  • Back when Capcom was releasing Street Fighter 6, they made a rather bold and somewhat controversial decision that left many players quite divided: They will not do any balance patches during the first year of the game's release. What used to be expected every month or character release for buffs and nerfs, is now something that we have to deal with instead. But with a few months and characters now released, do we think this is still a good thing, or do we deserve at least something? Hear what Kizzie Kay and Diaphone think about this!

    It's wild Kizzy is proposing 3 years between major patches. The game is mostly solid but patches aren't just about balancing. As Diaphone said its about keeping the game fresh in a world where people are constantly bouncing from one game to the next. I can see wanting the game to remain more consistent from a competitor's perspective but if you let the meta calcify that much people are going to lose interest.

      For me it just reeks of... privilege.
      The people that are most likely to put in the hours and the time and be able to adapt to such major changes are the ones least likely to want them.
      At some point this genre became a spectator sport- if the sport is boring to watch then it will fizzle.
      Knowledge disseminates so much faster in this modern era that things go stale that much quicker. You find something that you don't like about the game and all of the sudden have stats and/or a horde of people agreeing with you. Some people may like a dead stale game and find joy finding and seeking diamonds in the calcified remains of a discord fighter... but most just want to see what's new at the end of the day. Whether that be new talent, new tech, new rivalries, or new characters. Without the new we're through.

      @@LumaTo Calling that privileged is out of pocket. You could make the argument that wanting Meta refreshes is privileged. People who burn themselves out on the game and play non-stop are at the front of that line to clamor for something new too.
      If the game is fun and the top players can make interesting interactions with the tools given, that's enough, imo.
      That being said, Let Lariat hit on both sides ffs. ;_;

      3 years between patches it's better than a patch every 1-2 months for sure. 2 patches a year is the best middle ground, otherwise in 6 months you don't even have time to learn all the new stuff and all, plus normal people play other games too, who has time to relearn a game every month.

    1. You can't please everyone
    2. You can't please the loudest nor quietest person, you should please what the stats say.
    3. It's a fighting game not my character sucks fix it.
    4. The meta is what makes characters fun not just their moveset.
    5. It's capcom's game, they should have an idea for a fun, interesting game and execute that. There will be biases as to what fun is because of recency, nostalgia and group status. People will co plain because they suck and form a tribe to complain a character sucks to hide the fact they suck.

    Agree with everything here, AND also there should be a patch for alternate music options that are more melodical instead of made for the announcers, give more costumes, and make some small quality of life changes to the underlying input engine and this game is set for me

      Every track needs to be alternated. The Sf6 OST subtitle could be "elevator music from around the globe." I feel like a lot of games play it safe with the OSTs these days making them super forgettable.

      I just hate the character select screen rap crap and wish I could change that. The Fighting Ground menu music is great though.

      Deejay and ken are the 2 most highly represented characters in the capcom cup so there is evidence that he may be a top 3 or 2 character. I personally think if he’s played at the top level along with other characters, then he’s only behind ken and JP, but that’s just my opinion

    Diaphone was really on point with his analysis. It’s pretty clear that lily, gief, and manon are worse and unable to use the system mechanics correctly. They can’t ‘party’ the way others can.

    IMO I’m fine with infrequent patches. Ideas may spread fast in the day and age of the Internet and social media, but it’s still taking a not-insignificant amount of time for players to fully grasp their own character style. I allways point out that Nash in SFV season 1 was top tier for like, 4-5 months before people started to play the matchup way better and their own characters better and every single Nash player who qualified for Cap Cup didn’t even make it to top 16 and he still got nerfed. Minor changes and bug fixes I’m definitely for, but big patches should be like… 8-10 months apart

      I was talking with someone at locals who was beasting everyone with Zangief. Our discussion got to SFV balancing and something I totally forgot about that he mentioned was the fact that the 8 frames of input lag helped Nash assert his dominance in SFV's earliest months. I think that got reduced around the same time seasonal rebalances made Nash meta-irrelevant

    John Wick kills people very efficiently with pencils it doesnt mean pencils are highly effective killing weapons. also the game is not made for just that one person, its not only for tournaments there are normies like you and me too.

    I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. SFV only had a patch about every year. And sometimes it went 2 years between patches. Like, this is not a new phenomenon. A patch a year has been the standard. How is it a radical social experiment?
    But people also underestimate how difficult it is to make adjustments to a fighting game. You make a single move 1 frame slower, and suddenly none of the combos work if that move was in them in the middle. You make JP's spike come out 1 frame slower, suddenly his entire gameplan is gone. Nothing links anymore. The character just shuts down and stops working. Fighting game balance is a razors edge. So unless you make changes that don't really "matter" like changing health and damage numbers. You're going to need to put a lot of time and effort into making changes that won't brick a character.

