    Our final look at this lens as we have been using it for the past 2 months. With 2 big trips under our belt this lens has been a fantastic all in one lens. Sure its not perfect, but being able to get the shot for the majority of us is the most important thing. I was able to get all the shots that i wanted with one lens. What else could you ask for, especially at this price. A definitely winner!!

    Great review Greg. I have been using this lens on both my Nikon D7200 and D5600 crop sensor cameras for 8 months now. For an amateur like me it produces excellent snapshot quality photos, sharp, and good colour texture too. It is compact in size, and for a 400mm zoom, lightweight. Easy to handhold and carry. I get 27mm to 600mm on my nikon apscs and love this lens as an absolute all rounder. At its low price point it is fantastic value. Your comments about watching the shutter speed are spot on Greg, and I will pay more attention to that. Thank you

    This is the review I needed. I shoot lots of kids doing lots of activities. I need to shoot wide angle and then quickly turn to extreme telephoto, literally within a second. I don't need extreme high quality like I get from my Canon L-Series lenses, but I do need clean sharp images to work with. This lens seems to have enough sharpness to produce the quality I need. 99% of what I do will be viewed on a screen, so this lens may just be what I'm looking for. I normally have 2 full frame cameras hanging on my shoulders when I shoot so I can get a large range of focal lengths. This lens would allow me to carry only one APS-C camera and capture everything I need.
    Thanks for posting. It was very helpful in making my decision.

    I have this lens, and its my go to lens for any time I want to have fun with my R7 or 7D MK2. I even mount it on my M50 sometimes (its too big for the M50). Far from perfect but always good. The perfect travel lens. Very good at the beach if you don’t want to change lenses. Just remember that sand can get into things if your not careful.
    Also I usually double the shutter speed rule (1/400 shutter speed for 400mm becomes 1/800) when using APSC cameras. Your R7 can give great results at ISO 6400 even 12800.
    Very nice video! Hope to go to Alaska someday.

    Nice video. You are on the mark that the type of lenses we choose is a function of what we use our cameras for. I have had this lens for 5-6 years. I use it for vacations, one lens only activity. And it has done the job. So much so that even though I recently went to the full frame R6 Mii, I took this lens on a recent multi week vacation trip. Am currently processing my pictures and am very happy with the results of the camera/lens combination. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Thanks for informative video. I just got a tamron 18-400mm lens & t8i camera used from family of man I photographed with for long time. It wasn’t used much at all due to his health. That said thanks for tips on using faster shutter speeds for clearer/sharper pics. A lot of my first test shots seemed a bit flat and blurry. I’ll keep practicing

    I've had this lens for a number of years and liked the results I've gotten from it. That said I've not used it for a while and have been using a prime lens. I guess it's time to take it out again and see the kind of results I can get. I'm still shooting SLR's.

      yeah dig it out and do some shooting. Its not the sharpest lens out there, but the convenience is just so great.

    Thanks for the review Greg. I am using the same combination, R7 with the Tamron and I fully agree with your conclusion. It is a great multipurpose lens. In addition to your mentioned limitations I find it is a bit slow in focussing.

    • @gregtoope
      @gregtoope  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. I never really noticed much of an issue with focusing speed but I also wasn’t focusing on anything that speed would be a concern.

    I'm thinking about getting it but I'm reading complains from R7 owners that have tested this lens... I'm hesitant. Did you upgrade the lens firmware? Should I buy it?

    • @gregtoope
      @gregtoope  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t have any issues with the lens. And the firmware in the lens and camera where all current.

    Most of what you said was hocus pocus for me but i loved the end product. That clitchyness i mentioned befor was that due to the VC button?

    • @gregtoope
      @gregtoope  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      that was exactly the issue.

    I recently rented this lens and found that it worked well with my Canon camera. However, extending the telephoto proved to be quite challenging. Specifically, the lens became stuck when trying to extend it midway, requiring significant effort to overcome. It seems that many other users have also experienced this issue and have raised concerns about it.

    • @gregtoope
      @gregtoope  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i never had any issue. You sure the lock wasnt clicked on by accident?

    • @shoop4040
      @shoop4040 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregtoope yup, the lock was not on- I watched several other reviews and they mentioned the same thing about requiring some effort to extend the telephoto. And after some use it does get better.

    Unless I missed something, but will this lens work with my full frame Canon 5D Mark II, and my Canon R8 with an EF adapter?

    • @gregtoope
      @gregtoope  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is an APS-C lens, so its designed to work with Canon Crop sensor cameras.

    • @andreiter
      @andreiter ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s what I thought. I did not know if there was a full frame version of this lens. I have a sigma 50 to 500 mm lens, but it’s too heavy to carry around.

    For viewers: switch your TH-cam to Max Quality (2160 / 1440 p instead of 720p). The foto's all seem soft, it gives a more fair result.
    And for the reviewer: it is probably not a wise idea to test a lens by making photo's through a smudgy train window ... Too big a chance that the lens is blamed for
    I shoot this Lens a lot. Had a visit to Schotland taking along a few L grade Lenses. Which I ALL left in the hote room, for sake of the weight while tracking, and I only took the 18-400 on a cropped EOS 77D and when shooting at the sweet spot F8, F10 up to F16 - and at somewhat faster appertures (1/400 and up) the lens is at it's strongest and produces imaculate results. ISO stays neatly at 100 or a little up. No need for room and time consuming RA shots.
    Also keep in mind: when shooting @ 300 mm and up context (on cropped that is 480 mm until 640 mm) / weather / fogginess / smog / dampness cloudy influences start playing a role concerning sharpness.
    For this lense I'm returning from my full frame R8 to my cropped 77D. And so I really go back considering auto focus, but gain a lot in simple shooting and composition fun ...
