- Yours is No Disgrace recorded live at the Rainbow Theatre December 1972. This Concert is part of the Close to the Edge tour and the video came out in 1974. This brilliant performance became a really great video for any true fan of the earlier forms of Yes. The piece starts differently from the album with a jazzy intro and blasts into a middle section with Howe having an orgasm of a solo......... If you haven't seen this you don't know what Yes was all about.......

Yeah, he actually gets a little good camera time in this film. Oftentimes in concert footage you can hear him rocking out but he is invisible. I wonder if some filmmakers would do it differently now that Chris Squire is no longer here.

At the time, there was definitely no one doing what he was doing. A guitar god in the truest sense, and my favorite guitarist ever. He’s still a beast, but he was so far ahead of his time then.

Agree with all the comments on Steve Howe. It was only recently I realized this song is essentially a tour-de-force of guitar techniques. I would also like to acknowledge the hard driving bass of Chris Squire. Most bass players provided low backing sound, but Squire's bass riffs were prominent parts of the music.
Huh , lucky for you there happen to be far more than one greatest of all time live performances. I'm greatful to have the knowledge and experience to understand subjective labeling. Yes, it is great, amazing compared to mediocrity, but compared to the greats I have seen , well , that is for me to know and you to discover...... I would agree but that would leave your opinion to be as great as this performance, if not better ..... I'm not willing to bet the farm on those odds....... calling anything the greatest of all time already limits your future to hearing crap, I believe your ears are better than that......
Definitely in that ballpark. Couldn't believe how it all was there, on that semi-acoustic guitar. What sound. Flawless. If there are a Top 5 British rock guitarists, Howe is among them along with Jimmy Page. Astounding how well they reproduced that track live. I got the impression Chris Squire sings the lower harmonies.
Every time I return to this song I am in awe. It is genuinely one of the best pieces of music ever written. The way Steve Howe's explosive guitar part is introduced at the beginning, how it "flies away" and leads seamlessly into a powerful wall of vocal harmony, and then runs smoothly into calm and beautiful walking bass section. And then explodes again towards the end. Also the execution and musicianship is outstanding, to compose such a piece is one thing, but to execute it instrumentally and vocally is another. Truly astonishing.

This was from December 1972. Bruford left the band right after Close to the Edge was finished July-August. The only tracks that Bruford is on in Yessongs are Perpetual Change and Long Distance Runaround.

Saw them at the Rainbow for the first time, wasn't immediately impressed as the lead guitarist was playing a semi acoustic. Was I in for an education. Steve Howe has to be the most underrated guitarist of all time. This man brings a tone to his music that seems to have surpassed all others. Fifty odd years on and this still gives me goose bumps.
I was 15 in 1972 and was blessed to see YES in their prime and many times thereafter...I have been a huge fan of YES and PINK FLOYD and PROG ROCK for more than 40 years. I am only 58 and still young and going strong! Love my Generation!

My first Yes show: Dortmund, Germany on April 16th, 1974 (Tales from Topographic Oceans Tour).
My best Yes concert (cuz I stood very very close to Chris) at the famous Hohentwiel Fortress Ruins/Germany on July 17th, 2003.
The most impressive Yes show for me: Yes Symphonic in the famous Gewandhaus Leipzig, Germany on November 10th, 2001

Man I love this and the Yessongs Album version! Steve mastered the Classical guitar by 12 years old. He is the ONLY guitarist I've ever heard that can instantly blend Jazz, Classical, bluegrass, and rockabilly and make it sound amazing! Without a doubt the best rock guitarist IMO. It kills me how scary talented this guy is. And sadly Chris is no longer with us and he's like a freight train on that bass. The only guitar/bass duo that come close is Alex/Geddy.

Fer sure. Went to see Yessongs when it was still in theatres. Went because I liked Roundabout and Rick Wakeman's hair. Came away thinking that there would never be a reason to listen to any other band. These guys were the pinnacle. Steve is, what, about 24 in this video? I do disagree with 1 thing, however: as good as Steve was, Chris, Rick and Alan certainly kept up with him. And if it weren't for the musical composing genius of Jon Anderson, his ability to bend all of these great musicians to HIS vision -- there would've been no YES. This was history's example of lightning striking 5 times all at once -- and we were lucky enough to have it captured on film.

Rick Rocker NOBODY! Can improvise on any piece of music like Steve Howe. This video is a prime example of his virtuosity. He never got the recognition of Hendrix or other so called Guitar god's because he didn't strut around the stage like he was God's gift to Rock. +Gabriele 95 Not without Bruford. The "Fragile" tour line-up with Bruford was the best. Bruford is one of the greatest and most innovative drummers of all time. Alan White is just another excellent, professional rock drummer playing Bruford's licks. He's nowhere near as original or unique. Bruford recorded the album but did not do the "Close to the Edge" tour. Stupid of him, since not doing the tour meant a contractual obligation to share all his album royalties 50/50 with Alan White also, even though White didn't play a single lick on it. He should have done the tour, then joined King Crimson afterwards. Fripp would have held the drummer's spot for him since there's no way Fripp could have found a better drummer than Bruford in the meantime back in those days.
metamorphosis67 I'm a new Yes fan, and I'm with you that the Fragile line-up was the best. What destroyed this line-up was Bill Bruford's constant arguments with Chris Squire and Jon Anderson since Chris would be late for flights and performances, and Bill struggled to understand Jon's northern accent. I agree that Bill should had soldier up for and thoroughly ended the Close to the Edge Tour while Robert Fripp should had reserved King Crimson's drums for only Bill.
In '77 I gave a girl the choice of going to prom or going to see YES in the round,,,, she made the right choice, either way I was going to YES no matter what her answer would have been. 8)
+Jackle61 Hmmm...Not that I want to say you were wrong...BUT..... you must mean the 1979" In the round tour", (which ran from April until June, and would coincide with any "prom" dates!). In 77, Yes did the Going for the one tour, which began in late summer and ran until early Dec. 77 (and it wasn't an "in the round " stage).. Likewise, the 78 " in the round tour" started in the fall until early winter. Could it have been maybe a "homecoming" school dance? Just sayin'!

