I find it interesting how informed shoppers of gaming computers (including laptops of course) are as compared to other segments of the market. For example, if you're waiting in line at an Apple store, you'll often hear people saying they will buy the 'new bigger phone' or the 'smaller laptop.' I would say maybe 25 percent of them actually understand differences other than size, which is just crazy considering how much people are spending. My point is, I feel like someone buying a gaming laptop understands all the components, upgradeability, power limits, battery life, refresh rate, color gamut, color accuracy --- and they often shop around for the best deal, particularly considering they are usually a younger market segment. And of course, the real, real smart ones, we all watch JT :)

I was looking at laptops for college and spent months looking through videos for comparisons and trying to find out which one would be best. I was about to pull the trigger on a maxed out Legion 7 3080ti but then decided to look at more videos on it. Thanks to Jarrod, I picked up the maxed out AMD version instead, as I'm getting 7-8 hours of battery life and around 100 fps at 1440p for most games at high settings. I don't need 4k or super high frame rates, just a battery long enough for school days and enough gpu juice to make games look good and play decently well, not just now but till after school too. Just want to say thanks Jarrod for your comparisons and informational videos, they have been a great help, and thanks to your partner too, what would we do without the graphs :)

@@ro_c_ky_106 It's pretty great in all aspects. 1 month isn't enough time for a full review but best all around laptop purchased in the last 10 years. Quiet, powerful, great keyboard, great display. Battery life is poor while gaming when not in eco mode (Fn+Q to change) Slightly heavy but made very well. Feels durable. 2k and 4k gaming with 50% gpu usage so far. CPU throttles down to 1.8ghz and is still smooth. Rarely goes over 2.9ghz.
Wow, this blows my mind! Indeed I bought 2022 model of Lenovo Legion 5 in 2023. Really I consider the 2023 model a downgrade due to less USB ports and marginal performance upgrade. I do get the weak speaker but it ain't my concern as I have my own desktop speaker more powerful than any laptop speakers.
It makes sense that the majority are buying last year's models in order to save some money, perhaps even buying them during sale events. In March 2022, I bought my Razer Blade Pro 17 (2020 model) for AU$1729 (~US$1100 at the current exchange rate), which was a ~60% discount. It's an incredible laptop with a ridiculous 300Hz screen! Build quality is excellent and the laptop is thin and light for a 17in laptop. Love it. 😄
I've been eyeballing that for a while. Have you pushed it at all for thermals/fan noise? I dont care about these things physically but I do care about damaging something I've spent thousands on. People act like they can't touch the keyboard because it's so hot playing cyberpunk and cant hear themselves think over the fans.
@@YangBalanceYin I am far from having an exhaustive reply to give you on these specific topics. As for now, I can tell you that I always switched the machine in Asus' Turbo mode while testing Cyberpunk in OD mode (all maxed out) and RDR2 (again all maxed out). "Turbo mode" meaning the 3 fans rise up to 6800 RPM, and they are extremely noisy. At least compared to my old Razer 18 Advanced (2 fans, for a maximum of 4900 rpm). This being said, the machine stays fresh as it should. Also, I do gaming with over-hear headphones, so I am not disturbed by the fan noise (cannot say the same about my girlfriend tho). Therefore: I can confirm you the noise but NOT the extreme keyboard heat.
It's interesting to see US market go for the M16. It looks great, but other reviews I saw said the thermals were abysmal under gaming, bordering on unplayable with the laptop keyboard
@@miscwork-qb7pd This happened to me many times with my "old" Razer. It ment that a cleanup of the fans from dust was needed. I also found myself removing the old thermal paste from the CPU to put more performing one and avoid thermal throttling. Again, it's too soon to tell if I'll experience similar issues with the Zephyrus or not, but I do have the impression its cooling system works much better (which ain't even vapor chamber, but has an additional third fan) compared to Razer's one
@@miscwork-qb7pd However, I must specify this might not be the case in the newest Razer 16, which have considerably thicker unibodies compared to five years ago models
Lol because everyone in America is rich? Because everyone in 3rd world countries is poor? Stupid Americans . There are new carss coming out next year - America market gets PLAYED. But Americans think they are getting good deals 😂. They are so full of themselves they are offended by budget and think its a war torn country asking for it.
