    I bought my Vintage LP back in 2013, was second hand but it’s the finest LP I’ve ever played. Been gigged to buggery over the years and does everything I need it to.
    Not quite as good as the original 59’ I had the privilege of playing in Ibiza in 2017 though!

    Dave I agree with you. Revelation for me too. I am a bit biased in that I have a Tanglewood 335 copy with Entwistle HV58s which I have raved about for ever and prefer it to my Gibson (real) 335.The Revelation has more grunt than the other two yet retains good note definition.

    1st off, Mate, it really boils down to personal preference. They all sounded great and the amplifier surely puts the icing in the cake. Now furthermore, who doesn’t acquire any of those guitars and not make the upgrades that we are all familiar with? With that being said, without the upgrades they all sounded very good.

    After reading reviews en actually trying out a few Les Pauls (Vintage, Epiphone) I went for the Vintage V100IT, and i love it. It replaced my 1974 Antoria Custom Les Paul (Super 70 pickups with a flipped neck pickup) which i gave back to my mate after 42 years. It made him happy. I should have kept it :-(

    Wow Im just Blown away!!! Very hard to choose which one sounds the best. These are some of the BEST Les Paul sounds Ive ever heard from Guitars other than Gibsons!!
    Well first I would have to choose the Revelation simply because it has a very in your face tone. You cannot ignore or deny the Rev is in the room.
    second would be the Epiphone, simply because that has the be the BEST sounding Epiphone les Paul Ive ever heard and I own two great ones. But the Vintage gets my soul going because you can still hear that Greeny sound it has. But the Rev has some fat unbelievable mojo going on with it! Thanks Dave this was a treat

    Vintage for me, mostly for the reason you gave. The darker sound also seeems fuller and has more depth and colour. It's marginal, though. My least favourite was the Epiphone, which I thought a bit tinny. I suspect that on a different day, though, my preferences might change.

    Revelation is a REVELATION! Wow...my largest gripe on most Gibson/Epiphone Les Paul guitars is the muddy/mid-rangy pickups that seem to come stock in them. We can excuse the Epiphone somewhat, because at that price point, you can still go out and buy a pair of really amazing after-market humbuckers and fix it. But with 3K Gibsons (referring to newer models with Burstbucker Pros), they shouldn't sound like there's a blanket on the amp. If Revelation sold a lefty Cherryburst, I would've bought one today based on your demo (just not into the lemondrop)! Great comparison as always Dave! Cheers!

    Epiphone for me I liked the way the pickups sounded very ballsy and quite Gibson esk if u now what I mean, and pretty articulate, I've always been a fan of the epiphone LP standard pickups as I've owned a few and I've also owned the vintage v100 u demod, but the epiphone for me.

  • @alireed2009

    Hi Dave, I bought a Vintage lemon drop, but have changed the pickups. Got this really amazing guy who makes pickups called Alex at Alegree , replaced the wilkingsons with his designer pickups, custom made for me and called 'British Blues'. Gives the real vintage Les Paul sound, wonderful clarity and power without being fuzzy and dark. Played the guitar though a CR120 with your 'Peter Green' settings and to my ears they are the closest I have ever got. Had a real Gibson 'Les Paul' and a 335, but these pickups beat them all hands down. Wilkinsons are OK but they lack the definition of the ones I have replaced them with. Perhaps you should check him out, all you have to do is tell what sound you want and he does it in truck loads, even did a set of bass pickups for my wifes Vox Panther, she said she wanted lots of low end grunt, just what she wanted, now her go to bass in in second position.This guy is passionate about making his pickups sound how you want them to. Love your playing, When you said British Blues I was thrilled.

    I feel silly chipping in all these years later, but will press on anyway.
    I really feel like these were in descending order of loveliness and in a very certain descending order of volume.
    I love the top end sparkle and bottom end warmth of the Revelation. For music production , you can get full-range speakers, this seems as close as you can get to full-range pickups!
    Far easier to to filter out frequencies you don't want (using pedal , amp, or mixing desk) for a particular song than it is to add in something that isn't there. The Revelation has it all.
    Thing is I've been a fan & advocate of Entwistle pickups for some years now & all this did was reaffirm my position on the whole thing.
    Sound aside I prefer a slimmer neck So I can see I'd probably buy the Vintage (1003 because more shiny pickups is more good) and later replace the bridge & neck pickups with Entwistles and call it a dream come true.

    Great comparison demo Dave. I ended up going to headphones to make my decision. I found the Revelation to be too bright for my liking and the Vintage, for some reason, sounded a bit woolly and muffled, the Epiphone for me gave the better all round sound both bridge and neck pickups so if I had to go and buy one of the three, it would be the Epiphone. 👍🏻

    Revelation: growl and bite in the rhythm playing on the Hunter; sweet and aching in the solo playing. That’s from the playing mostly of course, but the pickups reveal what’s in the playing. Epiphone did a Joe Bonamassa tribute goldtop with Gibson Burstbuckers and that’s a different guitar from the Epi in the video. Great to hear your playing and the subtlety of your comments.

