3 Quarter-tone Pieces for Trombone, Op. 21 (2024)
I recently felt the desire to experiment with quarter-tone or 24-EDO music, and this is the result. The first piece uses quarter tones mainly as passing or chromatic notes, and bears the closest resemblance to music in "normal" 12-tone equal temperament. The second takes a Schoenberg-style 24-tone row and constructs a series of short variations on the 5-bar theme. The last piece is a waltz in rondo form, with each recurrence of the main theme in contrasting tonalities - subminor, neutral, and supermajor.

Big Tony's Fish Sermon (jazz arrangement of Mahler Symphony 2)
มุมมอง 100วันที่ผ่านมา
Gustav Mahler's second symphony is an enormous 80-minute long symphony scored for a huge orchestra. Here, I have distilled it into a short jazz tune mainly based on the third movement. After a series of short themes from the scherzo come motifs from the beginning of the symphony and the closing chorale. Then, a slower jazz waltz gives way to a recapitulation of the introductory themes. The titl...
String Quartet No. 3 "The Passion" (with vocalist and percussion), Op. 20 (2024)
มุมมอง 323 หลายเดือนก่อน
My third string quartet follows the story of the Passion of Jesus, from the hours immediately following the Last Supper, to his crucifixion and resurrection as descriped in the four gospels. Musically, the piece is in two parts. The first part more or less adheres to a typical Classical structure: a movement in sonata form (although the recapitulation is truncated), a fast movement, and a slow ...

“The Black Paintings (Spanish: Pinturas negras) is the name given to a group of 14 paintings by Francisco Goya from the later years of his life, likely between 1819 and 1823. They portray intense, haunting themes, reflective of both his fear of insanity and his bleak outlook on humanity. In 1819, at the age of 72, Goya moved into a two-story house outside Madrid that was called Quinta del Sordo...

I started writing this piece back in April after finishing my first solo trombone suite. I had been reading Frankenstein and Tolkien's Silmarillion and listening to Mahler, and had on my mind decline, decay, and darkness. This piece went through countless edits, a few large-scale revisions, and lots of trying things out on my own trombone. I think at this point, it's easily my best and most mat...
Modal Variations on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Op. 17 (2023)

A set of variations on Thomas Tallis' theme "Why fum'th in sight", each in a different mode of the major scale. Also based on the piece "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis" by Ralph Vaughan Williams. This composition owes a lot to the Renaissance period, from the theme to the use of modes to the orchestration (which includes instruments such as acoustic guitar, tambourine, and tenor recorder)...

One-Minute Mozart, a Seriously Small Symphony (2023)
มุมมอง 36ปีที่แล้ว
I thought it would be a fun challenge to write an entire Classical symphony in the space of one minute. This piece follows the usual Classical four-movement form, although I had to cut just a couple of sections, such as the recapitulation of the second theme in the first movement, and the trio of the third movement. But aside from that, I think my endeavor was successful; if the tempo markings ...
Suite No. 1 for Solo Trombone, Op. 15 (2023)

For a long time, I have wanted to write something for myself to play on trombone. I finally found some inspiration in the form of Cosimo Carovani’s suite “ad Antiqua” for solo cello, and a few similarities can be found between the two pieces, especially in the use of plainsong-inspired melodies. Additionally, like many compositions featuring a usually monophonic instrument (e.g. Bach cello suit...

Monday night I was idly playing the keyboard in my apartment, and started to play a melody under a simple I-iv progression. I really liked how it sounded so I recorded myself playing it (here's the link: th-cam.com/video/2V8s6gUbXq4/w-d-xo.html), and turned it into a full-length orchestral piece in less than 48 hours. It's definitely a pretty simple piece, but I'm happy with how it turned out.

    Have you thought about writing quarter tone pieces for multiple trombones? I think there is a lot of potential there, but I have very little experience composing. I love the sound of microtonal chorales though and would love to try playing one

      Thanks for the comment! That definitely sounds like a cool idea. The problem arises with chords containing both "regular" notes and quarter-tones - they're really hard to get in tune. Think about how hard it can be to get just the right spot for 5th position, then consider how difficult it would be to play a note in 5.5 position while trying to tune an unfamiliar interval. I might try something like that to get experience with 24-TET chords; I don't know if I would try another tuning system because I wouldn't know where to start - I can't use them in Dorico and frankly I don't think they sound that good. But I think it's great that technology has recently allowed us to explore tuning systems that were, even 20 years ago, mostly theoretical. Even if you don't have experience composing, I would definitely give it a shot if it's something that interests you. Just start fooling around and you might come up with something good or at least interesting, and you'll probably have fun along the way! If you write anything, send it over to me and I'll give it a listen.

