- In today's video, we take a day trip from London to one of England's most important cities. This video is an Oxford walking tour, home to the oldest university in the English-speaking world. MORE DAY TRIPS FROM LONDON VIDEOS - • City Trips from London
Oxford is an impressive city to walk through. Not only is it home to the oldest university in England, it also boasts a variety of architectural styles from the Middle Ages till today.
Ian, a tour guide with IAB Tours, joins Free Tours by Foot on a wonderful and relaxing stroll through this university town. We begin our tour just outside the old city walls at St. Michaels at the North Gate heading to the Ashmolean Museum and St. John’s College.
Next, we will take a stroll along Broad St. to see Baillol and University Colleges and the Sheldonian Theater.
We’ll then duck into a small alley tucked away off Honeywell St. where we will find a quaint hotel and a tavern that dates back roughly 700 years.
We then head back into the walled city to visit the beautiful Ratcliff Camera and the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin before taking a stroll around the Oxford Botanical Gardens and some beautiful meadows.
And finally, we take a walk on St. Aldates where we will see Christ Church, Oxford City Hall before ending the tour at Carfax Tower.

Thank you Ian for a very informative tour. Really enjoyed the history of such a historic area. Loved Oxford.
Only now watching this tour and it is lovely!! As always, amazing to watch and also very thought provoking!! I am from the U.S., and I LOVE the rich old world history of these tours!!! For those of us who greatly respect and appreciate it, but will probably never get to see it in person, thank you ALL soooo much for your hard work!!!!
Glad you found this one!
Heiio. Thank you for a wonderful tour of Oxford. Actually Oxford is my home town. It is where i was born. Now i live in Hermiston Oregon USA.
You sound so similar to Sir David Attenborough! Wow!, Wonderful tour, thank you!
Wow, thank you! I'll be publishing a tour on Statford soon, so stay tuned.
Almost David has a really posh accent though!
My goodness Ian, you have provided an absolutely splendid tour, and with full narration, have offered all the relevant historical information to what people are seeing - very, very well done !
As a retired alumnus and Fellow of Merton College - now living ( and thanks to Covid, somewhat marooned ) in New Zealand, I was particularly pleased that Merton was included in this tour - as it is often missed completely :(
One of the best tours of Oxford - and as someone who lived in this little town, as an academic for over thirty years, I have soaked up every minute of this delightful and informative video - once again, very well done indeed :)
Thanks for watching, Mr. Torleon! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.
@@ToursbyFootLondon Oh, absolutely, I will, and I do :)
Merton College was established in 1264, and for some additional history, is home to the oldest continuously functioning college library in the world !

We had two days in Oxford with our Viking Cruise. I had no idea how much we missed. Would love to go back. Wonderful tour.
I adore Oxford. Lived there for 7 years and loved studying my history course at the Radcliffe Camera. The Turf Tavern was a fave place to go after studying! Oxford is a beautiful unique place. Going to move back there next year!
Highly informative video.Though I visited Oxford, I was not aware of many historical facts like Shelly and his conection with University College .I missed Christ Church meadows because I didnt know it was just behind the Botanical Gardens.Thank you Ian for presenting a great video
Nice and relaxing. Thanks from Egypt 👍👍🤗🤗🤗
Great Video. I've been in Oxford at least three times. Such a wonderful place for spending a whole day and so easy to get there from London. Coach-Victoria Station. Greetings from Spain 🇪🇸
Excellent video Ian. I came to this after watching your recent outstanding Cambridge video. You really do your research. A lot of information. It must have taken a lot of preparation.
So glad you found our channel, Vi! Welcome :)
So beautiful i am glad they have kept the old architecture and not spoilt it with horrible modern buildings.
It's a beautiful little city, isn't it? We have one coming up for Stratford and Bath over the next month or two.

First-rate tour. Thank you, Ian.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you, Ian! Great video!
Thanks for watching :)
Fantastic Tour thank you
Our pleasure, Mike.
What a lovely tour! While watching it, I thought it would be a great idea to create literary tours of this fantastic city, but I guess there are just too many authors associated with this city. JRR Tolkien has been my favorite author since I was nine (several decades ago), my name is Shelley because my parents didn't like the female names on either side of the family (I adore my namesake's poetry), and I am now an avid fan of Deborah Harkness. I can hardly wait to get to visit Oxford. I've been to England three times now... Cheers from Seattle!
So glad you liked this, Shelley! A Tolkien Tour is a great idea... We hope you get to see Oxford soon!
I like this tour,so knowledgeable,thanks

My birth city
My gods...was that a phone booth?!
For the tourists.
Actually, unless there's been a change in the last 40 years, Christchurch College is known as "The House", because in latin it is is Aedes Christi, or House of Christ
Thanks for the extra info, Ian!
Who's better in education and rowing? Oxford or Cambridge??
It's 86 to 81 wins in the Boat Race for Cambridge! Each can claim victory in education depending on the departments (mathematics, science, literature, etc) :)
How many miles was this walk?
Which university is the best? Oxford or Cambridge?
Leeds!
Peak in bermuda 2077
World ranking University but infrastructure is not so charming and
beautiful like other world ranking Universities,it should be renovated with
modern technologies.
This may sound like a stupid question but is oxford unisex? Or all male? I mean I don't know
Thank you very much, you just answered my question!!! Awesome tour!! Very informative
Is A city not A town, just saying
University city not town.
Of course Oxford is a city but it's got the feel of a town. No biggie.
As below, of course it is now. But the title is based on the fact that it had a university for over 4 centuries before it was designated as a city.
Beautiful ❤️,💚🥀🇵🇰
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks!
Very much appreciate your kindness. We will let Ian know.
Thank you Ian, lovely tour and very informative.
Glad you enjoyed it, Sharon. Ian also has a video in Stratford upon Avon th-cam.com/video/bM_WI9_x_Jc/w-d-xo.html.
