    Super video! Every aspect of it was over the top (pun). In the 40's I took the steam train with my parents and in '54 the 'new' Swiss train was in operation and I made that trip. Nothing compared to the steam though. The Incline Railway was awesome and at the base there were about a dozen cabins where we stayed on both trips. Thanks so much...for the memories.

    This sure brings back memory’s of the trips I have made to this area. The first time, 1970, and we took a limousine up the mountain and the train 🚂 down. I have been back twice since, and have been back up again about year 2002, and then again when friends moved there for many years. One could step out their front door and see Pikes Peak, but my cardiologist wouldn’t let me go up the mountain again in 2005. I really enjoyed this post as I see places I have visited, and remember fondly. I just really appreciate the quality of your videos you post, but then, you are an expert. Good to see you and Karyn having so much fun. See you Wednesday?

      I asked my cardiologist and he said "I don't know. Go for it!. If you feel faint, get down." Hum.... BUT and amazing place. Really looking forward to spend like 3 days just in Colorado Springs and not running all over the place like this.

    Loved that train when I rode it in 1957. Too bad it's closed now, but may reopen in a couple of years. It's a lot of fun. Closed because the equipment had finally run its course. I remembered climbing that summit tower on 10 year old legs. Couldn't do that now! It's also awesome that you showed the 1957 style train at 9:30. Thanks for another great video. I'm slowing making my way through your video collection. This will take quite a while!!!!

    Been there done that. I liked when we went on it the conductor/narrator pointed out the trees at a 45 degree angle. " These trees ore vertical we are at the angle" Loved it . Also couldn't believe that you can see Kansas however true. The land milage shrinks per what ever feet ( can't remember the exact formula he said ) in elevation Fantastic ride ,need to do it again.

    Nice video and great side trip to take while youmwere there. Tell us you didn't try to get into the nuke facility... Anyway, besides being silly that could get you some time away from garage mahal if you know what I mean. The trains and scenery looked both European and moonlike at least above the tree line, what an amazing view from the top. It's reallY not a big surprise that America The Beautiful was inspired by that landscape a song that still brings a tear, especially these days. But I digress. Thanks again for brightening another Sunday.

    It was 91 degrees today here in southern Indiana! While we don't have any fancy railroads here like narrow gauge or cog we do have three scenic railways within a couple hours driving distance from here. The Indiana Railway Museum's train in French Lick, The Whitewater Valley Railroad in Connersville, In and the train at The Kentucky Railway Museum in New Haven, KY. If you're ever back east again you should give those a whirl.

    Great show as usual. It my salesman days I used to travel through New Hampshire and of course visit Mt Washington which also has a cog railway. They too have changed over to diesel locomotives and now the steam engines are just on display. Perhaps they have one that still works? I do remember when the steam engines were running, they would be belching mass quantities of smoke and in the summer months all the windows on the car were open. If the wind changed direction, all that thick black smoke would go into the car and for that reason, I never rode on it. You could also go up there by car which I have done many times and being a ham radio guy, it was a great place to contact stations hundreds of miles away on VHF where everything is line of site. They had a number of switchbacks with available water to tank up. One load of coal, perhaps a couple tons was all they needed to make the trip up the mountain. The man shoveling the coal was a busy man! In the summer months they would run three engines and there would alway be at least one on a switchback waiting for there other engine to pass. Thanks again for a very informative video as I never could figure out how they breaked the engine. Maybe I should have just asked someone?

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HELLO!!! Karyn is a short wave nut. FUN STUFF. Mt Washington does have a working steam! We are planning a trip when we can fit it in, hopefully in the fall. So amazing how they "hydro lock" the breaks. They let the engine roll back with valves open, and it fills all 4 cylinders with water. Then open a valve and it "pumps" the water back to the tender. Need to go easy. When they first roll back if the speed gets up when the water "locks" the pistons it can bend the side rods.

