Sunday noon, WGN in the '80s featured detective-private eye classics, I think it was called "Sunday Noon Mysteries" or something like that. Never missed them: Sherlock Holmes, Charlie Chan, Bulldog Drummond, Dick Tracy... all the great '40s movies. Owning the dvd set for several years, I've spent many a stormy Sunday afternoon curled up with a good book, a hot drink, and the cat on my legs watching this and the other Rathbone-Bruce movies. Better than a valium for relaxing.
I'm working my way through all of the basil rathbone sherlock holmes I can find. This one is excellent, for me it's only second to hound of the baskervilles. Quite deep and more cryptic than any of the rest. Basil is undoubtedly the quintessential holmes, simply the best.
jim ewok well, to be sure, the world isn’t perfect, but when Rathbone made that speech, my mother was sitting at the back of buses in Alabama. Women were not allowed to work any real jobs. There was little help for the poor. If you had an illness or disease, it was a death sentence, not only because you couldn’t afford to pay for care, but the technology didn’t exist to help... if you had cancer, you were probably dead. College opened up for poor and middle class people. It’s not so unusual to see mixed couples. Asians are accepted as people... in fact, China, Japan and South Korea have seen a major renaissance not seen in a thousand years.... India is advancing... the Soviet block fell. To be honest, it’s really looking pretty good out there. I think ole’ Rathbone hit the nail on the head! 😁 Give it another 100 years and who knows where it will all lead!
Good movie, but how did the composer of the ritual know the chessboard floor would survive the centuries? And why not cash in on the royal grant straight away back in the 16th century? The clock repeatedly striking 13 was also unexplained. Despite this, the solution was neat.
I love how was lastrahd gets locked in and he could not Force the door open that man is huge it was another Sherlock Holmes movie where they were trying to bust down the door to big London cops it was so funny and then Sherlock opens the door that's the one with the creeper sometimes it just seems a little played out like that I mean it's not real at all not even attempt to be real
Just noticed Brunton had a cat in his arms when he was talking to doctor Watson in the room where lady Clarinda was or dr. Watson thought it was the room The flaky girl
Why would anyone stand so close with a pistol two inches from his chest just doesn't seem logical at all being that holems is very very smart that's why he snapped it off so quickly great movie over all love it all
They are normal men there. But there might be a murder amongst them got somebody please make up the mind And later on in the movie he presses how normal and perfect they are but then again this still a murderer running around killing people somebody really didn't think a lot of these things through when they were right in this movie it's all over the place if you think about it
They should have called this one when the clock strikes 13 seems like a lot of people were dying when it's struck 13 but nobody investigated that if that clock has the power to bring death that would be a movie in itself now wouldn't it
And listen to the wind as they find Jeffrey Musgrave those leaves would have been scattered to the four I'm going to be and nobody heard him scratching nose pile of leaves up another bad writing I love the movies don't get me wrong but if you hand pick them hit pretty silly but I do love all the Sherlock movies could have a field day tearing it apart but it's all good just roll with the punches
I Lmao at Holmes' words at the end when he and Watson are driving away.. Holmes says about there being a new type of ppl on the earth where greed is dead and ppl are more caring toward each other. Not in those exact words but u catch my drift.. 😂 You have to laugh. The world is ever more greedy by the hour, not to mind the year. Brilliant episode though. Holmes is his usual imperious self while Watson is a stupid as ever.
Slim Reaper I find that I must respectfully disagree. There are more charities today, more social programs and more lessons on the respect of human rights than ever before. The real problem is that as the population continues to increase, there are more and more in need. You’re right when you state that greed is everywhere, but kindness is there too.... always fighting greed and selfishness. Sometimes winning and sometimes losing. There are all sorts of programs for the poor that never existed when Rathbone made that speech. I know what you mean though... we are nowhere near any real utopia. I guess in this life we never will be... isn’t it fun trying? 😁
@@TheLocoUnion well said pal.. I can agree with all u said there but I suppose I've become very cynical over the past few yrs and I find it tough to changey thinking on the Political classes and what they're all standing for these days.. I do hear every word u say though my friend.. Take care and have a great 🎄 Xmas. Hope I haven't put my foot in it mate.. 😂
Slim Reaper thank you so much and no you haven’t put your foot in it at all! You’re speaking from your heart and that’s not wrong at all! Merry Christmas to you too my friend! 👍🏼
It's pretty sad the way they wrote Dr. Watson after the first and second BR-NG movies. He was an intelligent man, not a buffoon, though I enjoy the movies anyway, lol.
One of the best Sherlock Holmes movies ever! Thanks so much for posting this.
Another great Sherlock Holmes movie....with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce..

Check out the Scarlett claw.
The music is
Awesome
Throughout all of the series great great music incredible sounds
Most excellent commentary by Holmes at the end of the episode.
Looking at this version...it appears to be the Magic Mushroom version with swaying walls and swimming floors. Thanks.
Alfred Brunton (Halliwell Hobbes) " I love things that have no meaning."
Nice. I had not seen this one before. It seems the other 5 films are in such high rotation no other exist.
There's 14 of them. All on u tube.
"Aye, but uh, where do I go?" Over to the playing board like everybody else!
To the side of the playing board!
this is one of the best Sherlock Holmes movies with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson
I for one, love Rathbones speeches at the conclusion of these films!
it was odd, huh? wistful n hopeful n idealist/socialist in the middle of ww2.

Ou..goosebumps on that one.

Hypo's we're friggin extremely large and they hurt horribly
great
Just seen a complete set of first edition sherlock holmes about £1500!
In a lot of these films it's always the Carotid artery that's almost cut or is cut
Just noticed Brunton had a cat in his arms when he was talking to doctor Watson in the room where lady Clarinda was or dr. Watson thought it was the room
The flaky girl
If only Holmes' final words about greed were true. But they could be, if enough of us chose to help make them a reality.
Give her a sedative---the go-to panacea for all sorts of ailments.
Some weird video aberrations. ?? Was that in the original filming or from TH-cam upload?

Rathbone and Bruce; can anyone come up with a better classic Holmes and Watson? I think not!
Basil Rathbone is Sherlock Homes. No other actor is even close.
Stay where you are all of you😄😄😄😄😄🤣🤣
what is with the funny movement/pulling? almost like someone recorded it with a hand held camera?
Yes , I've just started watching , and have noticed the same thing !
ive started watching the other old Sherlock movies on TH-cam, can watch it on my TV, the others are better quality.
Thanks, I was having a few brandies and thought it was me.
I found a better version of the film here: th-cam.com/video/dV0n5Lh6zJM/w-d-xo.html

At 1 45 Peter Lawford s screen debut
Hell no
Peter Lawford. He's not English. Love these old movies.
1:06:48 I'm glad he didn't live to see the 80's and beyond.
Who knows what countries rathbone and Bruce were really born in
By jove he did write something🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
You wouldn't believe the things that I know 😄
Young Peter Lawford @ 2:25
Peter Lawford he's not in this movie
@@stevesetek8861 Not billed, but look @ 2:17 to 2:24 or so.
Actually Steve, he's at the bar (scene) up to 3"08 mins into movie.
That's not him
Why did Holmes say take it away. Take it away. He was taking about the girl not the bird. Thats a major screw up and they left it in the film
“Blud”! “Kawk”! “Blud”!!
I would have been all over that grant. I would have been a stern but fair master. 😂

John Scott.... Their is total love between Holmes and Watson.
