    I do want to note that this lens is also gasketed for moisture resistance throughout the barrel with 5 other O-rings (which do contribute to your damping issues, it's true), plus the back end. The mount itself is metal and well seated and the front element is fluorine coated so liquids don't stick. Because of these things, I think it would be safe to say that the weather sealing on this lens exceeds that of most other hobbyist level lenses; with the exception of the new 10-24 VC HLD, a lens that shares the same architectural aesthetic.
    We're really going for a better construct, even in entry level lenses, when it comes to our new design philosophy.
    One other thing to add: we have had excellent success tracking burrowing owls in launch and flight when using 200mm-400mm range. They're pretty fast :) and it's about the only action we've been able to get near since I received my samples but the lens exceeded my expectations in doing so. Of course we cheated by using a Nikon D500, which is an AF powerhouse but it was still a pleasant surprise.
    Thanks for the review, Master Abbott. Always good to hear your voice raised above the madding crowd, sir. Excellent as always.

    Thanks for the review. You are the first of the best reviewers to post a review of this intriguing lens. I recently purchased the Sigma 100-400 lens on your recommendation and I am very pleased with the sharpness of this lens. It is a winner! This new
    Tamron 18-400 isn't in the same class as the 4x Sigma zoom but it looks like a good lens for my Nikon cropped sensor cameras for an overseas trip combined with the latest excellent Tamron 10-24 and the Nikon 35mm 1.8 DX lens for trips where weight and portability are paramount. A good example would be a tour in the thin air of Machu Picchu for example. Thanks for your time and expertise!

    Given the optical range this lens covers Tamron should be applauded for producing what amounts to a real one lens solution. I don't think anybody could realistically expect optical perfection but all in all I can see this lens doing well. Tamron were very wise to include their excellent VC, without it the lens would be essentially unusable at the longer focal lengths given the relatively slow aperture range. For APSC shooters this would make for a great overall travel lens 😃

  • @TaylorHuston
    @TaylorHuston 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As a professional photographer I wouldn't use this.
    But my sister, who just shoots for fun and to take pictures of my nephew, this would be perfect. Cover every scenario in one lens.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. Tamron didn't make this lens for pros - the market for this type of lens is actually huge. I was at a resort this weekend (high end), mixing some shooting for them with some general relaxation, and almost every DSLR I saw was sporting some kind of kit lens.

    Such a GREAT review! I got so excited when I got notified that you are reviewing this! So many people started shitting on it BEFORE the lens was even shipped out just because it is a SUPER zoom lens. But I gotta say these images look really good! Maybe not extremely sharp, but the color is pretty nice and the photos don't look "cheap." I was hoping to see a little bit more images in the video though! I know I can view your gallery, but more images in review videos would be cool imo!

    Nearly all APS-C dSLR owners prefer zoom lenses than prime ones. That's why aps-c cameras from Nikon and Canon have so few APS-C prime lenses in comparison to full frame prime lenses.
    The most popular social networks reduce the quality of photos tremendously. So the photos of a very sharp lens can't be appreciated.
    The super zoom lenses suffer from geometric distortion, vignetting and chromatic aberration which can be viewed in the photos of social networks. However all these problems can be solved digitally by the camera or later with software.

      Hi Dustin, thanks for a detailed review of the 18-400mm. I just purchased it and saw the difference between the 300mm and the 400mm, and I like them both. The peeve I have is, it's tightness when zooming in or out. Is there a solution to this? same issue with my 300mm.
      Different question: Is there a book, or booklet I can purchase explaining the meaning of Di, VC, HLD, and all other abbreviations and with glossary explanation? Thanks in advance.

      Dustin, as an aside, while this review is chiefly for stills photography, did you have insights as to how the lens behaved in live view or video mode, on an EOS with Dual Pixel AF, for instance in AF Tracking, face tracking etc, or possibly on a Cinema EOS 100/300.
      You mentioned the zoom barrel was a little stiff from the box but seemed to get smoother with a little use. When zooming in live view mode did the image flicker as the aperture values changed?
      Usually, zooming on a stills lens while shooting video is at the ones own peril, because so much is asked of a stills zoom lens, the non par focal build means the AF is working, the IC controlled aperture diaphragm is working and the Image Stabiliser is working all at the same time and that's a lot of instant processing, my experience is Sigma and Tamron lenses often hiccup eventually with the stabiliser getting stuttery or the AF motor choking, or in the case of the Tamron 16-300 complete failure to communicate to the body.
      For instance I find the Image Stabiliser usually works best for video after you hold the lens as stable as possible then button on, that's when it kicks in, so zooming and/or panning while recording video is tough for these lenses to handle.
      (Sigma 18-250, Sigma 18-300, Tamron 28-300, Tamron 16-300)
      That said, I'm talking about using these on my EOS C100 and soon on the new C200, these may be a little different application than on a 7D or EOS 80D.
      Since you review so many of these lenses I'm interested in your thoughts please.
      Frank

In the same topic of the first question, I really like the idea of having all in one lens, but I'm afraid to lose some quality if I replace my 18-135 for the 18-400. So the question is, in terms of quality do you think there is a very significant difference between these two lens or not? And the other question is, If I make that switch do you think I will miss something that the 18-135 has and the 18-400 does not have?
      Thanks

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Over the same focal length (18-135mm) I think the lenses are fairly close in image quality. The 70-300 will have stronger image quality than the Tamron over the same focal range, though.

