Snake in a refrigerator!!

  • At Wildlife Aid, we only deal with British wildlife. However, there are always exceptions...
    This time, it was an animal Simon is more than a little scared of; a snake! To make matters worse, this snake was a very very big python!! It was curled into the back of a fridge! Lets just say that the family was very surprised, and a little bit scared, to find such an animal there! It must have escaped from a pet shop or a private home.
    Simon gathered all his courage and successfully rescued his first ever python!

      I've stroked a very large rock python, it took two people to lift him but he felt very nice and was quite well behaved other than the sheer size being hard to handle! He was from a local rescue/display place and I think the idea was to show and educate people about them. I thought he was lovely although obviously not so much as a pet for the average person.

    • @Fyralynn
      @Fyralynn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChrisAndCats I was allowed to touch a snake behind the scene as a child at a zoo. It didnt start my love for snakes, but it did help me consider getting into snake keeping. Even amongst snake keepers, you'll find few who can/want one of the biggest constrictors as a pet.
      Especially when you get one with a sassy attitude.

    • @ChrisAndCats
      @ChrisAndCats 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Fyralynn he felt rather nice, and put up with being stroked without trying to go away so I don't think we were annoying him too much! I think you have to have an owner willing to invest proper time and money for exotic pets like these, it's sad when they are mistreated because they're harder than people thought (that of course applies to any animal). I hear you about pets with attitude though, my avatar is like that, she's a wild born rescue. Vet changed her card from Stripey to Naughty Stripey (also answers to Pants) and I can honestly say I have Dennis the Menace in fur. I love her like that though so I get their point!

      Thanks Ann, and be careful with some of the snakes in Florida, they are beautiful but can be quite deadly, kinda like possums, when I first saw one I was thinking aww, and expecting one of those cute things with the big eyes, only to be confronted with a slavering, hissing beast with way too many teeth lol

    • @AnnBellinger
      @AnnBellinger 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am definitely not a snake person. At least in florida for the most part it's pretty easy to tell the difference between the venomous and non. I am VERY careful.
      I have rescued many an opossum! Their reputation is much worse than their reality. A mother opossum with babies can be defensive. An animal that's main defense is playing "opossum" generally wants to avoid a real fight. The hissing, growling and showing of teeth is to scare you away so they can escape. They definitely will fight if they feel cornered. So anyone reading this that is not an experienced wildlife rescue person keep your distance!
      Do you have opossums there?
      They are our resident marsupials. :-)
      I love that I am able to help rescue some of our wildlife here. Animals are so amazing.

It took my step-dad and my brother two hours to get it out of the closet and into a big container so we could call someone in the morning to pick it up.

    I do a lot of pythons.
    They get it very quickly if you are gentle with them, then they don't try and bite (usually), especially ex-pets.

    What a cute little lady I'm glad she found a home! Was it a ball python? They are pretty harmless as long as your not a small mammal. The bites hurt like the sickens but that little thing couldn't do too much damage. I say little because Burmese pythons can grow to be huge. They are an invasive species here in the U.S (Florida) and are known for eating pets.

    I'm politely laughing my ass off at the description XD I love you guys for the wonderful work you do, but there really is no reason to freak out so much about snakes. This was just a ball python, a small species regularly kept as a pet. Perfectly harmless and docile. Just because it has 'python' in the name doesn't mean it's dangerous ;) That said, Simon did a great job, especially seeing as he's afraid of snakes. It takes a lot of courage to handle an animal that freaks you out, so absolutely well done to you, Simon! It's quite an accomplishment, and we're all proud of you :D
    Tip for the future: if you want a snake to move forward, touch or tickle it gently on its body, it usually does the trick. The snake will want to move away from the stimulus and will likely shift itself accordingly. Not a good idea if the snake is displaying signs of aggression, though - especially if it is a large one. Also, grabbing a snake behind the head typically doesn't need to be done (unless it's venomous or behaving agressively), since it not only stresses the animal out, but also causes it to start pulling backwards (to get out of your grasp), which is often not what you want (like in this video).
    Source: I've been a reptile owner for close to 5 years now.

