It now sports a 2560x1440p WQHD+ display option that supports 100% of the AdobeRGB color gamut and drives 500 nits of brightness, along with Dolby Vision HDR (High Dynamic Range) capability.

    DDR3 in a 2018 laptop? That's so weird, considering the T480/T580 both use DDR4.

    I just got this over the 7th gen due to a lower price. Man, am I happy with this machine! My history of laptops have been a bit meh. 2 Dell machines, the first gen Surface Pro and the 4th gen Surface Pro. This is amazing! I may never go back to anything else but Lenovo.

    From what I see on lenovo.com, the HDR WQHD 500 nits display is glossy. Did you do any comparisons of glare vs. the usual matte displays? All the other display options are anti-glare (but 300 nits). I imagine the brightness can compensate for the increased glare somewhat?

    Great review! I'm definitely torn between this light and portable X1 and the more versatile XPS 15. I think the latter is overkill for what I do, but having a GPU that handle light gaming is attractive.

    I notice your battery life test turns out that the late 2017 Dell xps 13 1080p performs the best? Does the 2018 version has a much smaller battery of capacity? And how much time will be lost if it is a QHD version?

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has the same battery capacity and QHD will definitely bleed off some batt life. You're simply lighting up a lot more pixels. Hard to say say how much less it would offer though. We'd have to test it.

    I can not decide between this and the yoga version (both full spec). They cost me exactly the same. I am worried about the cooling on the yoga though, otherwise it would be the better device for me....

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The latest Yoga with 8th Gen is a great machine too. Don't think you can go wrong either way but if you like its flexibility then that's cool. The X1 Carbon is smaller but it's not like the Yoga is exactly big either. :) Both very thin, light devices. Good luck!

  • @bakkermaarten007
    @bakkermaarten007 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I would like to see some comparison between the HDR- and non-HDR WQHD displays. I've got the non-HDR matte display just because of the matte layer. Can't stand glare. And cannot stand high brightness either; hence I cannot imagine why anyone would use the HDR display at full-brightness of 500 effin nits...

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That's actually a good point. I run this machine now as my daily driver and I rarely turn it up to full brightness and it quickly gets turned down after I'm done looking closely at something. I can tell you it helps battery life a ton though because I can turn the display way down and still see perfectly fine with great contrast and saturation.

      @@Hothardware Is there any comparison between 2K HDR glossy screen & Matt screen ?

  • @ahtoomians
    @ahtoomians 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    currently using the HDR screen and am puzzled why you say it outperforms the OLED panel from the x1 yoga. the contrast on the OLED panel is nuts. the HDR LCD panel is a better overall COMPUTER display though plus not having to worry about burn in and absurd OLED panel replacement costs... but if money wasn't an issue, and i could replace panels at will i would go OLED.

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just showed you in this video some of the benefits of the HDR display. Mind you, this is a very bright 500 nits HDR panel but still. OLED isn't always setup to handle the HDR gamut, though it can be HDR compliant. I was just speaking of these two specific displays, comparably, they way they are configured in each of the products. I love OLED too, but I think in some cases, a quality HDR display with all its improved backlight, etc. can compete easily with OLED.

    why they haven't upgraded to DDR4 yet?

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question. DDR3 is generally cheaper and at the right speeds, there's likely not much of a performance hit.

    • @dv2045
      @dv2045 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      really? on paper DDR4 is twice the speed of DDR3 and a bit lower energy consumption. btw, aint the RAM 2133Mhz?

    • @Hothardware
      @Hothardware  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      D V sure it can deliver twice the speed but also has significantly higher latency at those speeds. There's only so much bandwidth a quad-core processor needs too. I'm not saying ddr4 isn't faster in this application. I'm just saying it might not offer that much more upside gain.
