Hi! Oh that is so tough! Is there any way you can get some treatment to assist you. It is really not easy avoiding communicating in life, unfortunately we all have to do it! I completely understand your frustration but it is GREAT you have people you are comfortable talking with.
I just shake it off and try and talk slower and clearer good luck and if you get made fun of just remember that God gave you a voice so give it to him!
I'm 16 years old and I've been living with a lisp for very long time. At first, I didn't think much of it. Throughout elementary, I didn't really notice me having one. But then I got to high school. High school is a very tough time with a lisp. I've lost all self-confidence and hardly ever speak anymore. Sometimes I can go days without hearing my own voice because I myself don't even want to hear my own lisp.
if you make fun of yourself nobody can make fun of you, own it, and work towards fixing it that's what I'm doing :) I'm 25 and a lot of my friends don't even remember I have a lisp so it makes it even harder to realize sometimes.
That is a really great strategy Zack. Thanks for sharing it with everyone! I might tell my clients to do the same. Keep up the practice and stay goal focused.
I relate to your situation a lot. I sucked my thumb when I was little and I had that habit until I was nine, which made the top of my mouth the resting place for my tongue, which I think might be the cause of my lisp. I never really thought anything of it back then, but now in high school, I very rarely speak in public because I'm afraid of messing up my speech and embarrasing myself in front of people. I totally understand what you're going through. Remember that you're not going through this alone - there are other people (like me) who have the same issue. :)

