Figured I'd throw this here... my mother is a Christian. I asked her "Did God save Donald Trump from the bullet?" she said "100% yes."..... I asked her "Did God let Corey Comperatore die on purpose?".... she said "No that was not God's doing, that was the shooter".
I love her very much but this type of thinking just doesn't make any sense to me.

It doesn't make sense to anyone who bothers to think it through. Why on earth is God so adamant that a cheating, lying, thieving, vain, cruel, thoughtless, uncurious, prideful, boastful, assaultist, racist, minor attracted rich man, be the leader of his allegedly favorite country?

How was she wrong though? Did the shooter not shoot his gun 3-4 times into a crowd full of people? Wasn’t Trump’s reflex to move his head at the very last moment almost miraculous? I get your point, but it seems like you're blaming God for not making the bullet vanish or intervening in person to stop it. From everything I’ve heard about Corey Comperatore, he was a f* hero and now he's among the angels.

It’s exactly analogous to an abusive husband-An abused wife would praise her abusive husband if he did something she considers good, but would refuse to enumerate any flaw in him when he does something bad. He’s so abusive she has to accept the abuse without question, and make excuses for him (e.g. when they say they don’t understand god’s plans), and be thankful for the occasions he wasn’t abusive (gives him credit and suddenly understands his plans). That’s why the church uses the God as a husband and humanity/the church as a woman/

" This has always been the very purpose of those who are in charge of and spread religion. The very idea of religion is to BELIEVE without question, that IS shutting off your brain. It literally brings you into the mindset of believing what you are told. No wonder religion and autocratic politics either go hand in hand so well as long as they can agree on how to exploit the population (i.e. Western Europe throughout history in particular Medieval Ages, Islamic world), or are bitter enemies with dictatorial regimes fearing the influence of religion (i.e. Soviet Union, China).

      Nehemiah 6:11:
But I said, 'Should such a man as I flee? And who is there, such as I, who would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in!'"

Judging from watching my dad's seminars, any time you attempt to dissect the why, he will retort by saying "don't think too hard about it, just accept it". I was watching a religious lecture of his recently and someone questioned him on certain mechanics of prayer (particularly praying to Mary instead of God directly), and he basically said in his own words "don't think too hard about it, just believe".

That really ticked me off when I heard Trump and other people saying that God had saved him because I won't forget the terrifying scream that came from the wife of the guy who got shot in the head right in front of her and their children, and watching the lifeless body of that poor guy being carried off, not to mention the other two people who were seriously injured. So God saved Trump but made no effort to prevent a wife from losing her husband or children from losing their father that day. That makes me sick.
And what good came from Trump getting shot, everybody including Trump is back at being spiteful and hateful towards each other. I had high hopes that maybe everybody would calm down there malicious rhetoric towards each other in the political arena after seeing what this rhetoric can do, but nooo, it all just continued on so what good came from all of this. Absolutely nothnobody,
If God exists and he wants to make a positive intervention, if this God was any good at all, he would have intervened in the life of the shooter before the shooter would ever consider harming other people the way he did. If this God intervened then, then the shooter would have continued to have lived a better life and he would not have been guilty of being a murderer, he would not have been killed himself, and neither Trump or any of those other people would have been shot. There would have been five people that day that would not have been shot if this kind of intervention would have been done. But then again this is the god of Abraham were talking about, a God that encourages and demands and delights in bloodshed.

You are presupposing SO MUCH. "If god exists...." This is all based on YOUR moral intuitions. That does not make it true.
Other people disagree about what a "Good god" would have done in this situation. How do you declare your moral compass the metric others should defer to? For someone who proports to hate hypocracy (like how people think Trump was saved by god but don't care about the crowd goer), you don't seem to have any reservations about committing the it.

@@21area21 the word "good" is a word made up by man and we have definitions for such words, and that's exactly how I used it in my comment. I'm holding this God character to the same standard as I would any human being. It is said in the scripture is that all things that happen are in accordance to this God's will. So if it was in this God's will that this man had his brains blown out in front of his wife and children, then to hell with that God and I would say the same thing about any human being who would see to it that such a horrible thing would happen as well.
And if anything like this ever happened to our loved ones, there'd be no way in heck that either of us would say that was a good thing so unless you would be guilty of a double standard, you should feel the same way if it happens to complete strangers. And any religious person who would insist that this God is still good despite all the misery in this world, they are just examples of how religion poisons the minds of people, poisons their minds into believing that their God is still good no matter what horrible thing this god does to living creatures on this planet especially the fact that the scriptures say that these things are in his will. There is nothing good about the God of Abraham.

I love how, when being asked if he prefers the Old or New Testament, he’s not sure which noun to use. It’s as though his brain is saying to him: ‘Are they books? Can I say book? What is a Testament? Maybe it’s like a pamphlet. Maybe I shouldn’t say anything in case I look foolish…’ His mouth then stops the sentence short, twice.
And this isn’t the only time he’s done this. His brain can sometimes be very fast to tell his mouth not to finish a sentence, in case he be caught in a lie.

I've had so many instances in my life that I can't explain. At age 16 I was walking alone to church when a man in a truck pulled up and stopped right in front of me and demanded I get into his truck. He was screaming at me and calling me by a name that isn't mine. I was confused and just kept telling him I'm not her. A young man appeared from behind me and said "can I help you"? I told him that I'm not who the guy thinks I am and, while still speaking I turned back to look at the guy by his truck...he was standing there with his mouth open and pale white as if he was scared to death. He jumped into his truck and burned rubber as he sped away.. I turned back around to thank the young man and he was gone but... there was nowhere he could have gone that fast. I stood there in the road absolutely shocked at what had happened and I realized at that moment that the guy was trying to kidnap me. I am not saying it was an angel or God. I haven't a clue where the young man came from. He was tall and white with a half shaved beard and he was wearing a really nice blue suit and red tie. 34 years later I took my son (age 24 at the time) to buy his first suit. He tried one on and yes, it was blue. He walked out with a full blue suit, white shirt and red tie. My jaw dropped and I had flashbacks of that incident. He looked exactly like that young man... same height, same demeanor etc. So.. I still don't know how or what could explain it all. I just know that it's true. So many things have happened throughout my entire life so much they could fill a book. I don't believe in God now but still... I hope to one day to understand why these things have happened to me.

I think most people have stories of things they couldnt explain. I tend to chalk it up to the fact the human brain is known to be unreliable. Hallucanations, deja vu, the measurable unreliability of the human memory etc.
A hallucanation could easily explain the first instance, you turn around and speak to someone who isnt there, a kidnapper, thinking your talking to someone he hasnt seen, panics and flees.

I can easily hypothesise explanations for these events.

Divine intervention, mental shenanigans, or whatever else it may have been, it's all part of the confusing, sometimes terrifying experience of being human, I suppose. Glad you're safe and here today, regardless. Sincerely, a stranger on the internet

If you are a believer, you'd have to question why god would have allowed the shooter near the venue in the first place, why he didn't have the bullet miss Trump altogether, and why he allowed a spectator to be killed.

Alternative theory: God spared Trump so that he could be defeated at the ballot box by a black woman 😂
