Hope you guys enjoy this brand new lesson featuring Arrtx pastels and my three stage process for pastel painting. Let me know what you think because I love hearing from you.
The learning process is something that will separate the art lover, from the artist; when an artist that truly love's their craft, the process is a labor of love, over choice. ❤️
I am a re-awakened artist and I have fallen in love with Pastels. In my early 50's I decided to pursue my passion for painting which began in high school and my earlier years in college so long ago. Life expectations took me in a "so not me" direction and now I'm getting back on track 😊 I began with watercolor, transitioned to acrylic, and still something was missing, until now! I was directed to your channel because I love the artistic expression of Monet and was doing research. I have never heard of Pastels until now. But the very effects, techniques, and natural approach I was attempting with my self taught acrylics couldn't be executed but THIS I sense is the right medium for me. Especially the finished look and impression that these paintings give. The layering, values, and colors- this is immersive. The outcome can be dreamy, yet bursting forth with expression and hazy form. I absolutely love it. ❤ I am a new subscriber and am thinking about joining your Patreon! I like your style of teaching, information sharing, and personality. I can learn in the comfort of my own home. 😊Lastly, I am amazed at your love for the most high [God] as well and the fact you aren't afraid to say it. ❤
Your comment is so exciting! What are you describe is much like many of the reasons why I love soft pastels so much. I’m so glad you have discovered this delightful medium and I pray my teaching can bless you on your pastel painting journey! God bless you and happy painting.
I have gotten away from doing studies for my painting projects. Alain Picard is another artist that relies on doing the preparation for the final painting. I am not a beginner, I have not considered myself one for over 30 years. Now I have never used soft pastels and they are a completely new way to work and it has been an acutely humbling experience! I am appreciative of your generosity and sharing of your expertise in these videos, thank you. You are truly inspirational and so generous. Please take care and keep sharing your pastel techniques, have a lovely day!
Thank you, Susan! This is so helpful and beautiful! You are such a blessing in the way you share these tips so thoughtfully and generously! We artists are so blessed because of the work you are doing. 😊♥️
What a great starter set. Wish it had been around when I started. My first set was Mungyo and, while the texture and quality was pretty good, the pallette selection was weird. Beautiful piece, thanks for sharing!
Dear Susan, this is absolutely beautiful!! Once again you have shared your gift so beautifully, and gently!! I truly hope to try this as you make it seem so possible!! Thank you, and Fod bless you!!
YAY!! Thank you! @nanab9963 Comments like this are part of why I do this. I love inspiring others, especially in their art journey! Thank you for your sweet comment! Happy painting!
I’ve been painting with watercolor and acrylics and have finally decided to stick with soft pastels. I love that I can still use my other paints for the backgrounds in pastel painting..
Such an expressive painting I really enjoyed this video. Tonal/value sketches are important for balance & tone, a little tip I was given was to look at my sketches in a mirror it shows up any errors!
Hi I really liked the beautiful twilight effect you achieved. I discovered colourfix paper❤❤❤its so perfect. Any thoughts on Unison? I want to buy the landscape set but now I'm thinking about the Artx. The colors are beautiful. The sky and water colors you achieved are so unique
YAY!! Thank you! @ILuvCaroline Comments like this are part of why I do this. I love insiring others, especially in their art journey! It's so nice to know that my lessons are helping others with different meduiums, too! Thank you for your support! Blessings!
I have found using 2 coats of clear gesso works on watercolor or heavy weight paper. If I want to tint the paper a different color, I apply 2 coats prior to the clear gesso.
Thanks, Im a beginner and was wondering about what paper and what coloured paper to use. It’s amazing how the paper affects the way you apply the pastel. I have this Hahnemuhle pastel paper, 45lbs paper; quite thin; can’t apply too much but it has a nice outcome if applied lightly. Thanks for your teaching.
Hi Marlene, I’m glad you liked the tutorial and you are so right about the type of paper affecting the final results. I thought I was doing something wrong when I first started painting on unsanded surfaces and then I found out that sanded pastel papers allow for much more layering and vibrant color. I actually now enjoy painting on unsanded surfaces, but when I was first, starting out, it was quite difficult. Have fun and keep learning, sweetheart!

Very pretty. Fun to hear about the pastels and paper too.
Simple yet neautiful
Awesome video as always 🥰 Blue Earth soft pastels also engrave the numbers directly on them…. They’re amazing and buttery soft

Thank you, Jennifer, your comment blessed me so much!
I am working in acrylics right now. Your general process and approach are really valuable to me in avoiding the harsh edge effect of acrylics.
Wonderful! I find that so many things apply across different mediums. I just love soft edges.
Wonderful, thank you so much, Susan!

I use oil pastels. I just have to tweak a few things when I try to duplicate some of these paintings.

Yes, I have used this technique as well. I too like toning the watercolor paper first. So neat to have so many ways to make our own pastel surfaces.

It’s called Jackie simmonds complete course in pastel workbook
Yes!! Exactly, Robert! That's it!
Oh, dear…”God.” bless you!!
You are so kind
Did SUSAN curate a box of pastels? Who was the maker?
No, I haven’t done that yet… But I’ve been trying to find a SoftPastel manufacturer to work with. I’ve got something planned though.
It seems to me that u could get 2 studies on one sheet by cutting it in half to save paper.
Thanks for that input, @janisdolan5703! You absolutely could!! Happy painting, sweetheart!
Early pencil sketch of the dark trees on the left looks like a dog.
Ha ha... I love finding hidden shapes like that.