    Max zoom factor is about 3x or so to ensure optical quality in a good lens. Nikon 24-70, 70-200, 17-55 are good examples. 22x zoomfactor in the Tamron is just crazy. And when are you going to use anything above 200mm? Think about it. People tend to want this long focal lenghts in a lens but 99% of the time they shoot somewhere between 18 and 50mm.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think I agree with your last point at all (it's certainly not true for me), but I do agree with your first premise for the most part. I think an argument could be made for 24-105mm zooms (about a 5x zoom ratio), but that's about it.

    Were one considering using this lens for birding and sports (including video of same) plus general photography and video then one might think of comparing it with the Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary (for birding and sports only).
    Both cost about the same.
    The Sigma is just a bit more than double the length of the Tamron.
    The Sigma weighs 2.7 times the Tamron at nearly 2kg.
    Is the longer and much heavier Sigma going to give significantly better image quality than the Tamron?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

    No manual override - what exactly does that mean in this case? Does it mean that you can safely turn the focus ring in AF mode, but that it just doesn't do anything (like on my old 1987 Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 mrk 1), or does it mean that you could actually damage the gears if you tried to turn the ring in AF mode (which is the case on my older Tamron zooms, the 80-210 f/4.5-5.6 and the 200-400 f/5.6)?

      @skakdosmer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the reply. In that case it's probably not a good choice for me: Many years ago I wrecked the AF on a Sigma 28-200. I never deliberately meant to turn the focus ring with the AF set to on, but occasionally I did so by accident, and evidently I did it once too many. Anyway, not including full time manual looks rather outdated to me in this day and age.

      Anders Olsson A rather redundant remark. As you should have realized by my question, I needed further clarification. I guess I could explain why, but since Dustin has already very kindly cleared up everything, it's no longer relevant, I think.

    Thanks for the candid and helpful review, Dustin. And many thanks for posting the image gallery. I had my doubts, but was intrigued. Having seen the results, I think I may have a better suggestion for the market that would be in the hunt for this lens.
    To me, the image quality is about what I'd expect from a good point and shoot superzoom, like the Canon SX60 HS. And if this is really made with the casual-shooting traveler in mind, I think I'd point them to something like that. Heresy, I know. But that camera costs $200 less than this lens, is lighter and smaller, and takes images that are as good (better, in my view: A bit sharper and with less noise, surprisingly). And there's no full-time manual focus on that camera either, so what do you lose? Yeah, the sensor is itty-bitty, but I'm not sure that an APS-C sensor attached to this lens has any advantage over that sensor. And that camera gives more than twice the effective focal length: 21-1365mm.
    If a person is getting this lens because they don't want to switch lenses (even if over the period that they're travelling), just get a dedicated camera that does that. Perhaps something for potential buyers to consider.
    Again, great review. Thanks.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting perspective. I'd have to compare them head to head to determine the accuracy of that. I would say that autofocus is often an area of lack with superzoom cameras

      I have been actively using a (small, lightweight, travel-friendly) Panasonic FZ80 bridge camera (20-2000 attached superzoom). Last week, I purchased a (used) Canon 7D Mark II and this Tamron 18-400 as my next big step up. Today, I ordered the Tamron Tap-in console to improve the focus, which isn't as nearly as crisp as my old bridge camera. I hope that these $$$s, new devices, extra steps and added weight/bulk will be worth the while.

    Good video, Dustin. Just some input from a person who has had one for over a year now. I love most things about this lens, but the auto focus! I find this lens almost worthless for wildlife photography unless my subject is perfectly still. It will NOT track, going totally out of focus. I've talked to a couple friends who have the same problem with theirs. When trying to shoot a flying bird, for example, I rarely get one in focus. This is completely frustrating, leaving me with a ton of missed opportunities. Seems I'm not the only one, so at least I know it's not me! LOL

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    one thing I found that the zoom on 18mm -400mm is very good but when I zoom from 200mm to 400mm it doesn't zoom more.
    the difference between is 200mm but looks like 50mm . I'm looking forward to hearing from you. I'm your fan from Afghanistan. as a fan I love you. God bless you and your family abundantly.

    Hey Dustin. YOU HAVE NOT FAILED ME YET!! L O L. I tested the lens and it is in fact SHARP!!. I deliberately tested it on my Nikon D300 a good but older 12 megapixel camera and I tested it in a dark overground conservation park. I will say this lens is best used at F8, F9 or higher in my opinion if shooting at the long end. (you could squeeze a few shots at F7.1) And of course since its widest aperture is F6.3 we already know we need good light at 400mm. I will also say this lens is a VERY GOOD walk around lens it could also be used as a beginner BIRDING LENS! (yes I said that)... if money is really an issue. It does focus breath like most other ultra zoom lens I have learnt about. so you don't really tend to get your full 400mm at some points even though it records that the shot was taken at 400mm. I posted some images at this link for those who want to check it out. www.flickr.com/photos/166123535@N05/with/30152610718/

    I would no longer recommend this lens, up to a week ago this was my favorite lens, but a week ago the lens barrel began getting much stiffer, and at 3/4 zoom or beyond it stopped focusing. Now, a week later and you have to force the lens to even half way zoom and it will now only focus up to half way zoom, the lens is basically dying as I try to use it and this is a brand new lens. I had been using it daily to do photography in Acadia National Park.