Same case with "stuttering", mean word for those who have trouble with it. And to explain that a liSp is a Sibilant Sound Some people make when they Speak. oh boy...
I didn’t really notice I had a lisp until my friend pointed it out, Ive tried as hard as I can but I can’t say s or c or x properly, Ive lost a lot of confidence talking to people
They pointed it out to me in kindergarten and I had to see someone to fix it but after a while they made me stop going so I assumed it was over and never worried again except for some instances in middle and high school when people assumed I said an f instead of an s, but no one really told me I had a lisp so I kept hoping it wasn't real, or people would've told me about it. Recently my friend mocked me for my lisp and now I know it's real. Because of this I cry myself to sleep every night and I am most likely going to kill myself within a few weeks, coming from a person who used to bash people for saying emo shit like that online.
Hi @@fuzz6263, I hope you're doing okay man. Life is so precious and the only thing in it you can never fix/correct/make better is making the mistake of taking it away. I'm sure you have a lot going on, but this specifically is such a small problem in the grand scheme of how wonderful the world and life can be. I'm going to be thinking about you, whoever you may be, and wishing you peace and joy. You owe it to yourself and deserve it.
Same I was saying something to be funny and she said “It would sound better if you didn’t have a lisp” and I thought oh yeah, because I originally thought I had a mix of many accents and sounded weird but it was because I have a lisp
I was always confident but then a new kid in my friend group pointed out my lisp which no one else noticed and now i feel like shit cuz he always takes the piss outta me but i cant fight him cuz he has asthma so that has led me to this video
For 57 years, I have lived with my lisp. Now, after 5 minutes, your video has made a tremendous difference in my speech. I am thrilled and grateful. I will practice making this new way of speaking a habit.
@@Random-sk6hm I stood in front of a mirror and recorded myself over and over while carefully placing my tongue against my gums just below my front teeth, smiling, and saying the dreaded S sound. I used to place my tongue against my teeth creating a long hissing sound as opposed to a th lisp. I hope this helps! Good luck.
Hi Christine, I have also been living with this for 55 years. my work over the past 12 - 13 years has been doing public speaking knowing I have a lisp and trying to avoid the S word which is pretty impossible but yet I keep going. watching this five-minute snippet has already helped me big time. I replied to your message because we both have been dealing with this for a similar amount of years and am encouraged to see other people my age have the same problem.
Hi I'm 16 and have always had a lisp since I was too stubborn as a child to listen to the speech therapist! My lisp does not sound like a 'th' but it is still strong. I think the sound is coming out of the left side of teeth instead of wherever it should be. It really effects my confidence. Do you have any tips to help please? Thanks
Oh! My first and last name both start with s.. I find it very embarrassing to introduce myself..many a times when I would ignore if anyone asked my name so that the person would answer that for me...
I like my lisp It’s part of my personality But I sound so weird in recordings and when I try singing, it kinda sucks But no one really cares if I have one
For 29 years, I've lived with an intense lisp that I didn't even know it has a name "lateral". 4 years ago, as a pass time before bed, I decided to search TH-cam on ways to fix it. I was expecting to get a list of nearby speech therapy clinics or something like that. After watching your 5 min video, my lisp was gone. I was so shocked that I had to record my voice and send it to my brothers because I literally didn't believe my ears. Today, I came across a random video where the topic had nothing to do with the lisp but the TH-camr had a pretty pronounced lisp. I remembered what happened to me and for an hour, I kept searching my browsing history looking for your video so I can share it with that random guy. And in the process I remembered that I owe a very sincere THANK you that is long due by now. So Thank you!
Migo B- wow!!! Just wow! I am not on this channel regularly and only just had the time to come and check the comments! Your message has absolutely made my day, week and possibly even year. I am so chuffed, delighted and happy for you and the beautiful gesture of thanks really goes above and beyond. What great news!!!!
Wow. Thank you. The tongue behind the bottom teeth is a real game changer for me. I've been lisping for over 50 years and that's the best suggestion I have ever heard. Thank you again.
I didn’t notice mine until middle school when people started pointing it out and then I began noticing it in recordings of myself, I’ve been really stressed out and have been avoiding the letter s as much as possible but this helped heaps thank you so much
Woah wait a minutttte! I just tried the second way where you position your tongue behind your top teeth and omg I’m actually so shook cause I’ve been so self conscious of my lisp. I feel so happy right now omg
I think this is the best video. I learned how to do it properly in one night, thank the lord, but I'm still practicing getting it right every time. I've realized my main problem was airflow to help me project and pronounce S.
Hi I'm 19 years old and have a lisp I can't say the s and z word but now after I saw your video I'm going to try the s but please do the z word it's hard to do it my lisp is making my life very hard because I shy to say the s and z words so I ignore those words with s and z sounds
Hello @Aboo Samrah Thank you for your comment and I am sorry to take a fortnight to reply! A lisp can really have a big impact on communication but don't give up and try not to avoid communicating despite having a lisp. Try drilling the sound for /s/ and /z/ on there own. I have another video on how to accurately say /z/ which may also help get you started. See here : th-cam.com/video/uE0NO1wfEQc/w-d-xo.html and also here: th-cam.com/video/h41Am1-RpTk/w-d-xo.html
i have been to years of speech therapy and still nothing. i hate it. everyone makes fun of me and school. my nickname is lisp. people dont understand that i cant control it.
Hi Isabelle. ARGH that makes me so angry to hear that people would dare to ridicule you. Has your speech therapist instructed you in what custom tongue position you need to get a clear /s/? Perhaps you need to trial a few different approaches outlined in comments above. Speech pathology sessions should work! In fact we need to measure our clients' progress in our notes in % per session and if there is no improvement then something is not going well! Do you practice daily exercises?
Voice Science I practice all the time. It just won't go away. Im trying to teach myself that its who i am but i hate getting teased. the kids at school act like they've never heard someone with a lisp. When i was younger my speach therapists thought my tounge was in the incorrect place as i was speaking, that wasnt the case, then they thought it was my teeth alignment, went through years if braces, still lisp, i have sort if given up on trying to get rid of it. Its a part if who i am now, and anyone who doesnt like it can F off.
Did this years ago and watched this video most days. Totally forget I ever had a lisp because this video helped me completely fix it!! I can't even pronounce S the way I used to anymore. Just thought i'd come back here and say thankyou because i really hated it :)
Wow! I can't believe this, how amazing. This is exactly why I made this video in the hope that it might change someone's life Japared Oakfield, you've made my day. Sorry it's taken so long to see this comment and give you a polite reply. Have a wonderful day! Sarah
Thank you so much, I originally came to this video to help with my "s" with a retainer and it really helped but I could also tell my friends/family where to go if they have problems too
Hello Jamal! I am so delighted to receive such positive feedback from you and to hear that this was beneficial for someone struggling with clear speech and a new retainer!! Happy New Year and enjoy your clear /s/ sound!
Hi! It will always feel STRANGE and ABNORMAL when a sound change occurs because you body and ears are getting used to it. Use the mirror as a measure and see if the tongue is coming through the cracks of the teeth. If it isn't my guess is you are getting closer to your target. Sorry to take TOO LONG to reply! I've now allocated once per week to get back to people's comments. You might like to check the next /s/ video here: th-cam.com/video/INSIEXcEBpA/w-d-xo.html Be sure to subscribe as I'm trying to develop more content for /s/ for you all due to such positive responses from everyone.
I'm in my late 30's. I was teased when I was in school, I remember one kid in particular was cruel. Just a SOB and made fun of me. I am not as bad as some people, but I am definitely self conscious. I should of practice more, here I am almost mid life and practicing. If you have young kids, get them help early.