No. There are a lot of RICH ASF People here who crash the economy every decade or so with overspending and greed as well as buying out politicians to do bad things that lead to bad results
I bought my gaming laptop back in 2021, and back then I bought the Legion 5 from the 2020 model, due to several reasons, but mainly regarding budget. Living in third world country where most of the general users still consider it fine using a 200-300 USD laptops with the most bare specs, the Legion 5 with Ryzen 5 5600H and GTX 1650 Ti at equivalent of ~1000 USD seems like a luxury, even for me, even when the primary reasoning is for working with engineering simulation software I use in my college. However I could provide some of the reasonings behind my choice, and the benefit I only realize later on. First, I bought the laptop just as the Nvidia craze of the 30 series, and they were priced at ~1500 USD minimum in my country, without significant bump in performance, would just better of with perhaps 1200-1300 USD prized ryzen 7 lineup of legion rather than 1500 USD for a measly 3050. Next, is the layout of the laptop gut. The reason I prefer Legion in the end is they're one of the few in the same price range to provide space for internal HDD, while most only provide space for m.2 NVME storage expansion, again budget options. While acer nitro and Asus Tuf provide nearly the same for my needs, at nearly same price point, in the end I choose Legion, and after two year using it, finnally end up with my most hotrod solution: fitting 3 internal storage solution inside the laptop (which officially only allows for 2). Other than the initial 512Gb of M.2 NVME given, I ended up providing another decased SATA ssd, and topped of with another M.2 in the other slot, giving me 3 SSD slot for the internal. And lastly, why I choose lenovo, well, let's just say that, their customer service is the best I've ever feel. My laptop only had two year warranty, and it ended back at June. However, the GPU had problems in March earlier this year which ultimately ended up with the laptop unable to even go into BIOS. I called the service center for Lenovo, and only need to tell about my laptop model and the product number, confirming that my laptop is still under warranty, and start to do the troubleshooting on the phone. After the technicians finnally deemed that it's the motherboard that is the problem, I was told to wait for several days as they ordered a new motherboard to replace the faulty ones in my laptop, completely free of charge, and even have the option to send their own technicians into my own home to replace it directly. Sadly since the technicians needs another week after the part arrive to have an empty time to go to my place, I ended up just going into the service center, and voila it just took 1-2 hour for them to replace it, and I was never happier than that
3050ti is a juggernaut of a laptop GPU and will play any game at 1080p even The Last of Us Remake which recommend 8gigs VRAM but the 5600H & RTX 3050ti played it at 45-60 FPS like a champ without DLSS and high settings. With DLSS even better.
Just bought a Legion Slim 5 14" on sale for black week and I'm really excited to get it! (An RTX 4060, 1tb of ssd, 32GB of ram and Ryzen 7840HS) Partially because of your stellar review on it. Thanks! :)
I opted for a different option. I got the Corsair laptop. It has some windows issues, but its performance is off the charts for the sale price I bought it at.
Thanks bro, and glad to know that some can be shipped here in the Philippines. I can also easily browse some gaming laptops and their prizes by checking the site, tnx a lot... keep up the good work :).
My Lenovo Legion Pro 7i is crushing anything I need it to. It's kind of on the heavier side I suppose, but I'm very happy with it either way. It's a 4080 model with 32GB of ram. Edit: I bought this laptop for mobile video editing with some gaming on the side. I'd have bought a lighter 4060 model for just gaming.
Thanks to your videos, I went with the Asus M16. It's a great laptop for students, and it has one of the lightest power-to-performance ratios in its class.
regarding 2:59 i suspect its mostly people who are at third world countries who are so vocal about covering budget laptops with RTX 3050s or even 1650 and even so they would only comment about it and not actually buying it which is hilarous
I just got a 2022 Asus G14 with 6800hs/RX 6800s. With the right tweaks it's a joy to use, and I don't regret. I wanted an RTX 4060 Asus Zephyrus G16, but could only find FHD options with a measly 350 nits brightness. Next option was the 2023 G14 with a 4050 or 4060 but I couldn't find the white version, only grey. And it cost almost 50% more than the 2022 model which wasn't worth it to me.
That is a very good deal. Don't get me wrong I wish that the 4070 laptop had 12 gigs of VRAM like the desktop version does but since all of the mobile chips are one down from their desktop counterparts it only has eight but still for $1,000 you can't complain That's a great value.

