Hey I saw your piece on reddit and wanted to give some feedback on it, but didn't want to do it in the thread as that would be unrelated to the discussion. I do like the texture of the intro in the first movement, it felt really full and minimalist and I liked it. I think the 4 against 3 polyrhythm really set it apart, I was hoping you'd explore that more in the flute solo spots, but those felt a little plain. without that personally. The second movement is nice, I like how it sounds, but it lacks any challenge in the flute part. The slow movement in a concerto should still be difficult to play. And it lacked any forward motion. Now it doesn't have to have as much momentum or drive as a faster movement, but it needed some eighth notes or triplet accompaniment at some point. Maybe when the melody repeated, it could've been played by the strings or horn while the flute does some fast arpeggios? The third movement is a little too similar to the first for my ear as Rich said. You can do a quick call back to the first movement, but I think it should've gone somewhere else immediately after that. Maybe that's when the switch to major should've occurred. And the ending felt a little abrupt to me personally. But the good thing about this piece is that it shows a very advanced knowledge of orchestration and you've made some smart decisions in that regard that really help out the piece. I think you could've reduced the instrumentation a little though. Bass clarinet and contrabassoon aren't really necessary in this piece I don't think. And perhaps the picc and english horn can be played by someone already playing flute and oboe? You would have to make some changes but if a real orchestra were to play this, they might request these things and you'll have to sacrifice some of this. And on the title card it says the duration is 32 minutes when the piece is only 14, was it intended to be longer? Hope this helps!

I appreciate the feedback! This is my first time writing a concerto, so I never wanted to get the solo part perfect. Thanks for the compliment about the orchestration - I orchestrated a few existing pieces before I ever started composing my first original orchestral work. And yes, I copied and pasted the title card from another work, and I guess I forgot to change the duration.
