  • Owlbear Rodeo is the best D&D Site on the Internet. Change my mind...
    Seriously, this site is AMAZING. Just a short video of how I utilize Owlbear Rodeo for my in-house gaming sessions. The only way to become a lazier DM is to have my players DM for themselves..

    Great. I just yesterday set up a Pathfinder session in less than 25% the time it took me on roll20.
    And you don't even need another browser, as most browsers today support anonymous tabs or even profiles - I set up a separate RPG-profile in my Chrome and it works like a charm 😁

    A good tip I saw I on the lazy dm is to click the monster token and type the damage it has during combat.

    Hi...i see at 7:46 you move a token into the tablet without problem but...When i do it (as guest) in the lower part of screen appear the "trash bin" and it's easy to delete the token by mistake.
    Why you don't have it? (always as guest and not in the DM interface)
    Thanks a lot and great video!

    Looks like it could work with a touchscreen monitor too then. But probably better having that run on a seperate computer (android tv box?) so as to not constantly steal your mouse cursor away.

      @@GuidingBoltGaming I'm running one in person game of Dragonbane, using the included mini campaign in the box set. Another infrequent game running through the old school module "The Caverns of Thracia" using Shadow Dark. And running a one shot tonight of either Shadowdark or Star Trek Adventures 2e Quickstart. If Shadowdark It will be a one-page dungeon "The Mad Abbot's Lair." If Star Trek - the adventure in the quickstart.

    I just discovered Owlbear Rodeo, and my thoughts went to "how do I use this for in person gaming"? I traditionally use minis and maps, but its costly, and painting is tome consuming.
    This seems a far easier solution. My only changes to your set up is a 65" screen, with backlighting, so I can keep room lights down for mood, while allowing my players to roll dice at the table.
    Thanks for the video!

    • @GuidingBoltGaming
      @GuidingBoltGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lucky! I would love to do a TV upgrade and embed it into the table itself. Unfortunately, I'm not allowed to alter our current one, so it'll have to wait until I can snag the perfect one at a garage sale or something. Happy gaming!

  • @petergold4823
    @petergold4823 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Owlbear Rodeo 2 is much better than the original for local play. Try using MouseMux so the players can have a second mouse to move their own tokens and zoom and scroll the map on the TV display.

    I tried doing this with my laptop hooked up with HDMI to the tv but it shows everything from my laptop (both browsers, etc). Am I doing something wrong so it would only show the “player” screen?

    • @GuidingBoltGaming
      @GuidingBoltGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Assuming you're on a Windows device, you'll need to go into Settings > System > Display settings. Go down to the Multiple Screens sections and play with the dropdown options. You essentially want the TV to act as a second screen so you can display 1 browser on the laptop for you to view and the other browser on the TV for the players to view.

  • @mcshannon02

    Nice, I am debating setting up TV or projector to do this.
    Did you have to do anything to the TV to balance or keep from scratching table?

    • @GuidingBoltGaming
      @GuidingBoltGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Eric! I didn't have to do anything for balancing as this model lays flat with on the VESA mount. I did add some sticky felt furniture sliders to the back side so it would slide around the table w/o scratching. Thanks for bringing this up, hopefully others will find it useful as well.

  • @NotoriousGMD

    Is it possible to control the area of the map that is displayed? Here's what I mean: I have for instance a map of the dungeon of the mad mage (huge map) that covers perhaps 500' x 350', but I only want to display a 40x30 portion of that map at any time, and I want the players to see the portion that I determine. Is this possible, or do I have to cut my big maps up into smaller maps?
    Great video, btw!

    • @GuidingBoltGaming
      @GuidingBoltGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, David! Give this short one a quick watch and see if it's what you're looking for. Basically you can have the whole map fogged, and then highlight portions you want your PCs to see. th-cam.com/video/MlfufIyFH5E/w-d-xo.html

    When playing locally do you need to keep moving the 2nd browser back and forth between the 2nd monitor and the original, Load up new map, tokens, enemies etc... and then slide it back to game monitor or is there a way to get it to work without everyone seeing what you are doing...
    I tried hooking up a TV as a 2nd monitor and could see everything I was doing in rodeo on the game screen... Am I just being stupid...