I was made fun of growing up for my lisp and I’m totally okay with it. People probably still laugh at me when I talk. Once you can accept your self for who you are, it truly doesn’t matter! Makes you that much more unique! Now, I did come here because I do want to know how people really do say s normally 🤣 it’s freaking impossible for me
Thank you for sharing this. I think your comment will really advocate and help others here who are struggling. Thanks for the beautiful, kind words of support.
QUESTION: For years I never knew I had a lisp until someone told me. After watching recorded videos of myself I was shocked I discover I had one. Also, I think too much hard drinking to the point of slurring my words has damaged my brain in a way to effect my speech and my lisp has gotten worse. Has or Does anyone else have any similar experiences?
This was fantastic help, esp the dynamics explanation, and the exercises. I had a problem with a lisp when I was a kid. Last year a medicine I was prescribed made my lisp come back, I think because it made my tongue feel sort of frozen. Weird I know, so I stopped taking it and the lisp went away. Just thought I'd mention this in case anybody noticed a lisp getting worse and that it might be from a medicine.
I have a lisp. I began noticing it during primary school, this was when people on my Literacy Table would tease me because of it. I just turned away and said, “it’s not my fault”. I hate having a lisp because it disables me from what I love most, singing. People make fun of me because I pronounce things differently due to my lisp. I usually try not to talk to people, but it’s kind of in my nature to be socially active. I am a Gemini after all! I’ve tried finding tutorials of how to get rid of it because I have heard from people that speech therapy should help, but I’m scared of asking my parents. Before I go, this was an excellent tutorial and I hope that it helped people. Might not help everyone, but keep going. x
She understands because she is a speech pathologist, she probably knows more about lisps than people with lisps, and she is doing this to help people :)
When I was 14 I found out that I had a lisp because of people making childish little comments on it. Around this time I had lost lots of self confidence and whenever I brought it up with my mum she would say that I should not listen to them and said that it was cute. Then finally after bugging her about it and telling her that it doesn’t matter how she feels about it and it’s about my confidence she finally let me get the right ‘therapy’. Till this day I can say ‘s’ and ‘z’ words without an issue and this has really made an impact on my school grades! It just goes to show that you can overcome anything when you persevere so don’t worry if you are feeling down because you can always find a way through it all :)
I’m 20 years old and I think I just finally pronounced the s sound correctly!!! Thank you so much When I make the x sound, it sounds like the “s” sound. How do I fix that ?
Yayyyyyy I’m so happy to hear this! Proud of you! Sorry it took so long to reply to you- I took a little holiday. Keep me posted on your progress. Are you managing to get the sound out now in your daily speaking? We have a free download and even more strategies here which can help thevoicescience.com/fix-your-lisp/
Hi! I'm quite late, but oh well. I'm currently 13, and I've had a lisp since I was 4. My parents tried to take me to a speech therapist, but still nothing. It's annoying, because people at school make fun of me, they don't understand I can't control it. I even got rejected because of it. I'm not comfortable with talking to anyone I don't know, and if I do I say like 1 word to them and that's it.
I've already knew that I have lisp when I was in Elementary. I'm isolating myself from others because they might knew. My confidence deflated and I'm afraid that they would bully me because of my lisp. Until I got from secondary and it improved my confidence but not how I pronounce s. It still bothered me tho but I've no choice. Now I'm 18 and I just finished my SHS I decided to take a job application for call center. My huge problem is my lisp and I'm grateful that I've found this video. I hope I'll improve so that my confidence ass will come back as I used to be.
I have always had a pronounced lisp and it used to bother me alot. A couple people have made fun if me for it until I pointed out insecurities of theirs and they backed off. Everyone is insecure about something. If this video helps with your lisp, awesome. If not remember, it is usually worse to you than other people. Don't get down on yourself!
Im actually hella happy cause of the trick where you put your tounge at the bottom teeth now I dont feel like an idiot,Life Saver all I gotta do is be aware when Im about to use an s word and im good.
I'm so happy this was explained to me. One of the worst things about having a lisp is that many people and most people wont tell you so you may never correct it, in your life time.
So the whole time I’ve been sticking my tongue slightly too far out :/ I feel dumb It’ll be easily correctible for me if i can just get into the habit so thanks
At a very young age, I've been taught to place my tongue at the bottom of my teeth to say my s sounds. A few years later I got a new speech therapist she told me to put my tongue at the top this new placement mess me up. I'm so used to placing my tongue at the bottom placing my tongue at the top is so foreign to me. It made my s sounds sound force ( I'm not sure on to describe it accurately) when i place it at the bottom it has clearer ( i believe), but it has dragged out s sound. Embarrassingly i believe the reason for my trouble of placing my tongue at the correct position is because I've been sucking my thumb to sleep till i was 12 years old ( Short side story my speech my therapist told me to place my sides of tongue at the hands of my teeth and make u shape i could never do that.)
amber hilterbran yeah I have one too and you could here it in my videos. My friend busted my tooth when I was very young and Caused me to have a bad s sound.i wish you all the best. And I’m getting braces so it could help it
Hi I have a lisp and I'm really shy to say any z or s words which makes my life harder and every time I say s or z my mouth twist a little bit and I just want to know if that's normal and if I can get rid of the mouth twisting and the lisp Please Respond
Hello Mohammed, thank you for your question and sorry I've take too long to reply to you! The mouth twisting sounds like a compensatory behaviour you may be using. This could be reduced with some speech pathology intervention. I suspect we need to drill the target sounds in simpler levels (ie., words by themselves) then work up to to longer phrases with feedback regarding mouth visuals to reduce the unnecessary mouth movement. Let me know if you have any more questions, or, if you are in Australia or abroad, you are welcome to come to Voice Science for some help! All the best!!!
I’m so so happy to hear this!!! Stay tuned to our channel we have a new video with strategies for lisp correction in case you want to pick up a few new ideas!
I understand how this would help, and I appreciate it, but I have a frontal lisp and when I try to fix my S words like this, it feels like my tongue is too big to fit in my mouth to say S words correctly, is it true it can't be fixed?
HI Kyle, sorry to take TOO long to reply to your question. I've now allocated time weekly to get back to people's comments and you were prioritised! Most frontal lisps will have that feeling that it is so hard to conceal the tongue at the front of the mouth, as the issue with a frontal lisp is the tongue comes forward into the space in front of the teeth. It will feel strange and maybe even "wrong" once you secure it behind your teeth. Try and curl it in the centre perhaps to make sure it sits low enough. You want to position it at the base not agains the back of the teeth or it will be really hard to achieve the required air pressure. OR if your tongue is quite long (macroglossia is a term to check or even consider a diagnosis for lisp to get some more tailored strategies) it may be better for you to instead place the tongue at the top of the mouth behind the top teeth rather than the bottom teeth as then you can use the length of it more and not feel like it is so long. Let me know how you go! Otherwise check our next /s/ video here: th-cam.com/video/INSIEXcEBpA/w-d-xo.html and subscribe to the channel as there is more /s/ videos coming in the pipeline.
Thank you SO MUCH, after watching this video a couple of times and taking speech therapy after 4 months my teacher/mom finally noticed a difference and next week I’m going to GRARDUATE from classes! Just so anybody reads this I have faith in you and I believe you will eventually get the sound 😄
What's more upsetting is my boyfriend has the letter s in his name I'm like 😭😭😭😭😭😭 I tell him I want to cut out my tongue and he says "I can do it for you" joking lmao

