This is a relic from the era when Pioneer was at its absolute peak. they just've won the receiver wars and they engineers run Pioneer, spending insane research money on improving equipment. Every 6 months there were new releases of amps and receivers and it was like Apple releasing a new iPhone today. People just could not wait for the new Pioneer.

Very interesting comment to read and I am sure that would also be an interesting video to make actually. I am born in the 70ties so can't really talk so much about the spirit of that era and at that time I was more into computers.

How could you possibly put Apple in the same sentence with Pioneer? When did Pioneer ever release a new product claiming to revolutionize Hifi with something that they didn't invent? Apple didn't invent the touchscreen phone, that title goes to IBM, the iPod was not the first digital portable music player either, they are about to announce the in screen finger print unlock on their latest iPhone, can't wait to see how they are going to try and claim it as their own invention, LoL it's already been out for more than a year! And unlike Apple, I can plug any Pioneer product into any other brand without a dongle! I personally would never buy a product that tries to lock me into their ecosystem... That's why Apple products are band from my house!

Thank you for sharing this, especially for the ones like me. I was born after 1990 and I got one 508 a few years ago. Love it, replaced all the caps with much better ones, some noisy preamp transistors, replaced the finals with the original ones, reconditioned the pots, did all the soldering joints and many more. Great piece.

Restoration taking something that needs tender love and care and making it work if it improves it's a restoration some people don't get it. nice video.

My mom has the top of the line everything pioneer stashed somewhere in the garage. I used to have fun as a teenager hooking it up. It was heavy especially the speakers needed 2 people to carry

Dude a full top of the line system would be worth well over $10,000 after restoration. I'd go look for it if I was you.

Great piece of gear ! Its airy and powerful. Its has so much ableness to reproduce musicality - And this comes from a guy used to 70´s totl H/K,Tandberg and Sansui. A real bargain without frills and without real status amongst the collectors. Get one ! It puts the much wanted over priced mid tier Marantzes from the 70´s to shame

Job well done! -I bought my SA-508 used at early 80's from band mate. After a few more modern amps it's again my main amp. Phono, CD/MD "tape deck" and laptop TH-cam main sources, large DIY speakers. Could use some deoxit on pots and switches. I really like these power meters.

Thanks Pekka, my SA-508 spent a year on a shelf wrapped in plastic. But now it has moved into my office space to make working from home more enjoyable. There will be a second part where I will do a full capacitor replacement.

@@ClassicHiFiReviews I was sure a month ago, when amp started fading after power continuously on for two weeks, that capacitors are dying. But after two days rest and cooling, it recovered! I guess it overheated. I was sure power capacitors were dying. That day will come anyway, so I'll be following your work on capacitor replacement. I suppose it's the big ones, which might fail first.

They sure got cheap with that heat sink, 4 digit series completely different, waiting for a SA 6800, EBAY special, a little thrashed, but I will take care of that. I Like your Reel to Reel.

The corrosion of the knobs CAN be removed !
Try a ultra sonic cleaner with citric acid !

Is the front plate clear coated? Soon, SA-706 I purchased will be delivered to me, and it has few scratches. I wonder how to fix that.

The amplifier has vents on the top for cooling. Covering those vents with the tuner is not a great idea. Handsome amplifier no matter what its age.

Classic HiFi Reviews because you never rubbed alcohol on the face plate.

I had bad luck with a fine Akai 1055 reciever. The print is applied with silk screen technologi. Its basically a thin layer of surface paint . I think all the 70´s reciever exept may Sansui (Engraved) used this.

    Désolé !
Pour moi ce n'est pas une restauration !!!
C'est simplement un grand nettoyage !!!

For me it is not a restoration !
    It's just a great cleaning !!!

    • @ClassicHiFiReviews

I agree that it is not a full restoration with replacing caps. But it was visually in a pretty bad shape. Significantly more effort than normal cleaning was required.