  • @antmax
    @antmax 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I thought they were pretty similar at a casual glance. Had to go through a couple of times and jump between them with the timestamps. I thought the revelation clinched it over the Vintage thought the Epiphone sounded decent.
    I have a vintage japanese Les Paul I bought as a husk project guitar for $50 that I did my first refret on and liked it enough to put Seth Lovers in. Those were not wax potted either so I know what you mean. They sound more raw and raunchy when you dig in and kind of sing with a very human voice kind of way. When I play a les paul it's for that throaty sound that has a little harmonic grit on the edge of breakup without actually breaking up. It sounds sublime. They all had it, and I had trouble with the Vintage and Revelation because sometimes one might have sounded better than the other depending on which pickup you were using. It was really close for me.
    I expect you get a much better impression in the room than youtube can offer with compression etc. Funny, I just came over from watching Andertons do a blindfolded 4 guitar Les Paul shootout. 7 les pauls in half an hour has done me in :)

    @mervolicious 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Well, I did buy an Epiphone LP and the Vintage Lemon Drop. Vintage is the clear winner in all categories as is it in your video. Most classic LP grunt while being very clear and distinguishable. The Revelation sounded too bright for me, it's an okay sound but not what I want in a Les Paul. Plus the Vintage is the most pretty one you got there ;)

  • @LeeKirkman88
    @LeeKirkman88 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think the hv58's sounded slightly hotter than the other two but sounded awesome plenty of bite. The epiphone had a more warmer sound a little less driven more vintage sounding. The lemon drop i agree it was a bit dull and lifeless

  • @jkd185
    @jkd185 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah man I agree with you . The revaluation was the most dynamic out of the three, the vintage sounded darker and slightly choked compared to the revaluation. The epihone sounds okay too ,but given the choice the revaluation had it...brings your playing to life .Cheers mate .

    So soundwise I personally prefer the Epiphone. It has a softer mellower tone and I like that. I also think the tone is more in the direction to Paul Kossoff and Peter Green. But If I had to buy one, the weight would be an important factor. I own a FGN Standard flattop with seymour duncans and it is very lightweight. But it is more expensive then one of the 3 Les Pauls in the video (but cheaper than a comparable Gibson).

  • @jimmyjimmy951
    @jimmyjimmy951 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Bit unfair on me choosing one of these as my go to is a 2016 GLP Standard (Ebony for what it’s worth). The tone is as you say Dave, “in my head” so its difficult to shake. Based on this I preferred the Epiphone then Revelation and finally the Vintage. I just liked the muddy sound of the EPI but tomorrow it could be different. No right or wrong here I guess.
    Great job as usual.
    Cheers Jimmy

    According to pickup builders I've talked to, you cannot unpot a pickup. You can get rid of the visual wax, but the coil wire is still going to be potted throughout. Same with the slugs and screws.

    Great video as always Dave! I'd be interested to hear you play my Vintage Lemon Drop to see how it compares to yours. I haven't done anything to the pickups, they sound great to me 'as is', but I have changed the wiring loom and pots for a set made by 'Oddtones', which made a massive difference to the guitar. It now sounds way more open / harmonic and makes me think the electronics (excluding the pickups) are this guitar's biggest weakness. Sound-wise it destroys my 2010 Gibson Les Paul Studio, although I do really like the Gibson as it's lighter and has a better neck (the Gibbo has Burstbucker Pro pickups which are a bit hotter than the Wilkinsons).

    Fascinating video again - the difference is negligible for me between the Vintage and the Revelation. Epi does sound a bit muddier.
    So if I was going to buy one of the three guitars in the video I'd go for the Vintage as I like the look of a faded sunburst rather than a cherry, and you can always dial back on the treble but it's hard to pull it out with an amp if you haven't got it. But all three are clearly quality guitars (played by a good guy).
    As you say, there is something that makes you bond with the guitar, and the reality is if I walked into a shop with all three in and I tried them all, I might bond with the Epi over the other two - there are so many things to consider and that Epi cutaway still looks nicer to me and you can get Entwistle pickups for a great price too :)

    They all sound good in their own right but I'd choose Revelation. It sounded great, especially on the bridge pu. Hard to put into words but it seemed to deliver the notes and pick attacks more lively. It also seems the loudest compared to other two. Perhaps it suited better to Paul Kossof thing. Great playing as usual. And thanks for the video.

    Revelation sounded clear and crisp, but...
    If I think of preferred clean/crunch Les Paul sound, I think of the Allman Brothers Band.
    And to me the Vintage - though dull - sounded closest to that, and is therefore my pick.
    But you made them all sound good.

  • @IgorBlackEyes
    @IgorBlackEyes 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Revelation has the perfect LP sound to my ears, sounds really open and has a nice bass end
    The second one has to be Epiphone, to my ears, there's a high mid range in it that really attracts me
    I have to say that the Vintage is the 3rd one, it's awesome, but to my ears it sounds a bit dull and cleaner than the others, like, seems like a low output humbucker
    But for looks, I'm sold on the Epiphone just because of the control pattern, I'm not crazy about the revelation one
    Cheers Dave!