We had a similar question so I've just copied my reply here as it might help you. "An underbite can contribute. I'm so angry to hear that people would dare bully you for something like this. Why not have a go at positioning the /s/ at the top of the mouth, that might be the better posture for you while the underbite is there. If an underbite is there, the tongue is visible and can protrude a bit at the base of your mouth so putting it behind the top teeth might help get it out of the way to stop any distortion. We are posting future content for /s/ including a new video that was shared yesterday which you can view here : th-cam.com/video/INSIEXcEBpA/w-d-xo.html SO be sure to subscribe cos I really want to help you all!
Is it possible a person pronounces most "S" as "TH" during the whole life and doesn't notice it, making it even harder to make the difference between both sounds? (I'm not a native English speaker)
Hello and thank you for such an interesting question. Yes this is very possible- the main reason being that phonological processing (sound decoding) in our second language is not always as accurate as first. Possibly the “th” and “s” sound for you became allophones (merged sounds that signify the same thing to you as no context variation seemed to be caused if the sounds replace each other). And now you’ve discovered that the two sounds are distinct. Many languages allow different mechanical sounds to mean the same thing. Does that help? Let me know if I went a bit technical 😂
I've been having this lisp issue for a couple of years now. Honestly, I just need to put the work into of getting rid of it because I feel like I'm annoying my online/real life friends, family, and teachers a ton. I even find my voice having a bit cringe whenever I do TH-cam content.
please respond!, i have a really inconsistent lisp sometimes i dont lisp but most times i do, its not a lisp that sound slushy or a Th sound it is i assume a platal lisp, something is not right i detect but its hard to decipher the problem, i feel like middle of my tounge touches the top of mouth either that or i talk with only the right side of my lips and tongue it never projects from the middle sometimes when i play around with my lips and mouth i can produce a very clear S i feel like i have a very lazy tongue its also small
Hello Razhan, sorry it has taken some time to respond to your query. It can be very difficult to stabilise a clear /s/ sound in different positions of words without some strategic practice and drill. I think the reason it may be very inconsistent is due to the fact that it may be harder for you to achieve in certain word positions or next to certain consonant and vowel sounds. It will always be easier to make the sound on it's own than to create it clearly at word level up to sentence level and finally spontaneously when interacting. I would recommend a speech pathology assessment to identify accuracy breakdowns and ongoing training to strengthen your sound production and accuracy.
Voice Science i appreciate the response, i can talk spontenously without lisping but it decides to whenever it wants to, the back of my tongue touches the roof of my mouth when i use S's is that supposed to happen? whenever im sitting down in a quiet environment i tend to lisp less and also the amount of saliva and phlegm determine my lisp as well, btw your goergous!
Perhaps when you are speaking with lots of background noise you increase air pressure to give more vocal volume on vowels and sounds that need your voice and as a result the /s/ sound is more apparently distorted? Is there any way you can simulate your speech patterns in the quiet environment to apply them to louder environments in the same manner? Sorry to take so long to reply! I now am allocating admin time once per week to get back to everyone's comments! Be sure to check out our new /s/ video that looks at combining /s/ with /t/. You might find that combo helpful! th-cam.com/video/INSIEXcEBpA/w-d-xo.html

