The Tragic Tale of Joaquin Phoenix

- Joaquin Phoenix is one of the greatest actors living today, but also one of the most misunderstood. We all know him for his oscar winning role in The Joker, The gladiator and recently Napoleon. But behind the camera’s he’s very mysterious and not a fan of interviews, making it difficult to tell when he is joking or being serious. He has been acting ever since he was young and so deeply embodies his characters, that it’s sometimes hard to get a grasp on who he really is. This is the turbulent life of Joaquin Phoenix, and an attempt to understand the man behind the many faces.

What is your favorite Joaquin Phoenix movie?
Joker, Her, The Master
The Master
The Master was a movie I watched twice in a week
I don’t like Joaquin Phoenix, I just watch your videos
Definitely Beau is Afraid, closely tied with Her.
Now it makes sense why he was able to FULLY immerse himself in that Murray Show scene on Joker. It’s almost like he was re-creating that Letterman interview 🥺
i know right!
I can only imagine the conversations DeNiro and he might have had if they weren't both pretty much all about method acting for such serious roles. They see it as a responsibility, and as a (now retired) actor of 30+ years, I totally resonate.
True.
@@DuCinema1Does anyone know the song that plays at 9:15? My brother used to play it on the piano but I don't rember the name

His performance in Joker was so sad, disturbing and chilling that to this day I can’t watch it again. He really is a once in a lifetime actor. On another note, I just realized that River Phoenix is gone 30 years ago today. RIP.
Yup. 😓 More verification that just because someone is a good person, great soul, is kind, etc. doesn't guarantee longevity and success. The innocent and talented often die whilst the corrupt and rich live... and also, the opposite. It's completely random, all things considered.
I never understood the hype behind that movie, his version of insanity was not convincing
@@silverblue73 Somehow I think that you are lucky because the movie meant a lot for people who has issues… like me at the time. ❤
Little bit dramatic, wouldn’t you say? 😂😂
joker isnt meant to be insane tho just a man at his wits end@@silverblue73
The Joker as played by Joaquin is the best acting i've ever seen, no doubt. The entire movie you have this feeling you are watching a ticking, emotional, atomic bomb that sits there ready to blow up the entire screen. I don't know of any actor who ever gave shape to such a complex character and did that flawless and on a mind bending level.
I think he should play Harry Houdini. It legit just popped into my head. He would absolutely emmerce himself in a role like that. I'm shocked nobody hàs done it yet. I Love Joaquin Phoenix❣️
What do you mean nobody has played Harry Houdini yet? There's a really good movie about him. 2007s _Death Defying Acts_ (starring Guy Pearce and Catherine Zeta-Jones)
It's from the perspective of a little girl who's mother was a psychic & had an affair with Houdini. Guy Pearce did a GREAT job in that role. Altho, I'd definitely go see Phoenix in that role, if he ever took it on. In the meantime, I recommend you check out _Death Defying Acts_
@@reallue My mistake...thanks for the movie suggestions though. Love cinema.
Immersing himself is what got Houdini killed 😉
mAYBE HE COULD PLAY kURT cOBAIN IN A MOVIE
Then, you should do it. Houdini's was a great story.
I can't believe how that 911 dispatcher talked to him(when calling in his brother's o.d.).Biting his head off instead of trying to calm a shook-up kid!RIP River.
I can’t stand 911 operators like that. Find a different job asshole…..
I’m often surprised how rude 911 operators are. Even experienced it personally. Like wtf?
It’s sadly because they get some many calls and some of those who calls are giant assholes who think it’s funny to use 911 for own entertainment purposes.. and it is really terrible because sometimes this is gonna happen because of it…!
It’s typical with 911 operators.
Just like doctors, they're taught that if they care too much, they'll get burnt out, because it's probably true.
Joaquin is truly one of the few actors that I respect.
His name alone on a project is always enough to warrant my attention.
Does anyone know the song that plays at 9:15? My brother used to play it on the piano but I don't rember the name
@@eternal-4652i also want to know
I think Robert DeNiro did a great job playing himself in The Joker.
That's your defence? You're crazy?
@@mr.vargas5648 Defense? Lol, no, you're an idiot. DeNiro is literally being himself in that movie.
You thought so too eh?
😂How do you know who" the real Robert de nero, was it is??" To know who he really is like..
@doescancho1266 We know because he has social media, says dumb stuff, and actively proves that he is the worst.
