Yes, it stops people erecting monstrosities that dont fit in with the area. After travelling in the US, I see planning is a good idea. Some houses look like they have been designed by the Tele Tubbies. Ive seen roofs of differing pitches on the same building, out of propotion feature the works. You wonder if the designers had sight issues.
How does converting a garage effect the public? It's ok to live under a bridge but not a small cottage. The council should keep their stinking nose out of people's private property and pay more attention to real problems like abused children or the homeless or by making efforts to not waste millions of hard earned tax dollars.
Why people feel the need to snitch about a person living in their garage or building a structure in their own damn yard is beyond me. Do you feel better watching them have to demolish something on their own property? People need to get lives, are you seriously circling the neighborhood looking for wrong doers!?
Did you not understand why what they did was illegal? Did you not understand how their selfishness would affect neighbours rights to have car parking spaces? and how them driving straight into a main highway would pose road safety concerns?
People can be wrong. People write laws. So, no I don't understand, because the aerial view they showed is of a narrow side street with other cars parked right across from their makeshift driveway that would back into the road as well, no way that is a "main highway." I understand it was wrong for them to build fencing to block other parking, fine them, but I don't understand the living in the structure issue. Even if that was a garage they'd pull into the street anyway, that is their freaking driveway and their particular structure still looks just like a garage. I don't see how that hurts anyone but nosy people in their business. Mainly, I don't understand why people buy houses on top of other people if they plan to expand. Get some land out in the outskirts and build without answering to people like this. You have a permit? Cool. If not, that's not my concern as your neighbor on my way to work in the morning if it doesn't affect me living my life.
I love this design, it's brilliant and so quaint. I wish I could see the interior. I believe what people do on their own property is their own business.
Mike The Stand They got the neighbours riled up by causing parking problems etc. I'm sure that's what would have spurred one of them on to complain about the situation.
I also agree. I just wanted to see what the new living quarters looked like, and the operation of the hidden facade. Instead got a tutorial of British regulations. Don't care.
Seriously? With all the crime in the world today, this is actually a concern? Mind your own business and leave them alone. Their space is neat and clean. Who are they hurting?
if it was in the USA her argument of racism would have been accepted. when in need and stuck getting caught for doing something illegal always use the race issue!!
serrot spikester I like the little boy that cried wolf... It is not only not effective any more but coming to a point where it is like the guy that yells fire in a theatre. Just recognized as a poor attempt of justification. The real issue should always have been of whether harm has occurred and whether a legal fiction entity has authority and can be harmed. Home owners associations are horrible but now counties and townships and especially city or village government entities are seeking to act like these home owner ASSociations.
Brad Polmateer anyting we have to pay taxes on we don't own cuz if you stop paying your taxes they're going to take it so was not really ours, other countries you buy the land and you buy or build your home on it and you owe no taxes
So are you saying our paychecks are not ours? Because that is the stupidest "logic" I have ever heard. By that logic, I don't own the food I buy simply because I pay sales tax. Are you really that fucking stupid?! They don't take your property if you fail to pay taxes. They arrest you, but they don't take the property. They sell off just enough of your other stuff in order to recoup the taxes but they are not going to take your property. Also, they only sell off your other stuff after you are dead.
You could not be more wrong, Rachael Nelson. My property taxes do NOT pay the schools anything. That is taken out of INCOME taxes, you cretin. Do you know anything at all about anything? You certainly don't act like it. Also, the court does not take your home. The bank does and only if you have a mortgage. My paycheck does NOT pay other people's bills any more than there's pay mine.
Well at my old house we didn't have enough rooms and my dad decided to make a room in the garage for my uncle. He had cable TV, heat, and radio in there... it was a nice room that I liked... we left the room there when we moved out and thinking about it just reminds me of my uncle who is now in a better place...
Dylan Wheeler - Some of us stupid yanks live in places with proper English names (like Leicester, Worcester, Salisbury, etc.) and know how to pronounce them, mostly. In Massachusetts we pronounce Leominster as lemon-stir rather than lemster. We also managed to put Cambridge next to Boston, where it obviously does not belong.
We have that here in the UK but in practice as long as no neighbour complains then they won't know. I think it is more of a concern if it is a major tree where improper felling off it might cause problems.
Someone actually made this video, unbelievable. It's so boring, it has inspired me, I'm off for a run, this is as low as my day is going to get, bye TH-cam, hello beach
Fun fact, in germany you legally aren't allowed to have a workbench in your garage, if someone really doesn't like you they can call the cops on you to force you to remove the workbench. And people ask me as to how I could possibly hate this country.
Jason Green They get permission though and don't try to do it on the sly, or in this case ( allegedly ) the builder misinformed or mislead them. I'm not sure why someone as intelligent as a doctor would rely on a simple tradesman to verify a buildings legality or consent to build when any half wit knows you need to ask your local town council planning department.
I think you will see that the issue is (as a new build) there will be rules that there must be a number of parking spaces off the road including the garage it is the same across the UK on new builds, maybe this is so when we must have eletric cars by 2040 we can charge them.
The main issue was parking. When this land was developed the City recognized that it created a hazard on the highway, so they put on restrictions to limit highway access. The owners eliminated their parking spaces by converting the garage into something else.
So they removed the garage door when they converted the garage to a "garden annex". Put up a fence around it, then when they took the fence down, wanted to convert what they believed was a legal dwelling back to a garage now that people could see it? And they say they had no idea they were breaking any laws?
