Because of how long it takes to produce one episode, I am starting to taper my expectations about the frequency that I can release them but I think that means the silver lining is that it gives more people time to discover the channel. Just finding this now, thanks to a friend. I was working at sea in ships bobbing around just like yours when this dropped. I cannot tell you how well-done this is, and I truly appreciate how much time it has taken you to make it happen. Years ago I started a historic build project that got put on hold, and it is a true labor of love for me. Seeing yours has renewed my desire to see it through. I hope you are able to continue, but even if it is years later, I will be there for the next video.

Never would have dreamed to see someone be so thorough as you. This is so cool, and i wish for more episodes. The historical context throughout your building process is very refreshing. Love it! I also think you hit on a key feature that is missing from cs - the real passage of time. I always wanted to start a city in 1700 and keep it expanding as technology advances and the needs of citizens changed over the centuries. Like in transport fever 2!
This is very well done! The intro was fantastic. Cities Skylines can be such a good medium to tell stories and share history (even if it's an alternate history). The editing is also very good. You must have put a lot of time into it. And a perfectly timed release with Thanksgiving! I will be following this series!
Thanks, I agree, Cities Skylines is a great platform for storytelling. I think the story I'm ultimately trying to tell here is the story of why our cities turned out the way they did. Why is the rent so damn high? Has it always been that way? What were the historical forces that drove development? At whose expense? Which decisions left lasting effects that are still shaping our lives today? It's a meaningful story to tell, I think!
Loved this episode and the care you take with building and detailing, as well as the accompanying graphics and the narration and the little history lesson! Hopefully there will be a second part soon!

Thank you! Oddly I haven't been able to find many maps from early Providence. I'd also add that as far as I understand, Providence was never intended to be a secular place so much as a tolerant place. It was founded by puritans who disagreed with other puritans. Although I am not finding much material on early Providence, I have a wealth of urban planning/development material on Newport RI, which was at one time the fourth largest city in the colonies!

First of all: I liked the video. I think taking inspiration from Franklin is a good idea. My only criticism would maybe be the liberal use of mud. Also I'm a bit confused by the "post-medieval" part. Is that meant to use "medieval" as another word for "low quality" or "simple"?
Hi, so glad you're liking it! I stand by the mud haha. I think traditionally these settlements would have been very muddy/dusty places. All roads and common pathways of this time would have been little more than overtrodden soil. Mud was also needed for pigs to root around in. Accounts of early New Amsterdam describe it as basically a muddy pit at the tip of Manhattan. About the post-medieval architectural tradition, this is an excerpt from the book: "The early colonists arriving in the New World from Europe brought with them the prevailing architectural styles and building practices of their native countries. At first these were of late Medieval inspiration, for the new classicism of the Renaissance had not yet spread beneath the grandest palaces and mansions of their homelands. Indeed, most Colonial dwellings built during the 1600s lacked all Medieval decorative detailing and might be classified as folk houses if they did not so strongly reflect-in form and structure rather than stylistic detail-the distinctive building traditions of their countries of origin." McAlester, Virginia Savage. A Field Guide to American Houses: The Definitive Guide to Identifying and Understanding America's Domestic Architecture . Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group. Kindle Edition. BTW, What the author is referring to when using the term folk houses, are simple dwellings constructed by the people who lived in them from locally acquired resources, lacking any formal style or ornamentation but yet adhering to traditional cultural building traditions of the dominant culture. The story is made up but based on real events! Matthew Gray is a stand in for Henry Hudson and some of the early director generals of the colonies. Lady Locke broadly represents the interest of major company investors back in England/Holland. Arcadia/Lockeport is kind of a stand in for a variety of places in the Northeast.
Both groups have been victimized in a similar fashion. I probably will not speak much about the suffering of groups unrelated to American urban development in this series but yes, this is a valid point.
