watched their team on TV and wanted them to LOSE, just to watch Montana, in their minds, stick it to 49er management.
Both the '81 and '84 49ers teams get woefully overlooked. They were a TEAM in every sense of the word, and didn't have a lot of big flashy media names. So many great players from those early 80s Niners (Eric Wright, Dwight Hicks, Carlton Williamson, Hacksaw Reynolds, Freddie Solomon, Wendell Tyler, etc) get way underrated. People always talk about the late 80s Niners with Rice and Taylor and Haley and co....but the early 80s Niners were outstanding, and beat some hard nosed teams to win
the thumbnail for this video is Keena Turner... he was on Bill Walsh's coaching staff at Stanford when I was coaching there in the early 90's. I was in a staff pickup basketball game with him, and was going for a rebound he came down with. He spun around and his tricep hit me right in the nose.. I was out cold. Not sure he even noticed I had been there..... GREAT guy, he never stopped apologizing....
+Thomas Norman I don't think the goal line stand was a big deal. The 49ers still had to punt and the Bengals scored a touchdown on the next drive. The real game killer was the 49ers field goal drive after that. That put the Bengals in a situation where they had to score twice late in the game. So they were forced to pass and the 49ers defense was ready for it.
During the intro, a radio host was giving a weather report. There’s something about old radio that I just love to hear. Has a different sound quality to it.
This game felt more like Cincinnati losing it than San Francisco winning it since the Bengals victimized themselves time after time with their own mistakes. In SB XXIII, the 49ers simply rose up late in the 4th quarter to win it with that long drive.
It's funny they call it the "Detroit Silverdome." It was actually the Pontiac Silverdome, and as such, the game was played in Pontiac, Michigan, 31 miles up I-75 from Detroit.
It's just like or even worse how they call the Jets & Giants NY when they play in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Or they used to call the Arizona Cardinals "Phoenix" when they played in Tempe, Azr. I think its a case of calling a team by the biggest city closest to that team, not technically where they officially call home.
19:16 When I saw Bobby Kemp not able to get up after that hit (a clean block) by John Ayers, I Googled his name on the hunch that he might be one of the head trauma casualties of football. Sure enough.
As a Bengals fan, this just breaks my heart to watch. The Bengals had so many chances to take control of this game, but they just kept losing the ball. I have no doubt that Ken Anderson would be in the Hall of Fame today if Cincinnati had won this game. It's still absurd that he's not in, while someone like Dan Fouts (who threw 252 interceptions and never even played in a Super Bowl) is. Also, it's absurd that Dan Ross didn't win the MVP of this game. Even though his team lost, he clearly deserved the award: 11 receptions for 104 yards and two touchdowns. To this day his 104 yards is a receiving record for a tight end in a Super Bowl (thought it was tied by Vernon Davis)
TheStapleGunKid They had a golden opportunity to take the first lead of the game after they recovered the ball on the kickoff return. But Anderson threw the interception. That goal line stand was the real killer though.
+TheStapleGun Neither is Jim Plunkett and he WON 2 Super Bowls for the Raiders. Not only that but, Jim Plunkett is the last Raiders QB to win a Super Bowl. He's also the only QB who has WON 2 or more Super Bowls who ISN'T IN THE HALL OF FAME...
Plunkett led the Raiders to victory in some great games, but I don't think he's hall of fame material. His td-int ration is pathetic: 164 touchdown passes vs 198 interceptions. Even for his time that's pretty bad. Also he only threw for 25,882 yards. In a 16-year career, that averages out to about 1,600 yards per season. No way you're getting into the hall of fame with that. Plunkett had a very inconsistent career overall. There were just few key seasons where he rose to the top and led the Raiders to glory.
+TheStapleGunKid hey the Bengals are doing great now, so maybe 2015 will be their year. I agree with you on Anderson, he certainly belongs in the HOF. Fouts had some good moments but as you say, too many interceptions, plus he was injury plagued.