As long as there's someone who thinks they're in charge of what you own, you own nothing. It seems to me it's a immense waste of time buying property unless we're going to live forever. There's no way you're going to own it, no man on this planet owns land not one person, not one city, not one country.
Lord Vega I been saying this for years. No one owns anything. The moment you dont pay your taxes, the government takes it away. We are the only species that has to pay to live on this planet.
Finally, someBODY who gets IT! I agree. I thought I was the only one who got IT. You still can't do what you want to on top of spending all that money to own your own land & home and then you DIE. It never made sense to me.
Wow amazing how we still have councils and government that enforce such stupid rules just so everyone else in the community can keep their property values and being nosy neighbors.
Troy Stephens you’re such a loser. Thanks for the embarrassment shivers I ended up getting FOR you after reading your giddy try hard comment”you sick little monkey heehee” I can just picture your train of thought “oh, a female, I might have a chance if I say the right comment. I’ll try teasing a little bit but I’ll say “hee hee” after so she knows I’m just kidding.” Here’s what’s dumb... you interpreted her msg completely wrong, and if you really thought she meant it the way you interpreted it, then you shouldn’t have been all “ohh you’re sick- JUST KIDDING JUST KIDDING!” You should have been like “uhh wtf?” But that’s irrelevant, she meant something else. She was stating that the cops would investigate a secret house/building like that because you never know what kind of sick shit people could be doing in there in secret
No underground bunker. No meth lab. No prepping area. No armory. Nothing interesting at all. This sucked. I actually do believe what they turned the garage into. I'm not shocked at all. I am shocked that you thought I wouldn't believe it. What a waste.
Oh yeah? Suppose you live next door to me and I want to build a rifle range--or an unlicensed nuclear reactor? But that's ok, right? Because it's MY property.
When I see something like this it makes me want to live in the forest or on an island as far as possible away from other humans... so many of them are insane.
OMG Sooooo boring!!! This story could’ve been told in 9 seconds instead of nearly 9 minutes!!!! Such a waste of time! A couple converted their garage into living quarters, then lied about it, then had to change it. Who the F cares!
There hasn't been 'open land' in England since 1650, all land has been divided up & owned by someone, either individuals or local, regional or national government. The English have had to be quite strict on the usage of land otherwise developers would have built on every available plot of land, eliminating all farms, parks, etc. Because everything is so compact it's also recognized that what is done on a plot of land affects the property values on adjacent plots of land. Hence strict controls on uses & types & designs of structures. Americans visiting the U.K. are often startled at what is considered a full size house as the typical British full size house is about 60% of the size of an American house of the same design. I once lived in a 304 sq ft studio in Manhattan which I felt claustrophobic in yet some British friends thought it quite spacious. So a direct comparison between Britain & America in regards to land use & restrictions has to allow for the vast size difference & population density. It always startles me as how efficient the British are in the use of land, managing outside of the major cities to make the land seem far more rural than it really is. All that is due to strict controls, which were arrived at over a century ago out of necessity.
omerta g code "Your not the greatest either" How? He made no spelling errors? He did nothing wrong, Also, I've just watched four videos of this man's, And they all lived up to the title
jack hargreaves why don’t you just read a news article you lazy piece of shit. Do you like it when daddy reads you the newspaper? None of his content is even original...... he literally just reads the trending news and then posts it on his TH-cam channel. I suppose you’re too stupid to ever get off of TH-cam though and actually check the news.
federalexpression because planning permissions adds a lot of value to a house, but you have to pay to have planning permission, therefore if you don’t pay for it you’re house value still increases dramatically and therefore deceiving the new owners of the house
Even in the US, try not paying the government their annual fee for YOUR property and YOUR property won’t be YOURS for long. You never truly own land, there’s always a payment due.
I agree. Stating that the county as Lei Chester instead of Le(silent i)stershire. Wow, no wonder the Americans couldn't spell correctly!!! Only kidding America! :-)
To all the Americans confused as to why planning is taken so seriously, we have a lot less land than you so residents usually live much closer together and so we have to have very strict laws on stuff like this so that other residents aren't inconvenienced. The big issue here is parking as our roads are really narrow compared to yours so in a development like this it would be really important to have a garage so there would be no traffic blockages and on street inconveniences.
that's why I don't understand why people buy property it's a waste of money because eventually the government will take the properties you thought you own anyway
Crazy Charley . Nah m8, if u don’t want to build anything then ur basically fine, it costs hundreds for planning permission that u might now even get and then u have to conform to certain building rules and regulations.
I think this is really cool. Hear in NZ people are living In damp unmodifed garages do to the insaine prices of houses. The fact that these people renovated theirs into a tiny home is really cool and to be honest I wish they did that here
This is so weird because in America you can build an apartment upstairs from your garage they call it the mother in-law suite or the guest house they're just mad because the government didn't get any money from it that's all it is you cannot help anybody without the government getting a portion of the money that's how greedy the government is whether it's in England or United States
kelly Rabe totally different scenario. what happened in the video is equivalent to living in a home owner association neighborhood. Before you buy the house in the UK or USA you HAVE to see what neighborhood rules they have. Go ahead and Google the problems people in the usa have had with HOA's and how some are being fined. HOA's were supposed to help keep blight (rundown homes, overgrown lawns, trash piles, etc) from happening. Homes cost a lot so if your neighbors make their homes trashy it makes your home worth less and you lose your hard earned money. This can really really make people mad to lose money just because their neighbors make the neighborhood look 'ghetto'.
