    Didn't take long to realize that they weren't thinking properly about their safety. It didn't take long at all to get miles out into the dessert. The black box on the back, if it only contained water, it wouldn't have been enough if they'd have broken down. They could have easily prepared a lightweight survival bag that if needed would have made a world of difference.

    I absolutely loved this what a fun adventurous idea 💡!!
    A suggestion would be to fabricate a structure in front of each front wheel that would be like a small cow catcher low and close to the rails that would deflect the rocks of the tracks.
    It would need to probably made from steel.

    First time viewing and riding with you brave rail riders. I was hoping and praying the light at the end of that long "trippy" tunnel wasn't an oncoming train. I suggest, you may have already done this, you take a long flying time drone with you in case you need to reconnoiter and/or send for help with a note giving your GPS coordinates. Just saying. Have signed up for future trips. Real beautiful country. All that's missing is the music theme from "The Good, The bad and The ugly." Half expected to see Blonde, Angel Eyes and Tuco come riding around a hill in the distance.

    As this was your first trip here, We’re you not afraid of missing rail? Also Would be nice if someone produced a quiet muffler for small engines. If they can make a v8 unbearable why not all the lawnmowers and leaf blowers? Questioning the motor, what would you have done if it broke down or ran out of gas?

    • @therocketscientist0000
      @therocketscientist0000  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been going out to this area for over 30 years (at the time of filming this). I've walked and rode a mountain bike on these tracks several times over the years and knew that the tracks were O.K. to ride on. I think small engines can't take the back pressure if larger mufflers are used. At the farthest point (if we had to walk) would have only been 11 miles. You can't get lost, just follow the tracks.

    I would also suggest a 12 volt battery to run some better lights. Not a charging circuit, just run a light that uses about 1-2 amps, and recharge before the 30 amp hour battery goes dead. And at least 2 lights, so if one goes out midway through the trip. . . A lot of abandon construction materials after about the 6th tunnel. I wonder why? And why the owner of the rail line never came back and picked up all the tracks to scrap them. The weight is about 30 pounds per foot of rail, X 2 rails, and several miles. ..
    As for the bent axle, you might be able to straighten it in the hitch on your truck, if you can get it into the hitch, and pull hard enough. Stainless steel is sometimes very flexible metal, until it becomes heat treated.

    Definitely saw the rock(s) you hit, and the wobble noise started immediately and got worse as the trip went on - really noticeable by 1:30:00 or so - similar to the pulsing noise that a bad wheel bearing makes (frequency equal to the wheel's rpm).
    Here's a theory. As heavy as the whole, loaded rig was, and with a fixed axle and no independent suspension, the sudden upward force under the right front wheel that was caused by running over the rock(s), while the left front wheel was held down by the weight of the rig, exerted a bending moment on the axle just inside the left wheel. Then, while the other wheels spun true, the left front wheel was, in effect, out of alignment, e.g., in camber.
    I looked up your route on Google Earth and tracked it from start to finish. Pretty cool. I was unaware of the Goat Canyon trestle and the fact that it is the biggest freestanding, wooden trestle in the world [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goat_Canyon_Trestle]. I'm surprised that you didn't give it any verbal recognition.
    As to "uphill in both directions," rig a small bubble-level fore-aft, and you'll easily tell whether you're going uphill or otherwise.

    • @therocketscientist0000
      @therocketscientist0000  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was actually the right side of the axel that sustained the bend, the same side that hit the rock.

    Congradulations on your thirty seven (at the time) year old creation! It weighed as much as I did. LOL. Did you use a real Honda or the Harbor freight clone?! IfI may suggest wiring at least a 12 v white lamp to the engine, they all support it. To keep it simple a co2 horn for the corners, the class a 1 railroads still use them. For future videos, I ask for less of the cussing for our future video watchers and possibly an over the side perspective instead of the constant straight ahead. Thanks...

    Really cool adventure. I used to do that on real trains as a conductor for Southern Pacific years ago. Seems more fun like this tho. Enjoy. Just curious, do you have those axles isolated on that car, because if you don't, and you go on any signaled territory, you could shunt the track and set off a whole series of incidents.signal changes, crossing gates and possibly a dispatcher heart failure if you suddenly appear on his board out of the blue. . Or throw a red at another train 50 miles away.... Unless you just stay on dark territory or abandoned lines only. I was a signalman for years, then a conductor....just wondering