    The people who don't see the issue with SF6's invalid hitboxes, bad input reading and no combo breaking mechanic, and have been play online competitively for the longest since it's release saying crap like: "SF6 is awesome, i'm having fun" are either cheaters modding the game, and modern players.

    I'd say just buff the low tiers. The only issue with that; it won't effect character variety in the high tiers. JP is still S+ and Ken is still S, everyone will continue to just play those two characters. Ranked right now is Ken every other match.

      BBCF2.0 came out in 2017 and people are still playing that 6 years later without any changes, myself included. If you get tired of playing a game that doesn't constantly get changed, then it's not a very good game to begin with.

    i think they run the chance of ppl just putting down the game, if there's nothing to look foward to, or if they have to wait so long for something to help them in their struggle. A year is just too long

    Spider-Man 2 and Mario Wonder dropped on the same day and more games coming in Q4, people will just drop off the game if they hop online and they're dealing with JP and Ken all day as well as hackers now, too. Patches give people something to look forward to and it lets the content creators keep making good content for the game, they can be the lifeblood of a community and you don't want those people really running out of topics to talk about. It's so easy for games to get lost in the mix these days, imagine being someone who mains a bottom three character and your only option is to learn someone else...or knowing the reality of having to deal with some horrendous MUs for a whole year before things even hope to change.

      There are literally some characters that feel like the are scrounging for damage and others that are overflowing with it. Sure you can beat them off skill but the amount of work you have to do is ungodly.

    Capcom patching the game once a year makes a lot of sense. People don’t realize that there are a lot of players who don’t have the bandwidth to relearn a game quarterly after a patch. There are a lot of people that take the game “serious” and have other priorities so they do not play everyday.
    Second, game developers should have a vision for their game, which shouldn’t be affected by whining from the player base, regardless of skill level. There is a reason why out of all the fighting games in this generation sf6 is by far the most polished and most fun.
    Lastly, nerfing or buffing characters rarely improves the game. SFV only changed when they added to the system. Even if you buff all the weaker characters, they will be replace by a new set of weak characters. So, what exactly is the goal of this patch? Just to shift the tiers around?

      What do you mean by "buffing/nerfing rarely improves the game"? If you're someone who mains one of those characters and feels like your character is under-tuned and can't compete, I'm sure you would feel it improves your game experience. Do you disagree with this? Having more people able to "party" as Diaphone puts it, is a good thing, and ultimately you want to see more representation in tournaments instead of the same 5 characters--that's good for the players *and* the viewers. Your point about people having other priorities and no time to learn other characters works the other way, as well. If you are using Zangief and only have time to play him, then you are in the same boat as the person who over-invested in JP and has no time to learn anyone else. This is reductive though, a balance change isn't going to turn your character into a foreign entity that you don't understand anymore. Minor changes in frame data aren't going to invalidate an entire play style or understanding of a character.
      Not really on the final point about shifting tiers around, either. I think that's a reductive way of looking at it. The argument for the bottom tiers being buffed is so they can utilize the universal mechanics better, even if they shifted up and some went down, the ones that went down wouldn't have the same issues, or really any at all. This game has a massive spread of A tier characters, so all it takes is a few nerfs of the top 3 to open up the meta environment. The mid tiers are in a very healthy spot, so balancing this game is really just about analyzing the top 3 and bottom 3 and making some adjustments there.

    I'm mostly for buffs except the top tiers. Nerfs would be miniscule if we're only focusing on what makes the top tiers strong and it'll just crowd up the A tier. That could be a good or bad thing depending on the person but for me crowding up the S tier is more important. Cuz Ken, Luke, Guile, Cammy, DJ, Juri and JP won't magically climb to SS tier if they don't touch them. We all know these guys have it way easier then the rest. Just let everyone else cook at the same level.

    Patches being centered around tournament dates is extremely dumb. 90% of the playerbase aren't tournament players or people who watch tournaments. It's stupid to center everything around such a small amount of players.

    This is why games need to be patched more than once a year. That shit is dumb. Make everyone spend a year against obviously overpowered or underpowered characters and mechanics. Small patch every three months, with a large patch every 6 months

    yes....they totally need to major buff all those low tier characters. You see same characters in tournaments all the time, and it is getting boring. They even released Aki which is like one of lowest tier character lol. We need to see more variety in tournaments to see fresh toournament.

      Or let him stack Denjin and have variable fireball timings still... give an OD version of Charge that grants 2 stacks or a stack with reduced recovery for oki. Denjin Hashogeki might stay the same cause fast + denjin geki would be too overtuned.

