Picked up this book on a whim and ended up reading it all in one sitting. The first book in ages that has kept me up until 3am. Really unputdownable.

I started this book earlier today and can’t put it down!! I 100% agree that it reads like a thriller, and a very good one at that - it really makes you reflect about certain aspects of true crime one might not think about 😊

Thank you thank you thank youu! Me and my partner read your written review on Instagram, it was also so well explained and beautifully written, we were immediately sold.
Eliza clark is an amazing young novelist, i am almost finishing this book and I already know is going to be a favourite of mine

My first thought when I started this was that it seemed to be very loosely based on the incredibly sad murder of Suzanne Capper. When I learnt about Vance Diamond I rolled my eyes. Really?! I'm about a third of the way through and it's not gelling with me. I keep thinking I could be reading a real true crime book instead. But then I can't help thinking there must be something here, more than I'm getting from it.
Hearing your enthusiastic opinion of Penance and how much you loved it makes me think I'm approaching it all wrong. I'm missing something. I was going to DNF this but I think I'll take a step back, have a break from it then start again with a different perspective.

I have to agree here. Ive put it down several times and slept through parts. I'll start over and see what I've missed and figure out what exactly is there. I loved Boy Parts so this is a very different read.

@@pandalyn2267 Boy Parts has been recommended to me a lot so it’s on my list. I keep thinking about getting back to Penance but there are so many other books I want to read first. I’m very tempted to read Boy Parts first.

    Hello Willow,
Starting my Saturday morning by telling you I finally tried Korean Bao yesterday. Everybody in my family loved it too. Thanks for sharing your love for books with us.

You summarized this perfectly! I loved this book. I read it in two sittings. I thought it was such a clever spin on a murder plot. I'll be thinking about it for a long time.

Penance by Kanae Minato was the last book I read last year. (It was really good, and when I saw the video title I thought you were talking about about the Minato one lol)

Not available over here till September's end. Your review here makes me want the rest of summer to fly by so I can read it.
It sounds like a masterful creative depiction of murder, it's pitiful societal influences for happening, and worst of all our fascination with it.

One of my favourite books of the year so far! I think it goes perfectly with the episode "Loch Henry" of the new Black Mirror season. Also loved your review.

if you haven't read devil house by john darnielle, it sounds like it does a lot pretty similarly to this one. it doesn't quite stick the landing for me, but some parts of it are absolutely incredible.

The book was great! I read it yesterday. Tension builds throughout the book until the very end. The story and the thoughts of the girls gave me a nasty feeling at times, but the book was very entertaining!

Sounds intriguing! For the non Brits, what exactly are beach chalets, as I’m picturing a Heidi grandfather’s house on the sand?

A little wooden hut that you can sleep in. Like a miniature cabin :)

@@WillowTalksBooks Ah, OK, the only equivalent I can think of like that in the US are the life guard stations, and I think they are only a California thing and the public aren’t allowed in them.

Ah. At water parks here you can rent cabanas. That's the closest thing I can think of. I'm not a beach person, though, so I don't have much experience with actual beach accommodations.