    • @GuidingBoltGaming
      @GuidingBoltGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope - great question! Your screen will be screen 1 and is essentially the DM view - the one who owns/creates the owlbear map. The second screen you display for the group is viewing a second browser window (either a different browser all together or an incognito browser) and they view owlbear via a link you "share." Their screen will update real time, but they will only see what you show (e.g. if you have fog in place they won't be able to see past that but you will on your screen). Hope this helps!

    • @mrnebb01
      @mrnebb01 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GuidingBoltGaming Thanks... Ive been playing about with it, I need to remember to minimise the screen on which others can see while setting up a map... Don't know why I didn't think of it before... It had me stressed for a day or 2 lol... Maybe you could mention this if you do an update on Owlbear in the future, for anyone wishing to home game without the use of tablets or phones, just an extra screen...

    • @mrnebb01
      @mrnebb01 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do wish they had a save screen feature, that we could setup beforehand, and just call up when needed, with all the tokens and fog, all ready to go at the click of a button... It is an awesome tool...

    • @GuidingBoltGaming
      @GuidingBoltGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I just leave my owlbear tab open in my browser after I set it up pregame. It's not a perfect but a semi-solution so you're ready to go when everyone is sitting around the table. Then I just load up the second screen real quick and that's all they ever see.

    It looks like only the rooms are subject to the fog of war, but the spaces between rooms are not, which means the players can see there are no rooms in those spaces. So… they would never have to guess if there is a secret door, right? I mean, how are secret rooms handled?

    • @GuidingBoltGaming
      @GuidingBoltGaming  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We add fog of war to those spaces specifically to keep players guessing. Just because something is hidden doesn't mean something is actually there.

    Question: Instead of of using colours to differentiate monsters, why don't you use the labels?

    • @GuidingBoltGaming
      @GuidingBoltGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great question, and that would totally work also. I actually do use labels for the boss/named monsters, but for the grunts colors just seemed easier. I know, my laziness is showing... ;) Thanks for stopping by and dropping a line!

    • @ags2030
      @ags2030 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In another tip I saw they use the label for keeping track of the HP, so as not to get into trouble with a crowd of identical, nameless creatures and keeping track on paper.

    • @GuidingBoltGaming
      @GuidingBoltGaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an amazing idea! *mind blown* I've heard of other DMs having their players keep track of monster hit points and was toying with the idea of trying that. They already like to move the tokens around the map, and I'm guessing I can grant them access to the labels as well. I'll be testing that out ASAP. Thanks for another great comment!!!

    • @ags2030
      @ags2030 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or, of you want to keep the actual HP hidden from the players, just put damage and number of hits in there -the latter just in case your system allows for resistances so an attack can do less damage than rolled, like Pathfinder 1e. 😉

    • @godsmonkey
      @godsmonkey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I never stopped playing in person. But I dont fear a virus that kills less than 1% of the population, and over 90% of those are seniors or have multiple co-morbidities.
      Also, at this point over 50% of the population has been vaccinated, and another 10% have antibody immunity.
      The real question should be, why haven't people returned to playing in person?

    • @samjensen3969
      @samjensen3969 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The learning curve for owlbear is basically 0 thus making it a quick and easy tool for setting up a game fast for those with busy lives. Roll20 is great but takes a certain level to learn and set up

    • @JeremyMacDonald1973
      @JeremyMacDonald1973 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roll20 does a lot of things but is much more complex. For in person gaming I don't even want the tokens. We put a piece of pexiglass over the TV and use miniatures. All I want is the ability to display maps and use fog that I can easily remove while my players explore.
