We did almost all of those, plus the Natchez Under The Hill. Under-the-Hill Saloon, Mark Twain guesthouse. Dinner at Magnolias and a very nice sunset over the river/bridge.
At the very beginning of the 18th century, the French made a treaty with the Indians of the Natchez tribe and created a trading post on the Mississippi with a small wooden fort. However, after a period of good relations, a Natchez party massacred almost the entire colony in rather sordid conditions. A few months later, the French coming from New Orleans repressed in blood the revolt and built a stronger fort. The Natchez colony did not generate much agricultural surplus as a result of which the Compagnie des Indes stopped funding this project and Natchez remained a small trading post on the Mississippi.
It's definitely a very different culture than anywhere else in MS. It's something like 25% LGBT. And it's somewhat prosperous. But it's always been like that. 20+ antebellum mansions were saved during the war. Other towns didn't have much left. So it's a very special place.
"Chez is a lovely old city with a lot of charm, some great antique stores (if they are open) and a few good places to eat. Best thing to do while there: Find a nice hotel room with a balcony and go to a liquor store. Eat a good meal then return to your room, sit on the balcony and get sh*tfaced until you can leave.
Well, due to the history, location on the river, the trace, and to new cotton processing technologies. Not due to slaves because there were slaves all over the south.

Is Natchez the only prosperous city in Mississippi? Perhaps Gulfport and Biloxi are also good.
