Deploying Interceptor 003 in Can Tho River, Vietnam | Cleaning Rivers | The Ocean Cleanup

  • Interceptor 003, the last of the 2nd generation Interceptors to be assembled and installed, has been cleaning the Can Tho River, Vietnam since December 2021. Deploying Interceptors is a group effort, so we are grateful for all the input and support we get from locals, partners, and operators.
    Can Tho Rivers runs through the city center and feeds into the Bassac River (locally known as the Hậu River). The unique conditions of this location, such as the heavy boat traffic and varying currents, will help us to trial the design in exceptional situations and better understand the technology while the river program is in the Validation Phase.

    To rid the oceans of plastic, we need to not only clean up what is already out there but also stop new plastic from entering the ocean: we need to close the tap.
    Rivers are the main source of ocean plastic pollution. They are the arteries that carry waste from land to the ocean. Our research found that 1000 rivers are responsible for roughly 80% of the pollution.
    Working together with government leaders and private corporations, our goal is to tackle these 1000 most polluting rivers. How? By deploying Interceptors.
    The Interceptor is The Ocean Cleanup’s answer for river plastic waste. It is the first scalable solution to prevent plastic from entering the world’s oceans from rivers.

    Would be absolute crazy if you could start a livestream that always streams from one of the interceptors around the world! If it gets dark for Interceptor 004, switch to Interceptor 003 and if it gets dark there switch to Interceptor 002 in Malasia! Would be absolutely insane! Keep it up guys!

      I guess - us with the phones on watching live stream while cooking, showering, relaxing- would burn our batteries constantly - and on a big scale as many as we are supporting this cause - would attribute to another pollution.. So no live stream please 🙌

    Thank you so much for making a difference. It’s so inspiring and a wake up call to see how polluted rivers are. As a Vietnamese, so excited to see Inceptor 003 deploying in Can Tho. I was cleaning up the beach with a group of friends the other day and the biggest learning from the trash collected was the micro plastics and the amount of filter tips buried in the sand.
    Hope to see this project gain more tractions in local news in coming months.
    Some people in the comments said it’s useless since people will continue to dump trash and things will be back to square one.
    But I think the younger generations, many of us now are a lot more environmentally concious and are taking actions. Strong believer in education and raising awareness!
    Big kudos to you Ocean Clean Up team!

    Countries with significant amounts of plant material mixed into the river waste stream could use this as fuel in waste to energy systems. An interceptor collecting 20 tons of material daily could produce several MW of electricity. Water hyacynth is already being considered as an excellent candidate for bio fuels as it is produced very easily in polluted environments and readily converts to methane for clean electricity production.

    This is great, quick question though. What % of the waste collected is organic? Also is collecting the organic waste on the top of the rivers good for the eco systems? I hope future models can filter organic and plastic waste, that way the bins don’t have to be collected as often and they can collect more trash

    • @TropicalOceanCleanup
      @TropicalOceanCleanup 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Here on our Kaboomed canals up to 2/3rds or more can be natural debris during storms. We remove the plastics and trash then release the natural debris to the ocean like it has been for millions of years.

    • @dahliafenr
      @dahliafenr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a note: the organic part in this case shouldn't be a problem since the Eichhosirnia, basically these floating plants, multiple extremely quickly. When they die, the waste poison the water, killing biodiversity. When they clog the stream in canals, mosquitoes breed, spreading malaria and dengue. You can never remove them all, and too much of them cause as much damage as algae blooming

      The plant you're seeing most in this video is the water hyacinth, which is considered invasive and is a problem for the general ecosystem as well. Agreed that finding a way to sort the waste is good but in this case, removing this isn't bad either.

    This is great to see these interceptor units getting deployed. At some point bigger changes need to be made. This is great as far as the rate at which it can collect, the set up and location as another country in Southeast Asia is a good place to have it. There are a few things here though.
    -How much of what is coming in is organic waste because it seems almost half here is that plant or coconuts? I hope this is separated out and dried out in the sun and then composted if it's a noxious weed.
    -Partnering with Coca Cola? Did I read that correctly? That company makes more plastic bottles than any and all for an unhealthy drink. They have to partner with you from their perspective because they know they've made a mess but they can't be part of the solution.
    -I'd like for these videos to show the next step in the collection process, recycling? I know that some of these countries struggle with that kind of infrastructure. It would be great to see how it's done. Or is it similar to the ocean ones where it's separated and sent back to Europe?

    How long is it going to take to build and install 1000 to cover the 1% of rivers? Is there a large scale production plan to do them in parallel?

      I just saw an interview where Boyan Slat said the target for 2022 is about 25 additional interceptors. So it will take decades at this pace. Let's hope they get more support so they can move faster.

      Why doesn't your country make the interceptors themselves?

    Why the thing is 4 small containers? And not 1 big container or has this to do with weight and trash built up?
    Because can you not bassicly built q big container on work platform that you move with a boat for a cheap solution