      Let his OD hashogeki be special move cancelable. Let his H tatsu be able to juggle combo without having to be at the far end of the screen. Denjin should be stackable or have a faster recovery.

      I don't think they should make any changes that would create new combo paths. Multiple denjin charges would mean you could juggle from multiple denjin fireballs. It's almost impossible to react to denjin fireballs so making them stackable would make him cheap.
      Here's another idea. How about making the Drive meter recover twice as fast during denjin charge. This would apply whether in burnout or not. It would be a great way to build meter when you're far away or hard knockdown the opponent.

    To me there is just too much nuance being used here, its pretty simple, if characters simply can't keep up, then do a slight tweak over a shorter period of time. Only look at nerfing something that is broken. New season? Change up the meta. But with each character release, help those who obviously need it.

    I think SF6 is the only fighting game ever that can seriously say "no patches until a year". The balance is not perfect, but is very very close, there are almost no noticeable bugs or glitches, the roster is very interesting and diverse from the first day, the training mode is absolutely gorgeous and the online is spot on 99% of the time.
    That being said, I personally think a minor patch would make things even better.
    1- Fix the strange menu irresponsiveness when waiting for online matches while in training.
    2- Tweak the input response when dealing with Drive Rush, so it doesn't "fail" so often. Maybe adjust the buffer, I don't know.
    3- Choose one and nerf it slightly: Ken damage, Ken wall carry, Ken plus frames or Ken invulnerability. 4 of 4 is too much.
    4- OD amnesia shouldn't grant a full combo, unless is very, very scaled.
    5- Slightly buff the bottom five. I think one or two very little tweaks could do really great for them.
    ....
    6- Also add more costumes for the characters already.

    I can understand Capcom mindset of not making dlc characters too powerful, but whoever tested AKI and thought that she was okay to release in her state clearly didn't do a good job, i can excuse her lack of wake up options since all characters i seem to main always lack them but i cannot excuse her lack of whiff punishing on her neutrals. Her zoning suxs and just have to eat pressure, lack of DR options bcz can't maintain pressure from it, her Cr Mk is her only safe-ish poke but it isn't cancellable. I've never seen such a flawed character upon release and i hope Ed and akuma isn't "too safe" on release else i'd really lose interest in the game

      Her buttons have good range, she just can't cancel nothing, which is dumb. You'd think her zoning would be god tier with all her restrictions, but it's not.
      She's pretty cool looking and has mad damage in the corner, but the amount of uncancellable normals is a big issue.
      I play a lot of Sim and he has a similar issue. He has no cancellable confirms off of lights, he's forced to drive rush them or OD. I hate it. His light confirms are so expensive because he cannot cancel into a normal special move.

      He's not. He's just a really powerful zoner which makes everyone annoyed by him. But parry system makes it so he can't just burn you down with fireball pressure. And perfect parries allow you to gain ground just fine. He's really strong but actually has a few key weaknesses. Without charge he actually struggles a lot with AA and every sonic boom means he doesn't have down charge. I'll accept anyone saying he's top 5 but overpowered? Come on. Like MAYBE his FK is a little too good at AA. But his drive rush is slow and not many of his moves can cancel into DI.

      Fellow guile here, it's a combination of strong zoning with surprisingly good buttons. From full screen, guile is pretty much winning vs every character. Midrange, guile is generally even or winning with every character. His pressure at close range isn't the best, but it's still pretty good and can lead into very high damage off a shimmy or whiff punish. His worst position is being pressured, but even then he has ex flash kick and good jabs alongside system mechanics. He's really good, not broken, but really good at everything. His zoning is borderline broken vs a few characters, but imo that's moreso the weaker characters not having enough tools against zoning.

Takes and mindsets like this are why devs keep being given more excuses to be lazy and games like this will never be properly fixed or kept fresh. These people are part of the problem.       I'm pretty sure that Gief and Lily are the way they are because of modern controls and drive rush. I think one button SPD into looping drive rush Oki was something they were so scared of that it put these characters in this state. Makes sense, sounds degenerate

And his drive rush doesn’t fly across the whole screen fast like a anime fighter. I think if they made it where he doesn’t get hit out of his drink animation so easily he’d be super solid. I think nit getting a drink level when you’re at the end of the animation ‘cause you got clipped by a hadouken is bs lol. I don’t think he should keep his drink levels because level 3/4 Jaimie at round start would be too broken. But yeah, he’s super dynamic and has a nice risk reward system I wish more of the cast had.