The Bengals had the ball for three consecutive plays just one yard shy (or less) of the goal line. Why they didn't try a quarterback sneak even once is beyond me.
Pete Johnson was a big dude. I too would've picked him to run a draw easily for a score. Sadly for the Bengals, it didn't turn out the way they wanted.
This game was there for the Bengals to take. A shame they didn't win it, because if they had, those great Bengals teams of the late 70s and early 80s would get the credit they deserve. And players like Kenny Anderson and Ken Riley would be in the Hall of Fame where they belong. Several of the key 49ers defensive players of the early 80s (Eric Wright, Dwight Hicks, Keena Turner, etc) get totally forgotten. San Francisco's defense becoming outstanding in 1981 was the key to the team's turnaround in the early 80s...which of course led to their championships throughout the decade
The 49ers under walsh tried to win games without getting dirty. Once a team got rough on them they folded there tent. The NY Giants did it often enough
francis salles fuck the Giants the 49ers beat the giant ass a lot of times 1981twice regular season and playoffs,1984 twice regular season and playoffs,1987,1988,1989,1990 7-3 regular season game, 1993 LT crying on the sidelines and Phil Simms last playoff game in the league gtfo fuck the Giants.
Joe Montana was 4-0 in Super Bowls and this game was the only Super Bowl that wasn’t a blowout! Joe Montana has the highest QBR in Super Bowl history and he won 3 MVP’S! He the 2nd greatest QB of all time!
I was only 6 when this game was played but, I remember this game so clearly. Joe Montana scored the 49ers first TD on a 1-yard sneak. I also remember the 49ers goal line stand late in the 3rd quarter. Also remember this because of the late, great John Facenda. A truly amazing voice.
+David Lajon Glad they played in an inside stadium as I remember them saying it was 24 out that day. What I didn't remember was there was a wind chill that day.
+Mark Muffs Hey, I forgot that the wind chill was -25! Not conducive to a game plan that was predicated on a controlled passing game. Of course, I actually didn't remember the wind chill because I had only turned 6 2 and a half months before the game
3rd year in a row the state of California sent a team to the big game...Rams 79-80, Raiders 80-81, Niners 81-82....first and only time that's ever happened...
Dan Bunz made a great tackle but. Ken Anderson threw the ball where Charles Alexander had to turn for the ball. Had Anderson threw the ball ahead of Charles then it's a touchdown.
I have heard rumors that the Bengals "Management" at the time did not pick Bill Walsh for the Head Coaching Job In the 70's, And then gave negative recommendations to every coaching Job that Bill Walsh had leading up to His time at the 49ers....I maybe wrong about this, But I am typing this because I am Just curious about this "Rumor". About this game, To me, This was a case of the 49ers Coaches(led by Walsh of course....), Out coaching the Bengals Coaches, It was that simple....
In "A Football Life" profiling Bill Walsh on NFL Network, Walsh confirmed in his autobiography that Bengals owner Paul Brown put out the bad word on him.
@@JAWrightonline If this is true....Then WOW.... 😲 This puts SB 16 In a new light....As say, "The Curse of Bill Walsh"....In the game, The 49ers were able to pick up points off mistakes by the Bengals, The Interception early in the 1st half, Then the kickoff return fumble at the end of the 1st half. These and other mistakes by the Bengals were a reflection of bad coaching, The 49ers play In SB 16 was a reflection of the great coaching of Bill Walsh....In the end, Walsh was able to get "Revenge", Not just In SB 16 against the Bengals, But again In SB 23 against the same Bengals....
I felt every bit of that wind walking to the Silverdome in the parking lot. CCCCOOOLDD! And I sat through the Freezer Bowl 2 weeks before that in Cincinnati. -59 degrees below wind chill.-9 degrees temperature. Still the coldest game in NFL history by wind chill.
