Figured I'd throw this here... my mother is a Christian. I asked her "Did God save Donald Trump from the bullet?" she said "100% yes."..... I asked her "Did God let Corey Comperatore die on purpose?".... she said "No that was not God's doing, that was the shooter".
I love her very much but this type of thinking just doesn't make any sense to me.
It doesn't make sense to anyone who bothers to think it through. Why on earth is God so adamant that a cheating, lying, thieving, vain, cruel, thoughtless, uncurious, prideful, boastful, assaultist, racist, minor attracted rich man, be the leader of his allegedly favorite country?
How was she wrong though? Did the shooter not shoot his gun 3-4 times into a crowd full of people? Wasn’t Trump’s reflex to move his head at the very last moment almost miraculous? I get your point, but it seems like you're blaming God for not making the bullet vanish or intervening in person to stop it. From everything I’ve heard about Corey Comperatore, he was a f* hero and now he's among the angels.
It’s called cognitive dissonance
There isn't much thinking occurring there to begin with.
After such questions you have to ask her if god told her when he intervenes and when he doesn't.
We’re all in agreement that trump gives zero fucks about religion right?

When something tragic happens, they will say, "We can't understand God's plans". But they will immediately claim to understand God's plans when something goes right.
When someone is a sole survivor of a plane crash, they think God saved them because he has a plan for them. Yes, God had a plan for them to die but failed.
If there was a God, I think that he could intervene in certain situations, why not? He’s God. And would that mean he doesn’t intervene for certain situations letting people die? Yeah absolutely, if his hand was used for every situation then the “free will” he claims to have given his creations would no longer exist.
@@goodoleboy2525 i think people free will is matched with god plan
It’s exactly analogous to an abusive husband-An abused wife would praise her abusive husband if he did something she considers good, but would refuse to enumerate any flaw in him when he does something bad. He’s so abusive she has to accept the abuse without question, and make excuses for him (e.g. when they say they don’t understand god’s plans), and be thankful for the occasions he wasn’t abusive (gives him credit and suddenly understands his plans). That’s why the church uses the God as a husband and humanity/the church as a woman/
sinful wife analogy.
It ain't about god's mind, it's about their mind
“No one I met at this time - doctors, nurses, practicantes, or fellow-patients - failed to assure me that a man who is hit through the neck and survives it is the luckiest creature alive. I could not help thinking that it would be even luckier not to be hit at all.”

@@RictusHolloweye Great book, more important and interesting than 90% of the things I read in class.
It's funny, but a bit silly. Luck exist in context, and in contrast.
If nobody is being shot, then not being shot wouldn't be considered lucky. It would just be the normal state.
Only when one is being shot, can luck enter the conversation.
That's dumb. It's like:
"I won the lottery! I'm so lucky"
"Wouldn't it have been luckier to be born wealthy"?
Like, it would be more FORTUNATE if you just inherited wealth, but when we speak of luck, we are speaking of chance encounters. And that's not even accounting for the publicity benefits of such an encounter.