River was also an outstanding actor. It was sad and tragic that River died so young. Joaquin is amazing. Even if the movie is bad, Joaquin would still deliver a much discussed performance, as always.
Not so much a singer though. I saw his band Aleka's Attic play a year or so before his death and it was definitely enjoyable if you were a young teen girl but not so much for a 25 year old male.
Phoenix was great in Joker, but the film and the character were not great.
Joaquin is a true artist. If he's in the film, you know you're going to meet a totally different person. Always disappearing into his characters.
There was a brief point in time where I would only watch movies with him in it because I knew that if he was in it, that it'd be truly worth watching. 😂
Yes! So many actors play exactly the same person in every film they make. (eg John Mills) but I saw several Joachim Phoenix films before I realised that it was actually the same actor in all of them. 😂.
If it wasn’t for his scar, I would not have recognised him.
NOW of course, now that I know who he is, I want to see everything he does.
Overacting is not an art
no he is just someone whose really good at manipulating other peoples emotions.... an artist builds something beautiful,
an actor is nothing without a script or a director telling him what to feel or how to feel it.
case in point, your emotions makes you believe this guy is something more than he isn't.
A sign of a superb actor is when they can portray a character in which you believe.
I haven’t watched many of his movies but I happened to watch “walk the line” and was shocked at how he can physically and mentally transform into these characters
Watch The Master. He’s always great, but that’s probably his number 3 best role behind Joker and Beau Is Afraid. Maybe even number 2, above Beau.
It was a brilliant film and he was very good in it. You felt Johnny Cash come to life and could feel his pain
He was Johnny Cash?(in Wallk the Line I'm guessing?) Damn, that was a good portrayal from him, what a life that man had and all the emotional turmoil was Felt.
I'll be perfectly honest, other than the ending and the strange dance in the bathroom, I thought his Joker film was a solid 8.5/10 simply due to the mixed messages of the director and all the misdirection to take you away from it all and make you think is it all in his head or not?
And Commodus in Gladiator, holy shit bro, most people can't forget Russell Crowe as the Maximus, but my god his Commodus was solid as a portrayal of a "real" cunt of a character.@@berylanjous6932
I mean, that is literally the role, and definition, of an actor.
@@tobietera nobody does it like Phoenix.
It was Gladiator where Joaquin Phoenix became one of my favorites. I liked him in other roles but that one put him off the charts. Walk the line was also a fantastic movie. I was heartbroken when he declared he was going to quit acting. Then I saw his... Documentary (?) about his life. He was going through a lot at that point and was trying to get back into acting. No one would hire him at that point. When it came out that he was going to be the Joker, "how perfect" was my words. And he is the best Joker ever.
No one is
That's debatable
Not as good as Heath Ledger.
We love him. He sees what needs to change and he is a voice for the VOICELESS
Absolutely!
...and they barely do mention it here... A joke...
THAT is his true legacy. I'm 66 and am still waking up to some of the atrocities that we as a society overlook (e.g. factory farms). Joaquin sees them and calls them out. He is a leader.
Finally! I don't see many film channels talking about Joaquin 😭 Thank you for highlighting one of the greatest actors we have right now who happens to be one of my favorites✨
I've always wondered why, he seems to be an incredibly private person
Does anyone know the song that plays at 9:15? My brother used to play it on the piano but I don't rember the name
He is very expressive in his face. He has a sense of mystery in him
This man is a true gift to us. I often feel that his acting shows feelings that I feel on the inside but never let out. Every performance gives me the chills because we see something no actor has ever shown us before.
Also, I always had the impression that he was a lone wolf because of his past and his approach to his work. When I learned that he and Rooney Mara are a couple, I was really happy for both of them because they seem like to peas in a pot.
Peas are in a pod. It's two peas in a pod. It's just a public service I'm compelled to do.
@@existentialhangover1124 believe it or not, but the public really doesn't care about a missing letter in a perfectly understandable sentence. But great that you yourself feel better now that you were able to correct a random persons TH-cam-comment. Good for you 😄