I remember that tour they did. I was at that one and one they did back in 74. I would have traveled a long way to see them in 91 if I had known all of the past members of Yes were there. By the way, did you ever get to the porn movie with her? LOL...

I was 12 years old when I saw this concert live. It was life changing. I have seen a lot of the great bands over the years, several hundred shows. But this was the show that expanded my mind as to what music could be. The obvious joy these guys had in the performance and the near unbelievable talent level they all had. It was a lot to take in at that age but the experience took me down many wondrous paths where I met so many truly enlightened people. Because Yes fans really are like no others.

I was in high school when this tour was out. Yes was such an influence in my life. They were way above anything that was happening in progressive rock at the time. I know the Peter Gabriel Genesis fans would beg to differ, but Jon had something special in his vocals that made everything Yes did seem like magic. There were people who used to swear Yes must be aliens that came to us to teach us great music. No matter how big a fan, that always made me laugh.

10 years ahead of their time. My first concert sans parents while in 6th grade in Chi-town. Shaped my life of music to follow!! Wish my partner in crime were still alive to seem them inducted to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this coming April! Thank you Brad!! The wife and I miss you, I will never forget the times we made our way to every show we could as kids and adults, and F Big Pharma for taking your life and the Gov't for not helping those with your illness. This is so heavy and holds all the power and potency that it did 40 years ago.
I remember when my Dad got this for me on 8-track. I played it through a Sony 80 Watt stereo receiver connected to a Panasonic 8-track player with stereo analog dB(Decibel) meters. State of the art back then. It sounded the same as this TH-cam video. I lived by Chicago and I remember when I was 12 years old or so listening to WKQX 101.1 FM when they reached out to the listening audience hoping that anyone had a better recording of Yessongs. Yessongs was horribly recorded but the melodies were so beautiful written by Yes that I ended up breaking the tape inside the 8-track after 30+ times of hearing the entirety of it.
R.I.P. Chris Squire. Glad I was able to see YES in concert live so many times. In Hamburg at the YES Symphonic tour, a couple of guys & I were up against the stage in front of Chris as they were about to go off stage. We were giving them the "We're not worthy salute" & bending at the waist. Chris saw us, pointed us out to Steve & they both laughed. Thank you Chris wherever you are. WE'RE NOT WORTHY!!!
Just great, 5 guys at the top of their game: whilst Rick wasn't the original keyboard player on the album track, he just adds and adds to the tune. So sad that Chris Squire passed away, there was no other bass player who used his instrument as a lead line, and the tone and sound he had were so individual.
This line-up has no weak links, with White on drums, Howe lead, Squire on bass, Wakeman on keyboards, and Anderson lead vocals. Just unbelievable musicianship on display.
This is the most wonderful thing I have ever heard. I cannot believe they were that young. They understood music and dynamics early. This should be a stepping stone for today's s pop musician. Unfortunately our dumbed down populace would never understand it. Thank you for posting this....

I saw them 3 times in the early and mid- '70s and every time there came a point when I wished the show would never end, I just wanted to listen forever. Funny thing, I would look around and everyone else would be like me - just sitting, mesmerized by this band. No dancing or jumping around or waving their arms. Just sitting, maybe singing along. Totally lost in the sound.

@Louise X The album solo was recorded November 14, 1972 at the University of Georgia in Athens, about a month before this, their final concert of that tour at the Rainbow Theater. The album version was edited but you can hear it in its entirety on Progeny-Seven Shows From Seventy Two. And I agree, the album solo is arguably the best live recorded guitar solo ever.

I saw them at the Oakland Arena 9/22/77 on their "Going for the One" Tour. I remember Chris' wearing that beautiful romantic clothing that was popular then. The whole band, not so much glam, as here, but inspiration and heart filling. It was an uplifting experience that still resonates with me.

Truly amazing group of top tier musicians. All are examples of the rewards that artists can reap from practice and dedication. But Steve Howe is SO over and above his peers on guitar l believe that he may have,like the Robert Johnson legend, made. a pack with the devil to be able to play so well. How can anyone be so gifted @ such a young age?
Yes are simply REAL musicians--truly legendary--nobody plays like this anymore but I wish someone did. STEVE HOWE----been listening and watching him forever. Try playing his stuff. He is off the meter. A true legend as far as guitar players go.
