Gated level crossing in Elsenham, Essex beside the station. Its surprising that this crossing still has gates given the business of this line. This crossing has alarms which sound, alerting the signalman (and pedestrians) that a train is due and the gates should be closed. Previously, bells were used but since, 'YO5' yodalarms are now used.

How refreshing to see gates; especially manual gates, still in use today.
Yeah, you don't see many nowadays, especially on a mainline railway.

Nice. One for my county! I spoke with the gate operator once snd said it was the awkward road layout that is the reason for Elsenham having gates. Thd near miss, here 5 months ago is in the news
Thanks. It must be an awkward one to try and install barriers and warning lights at. Maybe design limitations have been the cause of why its still the way it is.
@@UKLevelCrossingsChannelon the side you were on the barrier could be a long one that cam be in the grass patch and on the other side, by the danger sign. For Wigwags, they could place them similarly to Pont Croesor A. Or they can make the Crossing like Hilton

Recently moved here and was wondering about these gates... just seems a bit dangerous to me; one mistake or extra minute taken for the operator to close those gates and someone (in car or not) on that crossing can get it. Won't be surprised if one of these days this sort of thing happens and I see it in the news. A previous commenter already said that there was a near-miss 5 months ago.
Not really as these gates are interlocked with signals on the line. The two signals in each direction, closest to the crossing, remain at red (danger) whilst the crossing gates are open. When they are closed and the signaller confirms there are no obstructions blocking the tracks, only then can the nearest signals turn green and a train can proceed over. If a signaller closes the gates late, a train will have to slow down approaching a red signal. The only near-misses I can recall at this crossing are where pedestrians have walked down the platform behind the closed gates and crossed the line with trains approaching.
Was this the crossing where 2 school girls lost their lives some years ago which was a tragedy but is a great video especially on a main line for Stansted Airport and the main route into London Liverpool Street the pedestrian 🚶♂️ crossing gates should have also been locked like the one's at Manea level crossing the only other gated crossings i know off are Stonea and Whittlesea on the Ely to Peterborough line

This level crossing needs to replace the gate crossing for modern electric barrier level crossing which will make it safer for everyone.
No plans to upgrade it as far as I know yet surprisingly.