he is not the only one he is trying to take over his brothers legacy who was the real deal
@@aryalogo6624 You don't think Joaquin can act? Hmm.
That's deep
@@cherylsmith4826 LOL, it's just the truth. He's that great of an actor.
Sorry, but... gimme a break. 🙄🤮
He is one of the best actors in history and didn't even graduate from acting school at all. What an alien...
If you look at German actors in German television you'll wonder how any of them graduated from acting school so this isn't surprising at all.
The best actors are always naturals.
You don t graduate, they graduate you. School s overrated in most cases*. You can be a natural. * except STEM.
When he speaks, I deeply feel that we are all brothers and sisters, human and animal. An extraordinary actor, a humble man, and a role model for us all. Much love and peace ✌️
I wish there were more people like him. I see only hate and absurd abuse.
It made me cry that they named their son River. What a brilliant soul Joaquin is! Great video 💕
You cannot just watch a Joaquin Phoenix movie without going down that slide of insanity with him.
How true
I love that man. He’s so talented and so genuine. You can feel how good his heart is.
Does anyone know the song that plays at 9:15? My brother used to play it on the piano but I don't rember the name
Joaquin Phoenix is an amazing actor and one of my favorites! His movies are very immersive and relatable! Such a wonderful tribute to name his son after his brother River. It’s obvious with Joaquin’s battle with his own addiction problems that River’s death was a very painful loss for him. May River R.I.P. and may God bless Joaquin to continue to succeed in overcoming his battle with addiction with His love and mercy❤
The way you narrated the whole story and how you paused and soothed before saying RIVER PHEONIX..... Man that spike of happiness was real!! You've earned another subscriber.

I just love him. I truly believe that he is the greatest actor of all time! I hope Hollywood treats him with grace and admiration. If he's in a movie, I will be there.
My dad took me to see 'Walk the line' when it came out and I'm so glad he did. He introduced me to the man of mystery who is Joaquin Phoenix. I became an instant fan of his after seeing his riveting performance as he portrayed Johnny Cash and watched all of his movies after that. Although method acting can be very dangerous, every performance that comes out of him is masterful. I really enjoyed this video you brought to us it was so well put together.
My no 1 actor. He doesn’t impersonate Napoleon, he transforms into his very own Napoleon. Despite the age difference, despite the brooding nature, he makes his Napoleon as believable as he made his Joker. What an actor.
If you think you knew Napoleon, watch Joaquin’s Napoleon. Beneath that General charisma was a very angry, multi dimensional, complicated character which only Joaquin can bring them out. You will feel his turbulence, his anguish, his regrets at every war and love scenes.
@@k.vn.kYesss. Love him in Napoleon!
Did you watch the movie? He must be great in Napoleon
@@norm-bb3bb i got early access and yes it’s one of the best this year