    Too bad they've shut down "The Cog" for the next several years, and probably for good. It'll be sad to lose this national treasure. Really enjoyed your excellent old photos. The one at 8:57, showing the observation tower on top of the old summit house, brought back memories. I climbed to the top of that tower in 1959. That summit house was replaced by what is now called the "old" summit house. Plans are in the works to build a new house, but with the railroad gone, who knows what will happen up there?

      GEE THAT SUCKS. We were going to ride this summer. ARUG!!!!!!!!!

    • @gmaneis
      @gmaneis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect the owners may have been greedy, taking the money from the cog to use on their other properties, while pouring nothing into railroad maintenance. That's just my suspicion. We'll see what shakes out, but the future of "The Cog" doesn't look good right now. (Edit in 2023) Wow! I sure was wrong when I first wrote this. Hurray!

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We are asking them what's up. Just SUCKS!!!

    • @gmaneis
      @gmaneis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A guy I met the other day at a campground was from CO Springs, and he said that, in his opinion, investors are trying to turn the area into a playground for the rich. I suspect removing the cog might be a way to keep some of those nasty low class middle Americans out of the place. If that's true, I hope their plan bites them in the butt! "The Hunger Games" scenario isn't as far fetched as it sounds. It's creeping closer all the time. (Edit in 2023) Thank goodness my suspicions were incorrect! Way to go, M&PPCG!

    Weak horn. This is still another awesome video. I think there is still a steam cog railway that operates in the east in either Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont I can't remember which it is in, but yeah I think there's one there. I know they were quite proud of the fact that there steam engines were environmentally friendly. Again super job I gave it a thumbs up!

      5 is on display at the broadmoor hotel. actually we had 7 total, numbered 1-6, with there being 2 #4's, the original #4 wrecked not long after being delivered and was replaced with the big 4 we have now. #3 and #6 were both scrapped.

    It’s such a shame that the pikes peak cog railway shut down this winter for good 😔, I remember riding on it and I had the time of my life and I was hoping to ride it again some day but now I know that will never happen.

  • @royreynolds108
    @royreynolds108 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    You forgot, neglected;, or didn't know of the GE locomotives from the 1950's. Each GE pushed a streamlined coach upgrade just like the steamers. In 1956 I rode on one of the newer GE's and two of the steam locos were being used on that day. I have pictures from then. In 1959 I rode back up the mountain with my aunt and grannie and the steam locomotives had been discontinued. In 2007 I took my wife and grandson on a trip to Colorado and we went up Pikes Peak on the Swiss equipment. About half of them are diesel electric and the others are hydraulic. The M&PPCRR uses bio diesel for fuel and you can smell the difference. On that day a work train came down with a flat car; it was powered with one of the GE locos.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, just to much info. The photo I show the GE cars, the prototype was built in the Midland roundhouse. BUt the rest were built under contract by GE. But later GE lost interest in building them. AND the Swiss units were better.

    I had a tour of their shop facilities, which really should be a museum. Shop machinery being belt driven from a central ceiling mounted driveshaft.
    And thank you for pronouncing "nuclear" correctly.
    You forgot to mention the cog steam loco on display at the Broadmoor.
    I'm still chuckling about Nikola Tesla blowing up the Colorado Springs power plant. Oh , the humanity !!!

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Took me years to stop sayen nukular. And spelling it that way too. Karyn and I were (are, you never retire except after 50,000 miles when the wear bars are showen) both teachers. (I also abuse parenthetical statements.) Did you know Tesla was the original "mad scientist"? In the Superman comics there were many "evil bosses". One was the "Mad Scientist". The author said it was based Tesla! Even looked just like him! (I taught animation history too)
      We would LOVE to tour the shops!!! Shops on a grade!! WOW.

    • @JamesPattersonGeepfan
      @JamesPattersonGeepfan 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no more belt driven machinery anymore. Not really a grade in the shops either, there is a ever so slight downhill grade when facing west on track 1. It's the only place on the whole railroad where the track slopes in the opposite direction.