@@22_cincatt It's been used in other programs in TV, not just in NFL films too. Actually several of the music in this video was used in The World Tomorrow broadcast in TV. It was The Church of God weekly program every Saturday.
this game is still hard to get over as a Bengals fan my parents were there it was a case of the Bengals what killed them early really killed them late the turnovers not scoring on the goal line etc I think the Bengals win it one day just hope I'm around to see it!!!
During the 3rd quarter goal line stand segment John Facenda claimed that David Verser was supposed to have blocked Craig Puki when Kenny Anderson called the blocking audible. According to the Sports Illustrated article on Super Bowl XVI, Verser was supposed to have blocked Jack Reynolds, not Craig Puki.
When Kenny Anderson was talking to Cris Collinsworth on the sideline at 11:54, did anybody understand what the hell he was talking about? I sure as hell didn't.
Yes he was talking about a play where if Collinsworth positioned on the outside he would cut off the route & go into the middle of the field by doing that he was allowing a Linebacker to suddenly cover him cause that's where Linebackers tend to be. By Anderson saying break it he's saying keep running up the field don't let yourself get covered by a 2nd defender.
+Bhutt Hert After the way the season ended for your team, I definitely don't envy you for being a Bengals fan. That game was a disgrace. By the way, the guy that does the radio broadcasts for your team is just about the biggest homer I've ever heard. Dave Lapham, right? Holy crap! If I was a Bengals fan I'd be embarrassed to have him as one of the announcers for my team. When I heard his call of that playoff game against the Steelers on the NFL Network highlight video I just about burst out laughing. When the Bengals scored the TD to make to take the lead he was like "YEAH! YEAH! YEAH! WHOOOOOO! WHOOOOOOOO!" And then when Burfict hit Antonio Brown with that cheap shot he was all "VONTEZ! VONTEZ!" My God, what a homer.
15:36...qb sneak was needed with to back behind the QB...forward progress would've been giving a 80% push by 1 or 2 backs...another miss opportunity with favored the 49ers to their 1st ring....classic battle by 2 ball clubs who suffered over 2 decades...
John Facenda, in mentioning the "team that scored first wins the game", may have referred to the Dallas Cowboys scoring first in Super Bowl V, and again in Super Bowl X (and at the same stadium!), but would lose both of those games--in the fourth quarter each time! (In Super Bowl 5, Dallas was ahead of Baltimore in the fourth period 13-6 but lost 16-13. And in Super Bowl 10, against Terry Bradshaw's Pittsburgh Steelers, they led 10-7, and ended up losing 21-17.
Very strange game. The Bengals outgained the 49ers substantially; yet were behind 20-0 at one point. They were getting blown out - but not really. If only they had kicked a FG on 4th down at the one yard line, it could have been 20-10 with the whole 4th quarter to go. Four turnovers were the killer; or the Bengals could have blown out the 49ers badly. Again, very strange game.
When I look something up, why the 'F' can't find exactly what I'm looking for? For instance, I looked up Super bowl XVI, and the first results were from OTHER years.
Had the Bengals came back and won do you believe the 49ers still would come back to win another Super Bowl or multiple Super Bowls ? Or do you think they would have flamed out and been looked at as an afterthought in NFL history?

This is how my 49er empire built up😀
6:04 "Now here's a guy that needed to hang onto the football!"
Why Collinsworth has always hated us. :)
The Bengals had the ball for three consecutive plays just one yard shy (or less) of the goal line. Why they didn't try a quarterback sneak even once is beyond me.
Well, at least they RAN THE BALL, something Seattle didn't
+CJ Bourne I Agree On That and They Had Some Shots To Win This Game If Not For The INT's Including The Goal Line Stand By The 49ers!