    I recently bought a Revelation RLJ (Les Paul Junior).
    It has an Entwhistle Alnico P90 and the sound is everything I could wish for.
    With the tone on 10 it is a little bit more treble than an average P90 but the great thing is that as you turn it back it has a very usable degree of variation so that you can capture any sound you want.
    It seems a much better idea than having a 'muddy' pick up that is a one-trick pony.
    Basically, I think Alan Entwhistle is a genius and has made a guitar that if I had the skills, I would have built myself. I owned a real Gibson Les Paul Junior for a number of years and I have to admit that my Revelation is actually better. No....... I'm not kidding myself......
    Revelation guitars have changed the playing field.
    Funny that Trevor Wilkinson and Alan Entwhistle used to work together and now they both turn out amazingly good guitars. Vintage, and Revelation. For a measly five hundred quid you can have one of each and take them on gigs without worrying about some clown bumping into you and snapping the neck off your ridiculously priced £5,000 Gibson.......
    Just saying......

    When I think of a Les Paul tone I think of Slash, so to me the chug and deep growl of the Vintage was probably the best for me. Never really been into that British blues stuff, even obviously they’ve influenced many of the musicians I listen to now. Just a Les Paul to me is about getting that Welcome to the Jungle tone which the Vintage I think would do it best

      @@rmcf3972 Probably out of those two the Vintage Les Paul buddy, if you can pick up a second hand Epi Les Paul Custom Pro, they sound absolutely spot on for a GnR tone!

    I do the same thing with pickups. I get a heat gun and melt the wax out of them. I think they sound much better. I dont have the problems with them since I don’t gig and I’m not sweating or playing at super loud volumes

    I agree the Vintage was a little darker. The Revelation sounded really like Koss. The Epiphone sounded louder and stronger.

    I liked the vintage, seems like a more refined tone. Revelation is dirtier sounding, I can see why you like it.

    Revelation was my favorite. It sounded more like the guitar it was copied for to my ears. Why? Honestly I don’t know how to describe it. I will try. Rich, more depth to the sound. Hotter? More responsive? More girth? Many things effect the tone. The actual value of the pots (500k pots are not necessarily 500k. They vary by 20% here in the U.S.A.) An assortment of pots or matched pots should be tried with the pickups you want. The caps you use affect the tone as well. It is a rabbit hole I wish I would have never gone down! Things like wiring it in modern or 50’s style wiring affect it as well. BTW I chose the Revelation before I heard you state you liked it best. I also liked them in the respective order. The first on was the best, the last one the least. Great taste btw

    Great review Dave, for me, it’s the bridge of the Revelation, but the neck pick up on the Vintage was sooooo Kossoff. Which guitar had the best ‘feel’ and playability?

    Tip to anyone listening - put on a decent set of headphones and it all sounds much better ! Don't know what's wrong with speakers these days. To me the Vintage sounds darker and warmer (which suits my blues preference) but in truth Dave makes them all sound great. I would go which ever is best made and feels best in hand as the sound is all very similar. Why ? Because I would upgrade the pickups anyway :-).

    Vintage has something nice in the sound, others not so much. Epiphone would be my second choice, probably because I'm playing on Epiphone SG all the time. Revelation seemed a bit too harsh.

    Late to the party, as ever. It’s obvious by the way that you play it that you prefer the Revalation. You make them all sound great anyway. It’s nice to see someone find a plank that they can express THEMSELVES with. 🙏🏻🖖🏼

    I agree the revalation bridge pickup was excellent, but I prefered the epiphone neck pickup. All of them were pretty good though. Is there much difference in their playability?

    I really don't know what I take, but vintage has a different voice then Epiphone and revelation. Revelation and Epiphone on the bridge have almost the same sound, Epiphone has more bassy sound. But on Neck a little bit different, Revelation has a brighter sound then Epiphone or Vintage. Then I'll buy what more comfortable.

    Out of curiosity is the bridge position from the bridge pickup same on all 3 guitars? As i've noticed one of mine has a straight bridge with slightly more distance from the pickup and the other two are slanted with the high E closer.
    Worth noteing though as if i used the same pickup in either they would still sound different cos its picking up the string vibration in a slighty different place. With more space between the pickup and bridge the more mellow the pickup would sound through the range. The closer it is the more tighter the sound.

    First was too bright, but 2nd and 3rd were closer to my taste. Vintage was darker for sure. I'd say epiphone just stole it. I think the vintage one must have hotter pickups, sounded slightly louder to my ear. Epiphone was for sure quieter. But the first was too bright for me

    Im not a fan of those Waxed humbuckers , used to have an Epiphone Black Beauty and i dewaxed the pickups as they just sound brighter without that stuff on them.

    1st time I've ever heard a Revelation, and it is a REVELATION !
    Oh my gosh, it's the clear winner, more bite, clarity, sustain, and most importantly that Kossoffy "thing".
    Maybe time to sell my Vintage.........................oops !