He is my favorite actor. He brings authenticity to every role he plays. He is brilliant and captivating. I’m glad he made it out of the cult. I’m so saddened every time I think about his beautiful brother.
I hope he watches this video. It was well made and shows how much understanding some one has of his work and person. I could see him smiling to this tribute.
Did not expect this to make me as emotional as it did. God, I love him so much.
I love, GOD more!
He has always been an enigma. I have enjoyed him as a actor. His facial expressions and his mad acting skills can leave one in awe, inspired or uncomfortable depending on the role. Just saying though all these actors wanting to play the "Joker" usually ends up seriously mental afterwards. Heath Ledger for one.
Does anyone know the song that plays at 9:15? My brother used to play it on the piano but I don't rember the name
For me, the slipping from "good son" to the helpless insanity of the joker is the real stuff. He absolutely put the work in for the role and it's haunting me. Crying while laughing. Afraid and smiling. Polar opposite feelings portrayed at the same time, without it feeling like he is acting. I am taken by his work in Joker, he deserves all the accolades..
Gladiator was my favorite movie for a decade, because the villain was so believable that it made Russel crowes characters challenge that much deeper.
the fact that Ducinema could translate the depth of such multilayered genius is an art of its own, how gifted!
He's easily one of the best actors.
Seriously, take a good look at Joaquin's reaction after Russell Crowe acknowledged him at 7:23 , the man is so intense, so vulnerable, sensitive and raw. I don't know how to put this, it's like he's never really acting because he's always himself or is it the other way around, he's never really himself because he's always acting?
Been a big fan of his since Signs, where he made the move to me. Her was another level of how his characters elevated a film. I find it kind of beautiful that he finally achieved that ultimate prize as if he is carrying the ghost of his beloved lost brother.
Reading your comment I remembered he was in that movie. I liked it honestly, I'm not a sci-fi kinda movie guy but that was one of the first that I truly liked. I was younger but still the movie was good overall.
It seems great minds think alike! We're working on our own Joaquin Phoenix documentary that will come out in a few weeks. Good stuff.
And bravo on the packaging ;)
Looking forward to it brother! Joaquin has morphed himself into so many different shapes and forms that I opted to give a new interpretation to your inspired packaging. Keep it up and may The Dodford Paradox continue 🫡
He already MADE it... He's Iconic 💯🔥🔥
He’s been a favorite of mine since 8mm. It’s been awesome watching his rise.
Same. I loved him in 8mm and that's when I was like... I love watching this man.
not if i see you first, lost my brother about two years ago, i understand his pain, and his problems, joker reflects well on the mental state of that sort of loss
I loved him in signs and his role of the comforting brother within a home of family who just lost their mother was his most tender character, I always believed his name in that film his name was Merril, very similar to Miracle and his swing away literally saved his family's life.
It is a crime that he didn't win best actor for Gladiator
100 percent agreed, that was when I realized Joaquin was truly in the upper deck of actors.
Best supporting actor
The 911 dispatcher was so rude. Calm down or hand the phone to someone else. Yikes. It was his brother dead. So sad.
Didn't know he was there wen it happened 🤔
Easily one of the most talented actors ever to have graced this earth. What a genius. ❤
Does anyone know the song that plays at 9:15? My brother used to play it on the piano but I don't rember the name
Most of my favorite movies star Joaquin. Even his "mockumentary" was amazing! But for real, his Joker performance was something else. That made him #1 in my book.
he is sometimes hard to watch, the vulnerability is so raw that it is uncomfortable. Genius actor, the Joker blew me away....his character loveable, awkward, despicable...umami of cinema
Eyes are the windows of the soul.
Been a fan of Joaquins since Gladiator.
Where I saw something beautiful, painful, tragic in his eyes. Didn't understand back then as a kid watching him and Russell.
In his voice, his acting.
For years watched and enjoyed his many roles. Haven't seen Napolean.
When about a year ago streaming something on River Phoenix, Viper room. I never knew about. Never knew they were brothers.
And how he tried to save, revive River. It made me physically ill. That he had to go through that.
And that some of us can still see River in there.
Or how the Joker role is fitting. Cus Joaquin can access those real horrors and emotions for the Dari role.
Its crazy how he looks EXACTLY like his dad. Meanwhile River looked very similar to his mom.
I'm glad Joaquin was able to comeback from some pretty horrible $hit growing up and then being there for his brother's death..
He gives himself to his performance much like River... I wish we could've gotten to see them together. They would've been a powerhouse together. Joaquin has the same views on the earth like River did. It's a shame River was the whole house bread maker up until his death.. All the pressure just made him want to escape.. but then again his death also sounds a weird fishy how someone made him a random mixture of hundreds of dollars worth of drugs in a cup and his most doped out friend was told to give it to him. Tragic. Loved Joaquin's speech. They cut out the part that made me cry about how we as people just take and take resources and animals.
RIP River
They did shows together as kids but would have loved to see them together as adults
Well now Arlyn Phoenix refers to Joaquin as the “patriarch” of their family.
River dead and Joaquin replaced him as the breadwinner.
I wish his sister Rain was as nice but I've had the displeasure of meeting her at a house party and I found out how strong her opinions on eating meat were. As I was eating a burger. Joaquin was only 15 at that time.
I hope Napoleon with him is going to be good
I'm also hyped afff
He was incredible in joker, it's not just the big obvious things like the different laughs, it's the little things like when he's running down the corridor and he runs like he's got clown shoes on, that's when i realised just how good he is.
He came to a pizza restaurant that I was working at back in 1898. he was doing a movie in Petaluma CA. He was so humble, and just a genuine person. I feel honored to cross paths with one of the best actors of our time.
I call bs.
Nobody is alive born in that year!
100% INFP....such an amazing actor, who understands emotions and exactly how to play it into his role.
In The Master he gives probably one of the greatest performances of all time
Joachin Phoenix is my favourite actor. He is a very complex and unique person, and takes his craft very seriously. Thank you for this amazing video.
Thank you for this video. What a ride 😢❤
props to the editor and the writer of this video. its just amazing.
I loved him in the joker that’s my favorite role of his and I loved him in HER , his vulnerability and softness in that movie was touching
Jaoquin is among the best leading men in Hollywood today . He is a true craftsmen and practices his craft like no other . I appreciate that he maintains his privacy and because of that can maintain Grace both as a performer and a person .
Agreed!
I have always been a fan of Joaquin, I think the first time I saw him act in anything was Gladiator, but seeing him in Quills (one of my favourite films), Signs, and The Village, I knew I was a fan. I also loved Her and Walk the Line, and of course he absolutely nailed the Joker. He deserved to win that Oscar finally, though I think that most of his roles deserved to win.
I have been skipping the Oscars for a long time now, like, the last one I went out of my way to watch was when Return of the King won Best Picture...but I made a point to watch the one where Joaquin won for Joker, and his acceptance speech had me sobbing by the end of it, and still whenever I hear it, I am brought to tears.
He deserves all the awards, praise, and acclaim, and thank you for this video! He is a complex person, an outstanding actor, and so deeply emotional and talented...I didn't know they were making another Joker, but I'm very excited to see him play the role again! Apparently it's a musical and Lady Gaga is playing Harley!
Leaving my comment here but I just have watched all episodes from the "Actors" playlist. Mind-blowing - thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. The way how you're putting them together, the story telling is outstanding. Nothing I have seen in a looong while. Please don't stop. It was a short break I needed from all of the mundane things but most importantly, it was a realization that I still love cinema, movies and why I was watching movies like crazy as a teenager and young adult. Thank you.
So I'm right about him: He's an absolutely fantastic actor.
I think Joaquin phoenix should have got the OSCAR in Gladiator ❤
A wonderfully edited and produced video. Wow.
No real mention of how good looking Phoenix is. Part of why he is handsome is the deep compassion and empathy it takes to choose to be a vegan and to remain true to that commitment. He doesn't have extraordinary, or unbelievable, good looks but a 'guy you could meet in the real world' vibe. It's like he is lit from within by his talent, kindness and mercy.
Agreed a beautiful hurt soul
his pallor is not handsome
@@Elena-er7zp Really? You know that's a makeup artist(s) and director(s) collab, right? Pffft.

