Flew from Montana to Alaska for a hunting trip. My 30-06 was in a 2 piece slip together plastic case with a hole in each side for a lock. They asked for my key and checked everything. Picking it up in Anchorage, they put the lock through 1 hole but not the other in the 2nd half of the case. My gun and ammo was falling out all over when I picked it up, the 2nd half of the case was missing. Had to buy new case to fly back with.

I be been flying with guns and ammo since 1983 , a few things that I do
    1) arrival time
I arrive 2hrs before boarding time
    2) most of my firearms have locks with keys
    3) my gun cases I usually have locks with keys and combination locks
However I m leaning more towards the combination locks
    4) I take pictures of all my ammo and
all of my firearms with locks
    All of my magazines
    5) All pictures are taken on the scale
I wait for the tsa inspection to be completed before I leave
    6) I pat myself down like 3 or 4 times for knives, mags, guns, loose bullets
I be never had a problem
    7) ammo is in a secure blue container or in a factory ammo box , usually with tape wrapped around it once or twice
Ammo is in a separate case or my suitcase, separated from the firearms of course,
8 ) long gun cases are usually
    A high end pelican cases
Or the vault made by pelican, however they are lighter and less expensive, not as tough as their high end pelicans

FYI for anybody watching, I used to work at O'Hare Airport. At American the ammo cannot be loaded in the magazines. Also, the ammo MUST be in an ammo box. The best would be to have it in a factory ammunition box. U item is the same way. Furthermore, United and American will call the police for them to verify that the weapon is unloaded.

I'm flying with American at end of month, plan on declaring my CCW, plan on using a 3 coded hard side gun case, would you suggest I get another case that has key locks instead? Or will I be present when LEO needs to get in case to inspect

@@Mountainghost72 I don't know what the procedure is where you are departing from but at O'Hare in Chicago, the police will be called to the ticket counter to make sure the weapon is not loaded. You will be present when the officer makes the inspection. However, one thing is certain make sure the bullets are in a factory ammo box and that the magazines are unloaded.

Flew from MSP to CO Springs last Fall for a Elk hunt- had a layover in Denver. We checked both our guns and one bag that had most of our outer layers. Airline lost them all. The amount of hours I spent on the phone w/ folks in India trying to explain that we needed these bags ASAP was simply amazing. They were eventually found and delievered to the closest gas station to us but it was two days later. After all that good old United gave us each a whopping $100 voucher for our trouble since we couldnt product any actual dollar amount spent due to the delay since we were camping- tried to explain time and time again that what we lost was much greater then $$$, we lost TIME- and since it was a five day season was a pretty big deal. Never fly with guns if you have any connection would be my advice.

yeah only way id fly with my guns if its a straight flight. usually the bags are only gonna get lost when they go from one plane to another instead of just from on the plane to straight back to you when you land

    In Canada
Air Canada requires you to arrive to check your firearms in one hour prior to Is boarding
If your connecting flight was within an hour they will make you wait and take the next flight
Luckily we did not have that issue buthat issue but we met other hunters who missed their flights because their connecting flight was within one hour and they would not allow them to go on
Be sure to check your regulations
And ammunition must be In luggage separate from the firearm