    Nice video. A couple of comments. I believe you said the steam locomotives were 'vulcan' compounds but the word is 'Vauclain' named after Samuel Vauclain of the Baldwin Locomotive Works. Second, where do you get information that the cylinders were filled with water for braking? I've never heard of this, and well I'm just skeptical on a number of points, one being hydrostatic lockup which would cause catastrophic mechanical damage, not good on a descent. This would also use an large amount of water, which the loco cannot carry. My understanding was that steam was used for braking similar to how a diesel 'jake brakes'. As can be seen in a number of videos, the driving cogs also have friction brakes installed, look to be drum-type.

    • @markllewellyn93
      @markllewellyn93 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Prob similar systems used as the loco on Snowdon mountain railway here in UK I think they compress steam or air taken inside cylinders in front of piston direction of travel

    If they run their steam engine again you two should really go back and ride it!

    There is wildlife even up to the top of Pike's Peak. In the mountains of Colorado, it's a general rule that you do NOT drink directly from lakes and streams, lest you contract giardiasis from wilderness animals, an unpleasant experience. You will want to use iodine drops (or similar products) in your canteen. I've driven up to the top of Pike's Peak, and found a mountain goat wandering around the top of the peak, as people took photos. Great photo opportunity, and proof that giardiasis can be present at the top of the world!.

    Actually, the "Big" trains (2 car) use hydraulic propulsion and hydraulic braking (via hydraulic clutches). They do not have dynamic brakes. Their roof equipment is for the engine radiators. Only the "Small" trains (1 car) use electric propulsion and have dynamic braking. Their roof equipment holds the dynamic brake resistor banks and engine radiators.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OH! Their web site said dynamic braking. Must have been only referring to the small cars. AND I found my footage of the steam runs in 96!!! Thinking of reediting to add that in. Still missing about 10 minutes of footage I think. As I remember... But this stuff is good. Several run buys, and on board ride.

      Heard a news report yesterday that the Pikes Peak Cog was closing for the season on October 30 because of needed "track and train repairs". Anyone having reservations would receive a refund. All of this is very odd since the Cog has operated to some degree all year for the past few years and winter trains were scheduled for this year, too. Track and train repairs are performed all year without needing to shut down the entire operation. It seems something serious and unexpected came up, which the Cog does not want to make public.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps... Most of the repairs are done in the winter. Big stuff anyway. But clearly this is un planned. My bet is reservations were off so they figured to close to save money.

    • @thomaslevy2119
      @thomaslevy2119 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I pulled up the Cog's web site and it said what the TV news report did, plus that they were closing for the repairs "while the weather is good." Good weather in November in the Rockies? That is the start of winter. The mountains have already had their first snow. And the weather on the Peak when I checked it was 20 degrees with a 30 mph wind blowing. That makes for a wind chill factor of 18 degrees below zero! Sorry, but "good weather" is in the summer, NOT the winter. Something is going on.

      technically both are dynamic braking, one being electrodynamics (braking through the dynamics of electricity), the other hydrodynamic (braking through fluid dynamics). It's actually a pretty common question we get asked on the way back down, it's just that most railroads shorten the term electrodynamic to just dynamic as that's all they use.

      #6 was built by Baldwin 6/1906 as the only oil burner the railroad would originally have and was retired and scrapped in 1955

    As of a few days ago, it's gone forever. Their equipment and track are becoming too old and they can't find replacement parts for it. Simply put, the owners of the cog railway don't have the money to get it going again. So sad to see something like this disappear into the pages of history. Good thing I managed to get a ride on it last year, not knowing it would be my first and last.

      The rack bars are easily cut out by water jet, CNC torch or even laser as they start out as flat steel bars. The rail is off the shelf also. The passenger equipment is from the Swiss Locomotive Works and is very similar to equipment made for many rack railways.
      I think the problem is that the company ran themselves out of money.