Joaquin Phoenix is such a wonderful person and a wonderful actor.
Every film he is in turns to gold. He’s brilliant. Simply brilliant.
After his portrayal of Commodus I had feelings of hate towards him for years after every time seeing his face, only great actors can leave that kind of lasting impression on you.
I like Heath’s joker better, but now seeing that clip again “can you call me Joker?” I understand his version more.

idk why i got insane amount of chills the way you mentioned he named his son after his elder brother. just the tone made me extremely emotional, must've been when you mentioned how fond he is of his brother at the beginning, the build-up to highlight the significance of joaquin and river
When I first learned of Joaquin as River's younger brother, I really didn't know what to think of him. He’s truly a marvellous actor. Seems like a good human too.
That 911 operator was a jerk! I can't even imagine having to face that and plead for help to someone telling me to calm down & if i can't pass the phone off to someone who can!
Until they've made sure the correct help is on the way to the correct location as fast as possible _nothing_ else matters right? What is the actual purpose and most important reason of the emergency call? Immediate help. I'm sure as soon as that is secured they can be VERY supportive. What if trying to calm someone down to explain would take 30+ seconds (a pure guess from the responder at that time) and telling them "you need to hand the phone to someone else right now" when you know they're not alone, takes 5 seconds. I think it's INSANE to call someone a jerk over that.
Joaquin is an amazing actor. He deserves all the praise in this video. Great job putting this together.
No mention of Signs. He sold the role of passionate, impressionable, lost, older little bro with a good heart perfectly.

I adore Joaquin Phoenix as a man, an actor, a vegan and an animal activist. He is gifted with a huge heart. I can only ever wish him the best in all he does in life.

@@Schrodingers_Kat His sister Rain is the combative type of vegan. I met her at a house party in Gainesville when Joaquin was about 15. I was eating McDonald's at the kitchen table and she walked in and saw me. We spent the next 30-odd minutes arguing over eating meat and she eventually went outside in a huff. She could have just ignored me and enjoyed the party but no, she had to go on a crusade. Joaquin just rode his skateboard around town and hassled no one.
It took Joker for me to pay closer attention to Joaquin to see what extraordinary magnificent actor he is. I watched every film he played and every time his performance is stelar. My favorites are Her, Joker and Beau is afraid. He is the literally me for me.

Mr Phoenix knows how to pick interesting roles & act them.
Commodus and Napoleon are 2 of the most interesting people from history to me.
Heath Ledgers Joker was the best acted character to date when Joaquin chose to play the Joker.
I wonder how Commodus would have been as an emporer if his sister didn't kill his lover and attempt to kill him so early into his reign.
He had the support of the people by more than any other after paying all Roman men, he funded the most games and personally fought in the Colosseum 100s of times.
He had the support of his army due to pulling out of Germania.
And he was the first son of an emperor to become emperor in the ~200 years of Roman empire, son of the Marcus Aurelius no less.
