Hey everyone I am finally back to making videos! Today’s video is a tutorial just in time for inktober! How to use dip pens! I show the supplies I use at first so if you want to get right into the tutorial part skip to 08:11 if you have any questions about anything I didn’t cover or didn’t make clear just leave me a comment :) hope this is helpful!
I bought the white ph Martin and it was thick and weird but I had seen others saying you need to water it down, so I never thought of it as old or ruined, I don't use it though, its just too thick and I have to water it down soooo much its just not worth it, I go for white gouache instead as you said. But again, its not old, right? about your little jars with diamonds on the lid, do you think it would work with those jars if I don't use ink regularly? I looked like the jars were about the same size as the ink bottle, and since I don't use it a lot I think it would dry up in a separate jar? perhaps if I used ink every day? any tips for me as a starter using dip nibs, how to make the drawing process a fun experience without all the messy stuff around the ink. Its kind of the reason to my hesitation and why don't go for the dippen instead of a micron. Very nice video! Gonna subscribe 😄
Great video, thanks for showing the line size from the various nibs! I think that if you dip your nib a little bit further, just to cover the eye then the ink will flow longer and you can dip less often. That little hole in the nib acts like a reservoir for the ink. At least that's the way it works with calligraphy nibs.
Thanks so much! Very informative! Someone just gave me a whole bunch of nibs and handles, had no idea what went with what! Never did this before ever.. Looks like fun, can't wait to try it!!
I'm just starting with inks and nibs, etc., so this is very useful; I think you covered every question I had; thanks for sharing all this info! I did find the music to be competing with your voice, so I kept scrolling back to replay certain parts.
Your video was perfect for what I need right now. I haven't touched inking since high school and I'm many years past that. ;-) The basics, details and simplicity is great! Thank you for this video! I will be back to watch this video more than once.
Also if you put it in a smaller container or put a wet napkin over the top or parchment paper or cling wrap anything that makes it airtight helps it to stay functioning
Its probably just me whos making u nervous and making you mix up and loose your words. My energy and your energy are dancing together. And your voice is my healer. I literally feel my body feeling better and lighter. How weird!!! Can this be possible? Im getting scared, safe me my queen😬
@4:53 you can rehydrate your inks you know. I didn't know if you knew or not it's all new to me and my grandfather died and I got his old set and a lot of the inks were dried up and the cartridges for a fountain pen I just happened to look it up and you can rehydrate them all and I saw that you can buy stuff to make your own which is essentially what's left when they dry up as I understand it. Anyway it works for me
I use that Pen--White ink on my Isographs, is also a good idea to stick a couple of stainless steel balls as agitators and give it a shake twice or thrice a week, should be enough to keep it nice and mixed.
I quite like to add a little bit of brown to black, it gives it s slight brown and makes it pretty, I use a separate jar for mixing this because I don't want to use an entire black ink jar for that
Hi, im just starting with dip pen nubs. Why they can not draw?no ink is coming down? I just buy the deleter set today. I dip the pen nib, but when i try to draw, the ink doesnt go down. Any reason why?
Thank you for this video and I apologize if you said it during filming, but I must have missed it. I use inks with watercolors, wouldn't adding water to the ink somehow compromise its 'waterproof-ness' in some capacity?
Karijn's Watercolors that’s ok I didn’t mention that, :) honestly I have never thought about that before but really good question! I’m not so sure about the science but for the dr ph martins black ink I’ve been using adding water hasn’t compromised it at all. I use my mix of dark grey ink with watercolors all the time and haven’t had any problems :) I do give it lots of time to dry but otherwise all good. Last year for inktober I also added bunches of water to make ink washes and was able to go over that with watercolor too without any black coming back up. For other brands I’m not sure if it would be a problem or not but maybe do a few tests before hand to see how it behaves with water and without :) good luck and don’t worry I’m totally ok with questions :) I’m happy to help if I can ^^ thanks for watching!
They need to make dedicated, stylish, inkwells again. I buy alot of cheap black India ink and the container it comes in sucks. It's tall, tipsy, and large mouthed and I've spent hours cleaning and lost a pair of shorts to it. It needs to be transfered and I'd like something specific and stylish to transfer it to that is made for the purpose.
I found one in an antique store recently for $20. Or you could try websites that sells Asian writing supplies, they still have a lot of traditional writing/drawing tools.
I’m using fountain pens for taking notes in the college.... I wish I will try this dip pens but.... I think it could be hard to take a lot of notes with then,right?... anyway, nice video
Thanks! I think fountain pens are the way to go when it comes to writing on the go, it’s very similar to dip pens just without the dip so more portable, but the nib is very similar to the larger nibs you would find for dip pens. The larger nibs are also easier to write with while some of the smaller nibs, like the Maru, are much harder to control for writing curved lines. You could always play around with dip pens when your writing at home, there’s a ton of nibs you can get for writing calligraphy also but fountain pens are great too ^^
Fabulous video! I bought a kuretake set as a treat ready for Inktober. Same ones as you have used above. Got some sumi Inks too. One thing I am nervous about is doing washes. I already had a few W & N drawing Inks and some Magic Acrylic Inks so I am planning to use those. Currently hunting videos to help 😁
Autumn Roberts I just add a bit of water and use a flat brush to do washes but it can be tricky with ink vs watercolor. I rage quick inkwash a few times haha and switched to black watercolor but last year I made 3-5 mixes of inkwash with variations of water what helped me a bit :) it doesn’t seem to layer as well as other mediums though and drys permanent so it takes so time to adjust. Good luck :)
Hi, may i know if a pen holder is universal for whatever nib you have? I recently bough a set of nibs forgetting to purchase the holder that comes with it. And now im wondering if my existing oen hodler which is from another brand can hold the new nibs. The problem is I cant test it because my pen holders are at my dorm and im here stuck at home due to the quarantine. So should I by the pen holder or wait for until I am able to retrieve the pen holders from my dorm? Thank you
flaneuseu all of the Japanese pen holders I’ve used work with the Japanese nibs like deleter, tachikawa etc and the black curvy speedball nib holder works great too the only pen holder I had that didn’t fit anything expect it’s own brand nibs was the speedball small brown holder. It’s so small it only fits the speedball small nib from the sets it doesn’t fit any of the Japanese nibs. Hope that helps :)
ii have watched, tried and seem incompetent...cannot get tachikawa holder and nibs to do anything. yes ii cleaned the nibs first, tried shorter and then deeper dips, then resorted to my waterbrush to not waste Windsor Newton calligraphy inks...what's the deal? Esp the gold ink...
Any ink you like or can get. I prefer speedball India ink or Higgins waterproof with watercolor and markers. They work well and you can get minis for travel and speedball has large bottles too. Also Windex is a great nib cleaner and you get 200x more than the commercial nib cleaners and it's practically the same. Hope this helps sorry nobody got back to you sooner!
First of all, no. Dip pens aren't cheap. Fineliner can be refilled and are surprisingly accommodating to nearly any type of ink. On top of that, even the more durable dip pen nibs wear out with about 100 hours of use. "Better" dip pen ink, such as Deleter, is also not cheap.

