This reminds me of that time when reporters were broadcasting a live hostage situation while the criminals were in the car with the victim. The journalists were giving the hostage takers tea and snacks, taking photos and interviewing them while the female hostage was sitting right next to them, and even warning them of police plans to arrest them. The situation ended with a shootout where both hostage takers were arrested alive while the hostage was killed.

The biggest story I remember from my childhood before 911. This case was on the public conscious for a very long time, during and after. The media circus was real. The brutality of the crimes, fame of the mother, and the victim really made everyone angry, sad, and vengeful. If anyone is curious, that media interview with the killer at the end was the reporter asking him about where he got his gun and money (he replied that there are some things he can’t say since even he has some honor) and how he lived on the run.

Ehhhh, you’re giving the U.S justice system WAY too much credit. Too much irresponsible reporting going on that destroys the lives of everyday folk who are actually innocent. Example: a man was labeled a “white nationalist” in a news story regarding a protest. The man in question wasn’t racist, and was actually married to a black woman. When people called in asking about the reporting, the journalist answered that the man was white, and that he knew the man identified as a patriot, so that made him a nationalist. As such, the journalist used the term “white nationalist”, knowing that rational, reasonable people abhor racism and tales of it brings in the numbers they’re looking for. The man who was falsely accused of being racist ended up losing his job, was doxxed, and faced death threats. The journalist had no repercussions and is still out there bending the truth about everyday folk.

those newspapers should have faced legal consequences. publishing the details, tailing her and ruining the exchange, publishing a mutilated corpse on the front page, hounding a grieving mother... absolutely disgusting, zero regard for human life.
I understand where you’re coming from, but that’s a pretty pitiful condolence. No parent should have to bury their child, I can’t even imagine the grief. You bring someone into the world, selflessly sacrifice so much in your own life to support this being you helped create, love and nurture them, want to see the best for them… And then someone else, a human monster, steals them from you. Im old enough to remember a time when reporters wouldnt dare to knock on grieving familys door, shoving mics & cameras in their face as they walked out was unheard of. Things have changed and not for the better..
In this case, intentionally or not, they actively _CREATED_ a tragedy.

The media ofc has responsibility and ethics are impirtant for journalism but almost 100% of the comments here are "evil media" when police seems to have leaked the info so media was there the same night they got called and the true evil is and was the criminals...
@@hurstiwursti freedom of the press and media is one thing, directly contributing to the death of someone is an entirely different thing. your comprehension skills suck

While highly unethical, i wonder why everyone is mad at the media, when the kidnapping and murdering was done by the criminals, they could have at any point decided to cut their losses and release the girl. The cops could have not leaked the info. The cops could have acted differently or worked more discreet.
But ofc its only the medias fault, lets abandon free media.
I’d sue both newspaper for all they were worth. They were directly responsible for what happened. I’d make sure both owners never worked again in any news capacity.
Even if they weren’t directly responsible for the death (which they arent, imo) they could still be sued for emotional distress after publishing photos of someones dead, mutilated child

How terribly tragic this poor child was killed. Why the journalists couldnt have empathy is beyond me. Its sick. Im so sorry to her family.
This story makes me so angry I just want to cry. How can you be so obsessed with a "scoop" that you lose your regard for the lives of the PEOPLE you're reporting on? How do you forget that these are real people in real danger, a real mother who's desperately trying to save her only child, and a real young girl terrified for her life at the mercy of truly depraved individuals? In my eyes, all those reporters who wouldn't heed the media blackout and wouldn't leave the mother alone are just as guilty as the murderers. That girl's blood and that of the other victims is on their hands too. Shame on them all.
The blatant disregard of human life just to get a story is criminal and they should have been charged as so . I can’t even imagine how hard it was to see all this basically in real time when you just want your daughter back ..

So tragic that Taiwan’s reformed laws were written in the blood of Hsiao-Yen’s blood. She was failed at every turn in this case. I can’t imagine Bing-Bing’s suffering too.

He turned to religion at the end because he was a coward, same as his friends. He feared death and wanted to believe he was going to experience anything other than the end of his pathetic existence. I don’t judge the family for forgiving him but it’s not even a drop in the bucket of his sins. To be able to rape a young girl, beat her senseless and murder her, then torment her mother for weeks? And what, you can just turn to religion, as if that will save you? There are no words.
Forgiveness comes a long way and it's not an easy thing to do.... As for the murderer the wages of sin is death. He will meet God and he will be judged. God knows our hearts and he knows who is truly genuine about their conversion to Christianity and who actually follows Jesus and keeps his commandments.... This man broke the commandment thou shall not murder.... It makes my blood boil seeing people use Christianity as some get out of jail free card and showing no signs of repentance or remorse....

I really do feel for the mother imagine you just got out of a toxic relationship with an abusive husband then to become a single mother and raise the only child you have for later into the future for her to get raped and killed. The reporters who leaked the situation and the bosses who allowed those articles to be published should have been charged as well, along with the ones who constantly followed Ping-ping. Just wanted to correct a piece of information: Hsiao Yen's finger was NOT found in her lunchbox in a bush outside Bing Bing's house. The kidnappers had told her to go to a cemetary to look for something, and after Bing Bing and police officers combed the cemetary, they found a plastic bag with a random food takeout box in it that contains Hsiao Yen's finger.
The way that those news publications acted is absolutely disgusting, disgraceful, disrespectful and horrendous! Even the news media outlets, here in America, wouldn’t publish the photos of a deceased person, and the photos of their horrific injuries. That, to me, is immoral.
