I rode my motorcycle from the east coast to Seattle back in 2010 and followed this road. I got a late start and it was like riding through a blast furnace during the day while a freezer at night but I'm happy to have had the experience. I took a nap on a picnic table at the Montana port of entry/rest area because the hotel front desk in Broadus was closed for the night.
Hey also for anyone reading this, they have a sign that at the beginning of that road that says, "Every white picket on the side of the road represents one person who passed away on this road", and there's literally a picket every 20 feet on both sides of the road until you hit I-90.
Very icy and dangerous in the winter
I live in western South Dakota and have driven this route many, many times. That stretch of 212 has one of the highest traffic accident death rates of any road in the country, due to it being a heavily traveled route (by eastern Montana standards) and a very slow emergency response time. It can take an ambulance over 45 minutes to arrive to an accident. You need to be extremely careful, especially in the winter. Also, if you want to see a remote highway, take Montana highway 200 from Lewistown, MT to Sidney, MT. It’s even more desolate than 212 is, generally 80 miles between towns. You might only pass another vehicle once every 20 minutes. And almost no cell phone reception at all.
The MT-SD border is one of the most remote state borders in the country, probably the most remote. I think there are only dirt roads across it, and they go miles from any paved road. I always wanted to try making the trek to cross that border. It would be a cool place to put a geocache.
Rode it on motorcycle a dozen times, great ride...you must must must stop at crow agency to see the Custer battle site..amazing piece of history.
Another great video. Very beautiful. I like western part of US. I love driving through Montana and Wyoming. If you ever get a chance, take i90 all the way to Seattle. It is breathtaking. The areas you drove through obviously get hammered with hard winters. But for a bugout surviving scenario, I think it's excellent. No people is what you want, and lots of resources. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the suggestion I will be returning in the summer so I will take that road like you suggest. You are blessed to live in the West. It's a natural obstacle too.
If you come out this far, please let me know. I would love to meet you . God bless.
26:00 That area is the Cheyenne reservation. I’m guessing your talk with the gas station lady was in Ashland. You’ll find that border towns have some elements of very racist people. It’s a common occurrence of their treatment of native people. My point is that it goes both ways, sure there are bad people on the Rez just as there are crap people off the reservation.
It was in Broadus not Ashland. Yes I am sure it goes both ways. I am not against natives, but I am against criminals of all kinds native or not.
@@NYPrepper Well it’s hard to take someone’s advice of “this is what I’ve heard” and that person didn’t investigate themselves. I know you’re trying to be helpful but passing dangerous tropes as near truth is not helpful to relationships between natives and non natives. Have a good day, sir.
Eastern Montana native here that lives on highway 212 in fact the reservation is dangerous you don’t want to be there at night or around anyone that’s been drinking. And meth is a problem all over the state not just on the reservations… My best friend got a strung out on it and committed suicide and he was white as your refrigerator. It’s all over the state in every little town city. It’s very sad
I just drove this in my 2003 4Runner OMG it was amazing but definitely stressful kind of you are SO ALONE.
Can you imagine breaking down on this highway... OMG I would freak OUT!!!! lol...
When did you go? Yea it is amazing but scary especially on winter.
Great video, really enjoyed the commentary!
Thanks for watching!! lol
Good share. I haven’t been through that part of Montana yet. But have friends who are from that area. You definitely have to be prepared. We moved from Arkansas to central Nevada. Definitely had to train my family to think more like a prepper!
It's a beautiful state so much land, thanks for watching.
Yes we are very rural I take my boats on the rivers here in Eastern Montana might be the future modes of transportation for you preppers when SHTF… as far as winter you MUST have a winter survival kit. As far as the reservations yeah they are very dangerous stand your ground and don’t give them any money if they approach you don’t be rude but be firm unless the situation calls for a more aggressive manner. And we are wild…
Montana born and raised I wouldn’t give it up for the world
Thanks for sharing the info. Beautiful state, just gotta be cautious. I hope to see the Western part soon.
This area of the country seems like it's better experienced watching in video, rather than going through it in person.. Interesting and dangerous area. Thanks for the video.
In the summer maybe its fine. But not in the winter.
Awesome!!!
I got more footage stay tuned
We are taking this route in a couple months
This video is PERFECT TYSM
Can I ask, was this shot in January? I see it was posted then, but was just wondering
I love Dead Wood. Beautiful area
Lead is cool too
Alot of great info!