    I once found a snake skin from a rat snake that measured 10 foot 9 and 1/4 inches long. My boss called me a liar, so I left it on his desk. The scream from the office girl was delightful.

    This is a small ball python, an easy and docile snake. You have to pinch its tail and let its head find a hiding spot in your bag. Also a source of heat is a way to attract them, such as a heating pad. No need to panic, this is the easiest and sweetest of the constrictors. Only gets to be 5-6 ft in length, easy to handle. You want to approach it from the back and top and firmly hold its neck while supporting the heavy body below with other hand. Don't wrestle it, work with its wiggling, go along. The main reason a snake stiffens around your arm, is because its using its tail as a leg, so top half can move forward. It is not trying to choke you. It is trying to get away and move without the use of legs. Commonly misunderstood action. if a snake wanted to choke you, it would do it so rapidly you would be in its coils before you were aware. Lightening fast. A slow hold is not a choke. These small constrictors are very sweet and easily frightened of you. Not the Burmese Pythons, Retics, Peruvian Boas, and Anacondas - different animal entirely.
    In case of a rescue, the first thing you do is to give it a good soak in very tepid water in your bathtub, so it can rehydrate through its skin and have a good poop and pee. Bowel movements are important for snakes. You approach a snake from the back not front. It should not see you hand, as it will think it is food (eye sight poor). After a good soak, you can feed it a thawed out rat. Rat should be completely thawed out.
    The constrictors have a body temp of 80F, so if water feels warm to you, it is very warm or hot to them. Lukewarm water to soak. Cool water to drink. After feeding, do not handle it at all. Let it rest for 2-3 days with a warm mat and towel over it. Ambient room temp or cage temp should be 85 - 90F, with a warm spot on one end and cool the other end. Setup is everything - you are recreating the Amazon forest in temp and humidity for these snakes. Pricey setup, but once you have it down, its good. This is where most of us fail. Everything else is easy. There is a LOT to learn about reptiles, even more than birds.
    If you are slow and gentle and don't startle the poor guy, he will never bite or bother you. Ball Pythons are very docile and gentle and shy. The handling and letting it climb around something moves its bowels nicely. Handling is important. Plus they love their throats stroked, and bellies stroked. It tickles them and they twitch their tails. How I miss my boa constrictor! Wish I had that ball python. Love them so much.

    It's not the head of a python you've got to worry about. A really pissed off python is far more likely to break your arm by constricting than to bite. Pythons are actually difficult to really piss off, they're pretty docile. My guess is he just wanted a nice warm place to sleep. I want to know how he got to the UK lol.

    What a gorgeous Ball/Royal Python. It must have been someone's pet because it looks well-fed and glossy. Some fool must have either lost it or maybe even let it loose. There are thousands of exotic animals released into the Everglades in Florida every year, so much so that it's become a serious problem and they have to be caught.

    I think England is safe from the pythons becoming an invasive species - I don't think they can tolerate the cold. Might be wrong. But the cursed things have made a home in the Everglades of Florida and are moving north. My point is - if they could survive in England, you might want to put up a permanent import block on them. Great video by the way and I love how Simon handled it all. Silly snake, didn't understand when he was being rescued!

      Adder/viper is the only venomous snake in UK. Grass snakes look similar but are completely harmless. I'm not sure where this noodle escaped from but at least he/she found a new home.
      With vipers it's enough if you can get their head pinned down or in a tube so they can't bite you. Some gloves and rubber boots can be helpful too.

    that just looks like a general royal python. best thing to do is poke them in their tail til they move forward and try and catch them round their bodies. grabbing their heads results in what we saw here where they try and retreat backwards. if you want the snake to go forwards, poke it (gently of course!) in its tail, you want it to go backwards, gently touch its head. I have corns, sometimes when I'm cleaning them they'll poke their heads out of the cage and try and escape, all I need to do is put my hand in front of them and they naturally retreat :)