That's where you're wrong, I do have a 2:1 B.a. (hons) in English, studied at University of Sheffield, finished in 2011. Driving home a point with a stranger I've never met? Read your first comment, hypocrite. By the way, I don't need to address you using a high standard of English, this is only social media. Additionally, there's nothing wrong with my grammar. And let's take a close look at your English in your first comment 'iam', I suppose you mean the contraction of 'I' and 'am' which would be 'I'm' and you forgot to capitalise the 'I'. You've got no idea about me, making all these assumptions of who I am based on a few lines of text, that's retarded.
The city is Leicester and pronounced Lester, not Liechester! What’s amazing is these are 2 trusted professionals and they are risking their integrity and possibly bringing their profession into disrepute.
I agree with the doctors, it's there property. Not the neighbors or the building committee. No one would prop up a garage to hide something, it would have had to be installed to hide it.
Dont Blow It Keep It Simple Count Your Money : I think you can buy Wensleydale now in the shops. It's expensive, but then again it would be, since someone has to go dig it up on the moon whilst avoiding skiing dishwashers, then fly it back here , weigh it, pack it etc. It's a bargain really 😁👍
The roads are also very narrow in many cases. If you have two cars parked on either side of a standard urban road no other cars can proceed along the road. Which can cause traffic jams.
Martin S right 👍but the distance between the garage door and their street remains the same. So if they have two cars, one will be parked on that space, and the other car along the street. Making them destroy the property is a bit extreme. Maybe fine them an amount that can also serve as a deterrent. The councils should also include ‘clear terms and conditions for erecting unapproved buildings be it a garage, house, or patio’, since it’s becoming a regular occurrence with property owners. Put it in as part of the agreement, terms and conditions of sale or rental 😏🤷♀️
L Ll: they *do* provide clear terms and conditions for building and adapting property. It's called planning regulations, and every single person who owns or is purchasing a property will know about it. This couple simply chose to ignore them, or foolishly rely on a jobbing builder for legal advice, which bit them in the ass.
If you own your property and there is no homeowner's association in place, you should be able to build what ever you wish on your property. You cannot travel across another persons property or add roads or driveways on land that isnt yours though. I understand that the HOA's are in place to prevent people from dragging the value of property down but I chose to buy a home that we really liked for the reason that I don't want people to tell me how to live. I have never received any complaints on my home either though. Some people just don't have a clue towards how to act.
WIFIGHOST CRUISER Why on earth would you even think so. I live in the U.S. & own my home and land plus some other land in an adjoining state. There is no HOA with my home and any land however the houses near my home are HOA properties. Why could you possibly think I have any type of awakening in my future. I am very aware of the situations involving every aspect of my style of living. I think you are bored and trying to find someone to pick an argument with. That's a little pathetic & could cause you more of a rude awakening than I'll ever need to worry about.
bellesmom2012 I just hate naive people that don't know that this country is dead. Those who are old enough to walk around with their memories of America, the rest walk around with their illusions of it.
WIFIGHOST CRUISER LMAO! That's ok buddy because I enjoy laughing at people that are so deeply entrenched in misery that they have forgotten what they are angry about but fully intend to hang on to the resulting excuses it gives them. Happiness is a choice. You can choose to love your country and try to find joy in each day or you can sit your unemployed ass in your rocker and whine about what you are being deprived of. Life is what you make of it and I have noticed in my time here that the happiest people are those that look around and see what they can do for others instead of sitting on a pile of self pity waiting for happiness to knock on your front door.
I think WIFIGHOST is maybe implying that the EPA can come in and tell you to drain a pond that's been around for generations, or not to plow a field anymore because they think it's wetland now and just want to be paid off by teh land owner? Then with HOA they still can't violate Property Owner rights as protected under the constitution, as no contract can go against that. Even if you agreed to the HOA contract.
Here in the UK? you need planning permission if you wish to extend or add to your property. If you only wish to change the way you 'use' the building your in? you still need to inform the council planners to make sure everything is done to current' building regulations. This couple, attempted to get around both of them issues. These 2 are NOT of low IQ. They are both doctors therefore 1 would consider them to have a 'brain' between their ears. They both 'knew' what they were doing. They both 'knew' it was wrong. If they were un-sure? then all they had to do was visit their local council planners and simply 'ask' for advice. Did they do that? NO! WHY did they not do that? (you decide). But as always, right at the end, when caught with your pants down? they come up with the usual trump card, 'racism'. I got NO simpathy with people like this. There is NO excuse what-so-ever. Trouble is, THIS type of thing is wayyyy too prevelant in the UK, and guess what? it is a very popular issue among people of ethnic minority. Trust me, this I KNOW!
WRONG> In the Uk (and I would have thought ANY sensible country), when you want to purchase a property? you expect that property to have been built correctly, in accordance with recognised building standards and practises. The UK has building regulations to make sure all buildings that are built? meet these said requirments. Before any1 can start to biuld anything? people MUST apply for 'planning permission' if you wish to build OR extend your dwelling. If you merely wish to change the use of certain rooms in your house? you STILL need to meet, 'building regulations'. This completely arrogant couple KNEW what they did was wrong. They went ahead and did what they did AFTER being refused permission form the council. END OF. This pair are NOT people of low IQ. They are both doctors. Therefore there is NO excuse they can come up with. It is their utter arrogance and stoubourness that they went ahead in spite of the fact that they KNEW they were wrong AND they knew what the consequences might be if/when they were found out. In my view? if they refuse to comply with the councils directions? then the council should take control and do the nesseccary work and then send them the bill. Job Done!