F15 2022 (12700H and 3060) No regrets no need for more. I'm glad to see people buying what they need rather what would stay relative years later. This future proofing isn't worth it, not the extra horsepower.
The G16 would have sold much better had they kept AMD and done the same upgrade they did for the g14. I'd have probably bought one. RTX 40 series was hot garbage this year. The rumored super desktop refresh doesn't give me excitement for laptop next year but maybe strix + 4070 super will be decent.
I purchased an Acer Nitro 5 RTX 3050 4gb 16 GB Ram with a gaming mouse bundle all for 800 CAD. Very happy with this purchase. I can definitely see how Lenovo has the biggest marketshare followed by Asus as they were the other options I wwas looking at. But for the price I got the Nitro, I knew nothing else could beat it.
Just recently bought a gigabyte aorus 17. Its priced cheaper compared to asus and lenovo for similar spec hardware, so i was surprised that gigabytes units sold was that much lower.

Just want to say thanks Jarrod for your comparisons and informational videos, they have been a great help, and thanks to your partner too, what would we do without the graphs :)
if i may ask, which laptop did u buy?

TUF A16 owner here, lovely laptop.
I love the keyboard and the screen.
I have the higher spec model with the 7700S instead of the 7600S
It's honestly a great laptop and I strongly recommend it.
How much was your configuration please?

Your skill to describe charts and graphs are so good tbh.
Your review was what convinced me to buy my Blade 18 a few months ago, with the 4080. Let me just say, it's easily the most powerful and luxurious piece of tech I've ever owned... even if it cost me an arm and a leg, I'd say it was well worth it. Absolutely nothing I've thrown at this laptop causes any kind of issues. Thank you for reviewing it.

I'm curious about what number of units those graphs are about, but this proves like in other areas of life, people ask for budget all the time, but when the time comes, they will buy visibly more expensive or high end.
Love factual sale reviews. This is a real laptop "CONSUMER GUIDE".
Thanks Jarrod.
Guilty, just bought 2021 models this year. In our region, 2022 models are still expensive, even 2nd hand. This video is really good. Metrics!!!

The main reddit for gaming laptops and the discussions people have there are quite consistent with the data shown here. I feel like word of mouth (or rather online opinions) seem to be a huge factor leading to these figures.

Hey Jarrod
Just wanted to express my gratitude! I recently snagged the Lenovo Legion 5i Pro, rocking the specs (4060 and i7-13700H) after tuning into your Lenovo reviews. Budget didn't quite stretch for the 4070 or 4080, but I'm thrilled with my pick, all thanks to your guidance!

I just got my hands on it a couple of days ago, but so far it's been really impressive!
@@ro_c_ky_106
@@ro_c_ky_106 It's pretty great in all aspects. 1 month isn't enough time for a full review but best all around laptop purchased in the last 10 years. Quiet, powerful, great keyboard, great display. Battery life is poor while gaming when not in eco mode (Fn+Q to change) Slightly heavy but made very well. Feels durable. 2k and 4k gaming with 50% gpu usage so far. CPU throttles down to 1.8ghz and is still smooth. Rarely goes over 2.9ghz.
Can't go wrong with Asus or Lenovo
Bought a legion 5 pro 2022 model in January 2023 and haven’t looked back, every game works like a charm and it’s more than enough for me!
I bought a Legion Pro 7i this year and it's an amazing gaming beast best laptop of 2023 quality/price 👌🏻
Love it. 😄
We want a tier list for 2023!
It’s coming just like every year
Ya'know, i knew you were meticulous but this, this is a step above the rest.
Keep it up Jarrod. It'd be nice to see this again next year
Just got a Zephyrus M16 2023 (4080) for 3k, crazy value for the money. Amazing machine.
This research is so useful thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
I would bet most people asking for more budget laptops review are not from the US so the result, which is mostly US based, doesn't reflect that.
I'm actually surprised that RTX 4050 has less than half the sales of RTX 4080. Are laptops that much affordable in USA?

I'm glad to see people buying what they need rather what would stay relative years later. This future proofing isn't worth it, not the extra horsepower.
Because ofc the legion was gonna be popular, build well and have reasonable pricing. You'll get better sales.