When someone is injured, but not killed, it is often said that God was looking out for them. @@oscarballard7911 A big part of the power is that it allows soldiers to sidestep pretty much any internal moral conflict regarding their actions. You are presupposing SO MUCH. "If god exists...." This is all based on YOUR moral intuitions. That does not make it true.
Other people disagree about what a "Good god" would have done in this situation. How do you declare your moral compass the metric others should defer to? For someone who proports to hate hypocracy (like how people think Trump was saved by god but don't care about the crowd goer), you don't seem to have any reservations about committing the it.
😂
@@21area21 the word "good" is a word made up by man and we have definitions for such words, and that's exactly how I used it in my comment. I'm holding this God character to the same standard as I would any human being. It is said in the scripture is that all things that happen are in accordance to this God's will. So if it was in this God's will that this man had his brains blown out in front of his wife and children, then to hell with that God and I would say the same thing about any human being who would see to it that such a horrible thing would happen as well.
And if anything like this ever happened to our loved ones, there'd be no way in heck that either of us would say that was a good thing so unless you would be guilty of a double standard, you should feel the same way if it happens to complete strangers. And any religious person who would insist that this God is still good despite all the misery in this world, they are just examples of how religion poisons the minds of people, poisons their minds into believing that their God is still good no matter what horrible thing this god does to living creatures on this planet especially the fact that the scriptures say that these things are in his will. There is nothing good about the God of Abraham.
He never mentions Christ, either. But spot on. Some prophet predicted the details of Trump's thwarted assassination and said Trump would be reborn and humbled. Trump literally is still arrogant, insulting, and hateful.😂
@@21area21 let me ask you, are you a believer in the Christian god? And if so, do you believe in the existence of other gods that other people believe in? If you say no to the second question, then I can question your disbelief in their gods just as you question my alleged presupposition that your God does not exist.
I love how, when being asked if he prefers the Old or New Testament, he’s not sure which noun to use. It’s as though his brain is saying to him: ‘Are they books? Can I say book? What is a Testament? Maybe it’s like a pamphlet. Maybe I shouldn’t say anything in case I look foolish…’ His mouth then stops the sentence short, twice.
And this isn’t the only time he’s done this. His brain can sometimes be very fast to tell his mouth not to finish a sentence, in case he be caught in a lie.
yeah, or he was thinking, "I have no clue, because I don't read it, what were some of the nice ones I was told in school? Fek it, best get a bit defensive here and ask them to move on to another question".
But it is ironic that he considers religion to be a personal matter. We must remind people of his position on private religion, if he tries to tear down the wall of separation as one of his debts to the religious lobby, that may contribute to him winning the election.
Ah yes, leftists being experts in judging a president's thought and speech patterns...... and then there's Biden who "just has a stutter"
@@sherlockshlome473 There is nothing that either of us wrote that tells you either of us are "leftists". There are plenty of concerned republicans out there too.
@@sherlockshlome473 This has nothing to do with speech patterns. Stop trying to desperately throw a whataboutism into a discussion that doesn’t require one. Trump is an habitual liar. That’s not even up for discussion at this point. He’s been clocked for thousands of lies during his presidency alone. He doesn’t stop.
It’s just interesting trying to watch him navigate those lies when being asked about the Bible, something he clearly knows nothing about.
You know he will be the one to fix the country right?
It doesn't sit right with me EITHER and it wouldn't sit right with anyone that had any common since and a basic ability to discern truth from falsehood.
If god saved Trump he must really hate firefighters too
If Heaven is real, then Cory's death is no longer a bad thing. It'd merely be the method which took him to Heaven. So Alex cannot use death to support his argument. If God is real, then it'd mean that Trump was kept alive for an important purpose. Also, him not dying has had a major impact on things, and it revealed the incompetence of the secret service... And might reveal more in the future.
Or he loves them more than Trump. Remember, in the Christian world view, you go to eternal paradise after you die. This is how WLC was able to justify the slaughter of innocents in the video where he was talking with Alex about divine command. It's hard for atheists like us who spend our time watching people debunk arguments for God to really adopt that mindset, but if one were to truly believe the Bible, Corey Comperatore was the lucky one in this situation.
What’s a WLC compared to a Spinoza, Schopenhauer, or Whitehead?
@@jaketerpening3284I'm sure Catholics all go to hell by their own words.
Lucky that his life was ended by the decree of someone else? Lucky that he knows his wife and child are left alone in this world? It’s very hard to justify how he’s lucky
He saved Trump from that bullet, but won't save Alex's audience from that mustache.
Ah but, like interpretation of passages in scripture, it is entirely depending on the individuals pre-existing personal convictions whether they believe the mustache is an argument for or against God.
This whole "chosen" thing with anyone is so arrogant.
My family and I got into a debate over this a couple weeks back. They were listening to people on TH-cam who claimed it was God’s intervention and agreed. All I could think of is how insulting and upsetting it must be for the family of Corey to hear this. Ridiculous.
I have just realized that Alex’s greatest gift isn’t his cutting reason or his rhetorical persistence, but his ability to convincingly act like he respects the religious views of his Christian interlocutors.
This video is a refreshing peek at his disdain for Christians and their bullshit.
He comes across as someone who respects and considers the views of Christians, but he hates their stupid explanations as much as any of the Big Four.
Wait, who are the Big Four?