Dwight Turner he also plagiarizes scribol this one is read word for word from the article that somebody else were wrote. He's such a talentless was piece of s***.
If this is a home owners association, then they agreed to the terms when they bought the house. If this is the government saying no, then it's an oppressive government overreaching and sticking their nose where it doesn't belong.
Paul Williams nope you don’t. i know i do because where i’m from your property is yours. the only thing i paid for is the loan i took to build my home. i don’t pay any taxes to the government for anything i own. we don’t pay permits to build except for inspections because the government doesn’t want your house to fall on you or catch on fire because contractors took shortcuts when building it. also ensuring that your home/property won’t be a hazard to the environment and others.
It use to be LAW that every home had a bunker for bombings during the war and when a siren went off, lights out, everyone to the bunker. Did the parliament do away with that law⁉️
Looks like they have more than enough parking X2 drive ways on the same road as everyone else. Sounds like they live in a suburb full of cranky bored old people
Hundreds of years ago, this is the same reason people left England to come to the colonies in what is now the United States. All of the land was owned by feudal Lords and the Empire. Although restrictions still exist here in the US, in "most" cases they are reasonable. In many areas, as long as you don't damage the value of your neighbor's property, you can live as you like.
Alan George Barstow Are you a native Brit? Do Brits use Worcestershire sauce? Is it pronounced Wooster-shy-er or Wooster-sheer or maybe Wooster-sher? (My mom always said -sheer. My dad always pretended he couldn't say it. He thought he was being funny, and maybe it was when I was 6.)
david david, I am English (I'm not fond of the word 'Brit') and we do indeed use Worcestershire sauce. I expect that is because it was invented here and has always been a popular ingredient in our cooking. The 'shire' part of any English county is generally 'swallowed' and hardly emphasised when pronounced. Most people say a vague 'sher' (the final 'r' being almost non-existent) when pronouncing 'shire'. Thus, Worcestershire is pronounced 'wooster-sher' (or 'wuster-shuh'). Incidentally, in practice, most British people refer to the sauce as 'Worcester sauce' (dropping the 'shire' bit completely) and this is pronounced 'wooster sauce' (or 'wuster sauce'). By the way, Lea & Perrins (of Worcester) invented the sauce and that is the only version to buy. I hope this helps.
Alan George Barstow I am very sorry and embarrassed that I offended you. Please accept my apology. Thank you very much for talking about what might be the most enigmatic food word in the US. I am relieved to know I was raised pronouncing it mostly correctly. And I would share that I was raised on Lea & Perrins. I recall as a child the bottle was sold wrapped in brown paper with, I think, a red band around the neck of the bottle. Never really used it with anything other than beef and steak, but I think we can purchase another sauce today made for chicken and poultry, but neither has the brown paper wrapping. If you ever have any questions about how we say any US place names, how we might pronounce a particular word, or what we call something, give me a shout. Imagine my surprise when, being given directions to find our rented cottage in the Highlands, I was told to drive over the sleeping policeman (We call them speed bumps.) I was confused when purchasing a bottle of water to drink and was asked in return, "Still?" There was an awkward pause, and I was about to reply, "Of course I still want it. I just asked for it." Before I embarrassed myself, the question was repeated, "Would you like a bottle of sparkling water or a bottle of still water?" and I understood what she meant. Over here we refer to all bottled water as, simply, water, or by its brand name (Evian, Perrier, etc.) unless there is something different or special about it - sparkling, flavored, tonic, seltzer, or what-have-you. I very much appreciate the kindness shown when a shopkeeper explained what a toilet roll is (here a roll of toilet paper, toilet tissue, bathroom tissue, or by the brand name (Charmin, for instance). Well, cheers then. Thanks, again.
david david, Please don't feel embarrassed or be sorry; you did not offend me in the slightest. I was only too happy to explain the differences in pronunciation between our respective countries. Yes, we do have some quaint customs and they must be most bewildering to foreigners (I too get confused when visiting different parts of the British Isles). I am quite au fait with a lot of American parlance since, here in Europe, we watch a lot of American films (movies) and enjoy concerts from many American musicians (I am a huge fan of the Blues). I have only visited the United States on two occasions and I enjoyed my visits on both occasions immensely. The first time was 1980 when I visited Los Angeles. It was just after the Mount St Helens eruption in Washington State and the effect this had on the west coast weather systems was incredible. It actually blew all the foul air (motor fumes) away from the city and the locals told me they could see their city (and breathe clean air) for the first time in decades! Before my visit, I bought a small booklet, which explained the differences between the way both countries talk. In the book I was surprised to find that Americans call prawns "shrimps" and shrimps "prawns". The foreword was written by a British politician who, on his first visit Stateside, was invited to a White House banquet. He toured the tailor shops of Washington DC asking for "braces for his trousers" and all he got was confused looks It was only when a local informed him that he ought to ask for "suspenders for his pants" that he managed to buy the merchandise he sought. [in the UK, "suspenders" (garter belts) are worn by ladies to hold up their "nylon stockings" (hose)]. My second visit to the States took in New York State, New Jersey ("Noo Joisey"), Pennsylvania, and bits of Vermont, Massachusetts and Connecticut before returning and having a few days exploring NYC. I loved both visits and met some wonderful people. I must return at some stage before I get too old. Thanks again for your kind reply.