+Vince Niederman if, if, if, if, if,
The 49ers under walsh tried to win games without getting dirty. Once a team got rough on them they folded there tent. The NY Giants did it often enough
francis salles Yup!
francis salles fuck the Giants the 49ers beat the giant ass a lot of times 1981twice regular season and playoffs,1984 twice regular season and playoffs,1987,1988,1989,1990 7-3 regular season game, 1993 LT crying on the sidelines and Phil Simms last playoff game in the league gtfo fuck the Giants.
this would be the 3rd consecutive Super bowl a California based team went to the SB..Rams -79, Raiders-80, 49ers-81
awesome music with this SB replay
Joe Montana was 4-0 in Super Bowls and this game was the only Super Bowl that wasn’t a blowout! Joe Montana has the highest QBR in Super Bowl history and he won 3 MVP’S! He the 2nd greatest QB of all time!
Neither was Super Bowl XXIII 7 years later.
@Playstation Gamer Jo Lui The sound keeps cutting out around the 3:26 mark of the video. Can you re-upload this with the sound fixed? Thanks!
who knew Joe Montana's first super bowl TD was him diving in the endzone
fab kam head first
I knew; I was at the game.
the guy who knows also knows that Brett Farve's first pass completion. Was to himself.
"World Champion San Francisco 49ers"!!!!!!!!
So great a team.
So many memories.
R.I.P. Dad!! 49er forever!!!
Dan Bunz teaches P.E. at my school
Tom C the hero of the game
Was in the movie north Dallas forty too
@ 14:48 those guys look amazing---bad ass! Ronnie Lott was one bad dude!
6:05 Lynn Thomas #28 only played 2 seasons with the 49ers then he played two years with the Oakland Invaders in the USFL. He died 2 years ago at 61.
3rd year in a row the state of California sent a team to the big game...Rams 79-80, Raiders 80-81, Niners 81-82....first and only time that's ever happened...
Montana and the 49ers first super bowl.
49ers dynasty started.
That NFL music is classic
Me & my uncle's team the 49ers & Joe Montana his favorite. I like film studies in sports.
Dan Bunz made a great tackle but. Ken Anderson threw the ball where Charles Alexander had to turn for the ball. Had Anderson threw the ball ahead of Charles then it's a touchdown.
Interesting fact about this game. The 49ers are the only team in NFL history to be put out scored in touchdowns in a SB game and still win the game.
The music cuts off at around 8:39.....
This puts SB 16 In a new light....As say, "The Curse of Bill Walsh"....In the game, The 49ers were able to pick up points off mistakes by the Bengals, The Interception early in the 1st half, Then the kickoff return fumble at the end of the 1st half.
Not scoring after the fumble on the opening kickoff just killed Cincy. I knew it was not going to be the Bengals day.
14:27... that's my PE teacher!!
Craig Puki?
What’s up with the audio cutting out? Why would you share this?
I love that trumpet at 0:32 while the XVI flag is blowing!
I love it too.
The song is "American Skyline" .You can find the entire song on TH-cam. Go to Dave Volsky's TH-cam channel.
@@22_cincatt It's been used in other programs in TV, not just in NFL films too. Actually several of the music in this video was used in The World Tomorrow broadcast in TV. It was The Church of God weekly program every Saturday.
So why is this the only Super Bowl I can't seem to find the original broadcast on TH-cam?
madmanszalinski I've found the second half by searching "1982 super bowl XVI. Great sound on the broadcasting. John & Pat.
Why did this video lose sound a couple times?
Man it sucks bengals couldnt score on first and goal from 3
Yeah They Had 4 Shots at It!
Vince Niederman yep
Jamming on that touchdown drive.
Go Bengals! We Dem Cats!
this game is still hard to get over as a Bengals fan my parents were there it was a case of the Bengals what killed them early really killed them late the turnovers not scoring on the goal line etc I think the Bengals win it one day just hope I'm around to see it!!!
Silverdome!
Perfect Sense I miss it
Perfect Sense looks like such a cool venue
40 years ago 1-24-82 1-24-22. Possible Bengals and 49ers meet Super Bowl LVI
And this was the first Super Bowl played in a northern city, a stadium with a roof was definitely needed
Had the Bengals get a chance to replay in the Frigid temperature, they would have easily won SB 16.
