Quick note on the commemoratives. You should not pay attention to the mintages on those, they are extremely misleading because commemoratives are not used in circulation. There are very very few commemoratives that are not extremely easy to find at any show of decent size and all of them are readily available online basically whenever. I have spent the last 20 years being told "look at the mintages for commemorative halves, these are so underpriced", but there prices dont change because they're not actually in low supply. The survival rate on them is like 90% because the vast majority got thrown in the back of your grandmas sock drawer and didnt move for 50 years so they didnt get melted down and destroyed and dwindled over time. That Grant for example, PCGS, NGC, and ANACs all report thousands of them

@@shoeless1137 that’s understandable but you could say the same thing about older proof coins. The survival rates are definitely higher but they are really unique coins that were made for a very short time. I think they are a really cool area to collect that do hold their value fairly well.

@@jadonnoble5621 Yeah they're cool, and definitely have a good group of collectors who like them. Not trying to be a downer or a "wElL aCtuaLLy" kinda guy, I've just seen these pushed a lot on people because of their "low mintages" as a sales tactic by dealers and it feels kinda shady.

I only started collecting post covid, had been shy to get into the expensive numismatics because I know the covid years were rare boom times for all collectables, didn't want to risk what might happen when the economy takes a dump. Common & some better date Morgans in MS65, as one example I know, have dropped ~25% value already. My personal recommendation, collect numismatics you personally enjoy collecting, buy bullion if you want to park your money for the future. It is hard to predict what will hold / grow value over time. NGC's price guide on the draped bust half dollar you show, says it has been flat for the past decade, so at least it hasn't dipped in value against the dollar, but as we all know the dollar has dipped in value a lot in the past decade.

Very educational and a good perspective. I see a theme here, the ". . . undervalued" idea. I certainly agree as a collector/dealer who specializes in semi-key and key dates (also toners, old holders, CAC). But . . . .value is not specifically a matter of mintage or survival . . . it is primarily a function of supply v demand. An extreme example would be token collectors. In some cases, state tokens may have a survival of 3-5, but if there are only 2 collectors of that series/type, the token can be worth $10 instead of $100,000, as in the case of a coin. Simply supply/demand.
As you are surely aware, the mintage of the 1899 Morgie is highly suspect. Survival on those seems to be on the order of others that had mintages in the low 1 mill range. Mintage records are clearly in error (Breen, Swiatek, Miller, etc.). It IS a lower 'availability', but always keep the mintage figures with a big question mark, as other scholars have done in the past.
Commems . . . .again, such cool coins as you stated quite well. But . . . .demand! I put together a Registry that made the top-20 in PCGS on a teacher's budget, but never saw any appreciation beyond the toners or a couple of the rarities (Hawaiian, Spanish Trail, Hudson). Everything else has languished since the 1980s. Your advice is sound. Collect them for the art and history . . .absolutely! That was what I did too . . . but I sold them (to an ex-PCGS grader) for basically a 'push'.
    Enjoyable perspective . . . . . thanks!

@@jeffreyarbogast4735 thank you for the information. I did not know that about the 1899 p Morgan. That’s interesting. I understand what you mean about supply and demand. I feel like the reason seated dollars and draped bust half dollar/dollar aren’t as in demand as Morgan dollars is because of the high barrier to entry in purchasing one. They cost usually at least $500 to buy one when you can get common date Morgan’s for around $25-$30.