Many people in the UK convert their garages into other uses, without planning or building regs. Sometimes building regs are needed, rarely planning, but the problem here is that a stipulation was made to reduce congestion in parking, which is a big problem in the uk.
Oh nooo! I made a change to the private property that I own! This is why you do not want to have a homeowners association or a council (I'm assuming a local council in the UK is the equivalent of a homeowners association in the US).
Well...its nice to know that the US isn't the only one with repressive zoning laws...I guess? Seriously, zoning has gone from being about public safety to little petty local bureaucrats lording it over "the peasantry". Not their land, not their business unless it deals with public safety. The access road might fall into that, the tiny house was none of their damned business.
YOU go to work to earn enough money to get a deposit. YOU borrow enough money to buy a property. YOU make the repayments on that property. THE COUNCIL can tell you what you can and can't do on YOUR property. Is it just me, or does anyone else think this really sux.
It didn't create a hazard to the public. IT's their property not the councils, the council isn't paying for that land, and as such has no say over whats done with it.
This type of needless over regulation of people and property (for no good valid reason) should be abolished. If it's not interfering or harming anyone else then it should be ok.
Torie Paige nope it was not rented. They still were allowing a family Meme to stay on their land temporarily. I don’t understand it when it’s their land and they were not doing anything illegal.
If its their land why cant they convert their garage into a small cottage and rent it out?? We have a small one bedroom cottage built next to our house in our garden here in South Africa, no problems with planning permission as long as three neighbours approve. We are a quiet family and dont party so we expect our renters to be quiet people too. As I am housebound due to being ill and only one income coming in for years with 2 boys the extra finances from our kind renters is a god send... its our property so we should be able to build if it does not interfere with our neighbours. Some of our neighbours do NOT give us the same consideration when they have their very loud drunken parties that go on til 2 or 3am.
Look at it this way, a small village containing single storey houses only, now along comes a person and buys a small piece of land in the village and then decides they want to build a block of flats/apartments 10 levels high?, doesn't work or fit in with the other housing do's it?
If it's YOUR property, your land title, your house..... paid for by YOUR money.... Yes, you should be able to build an apartment if you can fit one safely on YOUR land. What gives someone the right, to dictate what you can or can't do with your money? Especially when that decision does not affect anyone? Nothing gives anyone the right. These councils serve very little practical purpose other than to satisfy the power trip of old bastards, who were too stupid to get into any real office or public service, so instead they try to lord over little towns to satisfy their power trip and collecting money from the locals for their own benefits.

enigma just because it's your house doesn't mean you can build multiple homes on your lot on a residential street. you also need permits and a licensed contractor not billy bob the handyman, i wouldn't want to see a ugly ass house right next to mine and an extra 4 people and 2 extra cars cuz john smith built a little shack to rent in the backyard. if this was out in the country go and build as much jerry rigged shit you want.
LOL I rented from a dude like this in Los Angeles years ago. He turned the 2nd story of his house into a 2 bedroom apt, where I lived, which was probably legal. But then he converted his garage (totally illegal) and rented it to a young family, and finally his TOOL SHED hahaha. He put a toilet and shower stall in it, and rented it out too. He had a nice little hood empire going there until the city found out and shut him down. Luckily the upstairs 2-bedroom where I lived remained
In my home town USA 70 years ago an man bought a small lot in what is now the middle of town and built for his bride a house made of stone he got free from farmers found plowing their fields it took him 10 years but he finished his home and it is very nice looking and strong it still stands in town today.
Yup, this is the UK. The council don't mind property developers building ugly, ridiculously small houses with tiny bedrooms which look more like walk in closets. If you build a house, the style has to match the rest of the houses in the road whether you like them or not. If you buy a very old building which is listed, it can be absolutely dilapidated and an eyesore, yet you can't demolish it? I agree with planning permission but really so tired of seeing the same old style buildings everywhere.
Imagine buying a house and putting yourself in debt but not being allowed to do what you want with it. What a time to be alive
Yes, it stops people erecting monstrosities that dont fit in with the area. After travelling in the US, I see planning is a good idea. Some houses look like they have been designed by the Tele Tubbies. Ive seen roofs of differing pitches on the same building, out of propotion feature the works. How does converting a garage effect the public? It's ok to live under a bridge but not a small cottage. The council should keep their stinking nose out of people's private property and pay more attention to real problems like abused children or the homeless or by making efforts to not waste millions of hard earned tax dollars.
Exactly!!!
@Creeper Gazer Minecraft CGM Seems like an issue between them and their landlord if they are ranting. If not it's certainly nobody else's business.
Why people feel the need to snitch about a person living in their garage or building a structure in their own damn yard is beyond me. Do you feel better watching them have to demolish something on their own property? People need to get lives, are you seriously circling the neighborhood looking for wrong doers!?
IKR!
Exactly! I would NEVER buy a home with a "Homeowner's Association" included, or excessive rules and laws controlling my use of it.
Did you not understand why what they did was illegal? Did you not understand how their selfishness would affect neighbours rights to have car parking spaces? and how them driving straight into a main highway would pose road safety concerns?

Get some land out in the outskirts and build without answering to people like this. You have a permit? Cool. If not, that's not my concern as your neighbor on my way to work in the morning if it doesn't affect me living my life.
Terry Shaw sounds like my bitch neighbor
I love this design, it's brilliant and so quaint. I wish I could see the interior. I believe what people do on their own property is their own business.