Glad you found it useful I hope my tone wasn't too negative
You missed the main attraction on 212 in Montanna...The town of Alzada..read up on it.
I plan on driving through there in September. Thanks for the warning of the Indian reservations.
Winters are brutal too the roads are extremely damgerous in the winter
A non native had car trouble on my Rez and the driver shot two locals and their daughter. The mother and father died, he stole their vehicle and fled but was later caught. There are incidents of missing young women and that has to do with outsiders as well as locals. Outside drug dealers are known to dump bodies in remote areas on the reservations.
Come here with a good heart and you may be met with the same treatment. If you have ill intention, move on and don’t stop here. I’m always prepared for the worst but hoping for the best in terms of self protection and pretty much all natives own guns. They’re used for hunting, survival.
Yup Montana is actually the second least densely populated state in the lower 48 after only Wyoming. Montana actually has the same population density as Mongolia which actually is the least densely populated country IN THE WORLD. Interestingly they both have very similar landscapes and geography as well. The least densely populated part of Montana is actually just to the north of where you went especially around lake fort peck. But Wyoming is even more wild than Montana by a tiny bit. Thanks for making these videos I haven’t seen anyone else making similar videos.
You must mean in the lower 48? Really I didn't know that about Fort Peck. Are you from Montana?
@@NYPrepper yes in the lower 48 not alaska of course. No I’m from Idaho but I know that on the north side of lake fort peck there’s a HUGE unsettled area where there’s actually people who are making what could become the largest nature reserve in the whole country there’s bison out there it’s a massive area and an organization is trying to make to make an “American Serengeti.” It’s so wild that there isn’t even ranch land, homesteaders or reservations out there just pure wilderness. Everywhere from between highway 94 and highway 200 north of Forsyth is complete wilderness as well. Very few ranches and no reservations, very similar to the ancestral steppe prairie.
That's nothing compared to hwy 200,hwy 2 or the hwy 87. Its a great idea not to ever stop for anything in or around the rez.
I worked the oil rigs around Sydney Montana and lived in Fairview Montana and was really nice people and good scenery of the plains andhiked in the bad lands at Roosevelt national park and it was awesome 👍👍👍👍👍
I’m from Rogers city Michigan and now retired from the oil rigs 👍
No we dangerous 😂
Yea very beautiful state and low population
I would compare eastern South Dakota to Nebraska before Iowa. I've driven through all of them multiple times. Iowa, especially on the Western and Northwestern parts, is more of rolling hills of fields interspersed with forest. Nebraska, by contrast is wide open and flat as a pancake, just like Eastern South Dakota.
In fact, you could intersperse scenes from this video of the openness of 212 in WY and SD, with I-80 in NB/Eastern CO, and nobody could tell the difference.
I never been to nebraska, but it makes a lot of sense thanks for sharing that. I miss it out there. Its so different from the forested country here.
Enjoy & please, be careful!!! XOXOXOX 💕💕💕🙏🏼💕💕💕
Thank you!! I am back in NY already just editing and uploading footage from our trip now.
That part of Montana is sparcley populated because it was an Indian reservation. I believe the Northern Cheyenne
Take a shot every time he says western
?
Driving through there 7/25/2021. Hope I make it.
Should be easy in the summer...winter is the worst time to go. Let me know how it goes.
I got caught out there in the dark tonight lol, I was terrified.
it's a creepy area man, I will stick to I-90 from now on. It is super remote and a lot of run down areas. There was a state of emergency there on that reservation due to murders and drugs. Be safe man. I drove through there in Ice fog it was creepy and I spun out on ice doing 55 mph.
@@NYPrepper Yeah I looked this up after I got to the hotel so I could see what the hell I just did. I'll take it as a life lesson though, I'm only doing interstates past 4 pm now.
Safer here then your big cities! I live in between those mile markers! Loving eastern montana!
Flatland with very few trees is NOT very scenic IMHO.
So pretty
I'll just use fw 90 🤣
Personal pertection

STATELINE
troll
@@NYPrepper yeah a troll who has driven 3 million miles around this country and twice across the Real Borders, Canada and Mexico. Tell a story tell it right, not like the weather people started that border thing at state lines. Oh and rode a bicycle 1500 miles 2 years ago across 6 Statelines. Thank you.