I’ve had a lisp my whole life but the lisp isn’t that bad but also I can’t say my r’s and I didn’t think about it to much in elementary but when I hit middle school I noticed it and some people pointed it out and I hate talking now and this video didn’t help I’m out of options to stop my lisp

Just being honest, if you have a lisp I think it sounds cute ^-^ I don't have a lisp, but I used to when I was around 5 or 6 and I kinda liked it because I thought it sounded cute- I sometimes make it sound like I have a lisp when I'm just talking to myself about something (I do that sometimes) and tbh I really like it
@TheVoiceScience Hello! Let me begin by saying thank you for the helpful content! I was just wondering how often and for how long you would recommend we do these exercises for? I am 20 years old so I will probably need to do these exercises more often than a child since I my frontal lisp has been habitual for two whole decades. It's probably going to be really hard to remove and I fear I may not succeed at all. However, my lisp is fairly minor. Also, I find that my 'S' sounds okay even with the lisp however I think the lisp makes the 'S' sound go on for a little bit too long. I want a shorter 'S' sound. But I will still practice training my tongue to stay behind the teeth for a better 'S' sound. Do you have any advice for the shorter 'S' sound as well?
YAYAYAAAYA! Congrats! So happy to hear that. This video is not for everyone because there are many strategies that we need to take into account for each individual BUT I am glad to hear it worked for you. You can check out more tips here: thevoicescience.com/fix-your-lisp/
The letter S should be abolished, considering so many people struggle with it - kids, deaf people, toothless people, intoxicated people, regular people, etc. My second language is Korean, where the S is pronounced softer, so even if you have a lisp, it doesn't sound as obvious as having a lisp in English. Also in Korea, a lisp is considered a quirk, not a speech impediment, so it doesn't have the same negative connotation associated with having a lisp in American culture. There's a famous male actress who's known for his lisp, and women who have it are adored for it, because it makes them sound more youthful.
Just wondering.....whose cruel idea was it for the word 'lisp' to have an 's' in it?