I had neighbors who renovated their garage into a rec room but kept the outside looking the same so they didn't have to get permits.
If they did not hurt anyone the bloody nosey council should leave people alone.
Mike The Stand
They got the neighbours riled up by causing parking problems etc.
I'm sure that's what would have spurred one of them on to complain about the situation.
Stealing is okay apparently.
I guess what it boils down to is, you don't own anything. You lease it from the Government.
bill head yes and pay them for the rest of your. Life to breath air
bill head Right!
Almost makes you want to start your own country.
bill head Isn’t that just the sad truth of it!
agun17 yes I know we pay just because we are alive and want to be like everyone else and the need to breave.
You drag the story to long!!!!
CALIMAN every video goes like that for them..sheesh, used to be a fan..now I just don't have time..lol
I also agree. I just wanted to see what the new living quarters looked like, and the operation of the hidden facade. Instead got a tutorial of British regulations. Don't care.
I stopped watching... they kept showing the same 'outside' pictures & the couples cruise ship photo... no thx, waste of time lol!
Exactly
True. Taking too long to get to the point
Most of them are fought because of nosey jealous neighbours ....you could build something in a jungle someone will snitch.
*Thank goodness I watched this! This vid helped me fall asleep!*
SIR MEOWS A LOTTM 😹
Me too!
4 mins in. Why am I still watching this
Ryen Brousseau With all the buildup, I thought it was a meth lab behind that door
Not me. Double speed on silence (w/captions) until I got the gist of it, then I killed it. BOORRRRINGGG!
3 mins
I was just asking myself the same question! 😂
Ryen Brousseau my thought exactly...I'm out.
OMG WHO CARESSSSSS!!!!! Geez, they should be able to build a small house on their own property if they want... 😕😐
Hi 🙂
Yeah but they shouldn’t have cause it was not aloud
Seriously? With all the crime in the world today, this is actually a concern? Mind your own business and leave them alone. Their space is neat and clean. Who are they hurting?
Clearly a few idiots don't understand how the LAW works or why it's there
HENRY THE RC CAR they didn't say MOTHER MAY I!
Its refreshing to learn that the U.S. government isn’t the feature in this story. 🙄
Valerie Foster, same here
if it was in the USA her argument of racism would have been accepted. when in need and stuck getting caught for doing something illegal always use the race issue!!
Valerie Foster Yes but unfortunately this is common here also.
that races card seem to work all time
serrot spikester I like the little boy that cried wolf...
Just goes to show you that you realy don't own your property
Brad Polmateer 5
W
NB: Leicester is pronounced 'Less-ter' rather than 'Lie-chester'!
I cringed at Lie chester
Dylan Wheeler - Some of us stupid yanks live in places with proper English names (like Leicester, Worcester, Salisbury, etc.) and know how to pronounce them, mostly. In Massachusetts we pronounce Leominster as lemon-stir rather than lemster. We also managed to put Cambridge next to Boston, where it obviously does not belong.
I was wondering where the hell that place was!
I'm in the U.S. and you can't even cut down a tree without obtaining a permit from the County.
We have TPO`s here too.
I PLANTED a tree and got told off for it once. They even cut it down. All three feet of it. 😒
Don`t give up,the world needs more trees :)
We have that here in the UK but in practice as long as no neighbour complains then they won't know. I think it is more of a concern if it is a major tree where improper felling off it might cause problems.
TehJenn plant it again and tell them to fuck off
Someone actually made this video, unbelievable. It's so boring, it has inspired me, I'm off for a run, this is as low as my day is going to get, bye TH-cam, hello beach
The DogVlog lol take your dog there too
The DogVlog LOL take your cute dog there too
How about it, this is absolutely ridiculous. A frigging house, that is it. So what?
The DogVlog watch out for that storm coming
It could’ve been like a one minute video and be way better lol
Fun fact, in germany you legally aren't allowed to have a workbench in your garage, if someone really doesn't like you they can call the cops on you to force you to remove the workbench.
And people ask me as to how I could possibly hate this country.
I hate the whole idea of not being able to do what you want within your own property.
Hang on a minute. Loads of people convert/ use sheds and garages as offices. They should have said that.
Jason Green
They get permission though and don't try to do it on the sly, or in this case ( allegedly ) the builder misinformed or mislead them.
I'm not sure why someone as intelligent as a doctor would rely on a simple tradesman to verify a buildings legality or consent to build when any half wit knows you need to ask your local town council planning department.
An office is different from actual living quarters that one is charging rent for.
Seems like the Brits are a bunch of nosy haters
cesar vega all of southern England is. I live in the North and we are all fine up here
So they removed the garage door when they converted the garage to a "garden annex".
Put up a fence around it, then when they took the fence down, wanted to convert what they believed was a legal dwelling back to a garage now that people could see it?
And they say they had no idea they were breaking any laws?
Who cares saddo
As long as there's someone who thinks they're in charge of what you own, you own nothing. It seems to me it's a immense waste of time buying property unless we're going to live forever. There's no way you're going to own it, no man on this planet owns land not one person, not one city, not one country.
Lord Vega
I been saying this for years.
Minimalism is defo the way forward. Spend your money on experiences.
Wow amazing how we still have councils and government that enforce such stupid rules just so everyone else in the community can keep their property values and being nosy neighbors.
Is it a meth lab?
Edit: It wasn't a meth lab, it was just a gay little house.