I keep my nibs on a self-adhesive magnet bar I glued to the wall.

I tried doing the same with my brushes, but most are made of aluminium and brass.

Yeah.... unless you’re in the middle of a pandemic and it’s all gone. XD
I can relate :(
I recently got some really cheap ones (8$) from a store called Jerry’s Artarama might be one near u

I just got my first dip pen set as a gift and this video was definitely very helpful when learning about dip pens.
While this may be a couple of years old I found it very useful and learned a lot.
My main issue is pressure (especially when drawing curvy lines)
This girl has to have the most peaceful and most beautiful voice I've ever heard. I can listen to her talk all day. She sounds absolutely adorable.

Thank you so much for the reply, I'll try to experiment with my own ink and see how it behaves when diluted. :D
Thanks I got a tachikawa thingy for Christmas and pretty excited :D
Luckyyyyy, my mom said she couldn’t find any in local stores so she didn’t buy it-

Super helpful! Thank you!
Can you provide a link to where someone can buy the jars that you have?
Which one is better nikko or tachikawa nibs?!

These are mostly used for manga art but that doesn’t necessarily mean they can’t be used for writing so I say you should give them a try

Autumn Roberts no problem :)
Hi, from Bosnia! Can transform from this pen into a pen for Arabic calligraphy?
How do you dilute the thick white inks enough to flow in the nib? Do you load the nib then dip in water or dilute ink in a separate container? Thx
have you tried the potato method for nibs?

I cannot find the box of nibs you have on amazon etc I may be spelling the name wrong..is it Mara nibs ? this is a incredible video , thank you.
Maru, Saji and G nibs, better buy Deleter trial set pen (comes with Nikko nibs)
Nice video girl, thank you.
are the nibs interchangeable among different brands?
it was very helpful
How do you know how much water to add to the ink? Thanks. :3
I just do it by feel. Add a bit, swirl and see how the consistency of the ink in the bottle has changed and test the color on some paper.
Another video said the hole is the reservoir and to dip the pen past the hole to fill the reservoir..? Thank you, very informative video!0)
yeah fill it all the way up to the top of the hole

I'm left handed so i feel I would have to learn to write backwards if I wanted to use these
I've heard some people say that right handed people should start from the top left and down and lefties from the top right and down.