Donald Trump is an insurrectionist who tried to coup the US government up to and on January 6th.
I already know all this stuff! Because i read your substack.
Stuff like this makes me even more convinced that there is no god. There are just so many seemingly random situations going on but this one apparantly is "gods work". Why? Why this in particular? Why save Trump but not millions of children out there dying to cancer, hunger, wars you name it. Ridiculous to believe that this one situation would be "unique".
I agree, I came to that conclusion myself.
Hegel said Napoleon was the World Spirit on horseback. There’s your answer. Jung would say he’s the embodiment of the archetype of Wotan.
they sure love to pick and choose
God is in control of all things, he chose to save trump and chooses to let others suffer. In the end, we all deserve to suffer in hell but he chooses to show mercy for some and not others.
“So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires. You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?” On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? Will the thing molded say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this”?”
Romans 9:18-20 LSB
God created us worthy of suffering? He if this is all a part of gods plan he had to know about the first sin but still let it happen. Seems to me than that he wanted someone to punish which is kinda evil
A friend was telling me how they had recently visited ground zero in New York and how amazing it was that a church had unbelievly escaped the destruction of the falling towers at their base and that God must have intervened. How odd God would allow so many people to die but save a church...

I like bearded Alex, I like mustachioed Alex. You look great both ways! Who’s with me?
Come on, guys... leave Alex alone about his mustache. He's been growing that thing all year.
I've had so many instances in my life that I can't explain. At age 16 I was walking alone to church when a man in a truck pulled up and stopped right in front of me and demanded I get into his truck. He was screaming at me and calling me by a name that isn't mine. I was confused and just kept telling him I'm not her. A young man appeared from behind me and said "can I help you"? I told him that I'm not who the guy thinks I am and, while still speaking I turned back to look at the guy by his truck...he was standing there with his mouth open and pale white as if he was scared to death. He jumped into his truck and burned rubber as he sped away.. I turned back around to thank the young man and he was gone but... there was nowhere he could have gone that fast. I stood there in the road absolutely shocked at what had happened and I realized at that moment that the guy was trying to kidnap me. I am not saying it was an angel or God. I haven't a clue where the young man came from. He was tall and white with a half shaved beard and he was wearing a really nice blue suit and red tie. 34 years later I took my son (age 24 at the time) to buy his first suit. He tried one on and yes, it was blue. He walked out with a full blue suit, white shirt and red tie. My jaw dropped and I had flashbacks of that incident. He looked exactly like that young man... same height, same demeanor etc. So.. I still don't know how or what could explain it all. I just know that it's true. So many things have happened throughout my entire life so much they could fill a book. I don't believe in God now but still... I hope to one day to understand why these things have happened to me.
I think most people have stories of things they couldnt explain. I tend to chalk it up to the fact the human brain is known to be unreliable. Hallucanations, deja vu, the measurable unreliability of the human memory etc.
A hallucanation could easily explain the first instance, you turn around and speak to someone who isnt there, a kidnapper, thinking your talking to someone he hasnt seen, panics and flees.
I can easily hypothesise explanations for these events.
Divine intervention, mental shenanigans, or whatever else it may have been, it's all part of the confusing, sometimes terrifying experience of being human, I suppose. Glad you're safe and here today, regardless. Sincerely, a stranger on the internet