Just wanted to thank you so much for the advise regarding returning the Tamron 18-400 lens that was vignetting severely on my full frame Canon camera. I called the sales person who had sold it to me and she immediately took responsibility and acknowledged her error and apologized. She now is searching for a solution to my camera vs. telephoto needs. I was pleased she was so willing to help and didn't try to make the return difficult. I love the lens. I almost would buy a good camera around this lens, but the problem is that I like the idea of a full frame camera because making videos is going to be more and more important. I wonder if Tamron might be adapting is 18-400mm technology to a full-frame camera. That would be THE idea solution! But the engineering probably is more difficult. Again, many thanks. On my backyard bird feeders (at a distance of say 5m), 400 mm could barely match the magnification on my 250 mm zoom. Since I like to shoot birds at close range, this didn't seem very useful. So I traded up for the Tamron 100-400 F4.5-6.3 VC which has minimal focus breathing, and I am much happier.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@roninr8199 Are you referring to the focal length? If so, that rumor isn't true. Tamron would open themselves up for litigation if they falsely claimed the focal length of a lens outside of about a 7% standard that everyone uses (Often a 35mm lens is actually 34 or 36mm, for example, but no one wants a 34mm lens). The lens does focus breathe, however, which means that it behaves as shorter than its stated focal range at close distances. At infinity, however, it is fairly close to 400mm.

    • @roninr8199
      @roninr8199 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DustinAbbottTWI I haven't used so not sure but many reviewers say distance coverage from 300 to 400 is not good and soft too. Rather I can buy 70-300mm afp which is very sharp at price of less than $200 and might be own another sharp lens like 18 140 mm (nikon) .
      Is the auto focus fast with 18-400 to lock birds on flight. One more thing I have noticed that it is not internal focusing which might be a let down.

    • @roninr8199
      @roninr8199 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @fukthegoog then why are you buying a dslr in first place 😂 😂. It is there to use interchangeable lens. Rather buy a nikon p1000 which gets around 2000 mm focal length for price of $1000. The point here is we have nikon 18 300 for same price. What is to be considered is auto focus speed, imagine sharpness especially at 300-400mm is really present and justifies the price. One thing is sure by seeing your comment. I am definitely smarter than you 😂😂

    I'd say if you bought one of these, and maybe a 10-24 (for APS-C) you'd have a nice 2-lens travel kit for probably around $1500-$1800 at most (assuming you spent about $500 on a body, and then another $500 on a 10-24 lens of some sort). Or if you don't plan on doing any interiors or architecture, you could just forego the 10-24 and just get this and a mid-range body and have a nice kit that's ready for anything. But as with super travel zooms like this there are some trade-offs over, say a 18-55 / 24-70 and 70-300 combo.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

    You are WRONG. Full frame or APS-C ; 400 mm = 400 mm.
    This optic has the small image circle for the APS-C sensors, it can not be used at a FF DSLR.
    And it will not change to 600 mm at a Full Frame camera..
    This Tamron at 400 mm at an APS-C has the magnification of 12 times compared to a
    50 mm Full Frame optic.
    It would be wise to compare the images in the two viewfinders of two cameras.
    A Full Frame DSLR with the correct 400 mm and a APS-C camera with this zoom at 400 mm.
    To travel with just one camera body is not very smart.
    The magnification of the second camera seems more .
    Mounted a real 600 mm to a Full Frame gives the same effect as a 400 mm to a APS-C.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've done that. I recommend that you take a look at the Tamron website and the listing for this lens. You will find that they give the full frame equivalency there, because ALL lenses have their focal length multiplied by the crop factor. It has nothing to do with the lens, and everything to do with the camera's crop factor.

    Hi Dustin please suggest whether this 18-400 can act as substitute for 150-600mm Tamron lens for most of the purpose.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. This is a general purpose lens that allows users to have a one lens solution, but it is nowhere close to providing equivalent image quality and autofocus tracking performance to the specialized 150-600 lens.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is difficult because this lens isn't a top tier focusing lens, plus you're adding the complication of an adapter and shooting at the most challenging focal length. I'm not sure you'll see anything a lot better than what you are seeing right now.

    Played with the lens for a few days, not sure where all of the positive reviews come from, the lens has terrible chromatic aberration, especially noticeable between white subjects and dark background on the sides of the image. You have to stop down aperture 2 stops (at least) to get more or less acceptable sharpness, even then it is pretty bad. Overall total disappointment of a lens :(

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Peter Litvak I think the positive reviews are based on a realistic expectation of what lenses like this are capable of achieving. I have reviewed at least seven lenses in this class, and the performance from this lens was on par with them despite having the most zoom range
