    Ken Smith. That tone is super tight, articulate and solid, the high register sounds very clear yet it still has this sweet warmth to it.

    Ken Smith basses have such a sweet tone!
    Many people may pick Fodera because they’re popular nowadays, but no bass can match the Smith sound.
    -KS for me!

    Did you know that the first 32 Smith Basses have been built by Vinny ? :) I used to own a Smith Black Tiger in the early 2000's but switched to Fodera in 2006 ... to me the Smith has a more "Character" that you can hear straight (especially the Slapsound) and I think there's a good reason Gospel & R&B Players have played them for ages.... the Fodera is more on the Fender tone side which suits my style better.

    • @jcherrymusicworld
      @jcherrymusicworld  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s so cool! Thanks for sharing that piece of history! I agree the Smith has a lot character whereas the Fodera stays neutral in a sense - really related to a Fender J bass.

    I really loved what you had to say about these basses. I'm a Fodera owner and I got mine after 20 to 25 years of really wanting one. Spot on with everything you had to say about these basses, and you're right- there's kind of no going back now. The price is high, but it's an investment in the future of a serious musician. Granted, I've seen a lot done with a lot less, but if the opportunity strikes to have an instrument built for you, you should absolutely do it - at least when you know what you want out of an instrument, and you're fairly developed in your playing style. Huge props for using a great track with a great bass part (on every version of that recording, including the Live in DC thing!), and great playing on your part. That song gave people enough space to actually listen to the instrument and form an opinion.

    • @jcherrymusicworld
      @jcherrymusicworld  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your feedback! I’m glad you caught my drift and I’m hoping it was helpful for others too. It’s a different ball game going into boutique basses - and I agree you have to know what you want out of them or else you can waste huge amounts of cash. My intent here was just to state facts and provide clarity. I was once a guy who was closed minded about these instruments but I then began to understand the importance of having a good sound and what great instruments can do to help with that. It changed my perspective forever.

    Grettings from Costa Rica . I had 3 basses and I sold two of them, a Fender American Standard jazz bass 5 strings and a Yamaha TRB 6 strings, to get the enough money , but it wasn’t enough, I had to use my credit card, to buy a Fodera Emperor Standard, because after to used that first time the Fodera in the store, I thought “ I need this bass in my life “ . This kind of “boutique “ basses don’t make us better bass players, but The sound and the feeling are amazing . Is like drive a HYUNDAI vs an AUDI , both cars can take you at the same place , but someone drive a Hyundai and Someone else drive in an AUDI. I love both basses the Fodera and Ken Smith

      Yo! I wrestle as well. It’s kind of hard to pick between the two. Funny enough the Fodera basically have the same tone woods (maple and alder) that of a Fender J bass, so sonically it’s basically a modern J bass. J bass basses are the most versatile instruments IMO. Oh and you can’t never go wrong with a Yamaha!! The quality of those are amazing, enjoy!!

    Fodera has become a trend! As simple as that! You can hear some bass videos with your eyes closed, thinking its a jazz bass with different pickups or preamp, and you open your eyes, its a 10.000 dollar Fodera! But you listen to any bass video with your eyes closed, you know 1000% its a Ken Smith!
    Fodera sounds like other cheaper basses, but NOTHING sounds like a Ken Smith! 100 knobs on a Fodera, still sounds cheap, 4-5 knobs on a Ken Smith, sounds like a Ken smith! And honestly, Fodera are only a hype mostly by " jazz & fusion" players... Tobias has WAY more tonal unique character than Foderas... And anone who disagrees needs to get their ears checked! :)

    • @jcherrymusicworld
      @jcherrymusicworld  ปีที่แล้ว

      The hefty price tags with Fodera really come from the overhead cost. They are amazingly built and quality is top notch. I believe Fodera’s are for the person who has a dream bass in their head that wants executed…the electronics are very neutral - almost an acoustic quality. It definitely doesn’t have the tonal characteristics like some other basses that defines the instrument.

I picked up a Roscoe and it just spoke to me, was like putting on an old comfortable pair of shoes, the sound the feel everything was amazing. I went in there thinking I’d just look around or maybe buy some strings but dropped a large chunk of change and left with that Roscoe. Liked that one so much I had them build two more for me. I still play some of my other bass’s but my Roscoe’s are my go-to favorites. I can totally relate where you are coming from. I’ve never had a chance to play a Fodera but have play a few Ken Smith’s (I live in the Philly area not far from Ken’s shop), and they are great bass’s they guy really knows what he’s doing!

    I'm really surprised at how many chose the KS over the Fodera. I've emersed myself in the different sounds of basses for the last couple of years. The KS sounds wonderful. Smooth, clean, precise. The problem for me is that if you weren't allowed to see which bass was being played, I'm not sure you could pick out the KS out of a crowd over any other well-made high-end bass.
    The reason I like the Fodera, and MTD is because of their unique scooped sound; just like you can pick out a P Bass (mine is a '96 Mexican made), or a Dingwall, or an Alembic without looking at the bass.
    That's how a bass should be chosen; because of its unique sound, not just it's quality of sound.
    Enjoyed the video. Subscribed.

    Thanks for this video. For me it's the Ken Smith in this comparison. Fodera looks and feels great, but to my ears I never really found it to be very distinctive/unique sounding. It's always amazing to hear and see Smith basses. I traded in my 2001 Smith BSR (among others) to enable me to purchase my boyhood dream, a custom Alembic Series 2. And even though this Alembic truly is the best bass I've ever owned, I miss the Ken Smith more than any other bass I've ever sold. If I ever get the chance, I'll buy one back. Great story about boutique basses, I feel the same way. It is so amazing to not only see and hear, but to actually feel the workmanship as soon as you pick up your instrument and in every note that you play.