      Jamie is a fantastic design, but he's got nothing truly busted busted. Even 4 drink Jamie isn't as oppressive as JP, nor should he be. He's got a lot of cool tech, but goddamn it's hard to push that character through the powerful stuff.

    Kim main, just hit master. Honestly, minor patch at the 6 month mark to fix things that seem like mistakes (Gief's LVL 1 only landing during a full moon after you've defeated Rom) and the big patch after capcom cup. I'm really happy with the mechanics and characters. While stuff can be cheap, there are hard counters to it. Check Drive Rush like we've seen people do, be more scoop mindful for folks that like to parry. I assume my inputs are sloppy as hell, so i'm immune to the input reader issues. I don't know, I think they've done real good.

    maybe not a balance change to make the game feel fresh but some more stuff in the game to bring back those players that just stopped playing over time due to other games coming out or just getting bored maybe some new game modes new and better cosmetics nothing is wrong with having more party game modes in SF its not like the pro players are forced to play it. Maybe host some avatar tournaments in game to a casual player a balance change dont mean much since they dont know what most of these changes even do unless its a huge balance patch or new system mechanic.

      I agree to a point. Fighting games will never be completely balanced, but that's not to say that horrible balancing is something that should be ignored either.
      You'll never achieve a 5-5 split across a roster, and even if you did the game would probably end up being pretty dull. But the goal should be to try and narrow the margins to a reasonable degree.
      The reality is that longevity of fighting games is dependent on how viable the entire roster is. You'll eventually get tired of playing one character after hundreds of hours. But if the gap between great and bad is massive, then you've essentially restricted the options players have; because very few people who plays top tier are going to suddenly stop and play bottom tier. Not that no one will or does, but the vast majority understand that while tiers are mostly subjective, there's a reason why you see the same sort of patterns and character selections hovering around the same areas. Say for an example a character doesn't have a dp, doesn't even have a true reversal, metered or otherwise, only has 1 safe button in pressure and only has 1 overhead; vs a character with a dp, with a metered reversal, multiple safe buttons in pressure and 3 overheads...it becomes pretty obvious which character is better; and why someone who would play the better character wouldn't switch to the worse one. So in cases where the gaps are massive between great and awful, balance patches aren't a bad thing.
      I think the biggest issue is that people don't look at balance patches like what they're supposed to be. I feel like people want balance patches to be a huge mix up of characters, because they want to the game to feel fresh. They want the MOBA treatment where every so often characters that were great before get brought down and characters that struggled are now amazing. And they want that constantly ebb and flow of power consistently because they think that will keep the game fresh and exciting. I think that's the problem.

    In my opinion major balance patch about every half year would be ok and 1 or 2 little tweaks in between. For me 1 year is like they lazy bastards. There's obious things that needs balance like parry drive rush (as ppl call this game "Drive Rush Fighter 6"), need to be cost 2 bar from 1 bar. Also DJ's drive rush speed needs to be tweaked down a little. Also buff a little Lily, Zangief, Manon. Things like these. These are just examples. I mean why do we have to wait for 1 year to tweak DJ's drive rush teleport? That's just madness. Certain things need to be patched. Not everything, just a few things to keep the game "fresh" as they said in the video. Also 3 years w/o major patch is like pure insanity.

    Infrequent patches are fine but I actually think the biggest problem with SF6 is the drive system turning this game into full anime. Cr mk xx drive rush + frames on block of full corner carry into guessing in the corner getting meaty DI'd is not fun.

    Emergency patches for broken moves and bugs. Tweeks to systems to incentivise veriety. Adjusting tools instead of weakening whole characters. Balence is subjective but there is an objective goldilocks zone thats reachable. Extremes in either direction is what gets people to drop the game. They'll never please everyone they should just accept it.

    The most competitive game based on prize pool and difficulty (dota 2) has multiple balance patches per day based on real time analysis from top ranked matches around the world. Anytime anything is too strong it gets changed almost immediately. We need to stop giving in to this 1 balance patch a year shit. Its not competitive and the meta right now is honestly stale af. Nobody wabts to see jp vs jp or jp vs ken in literally every single finals

    I appreciate all of this but jps counter is too much. I shouldn't have to guess on my opponents wake up for a third of my health. I know you can bait it but it's still too much. The fact it beats buttons and throws and it is ridiculous. There are characters that don't have invincible wake ups

    Believe me the move that's gonna keep the game alive is not the balance pathces but costumes and game modes.
    They marketed the extreme mode for the game but there is not even a mission to complete playing that mode. That game mode is in the dark and people are starting to forget.

    i'm pro one major patch per season. HOWEVER, some small items should be adjusted. for example, Luke's lvl 3 has a STUPID hitbox that he doesn't need. XD
