One of the very few grooveboxes I pulled the trigger on buying new that I have absolutely no regrets about. I've done so much on this machine and the ESX1. Great video Ron! Happy New Year!
I love the EMX1. It has been the staple of many of my life setups for a long time. Unfortunately, it broke. I have to get it fixed. The low learning curve and it's versatility makes it a great recommendation for those, who want get their first hardware. I bought the EMX1 used, and it came with the original Electro Harmonics tubes. These tubes distorted more than adding analog warmth. So, I replaced them with JJ Electronics tubes, which made a huge difference. I strongly recommend this upgrade.
@@fender1000100 Yes. It is pretty easy to do, if you know how. I did this many years ago by following instructions on TH-cam. Here is a video, which is very similar to the one I watched back then: th-cam.com/video/t8UBKXd_JdE/w-d-xo.html Good luck!
Can comfirm the JJ tube upgrade was worth it. Smoother break up, more even harmonics....can drive it harder without it sounding too whatever it was with the AX7s
thanks buddy i just picked one up this helped quite a bit, also got super exited you got to like OG Final Fantasy noises which is some thing I would love to recreate.
This machine have a soul and is alive… when you make a track it looks like the whole track is dancing and doing some nice swing by its own where everything is blending together… i love it! Thanks for the arpeggio tips buddy, you motivated me to explore more about. The opportunities are endless, it opened a whole dimension to me! Cheers
Glad to see you're doing emx videos. My deluge is off to the repair shop soon and I'll be breaking out mine to do some work on. Not many other current videos on it lol. Good stuff, Ron!
I have 2 of these, selling one of em today. They both have custom wrapped faceplates. The used one Has a galaxy wrap. The new one has a Matrix Coding wrap. Perfect for a custom look and protects the O.g. Blue under it. So good to see people still making videos on this piece! I use mine DAILY!
changed tubes on mine a while ago, it totally worth it. You have to calibrate the tubes after the upgrade. theres instructions online of how to create the tool needed and how to access to the service menu for this procedure. I LOVE this instrument and will never sell it, its a staple on my music studio setup.
Is it possible to change the Arpeggiator type (up, down, random etc)? I can't find a way to do it and it doesn't seem to be in the manual, so i don't think it's possible??
My dearest Ron... no no you are wrong. What you do on this vid is what i did at first on my sampling esx1. (How lucky we are with this arp. .. and yes with memoryman echo its one killer....)) cheeers m8. Créative mate. Take care.
its so funny to me how i've made upwards of 1000 patterns on my electribe and i never used the transpose button more than maybe once lol. Thanks for showing that.

damn yours looks like brand new .. do you have smart media or sdcard??? have mine since 09 and meanwhile i can't read any of the part labels ... but it is now like a body part i will take it with me into my grave ;D
I have one of this in it’s box… I have used only like 10 times, fully functional. Maybe is time to use it with my midi controller and do some stuff in Ableton, or sell it!
@@NeonArtifact How did yours break? I just got done fixing mine, including power adapter, though I'm going to replace the master vol, as it's got a little channel drift on low vol, not perfect, but sounds great at normal volume.
@@sidthetech_USA Thx for the reply. I can get it to turn on, but it randomly has knob jitters and will skip values and jump on its own. I tried to unscrew the top metal piece but it didn't relieve any pressure? Any ideas? Also, where do you get parts for this to replace? Is that what you had to do?
@@NeonArtifact hey Charles, The knob jitter is from the contacts in the potentiometer (knob) not getting solid contact. The potentiometers report a digital value to the controller (or cpu if you will), and when these metal contacts in the knob are not making solid contact, you get erratic signaling. Much the same on old volume knobs, after a while the surface on the metals gets a thin layer of corrosion or dirt, and when the contacts rub over this, then the signal is noisy, making crackling popping sound or in your case erratic digital signal. One remedy is to wear off the corrosion by physically moving the knob back and forth enough. You might see this clear up. Especially if you can get isopropyl 91% or more alcohol in the contacts, helps clear the grime. Worse case you will need to replace those knobs (pots) with new(er) ones, and that involves opening up the whole unit, removing old and resoldering new knobs. I just found this place online that sells parts: syntar.com , and I actually have some new [potentiometers] coming today to finalize repair of my EMX! I'm getting bad channel outputs because my Main Vol potentiometer isn't making the 2 channel contact it should be, And the big selector knob gets a little jittery as well, but only when I am turning it. The potentiometers are about $8 ea + 6 for shipping. So you might want to consider getting all you need in one go, if you are going to repair it.
@@sidthetech_USA Thanks so much for the detailed response. You are quite knowledgeable when it comes to this machine. I forgot about Syntar, wow, i actually got some rubber pads to replace on my KP3 Kaoss Pad from there. Had no idea they also sold Electribe stuff. So i am at work, but when i get home... I should move the knobs to get rid of the grime and if that doesn't work... Try the alcohol which i can dilute with water i am guessing and use a q-tip to clean the potentiators. Not sure if i need to order anything. Lemme know if you fix your output problem. I have the red ESX and blue EMX as well. The audio levels sound different for me as well.
i love this machine. the only thing i dont like is the use of effect, it is limited to 3 effects . it could be great if every of the 14 parts could use its own effect
I sold my EMX when I heard there was going to be a new electribe. A completely stupid move looking back on it especially when it was one of my go-to instruments live. Sadly the Electribe 2, although more than capable, lacks the magic of the EMX. I am happily reunited with the emx1 - one of Korg's masterpieces. Maybe someday Korg will release an improvement of the emx-1 where it matters and leave the rest alone 🙂
@@RonCavagnaro yeah for me getting the E2 was like breaking up with the cute and really cool girl because the very popular rich girl wanted to date you and then you realize that even though she's got more bling and super hot, you made a regrettable decision lol

What is the difference, I really like the concept of having tubes inside a decent drum machine, but I dunno which one to choose ?