    Beautiful! I was in the first choir to ever sing this piece anywhere! Carl Nygard was my high school choral director! In 1992, my senior year, we sang this in competition!! Mr Nygard gave us hand written music sheets because it hadn’t even been published yet! This psalm had already long been my favorite and a family favorite. About a month before our senior band/choral out of state competition trip my grandfather became very ill. He then passed away only days before the trip. His funeral was scheduled for the day of the main concert in the middle of the trip. My family all told me to go on the trip anyway and that my grandfather would have wanted me to go and not miss the trip for his funeral. I was torn. But listened to my family. It was very hard though to still go knowing I’d miss the funeral. As it turned out the funeral service was held at almost the exact same time as our performance. Before I left I asked if they could please recite psalm 23 at the funeral as my contribution to the service. So it ended up that at literally almost the exact moment we were singing it in competition on stage in Boston,MA they were reading it at my grandfathers funeral in Pennsylvania. I had tears streaming down my face the whole song. We were a powerful chorus very well led by Mr. Nygard and a large group of well over 200. We ended up taking first place in that category and multiple others in that large national competition. My Nygard, this piece, that performance, and trip will always mean the world to me. And you have captured it beautifully in this instrumental version! Thank you for sharing it!!

    NotePerformer is great, but the mockups aren't perfect. This is especially true when it comes to multiphonics and other extended techniques. Consequently, the audio of this video is not a perfect (nor even very close) representation of what the piece would actually sound like when played by a real person. I'm hoping to get this piece recorded soon, but it's a bit beyond my skill level and I'll have to get someone else to play it. I just wanted to get this video out there, and when and if I get an actual recording I'll upload it to my channel. Enjoy!

    I am curious what you use for sounds for your compositions, is it what's built into the notation program or separately programmed via midi and rendered from samples?

    • @bmjessep
      @bmjessep ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a sound add-on called NotePerformer. It uses AI for phrasing. I'd definitely recommend it although it doesn't always play back correctly right away, and sometimes you need to mess with the settings a bit.

    Hey I saw your piece on reddit and wanted to give some feedback on it, but didn't want to do it in the thread as that would be unrelated to the discussion. I do like the texture of the intro in the first movement, it felt really full and minimalist and I liked it. I think the 4 against 3 polyrhythm really set it apart, I was hoping you'd explore that more in the flute solo spots, but those felt a little plain. without that personally. The second movement is nice, I like how it sounds, but it lacks any challenge in the flute part. The slow movement in a concerto should still be difficult to play. And it lacked any forward motion. Now it doesn't have to have as much momentum or drive as a faster movement, but it needed some eighth notes or triplet accompaniment at some point. Maybe when the melody repeated, it could've been played by the strings or horn while the flute does some fast arpeggios? The third movement is a little too similar to the first for my ear as Rich said. You can do a quick call back to the first movement, but I think it should've gone somewhere else immediately after that. Maybe that's when the switch to major should've occurred. And the ending felt a little abrupt to me personally. But the good thing about this piece is that it shows a very advanced knowledge of orchestration and you've made some smart decisions in that regard that really help out the piece. I think you could've reduced the instrumentation a little though. Bass clarinet and contrabassoon aren't really necessary in this piece I don't think. And perhaps the picc and english horn can be played by someone already playing flute and oboe? You would have to make some changes but if a real orchestra were to play this, they might request these things and you'll have to sacrifice some of this. And on the title card it says the duration is 32 minutes when the piece is only 14, was it intended to be longer? Hope this helps!

    • @bmjessep
      @bmjessep 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate the feedback! This is my first time writing a concerto, so I never wanted to get the solo part perfect. Thanks for the compliment about the orchestration - I orchestrated a few existing pieces before I ever started composing my first original orchestral work. And yes, I copied and pasted the title card from another work, and I guess I forgot to change the duration.
