I think you are very brave getting so close to those mum and calves. I lived on a beef property and know how skittish some of them can be.

I enjoy your channel all year long, but the 30 in 30 during calving season is just my favorite. Thank you for those glimpses into the farming/ranching life, talking to your cows, and making it fun. Some time into summer or fall I'll come back and watch them all over again.

Giving that cow one piece of cake is like giving a human one M&M. It just leaves them wanting more.

Hi Mike 🙋🏻‍♂️ That was always a big choice of wanting moisture for grass and hay but wanting dry weather for calving! You know with your cows giving their calves up for cake it’s a good thing coyotes can’t buy cake 🤔 good luck be safe

  • @FarmFreshIB

I am not a Wyoming rancher and do not play one on TV, but I do have a question. Why not save a close pasture of around 20 acres or so and then move those close up cows onto that pasture right before calving begins and until after they calve and the calf is up and going for a day or two? At that point they could be moved one at a time OUT of calving pasture and back onto the range. I realize that doing that you may have to feed a bale or two to keep the nutrition up in that short pasture, and that there would be a bit more sorting and moving of cows involved, but that seems easier to me than hunting new babies over 400 acres. You might also need a extra small pasture in a corner (or two) to aid in the sorting. They follow you well for cake. Sorting could be easier than you think.

I'm his twin ..I can't wait to try this ..first time trying grass-fed anything and we love your videos we are always looking to try more good and healthy food not to mention actually knowing where it came from and how it was raised. I see on a daily basis how much love/care you give your livestock.. I hope more people get into wanting to know where their food is coming from and what they are putting in their bodies...

Mike, old farm hand tip. Make a cake pile, then walk a trail of cake to mama. She can then eat her way away from baby to cake pile. That'll keep her occupied away (you hope). Happy calving.

Mike...a suggestion. Something another cow calf ranch in S. Dakota does is keep a running total on a whiteboard ( like your to do list board) of males and females. It's Sonne Farms that does this. I watch them online too. Thanks for listening.

Yeah Mike, when I was growing up on the farm we had Registered Polled Herefords. And I remember number 72, we actually had to go out with the hayrack and get between cow and the calf!
But, she was such a good mother and she sired a calf who was “34”. (which my dad kept in the herd because “34” was a good mother also)! Go figure! Number 34 was temperamental too! 🐂👍😎

I know it must take a lot of time and trouble to do the 30-30, but I sure do enjoy them. How I wish I were able to be there to help out, but I am not physically able to do that anymore, unless there are no time constraints. LOL!!! I admire and respect you all so much for all that you do for your family, livestock, and ranch. You all are incredible and so blessed. Thank you for doing the 30-30 because I truly look forward to each episode (not much housework getting done though. LOL!). You all take care of each other and stay happy! God Bless You All!

Good luck on ending the drought, good haying weather, record jerkey sales, market and micro greens sales growth. Also record Ranch Roundup attendance. Why not offer online pre roundup ordering and a 5.00 discount at the farm market on each ranch roundup ticket. Samples sell everything. Jerkey, vegetables baked goods. May the flu be done so have some fun.

So, how long will the male calves reside on the ranch? They and some females are headed for "finishing" in about 9 months from now, right? This year, you sent off a bunch of steer calves for processing into beef jerky if I recall.