Because of this I cry myself to sleep every night and I am most likely going to kill myself within a few weeks, coming from a person who used to bash people for saying emo shit like that online.
I have the exact same problem, and when they mention it, it gets a lot worse.
Why is this never corrected early? No classes for it in schools? Barbaric.
Well I mean, not everyone has it.
Yeah I agree with Ulek_ but it would be nice to have like one or two speech therapy lessons in foundation stage

Me too! I’m so annoyed and i wish the girl who told me never did lol
When your name is Ace and you have a lisp fml
Might not help everyone, but keep going. x
It's been 5 years do you still have it?

Its actually easy, at first it might be a struggle but if u get used to it u gucci

I understand how this would help, and I appreciate it, but I have a frontal lisp and when I try to fix my S words like this, it feels like my tongue is too big to fit in my mouth to say S words correctly, is it true it can't be fixed?
Kyle Jaeger Same, when I close my teeth and try to make an s it just doesn't work
HI Kyle, sorry to take TOO long to reply to your question. Otherwise check our next /s/ video here: th-cam.com/video/INSIEXcEBpA/w-d-xo.html and subscribe to the channel as there is more /s/ videos coming in the pipeline.

can an underbite cause lisp?
I swear I am the only person that hears my lisp all the time, nobody else hears it
I feel the same way. 😂
Everyone let’s say “I sell seashells on the seashore”.
Wish me luck! That’s so challenging!!!
What if you have gap in teeth

Do you have any advice for the shorter 'S' sound as well?
this jus helped

YAYAYAAAYA!
