Yes this works but if you use developer mode Google Play apps will no longer update themselves. the only way to get updates on apps from the Google Play Store is to run Chrome OS in normal mode. if you use developer mode you will still get updates for Chrome OS but not the play store.

I have some extremely important files and I am not going to risk them by reinstalling the OS!!! What's it with WhatsApp?!?! Revert ChromeOS back to normal? Do a powerwash. chromebook will be wipes and restored to original state. Please note that your chromebook will be wipes completely. make backup of necessary files. Files stored on google drive automatically are backup to google drive.
Well. There is more to just downloading APK. Game needs to have support for device you are planing to play on. Device needs to be powerful enough to run the game.

Skizzy Starz you can't install Google playstore. That feature must be anabled by Google over chrome os update or changing chrome os channel from stable to developer channel.

Sorry for long delay on replay. Missed your comment so how :( If you go to android settings - > about device and tap 7 times on Build Number. You should see small message telling you that DEV mode is enabled. Check then if that option is not grey.
crystal hall with my Chromebook. SD Card is always inside the slot. I don't take it out during developer mode activation and after. Just make sure you have all your important files saved on SD Card, everything that's saved on internal storage will be deleted.

Because you can get viruses from apps.

Or you can download the apk on a normal computer with anti-virus then usb the apk file onto your chromebook

As at the moment: if you turn developer mode off - app won't be deleted. This can change with future Chrome OS updates.
