    THANKS FOR THE GUIDANCE, YOU'RE A FUN COUPLE. I AM IN THE PROCESS OF FORMULATING TWO QUERY LETTERS, ONE FOR FICTION AND ONE FOR NON FICTION. I AM NOT WRITING HOLY WEIT SO I REWRITE INNUMERABLE TIMES UNTIL THE NARRATIVE IS SMOOTH AND ECONOMICAL. THANKS AGAIN YOU TWO.

    You guys are quirky. I like that. I am currently writing a fantasy thriller. I calculate the final word count to be between 85 000 to 95 000 words.

    This is so timely as I am editing again. I have a relatively easy time trimming dialogue and narration, but it's so hard to cut out scenes.

      So glad timing worked out for this one! Whole scenes are like little babies. Very hard to cut!

    I never thought word count would be a reason for a publisher to say no. Your videos are very information and funny, thank you!

    Hi Arielle and David, I’m Candra Anaya. Nice to meet you.😊 My writing buddy introduced me to your ANGA competition and I’m thrilled to say I submitted! 🎉 Then I subscribed to your You Tube channel and am having fun getting to know The Book Doctors. Y’all are great! Ok- I must ask…… is that tiny picture of the kitty cat the exact SAME PICTURE as the big picture of the kitty cat in your other videos?? I am a total cat person, if you couldn’t tell. 😻 Also, I must point out my great attention to detail since that trait would be of service in your ANGA competition, don’t ya think? 😜 Ok, I better sign off before I start name dropping my two writer friends who know you. I wouldn’t want you to think I was trying to sway you into voting for me as a semifinalist because of such talented mutual writer friends. 😜 I’m quite certain my writing can stand on its own. I hope you are having a beautiful moment whenever it is you read this! Take care. P.S. Since you don’t know me from Adam, please let me say I can have a very cheeky, fun, sarcastic side to my writing, which I attempted here in this message. I send this all in good fun. 😊 Though I really would like to know about the cat…😽

      It's the same cat! This is Ernie. You can look him up. I have a great story about this, but it's too long to share in a TH-cam comment. If we meet in person, make sure to ask me. And thank you for these sweet and funny words!

      @@TheBookDoctors I can look up Ernie the cat?! Oh my goodness, that’s awesome! I will definitely ask you about the story in person when our paths cross. 😻 I hope y’all are having so much fun with the submissions. I’m off to google Ernie the cat……😸

    So, I'm currently writing a fictional western, and I'm currently doing 2,000 - 4,000 words for each chapter (at around 16,000 words). I plan on doing around 11 or 15 chapters, would that end up too short?

    • @TheBookDoctors
      @TheBookDoctors  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. At least for traditional publishers. If you self-publish, it doesn't matter.

    After a couple of months of querying and only a few dozen so far I finally got a response that wasn't an standardized autoreply. The agent suggested that my book was too dialogue heavy and required more sensory description, subtext, and emotion. I was already aware of this criticism, but my word count is currently 98900 and it is a book targeted at ages 14+. I was desperately trying to keep my word count below 100k. Believe me when I say I've cut everything I can cut. I was lethal with how much I've cut already. I WANT to add more, I really do. I feel damned if I do and damned if I don't.

    • @TheBookDoctors
      @TheBookDoctors  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's great feedback. If your book is YA in the scoff/fantasy category, you can go over 100K. But we would also bet that there's more you can cut!

    • @FablestoneSeries
      @FablestoneSeries 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheBookDoctors LOL, you would be correct. since the time i wrote this i've cut at least another 5000 words. Mostly by making descriptions more efficient and cutting excessive filler words in my dialogue. My methods at reducing word count are getting more and more ruthless. I've cut so much backstory elements. I've cut my story engine (I started writing book 2 and turns out i won't need my story engine after all). But as I cut clutter i add subtext, and my word count has crept back up to 98700. It still needs more subtext but at this stage pushing my word count up to 100k seems like the only alternative I have left.

    I love this channel! It is extremely helpful as I'm working on my fiction query letter. I noticed how you mentioned not to begin your query with your word count. I have two books on query letters and getting a literary agent. One of them gives several examples of a good query, and each of the examples begins with a brief sentence including the title, word count, and genre. Could you specify where in the end of the query letter? Do you prefer it after the pitch? I think some of our sources may be leading us astray! (WOMP!!)

    • @TheBookDoctors
      @TheBookDoctors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, right after the pitch is great!

    I’ve written something small. Would it look ridiculous to have a book with 2,200 words? I just want to print something I can call my own.

    • @TheBookDoctors
      @TheBookDoctors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you self-publish, you can make it any size you want! Also, there is a precedent for what are essentially adult picture books that have very small word counts.

    Hello book doctors,
    I would love to create a book on my journey starting forex to becoming a master trader, as well as, educate people on how to do the same as me with step by step. I would love to do more research on the type of book I am writing, but I just don’t know. Can you help me on telling me what type of book is this?

    • @TheBookDoctors
      @TheBookDoctors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, we don't know what forex is. But we're assuming if this is a how-to book on becoming a master trader that it would go in the business section of the bookstore.

    Thanks so much for the video!!! I have a non-fiction book about my time in a Japanese prison which I cut from 120k to 107k words. I got ZERO responses from my first round of query letters (at 120k) and I'm wondering if I should cut it down below the "magic" 100k mark -- any thoughts??? (ps: thanks again!! This process is driving me insane...)

    • @TheBookDoctors

      Word count is definitely high. But lack of any response points to problems with the query letter. Rewrite and try again!

    • @TheBookDoctors
      @TheBookDoctors  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Word length is typically around the same for each genre regardless of if it's a religious publisher or not. Let us know if that answers your question, please.