    Ken Smith, Ken Smith, Ken Smith. The tone is amazing. Fodera is uh... Ok, but Ken Smith is inspirational, on another level and how does he get that B string at 34 inches? I'm gonna start saving my money... it's a must have and 6 strings too. I also am playing a Yamaha TRB 1006J... and it's nice, but Kenny Smith is my future! Nice video.

      Yep, 34 inch scale! I’ve never experienced a low “B” as tight as a KS on any bass. I believe it’s everything from the brass nut, bridge and woods he specifically uses…anyways thanks for viewing!

    Both are killer basses, i think the difference is mostly for the player in terms of comfort and playabillity (neck shape/weight etc...) and it's a very personnal thing. They sounds a little different but not that much because of the active electronics. I think i would buy only one of them (also because of their prices) in addition of a passive P-Bass and J-bass that sounds the opposite way. But man, they're gorgeous instruments.

    As a Fodera owner I will say the following. For the style and tone required for the song you used to demonstrate both of them, the Smith was way much in tune with what was required for it. I am with you regarding what you had to say about boutique basses, my first one was a Keith Roscoe and all of my defects in my playing were so much more apparent, it became a great tool to fix them to the best of my technic capabilities and to improve of that aspect as well. Nice video...

      Goes to show it really just depends on genre and style. Both are amazing basses and for example I prefer the slap tone on the Fodera than Smith for certain things etc. Thanks for your honest feedback!

  • @PjRjHj

    With this particular example, the Ken Smith gets the roses but both are distinct, aesthetically pleasing basses. Nothing is overrated about these two leading names. I almost bought a Ken Smith 20 years ago but went down the Wal route, another fabulous bass but a very different beast to Smith and Fodera (even if Fodera has made a couple Wal-dera hybrids).

    I went thru the same situation! After I got my KS! I only can play another boutique.. If I play another only fender gives me the sound I look for jazz bass. What are the electronics of fodera?

    • @jcherrymusicworld
      @jcherrymusicworld  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Fender is staple for that Jazz bass sound. The Fodera has the Mike Pope Preamp: 3 band eq, passive/active switch, single/dual coil pickup switch and mid range (hi/lo) selector switch. It’s a very versatile preamp even more than the Smith, but the Smith just have a tone that is niche to perfection.

    The regular TRB can’t compare to the boutique basses BUT the TRB5P2/TRB6P2 is EVERY bit as good as any bass out there (if you can find one). I would pick a good Ken Smith first, the Yamaha TRB5P2, then the Fodera. I would pick a lot of basses over a Fodera (MTD, Roscoe, Sadowsky, a banjo 😂)…

    Great video! If you are a discerning player, the boutique/custom bass world is for you I think. However if you get your sound and create music in other instruments, that's also just as valid! Jaco played a basic Fender Jazz, took the frets out and changed the world of bass and music with it. Ok so here's my opinion on the two basses. Both luthiers build instruments at the highest level of craftsmanship. And with these two companies, there is a sense of linage because Vinney Fodera worked for Ken Smith and built the first Smith basses. They have different ways of building to achieve their sound. The Smith basses are built to where the wood is a neutral platform and the voice is created by the electronics. To me overall it's a more compressed sound, and very even. But the sound is very much what it is. You know it's Smith from a mile away and they don't deviate from that sound. For the R&B/Gospel thing, smoother Jazz, and music like that with very low action and a light touch.....they're killer. The Foderas (especially with the splittable dual coil pickups) are more versatile overall. They are built with the wood tone showing through the electronics which gives you a very wide tonal, and dynamic range. When you dig in and play harder they respond and get louder without reaching that ceiling where the bass starts self compressing. They can get sounds of other basses depending on what you have them build. That's the other thing about Fodera. When you come to them they don't push any philosophies on you. They ask you what YOU want to sound like. Smith builds what they build. In the end it's up to you to decide what is better and works for you. No right or wrong.

      Very great outlook and summary on this man! I think you hit the nail on the head. It really boils down to what you’re looking for sonically. From my experience with these instruments they’re amazing and accentuate your playing (once you got the “touch”). I use to play many mass produced basses and they were great but these boutique’s allowed my “voice” to shine - transparent and articulate from low to high. Thanks for your feedback!

    • @zechariahfrink3707
      @zechariahfrink3707 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jcherrymusicworld For sure man! I can talk/nerd out about this kinda stuff all day lol! I know the feeling you describe of your voice coming through. When I got my custom Fodera it demanded me to stuff to my game, and also make changes to my other parts of my setup to adjust to it. I switched amp and string companies, and practiced and played in a completeley different way. That being said I still have and love playing my other basses. I got my Fender p bass with the heavy/stiff feeling LaBella flat wounds for that old school "Jamerson" type sound. I got my Fender fretless jazz and fretted to cover alot of stuff too. So it all depends on the music I'm playing and that dictates what instrument fits best. My Fodera does to go many gigs since I designed it to be super versatile.

    • @jcherrymusicworld
      @jcherrymusicworld  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@zechariahfrink3707 Fender will be fender period! I still have my vintage P for when I’m looking for that authentic vintage vibe - nothing will replace that. I agree the Fodera is very versatile and modern and IMO why the Fender will always be here to stay because it has that classic sound no bass can match exactly. It can be very gritty and greasy when need be. The modern basses are more Hi- Fi/ warm but the Fender can be a bit more edgy IMO.