+CoolGuy 77 Ah, sorry. My bad.
exactly what I expected tbh. You could even see it in the thumbnail
Or somewhere to hide a potential victim for "personal use"!
CoolGuy 77
Gay also means happy so..
H. I. McDunnough
Same!
Agreed...I was thinking meth lab or human smuggling stash house
I agree I thought it was something illegal
Stupid should be able to build whatever you want on your own property
watch out for snitching neighbors
Oh yeah? Suppose you live next door to me and I want to build a rifle range--or an unlicensed nuclear reactor? But that's ok, right? Because it's MY property.
Haha, this is England, they don't own anything, their "King" owns everything.
Cryptonymicus - Sure build a rifle range that’s not a big deal. It would be shooting the firearm that would be the issue.
Cryptonymicus but why the fuck would you build that? Thats just a fucken autistic response, what he/she meant was a little house or something small
When I see something like this it makes me want to live in the forest or on an island as far as possible away from other humans... so many of them are insane.
110% behind you there.
OMG Sooooo boring!!! This story could’ve been told in 9 seconds instead of nearly 9 minutes!!!! Such a waste of time! A couple converted their garage into living quarters, then lied about it, then had to change it. Who the F cares!
I've just wasted 8.42 minutes of my life watching this video 😋

They need to reform it given the housing shortage.

Just reminds me why I like being a citizen, and not a subject.
Your hole channel is click bait.every video is covering something way more boring then the tittle.

Do you like it when daddy reads you the newspaper?
None of his content is even original...... he literally just reads the trending news and then posts it on his TH-cam channel.
I suppose you’re too stupid to ever get off of TH-cam though and actually check the news.
This video never shows the inside of the garage.
super.go it’s just room
I know I was hoping they would
Thanks. Thats all I wanted to see.
Noooooo
super.go thanK you
In other words, in the UK you have no property rights.
federalexpression because planning permissions adds a lot of value to a house, but you have to pay to have planning permission, therefore if you don’t pay for it you’re house value still increases dramatically and therefore deceiving the new owners of the house
Even in the US, try not paying the government their annual fee for YOUR property and YOUR property won’t be YOURS for long. You never truly own land, there’s always a payment due.
The pronunciation of Leicester is so cringe worthy
Innit its more pronounced as Lester ffs
Wait they were saying Leicester. It's sounded like Lichester. 😂😂
I feel like cutting my own ears off after hearing that.
I agree. Stating that the county as Lei Chester instead of Le(silent i)stershire. Wow, no wonder the Americans couldn't spell correctly!!! Only kidding America! :-)
George Patton ikr
I think it's perfectly fine to convert your garage into a legal dwelling, as long as members of your immediate family in there.....
Same thing happens in Australia. Can't do anything on YOUR land without council approval. You never really own your land. Rates is just like rent.
mehau2rox
Queeny owns it, you just rent it off the German 😁
mehau2rox
mehau2rox Nah mate, if the government tries to take your land here, you fucking beat their ass
that's why I don't understand why people buy property it's a waste of money because eventually the government will take the properties you thought you own anyway
Jeez the UK seems like a bureaucratic nightmare.
Chris D I’m from the uk and it’s not a nightmare
Chris D I'll take that as a bad compliment to uk 🇬🇧 beacause I live there 🇬🇧
Chris D . It’s a nightmare plz send help. 😂😂
Crazy Charley . Nah m8, if u don’t want to build anything then ur basically fine, it costs hundreds for planning permission that u might now even get and then u have to conform to certain building rules and regulations.
Chris D egg farts
Living in a community is a pain in the ass all the rules and regulations that's why country for me
I think this is really cool. Hear in NZ people are living In damp unmodifed garages do to the insaine prices of houses. The fact that these people renovated theirs into a tiny home is really cool and to be honest I wish they did that here
Lie-Chester😆😆😆😂😂😂 Leicester is pronounced “Lester” like “uncle fester” 🇬🇧
Lizzie Dean Makes not according to the spelling.
NDK0 yes from the spelling according to the language of Britain otherwise known as English 😂
THANK YOU!!! WTF IS WRONG WITH AMERICANS!?!
The pronunciation of the place names are so funny
What about Worcester..That always gets a laugh when Americans try to pronounce it..............Are you watching America.....WUSTER!!!!
This is so weird because in America you can build an apartment upstairs from your garage they call it the mother in-law suite or the guest house they're just mad because the government didn't get any money from it that's all it is you cannot help anybody without the government getting a portion of the money that's how greedy the government is whether it's in England or United States
kelly Rabe
totally different scenario. what happened in the video is equivalent to living in a home owner association neighborhood.
Leicester is pronounced LESSTER, ffs.
Being that I have a B.a. (hons) in English, probably. Anyway, go fuck yourself, troll.
TrigJosh lol big cringe.
Made me cringe hearing it being pronounced like that
And look at you now, in Sheffield, writing comments on youtube.
kinda click baitey,let us seeee
The city is Leicester and pronounced Lester, not Liechester! What’s amazing is these are 2 trusted professionals and they are risking their integrity and possibly bringing their profession into disrepute.
I agree with the doctors, it's there property. Not the neighbors or the building committee. No one would prop up a garage to hide something, it would have had to be installed to hide it.
Every time I hear this dudes voice Ik the video is just 10 mins of him re wording 30 seconds of information
Im dissapointed it wasnt a rocket they built to fly to the moon to get cheese.
Dont Blow It Keep It Simple Count Your Money :
I think you can buy Wensleydale now in the shops.