Can someone please tell me where can I find the music that starts playing @6:35
Robert Patterson - Strings in Bondage

14:06 that was 1st of 2 missed blocks
I don’t know why but I desperately want an update on the “Super Bowl hats here” guy. What’s he up to now??
When Kenny Anderson was talking to Cris Collinsworth on the sideline at 11:54, did anybody understand what the hell he was talking about? I sure as hell didn't.
Yes he was talking about a play where if Collinsworth positioned on the outside he would cut off the route & go into the middle of the field by doing that he was allowing a Linebacker to suddenly cover him cause that's where Linebackers tend to be. By Anderson saying break it he's saying keep running up the field don't let yourself get covered by a 2nd defender.
7:53 i hope kyle sees this before the sb
Pontiac silver dome super bowl 🏈
What happened to the sound ?
Start of the 49ers dynasty.
Montana is the greatest legend ever.
They got there because of Dwight Clark ( RIP)
The greatest offense in history, gave them Fred Dean. The owner of the dumb team thought they didn't need him too much.
What if Cincinnati won that superbowl? But the 49ers deserved it. I don't care what anyone thinks, I'm proud of being a Bengals fan!
+Bhutt Hert Are you a Burfict fan?
That's a tough one. But, not really.
Bhutt Hert
Lose Marvin Lewis, Burfict, and Pac-Man Jones and the Bengals will truly roar!!!
We should have fired Marvin Lewis and moved Hue Jackson up to head coach. But it's too late because Hue went to Cleveland.
15:09...TE has the whole far side of the field to himself...and TE2 underneath...15:11...both wide open...
The goal line stand for the ages
Yeah, how can you not get in with three shots from the one, especially with a running back that weighed way over 250?
15:36...qb sneak was needed with to back behind the QB...forward progress would've been giving a 80% push by 1 or 2 backs...another miss opportunity with favored the 49ers to their 1st ring....classic battle by 2 ball clubs who suffered over 2 decades...
I wish the sound didn’t go in and out
19:35....#46 is wide open in the flat...
12:42 the quote of the film
too bad the sound keeps cutting out
To the 515 people who like this video: do you not care that the audio keeps cutting out? What the heck is going on?
I wish all Super Bowls kicked off in the outdoor daylight sunshine and were played on natural green grass.
16:12...rb didn't cut to the outside...dam
John Facenda, in mentioning the "team that scored first wins the game", may have referred to the Dallas Cowboys scoring first in Super Bowl V, and again in Super Bowl X (and at the same stadium!), but would lose both of those games--in the fourth quarter each time! (In Super Bowl 5, Dallas was ahead of Baltimore in the fourth period 13-6 but lost 16-13. And in Super Bowl 10, against Terry Bradshaw's Pittsburgh Steelers, they led 10-7, and ended up losing 21-17.
I love the statement NFL films makes at the open - don't play the Super Bowl in cold weather cities.
From 1978 and 1979 ( 2-14) 1980 ( 6-10) and 1981 ( 13-3 and Super Bowl Champions)
RIP Pontiac Silverdome
Super bowl 16--- Montana
When I look something up, why the 'F' can't find exactly what I'm looking for? For instance, I looked up Super bowl XVI, and the first results were from OTHER years.
John Facenda: The voice of God
The Bengals Should Had Won This SB If Not For The Mistakes They Made During The Whole Game The Goal Line Plays By The Bengals Was Bad Play Calling!
RIP Silverdome
Had the Bengals came back and won do you believe the 49ers still would come back to win another Super Bowl or multiple Super Bowls ? Or do you think they would have flamed out and been looked at as an afterthought in NFL history?
@Steven Kunzer Your Right If The Bengals Had Won People Would Had Been Looking at The 49ers Very Different in The 80's!
Well, the Bengals didn't come back, so get over it.
UH! they did win 4 Super Bowls in the decade and they still would have regardless if the Bengals won this game Duh!
