During the Korean War at the Battle of Kapyong, Colonel Stone, Commanding 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (2 PPCLI), and his men were surrounded by hordes of enemy Chinese Soldiers. Defeat was imminent for the Canadians, as they were trying to keep the Communists from entering Seoul. Colonel Stone radioed Artillery to fire shells on his Battalions position, knowing he and some of his men would be killed. When this started, the Chinese ran like hell to get out of there, and 2 PPCLI were spared, as was their mission to protect Seoul South Korea. Col Stone was a good man. I may not have all the facts correct here but I believe I'm right. Col Stone lost very few of his men during the Korean war. For his and the Battalion's bravery in this epic engagement, the Battalion was awarded the U.S. Presidential Citation. The 1st foreign Regiment to be awarded a citation like this by the Americans. The Chinese probably, were thinking the Canadians were crazy. Anyone can feel free to correct me on this. It's the soldiers and engagements like these Don Cherry is so big on, and really wanting us to remember!!!!!!

I understand that a lot of people in Canada see poppies as a sign of respect, but I also see that these veterans fought for people today to have the freedom to choose what to do. I do believe Don Cherry chose poor words, but I think he should have gotten a chance to clarify what he meant. It is a slap in the face to fire him today. If I had to fire him I would have waited, at least until tomorrow. He admitted in a later video that he should have said everyone should be wearing poppies and that he should have at least had the opportunity to correct himself and apologize for narrowing down migrants. The way it was handled was poor. I grew up with other immigrants, many of them white Eastern European migrants and we all bugged each other growing up and grew thick skin. Later on we all ended up very close friends and laugh about our childhood behaviours. Kids are formed by their parents ideas, they are not at fault. Don comes from a different time where saying things like this was acceptable and no one even batted an eye. You can’t expect a senile 85 year old man to be politically correct all the time. It’s just not realistic. Let him apologize and move on.

Because 2000 miles away, a poor soldier was killing himself so his family could have a better life.
Weird how, 75 years later, Japan is intensely prosperous..
Also weird how some can't see the similarities between a world war 75 years ago and a country whose people are being slaughtered today.

If. We. Do not. Send. Soldiers. To fight. Another. Country's. Battles. When they. Can not. Defend. Themselves. As we. Have done. Historically. For 80+ years. We should. Not. Be. Opposed. To accepting. Refugees. As we. Have also done. For 80+ years.
The real question is, if it were Nazis killing Syrians mercilessly in a war we still don't understand, would people with your same mindset still be opposed to them immigrating?
I just think, if people are going to throw around the accountability and consistency arguments, they shouldn't ignore all the consistency and accountability issues.
Far too many people are willing to make things political without having a good defense or justification for what they say.

It was in real poor taste for them to have dismissed him on Remembrance Day, not only out of respect for Don and all he's done, but to have shifted any focus from what this day means to Canadians. I personally won't watch or support Rogers Sportsnet media going forward.

Nobody said the conversation about poppy’s was the bad part. It was calling out all immigrants on not wearing poppy’s. “You people” is a negative term thrown at immigrants. Since we can’t tell who am immigrant is, regardless of color, just by looking at them, he’s referring to brown people. This isn’t the first time he’s said a terrible thing either. Public apologies never help a PR issue anyway... people just claim it's a meaningless effort and hollow (which they always are... they're an attempt at damage control). However, Rogers/Sportsnet has the right to fire him if he does not fit in to their modern sensibilities. Despite this, it's a shame that we live in a time where the loud minority of people can cause such a stink that cancel culture claims another victim.

Shannon I think you may have opened Pandora's box in the comments on this one. You actually provide a well-constructed perspective that I hadn't considered when it comes to this as everything I've heard and read has been so reactionary. However, I see the same level of thought hasn't been put into people's comments on your video.
Despite you wanting to keep politics out of your content, something like this will be inherently political in this day and age. I looked forward to what you had to say on the matter because I knew you would be objective about it. Regardless of some of the arguments in the comments I still enjoyed what you had to say on the matter.

@@LiveLXStudios First and foremost this is a hockey channel. It is why I am subscribed, it is why I watch his content. Shannon has made it clear that he doesn't want to include politics in his videos and this is the first video of his that I've seen that has approached a topic that involves it. Given the circumstances I doubt he had much choice in making the video considering Cherry has been synonymous with Canadian hockey for 40 years.
I agree with Cherry being fired but this video highlighted the things he's done in the past both good and bad. How this situation snowballed from what could have been a well intentioned message encouraging Canadians to support their veterans to a xenophobic rant that he refused to apologize for. How he's been outspoken against Russians and Europeans in the past and how he's been a supporter of animal rights groups and junior hockey throughout the country. Don Cherry has a legacy, warts and all.
I've disliked him for his opinions on the modern game and his disdain of foreign players in the past. To me, what Shannon highlighted is a fair interpretation of both sides of the coin.

I'm glad you have put out your own take on this and I don't want to pile on hate. I know this is a bit hyperbolic but think if there was a nazi channel spewing hate, the excuse "then don't watch it" doesn't fly. Its not about people making the choice to turn off something they don't like. This is about Sportsnet platforming a guy who is discriminatory towards a whole group of Canadians. At some point they have to say "ok enough". I agree there were a million times in the past they could have done this but you can't let this sort of thing stand when you have such a large group of Canadians who feel they were targeted.