It's expensive, but then again it would be, since someone has to go dig it up on the moon whilst avoiding skiing dishwashers, then fly it back here , weigh it, pack it etc.
It's a bargain really 😁👍
If the space can be used as a garage, why not a small cottage? It’s not going to alter the size of anything, be it a garage or a house 😏🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Because the car that should be in the garage ends up on the street and causes traffic congestion.
Martin S: with the very small cars in Britain, one car more or less screws up the entire city?
Shows you don't own your property, your nosy ass neighbors do.
2 types those who want to be left alone.....and those who won't leave them alone!
Some people just don't have a clue towards how to act.
bellesmom2012 if that's what you thought then you sure have a rude awakening coming!
WIFIGHOST CRUISER
Why on earth would you even think so.
WIFIGHOST CRUISER
LMAO!
1wannabee1 they aren't a minority there white
Check their names? (they are NOT 'British' names)
Job Done!
This channel is a joke. I can't stand the speaker's voice. This video is much ado about nothing.
Dwight Turner he also plagiarizes scribol this one is read word for word from the article that somebody else were wrote.
He's such a talentless was piece of s***.
It's a shame that you can't do what you want on your own property without people complaining.
the government , any government has absolutely no right to tell home owners what they can and cannot do on their own property
If this is a home owners association, then they agreed to the terms when they bought the house. If this is the government saying no, then it's an oppressive government overreaching and sticking their nose where it doesn't belong.
So do you REALLY own your home?
Paul Williams nope you don’t. i know i do because where i’m from your property is yours. the only thing i paid for is the loan i took to build my home. i don’t pay any taxes to the government for anything i own. we don’t pay permits to build except for inspections because the government doesn’t want your house to fall on you or catch on fire because contractors took shortcuts when building it. also ensuring that your home/property won’t be a hazard to the environment and others.
A friend once told me her parents had paid their house off, and all they got was a copy of the deed, not the actual deed. Strange huh? that's Oregon.
No
Nope. This system is screwed
we live in a prison and it sucks to not have freedom
Holy fuk! This video only needed to be a minute long!
So, housing cars is more important than housing people? That is the exact message given by these laws. Absolutely foolish.
It use to be LAW that every home had a bunker for bombings during the war and when a siren went off, lights out, everyone to the bunker. Did the parliament do away with that law⁉️
Big-Mouthed neighbors should have minded their own business.
I was hoping they were doing something illegal like selling drugs, weed, or at least smuggling something of interest.
I think a lot of people are jealous.lots of tell tales out there.
Looks like they have more than enough parking X2 drive ways on the same road as everyone else. Sounds like they live in a suburb full of cranky bored old people
As an Englishman I have to comment! Leiscester is pronounced ‘Lester’ and isn’t a county but a city. Leicestershire is the county.
It's not the county of "Lye-chester" or even "Lye-sester". Leicester is pronounced "Lester". [Gloucester is "Gloster" and Worcester is "Wuster"].

This is why I will never live in a 'deed restricted' community. This same crap with owners of private property happens in the US all the time.
Click bate and besides...who cares?
Oh nooo! I made a change to the private property that I own!
This is why you do not want to have a homeowners association or a council (I'm assuming a local council in the UK is the equivalent of a homeowners association in the US).
CheesyBread the council is the local government.
It's like the County
Well...its nice to know that the US isn't the only one with repressive zoning laws...I guess?
Seriously, zoning has gone from being about public safety to little petty local bureaucrats lording it over "the peasantry".
Not their land, not their business unless it deals with public safety. The access road might fall into that, the tiny house was none of their damned business.
Wasteland Seven preach!👏
That rule is in place to stop over parking on streets which is a massive problem there. The rule is meant to help not control.
YOU go to work to earn enough money to get a deposit. YOU borrow enough money to buy a property. YOU make the repayments on that property. THE COUNCIL can tell you what you can and can't do on YOUR property. Is it just me, or does anyone else think this really sux.
I like turtles
Tina Windham I like meth
I like turtles aswell, but I love tortoises the most!
How dare they like 🐢 more
Thank you for wasting 5 minutes of my life

9 minutes.
But keep exchanging the comments, please, they make up for the wasted visit :)
I do find that Council distasteful what we choose for our house should be our Business.
even when your actions create a hazard to the public? even when the restrictions were made clear when you purchased the property?
Israr Hussain want to start a profitable and dangerous meth lab? Hahahaha. Maybe cook down some rock cocaine. Or maybe a suicide vest factory. Hahaha
It didn't create a hazard to the public. IT's their property not the councils, the council isn't paying for that land, and as such has no say over whats done with it.
This type of needless over regulation of people and property (for no good valid reason) should be abolished. If it's not interfering or harming anyone else then it should be ok.
Governments say you own but the truth is your only renting government property.
But he rented it out, which is fraud.
Technically if they cant see you build it. You are legally allowed to build it.
Look at it this way, a small village containing single storey houses only, now along comes a person and buys a small piece of land in the village and then decides they want to build a block of flats/apartments 10 levels high?, doesn't work or fit in with the other housing do's it?
DO'S IT?!
So, this is a video about somebody that converted their garage into a living-quarter? It looks like the internet has ran out of stories.
That is so messed up!

"we have a housing problem".... make affordable living quarters..... "you cant do that, dismantle it immediatly".
Government policies 101.

Authorities didn't discover anything, some neighbors squealed on them.
